  • Patrick McKeown meets James Nestor, author of Breath The new science of a lost art
James Nestor is the author of a new book on breathing called:
Breath: The new science of a lost art : www.mrjamesnestor.com/breath
James Nestor is an author and journalist who has written for Outside Magazine, Men's Journal, The Atlantic, National Public Radio, The New York Times, Scientific American and more.
Nestor’s new book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, will be released through Riverhead/Penguin Random House on May 26, 2020. It explores how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly over the past several hundred thousand years and is now suffering from a laundry list of maladies - snoring, sleep apnea, asthma, autoimmune disease- because of it. Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of Sao Paulo. Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head.
Nestor has appeared on dozens of national radio and television shows ― including ABC’s Nightline, CBS Morning News, and dozens of NPR programs. More at mrjamesnestor.com.

It's a beautiful thing that Mr. Nestor and Mr. McKeown view each other not as rivals but as fellow messengers on the power of breathing. I found Mr. Nestor's work from his appearance on Joe Rogan, and I found Mr. McKeown's work indirectly from Breath. I highly recommend reading or listening to both books there is a little bit of overlap but they both have loads of good information in them.

Glad to hear this. It's so important for physicians to recognize breathing as (in Nestor's words) "the missing pillar of health." Yet you don't seem to hear many doctors talking about this. I heard no public messaging during the pandemic, for example, urging people to breath through their noses.

I am just an old lady that started just 2 years ago, after listening to Mr McKeown, to consciously breathing through my nose for sleeping. I had a scary experience in an airplane being forced to wear a mask and I was in a panic so I decided to learn to breath. Covid was everywhere and masks were necessary. Today, I tape my mouth every night, everyone laughs, and my apnea is gone, I dont snore and I sleep much more deeply. Just 2 years. I wish I had known in my previous 70 years. Thank you Mr Keown for showing me how to breathe and use my nose. BTW any time I talk about it no one says much, they hem and haw, and thats it. DONT PEOPLE CARE?????IT IS BASIC!!!!!

I’m in the anti-aging field. I only ascribe to all natural and healthy lifestyle and teach women and men how to stay Ageless as they celebrate each birthday. I was introduced to yoga over 20 years ago, I’ve been meditating daily for over 25 years. I was a pretty good breather with all the disciplines I was taught. I recently found and incorporated the Wim Hof technique into my my daily regiment and I can honestly say that nothing I have ever done has supported me the way the Wim Hof breathing has. I feel like I’ve created a whole new life style in one simple exercise. I can’t describe how wonderful I feel from 10-20 minutes of conscious breathing exercise a day. My meditation has reached new levels of awareness and the state of relaxation I experience all day long is so noticeable I can’t begin to describe it. And the biggest ah ha is my skin! This breath technique is causing my skin to glow, making me appear more youthful than my 66 years. Now everything Breath is on my radar. I’m starting to encourage my clients and students to explore a breath technique that suits them. I truly believe that proper breathing will keep us young and healthy. Here’s to our good health.

My wishes to the success of now offering a better approach to outdated ENT invasive surgery. The fact that those who are mouth breathers after having surgery by opening up adenoids and tonsils had 63% failure unless these kids are taught nose breathing shows it’s best as the front line of treatment to start with nose breathing training to get to the cause is a breakthrough in both of your work. I’m the author of a new book “Immune Rejuvenation” and these techniques are part now of the 5 steps to health and longevity because sleep is one of the 5 supported by healthy proper breathing! I have in my late 60’s continued as a strength endurance weight lifting athlete and in the last 20 years I was taught to use nose breathing which improved why performance beyond imagination enough to break two world records. Stough’s method of re-educating all the structures involved in optimal breathing is truly wonderful and very much alive! It has not been lost...thanks to Martin and DeHaas!! Last winter I was doing a dedicated practice of Wim Hof breathing and cold exposure. Fully committed. But I didn’t like the breathing. The results of the breathing were interesting. Was holding my breath for almost 4 minutes after the exhale. Could do about 35 pushups after the exhale without breathing. But I didn’t like the process of the doing the vigorous breathing. It was unpleasant and I couldn’t get used to it no matter how many weeks I practiced.
So I switched to using the techniques of The Oxygen Advantage. This approach came more naturally to me. It was scientifically explained. It made sense to me. So I wrote off the Wim Hof style of breathing, although I kept the cold exposure practice.
Now, after watching this, I’ll have to reevaluate. I like what James Nestor was saying about how the different means of breathing will yield different results and apply in different scenarios. It’s not all one method forever more. The stimulation of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems is important.
Will definitely be getting this new book. Great conversation. So interesting.

You should take the breathing part(Guided Wim Hof Method Breathing) as a refference/guideline
If you do less, or slower etc...ets fine, as long as you keep dong et indefinitely
      Still breath in via nose
exale nose(wim does through mouth, maybe exale is not as important but still i say nose)
Second part is the power of the brain , when exaling FEEL relaxation coming from your head to your soul/sol/soular plexus

Also, as J. Nestor says in this interview, it is better to get your breathing up above-average using the slow Oxygen Advantage techniques taking deeper slower diaphragmatic breathes, and then once your lung capacity and breathing have normalized at a higher capacity, then get into the Wim Hof. Wim's technique is great, but it is a shock to the system to breathe like that-which can be good, but not the best for everyone. If you were able to hold your breath for 4 minutes, then you should be able to go back to this, after your Oxygen Advantage training and be more relaxed and probably exceed that. Like Darko P say, it's about feeling the body and relaxing, and feeling that relaxation. Wim's technique, if you are not doing the mind-body connection, is not nearly as productive because you end up stimulating all of these chemicals in your body but not relaxing and releasing them properly. It is this controlled release that gives you the most positive gains in terms of the bigger work involving the sympathetic nervous system and immune system, from my understanding. I do both of these menthods. Wim Hof first thing in the morning, as a reset to get me on track, and Oxygen Advantage for regular day to day life. I've ordered Nestor's book into my public library through an inter-library loan. It should be here soon. Looking forward to it. Once I finish that I want to order in his book about Free Diving. I watched several interviews with him now as well as reading articles; one of my favorites was the youtube podcast of Joe Rogan. I use a youtube 11:01 minute wim hof breathing video, easy to search. I find that his instruction and the pace was pretty spot on for me to begin this. Good Luck.

I discovered mouth taping through James' book, and haven't had any nightmares since. Thanks guys, great podcast!

@@irishlad2326 When breathing through my mouth, my tongue and the roof of my mouth get very dry and sticky - and i start to snore. At some point my tongue just sticks to the roof of my mouth and i cannot breath anymore, and this comes terribles dreams to shock myself awake. Usually i'm sweating like a pig, from working so hard to get any air. With the tape trick, i no longer get a dry mouth and tongue, so that fixed my issue.

Starting with WIM HOF and now your techniques have helped me greatly. I have a heart arrhythmia - didn't think I could do anything about it and started breathing and after 4 months my heart rate is back to normal around 60 BPM, where with the heart arrhythmia prior to doing your techniques was 120-130 BPM resting - causing all sorts of issues (anxiety, high BP, physical injuries. etc.). I'm a former competitive runner and feel this technique back in the early 80s would have saved my running career and prevented the heart arrhythmia. Many thanks.

If it would not have been for James' book - I would not have finally realized how profoundly important nose breathing is.
Sure I have heard anecdotes that breathing was important - But never has it come across or explained in a way that without a doubt has