Thank you guys for posting this, I’ve been sitting on my MHI for a couple weeks. I saw on the forums someone else had posted they had issues upon install as well. I’ll definitely be sending this back and going another route. Keep up the good work guys and thanks again for all the awesome reviews on all the parts.
Hey man. Nice video. Please take the time to read.. So far I've driven 20,000 KM on the MHI TD03. I'm up North. I've had this MHI snail since July 2020 when it was brand new to the scene. First one failed when I was running 0w20 w/ just a downpipe and a reflash. To be fair I beat the crap out if it as soon as I got it installed, used the wrong oil, stock intercooler; turbo failed less than 24 hours and it was installed by an awful shop.. $$$ down the drain to re-install stock turbo. Lesson learned My TD03 was warrantied though. Had the replacement turbo sitting from August 2020 until January 2021 until I decided to have another go at it. Installed at a more reputable shop. Websites recommend 10w40 but this is what's throwing people off. Use 5W30. 5W30 works flawlessly on the L15B7. I've had no issues. Currently FBO (stock TIP) and It's seen laps at the track it. I broke in the turbo in the first 1,000 KM of turbo install. I'm 304WTQ @ 26 psi on 93 pump gas (via OBD II) on just the basemap. (I have a custom tune but haven't hit the dyno again since fbo)
5:39 MHI does not state that you need to use 10W40; they recommend it. I decided to run 5W30 with my MHI turbo upgrade. Also, you can remove the fuel injector fuse to prevent flooding; it is located near the ignition coil fuse. I installed my turbo a few days after this video and haven't had any issues. I have put down over 2K miles so far and am being tuned by DROB.
Amazing man... I appreciate you guys doing this for us.. means a lot. 💯 u guys always keep it 100% I know u guys will recover & I will also go with prl turbo from the looks of this
I’m hoping MHI reaches out to you guys and gives their feedback on this video. I’m very curious on why it failed 3x on you guys. The more information the better
Agreed. The first 2 had warranty reports that said the oil was overheated.... Not after idle and one dyno pull it wasn't. Truth be told, we don't buy from MHI directly. I asked our distributor for someone from MHI to reach out to us. Nobody ever did.
I installed mine a few days after this video was released. I decided to run 5W-30 Full Synthetic oil, and everything is going well so far. I have put down 2k miles already as I'm being e-tuned by DRob.
I was planning on buying a prl kit anyway. Very informative video. I really hope it helps the manufacturer figure out the issue. Keep the vids coming, I have more money to spend. The act clutch is going in this weekend!!
Thanks for the video. Bummer about y'all's luck with these. I've had my MHI TD03 for a year now. The only things I've noticed are that it accepts a ton of timing advance with the stock inlet and that boost tapers off after 5500 rpm
Crazy. My stock turbo, completely stock civic just died at 74,000KM. being replaced under warranty, so hopefully it doesn't happen again. If it does once my warranty is over I'll be going with an aftermarket company for sure for another turbo. Dealer said the failure was down to a spun bearing.
This was very disappointing to watch, as I was looking to find a tougher turbo that can withstand a harder beating than the OE turbo. Your first pull made EXACTLY the amount of horsepower and torque I want to make, and is very close to what the Phearable 1.5 tune (for OE turbo) makes. (I'm also running this tune right now.) It looks like I'm going for a 27-Won W1, then. This video was very informative. Thank you.
Bummer, but thanks for telling us the details of the story. This viewer appreciate the transparency. Did you try it without ethanol and just run 91 pump gas? I'm in California so I'm trying to keep my 10th gen Civic as CARB compliant as I can.
Awesome video thank you. What did you torque the oil feed line to? (Block side with the small 10mm bolt and the banjo bolt on the turbo). Any help would be much appreciated, just pulled the turbo because of a broken stud.
I run this turbo now on my car. Td03 works with intercooler + down-pipe kit from Wagner. Reset is stock. The runner got me 275hp and 387nm. I’ve decided to downgrade to 250hp and 345hm. I am running in Motul 0w30 as always. Works great for a daily driver. I am curious if anyone with this turbo had any reliability issues so far. I only have 700km on it and it’s only highway ride.
I've MENTIONED it MANY - MANY times regarding eng oil ! especially at warmer climates he did miss a part during lube process - CAPTS implemented an extra step to DOUBLE check ! heh . . . check your oil pump gears ;) peak boost 23 psi above 6000 ft elevation ? AGREE with them could be a bad batch & NOT pointing fingers at any parties. agree with him towards the end around 15.55
@@EdgeAutosport I thought for sure y’all had the hKs on there ...Did you end up taking it off then? I saw the install video for it. Kinda on the fence as well
Dude 15w30 or 40 is to thick!!! No Japanese car use that 15w30 is what Harley Davidson uses , if they want it thicker you should go with 5w30 or 5w40 ... you should try again with the right oil
Ha! That's what were planning on putting on. It's been sitting here the whole time. With all the videos we wanted to do, it had to wait. We didn't want to take that long to put it on but that's just how things unfolded for us. It's right around the corner though.
@@EdgeAutosport I’ve been learning some lessons first hand from my RV6 turbo. Like my fuel system can’t support boost above 25psi. It tries to feed the fuel but the cylinder pressure is too high it made my car shut down into limp mode throwing a code p0087. Keep an eye out for that.
Quick question for you guys, when the turbo fails do you have to replace anything other than the turbo? Is there any debris in the head or any other side effect that could occur as a result of the failure? I’m asking because the same exact thing happened to me last weekend and I’m concerned that there could be damage elsewhere in the intake or engine itself. Thanks!
It's definitely possible to have shrapnel enter the engine, depending on how the turbo fails... hence why some people elect to rebuild with a fresh shortblock if they've had a big explosive failure. It's all very case-by-case though, and depends how much you have to spend on the repair.
To thick of an oil, 27won is garbage had two of then and both blew at recommended psi level , 27won is pute chine shit, if you want to upgrade the turbo save your money and get the prl kit
I don't have any experience with 27Won and probably won't since we don't sell them. But Garrett has always been good to us. Can't wait to get that on the car.
I’m in the market for a new clutch for my 19 SI, I watched the video of the ACT 6 puck. I was curious what your thoughts are now after driving it for a few months. Did you change the CMC, if not have you had any lock out problems? Thanks in advance!
Honestly, we weren't going to keep that oil in the car. We almost had the attitude that the thicker oil recommendation wasn't a reasonable fix for what we had experienced. We knew the oil was never the problem with the first 2 blown turbos. So we just threw some really thick stuff in there in case the 3rd turbo blew to show that it had nothing to do with the oil. And sure enough....
27won turbo it is then. I appreciate the video and the honesty 👍👍

That 1 dislike is from MHI 👀🤭😂
That's wild because both of my Tuners told me to get the MHI stage 2 over any other drop in because of reliability
I’d rather have the tune rich than lean off the shelf. Good to see the tune was great other than the fuel adjustments

It had dang near 100% 91 pump gas in it (it was seeing about 18% ethanol). But that wouldn't have made a difference.
I hope it gets figured out, this is frustrating im sure. Upgrade from oem sounded like a good idea but...
Definitely frustrating. We didn't enjoy making this video, or attempting the 2 videos before it.

Thank you.
If you hold the throttle at wot while trying to start the car it disables the injectors, by the way
I appreciate it! I actually did do that but only on the second time I primed it so I think fuel came in on the first try.
Installed and no break in. Jumped on dyno and floored it. No wonder it failed LOL maybe do better job of break in
Hondata has a tune where you can swap the CRV/SI turbo into a sport hatch. I wonder how different that is than the MHI upgrade.
So I want to upgrade my turbo. Which one is the best for EDD? The power curve of the W1 looks good, but is that real?
Do you guys at Edge Autosports use a defouler for your catless downpipe or did you tune there ECU to not throw a code ?
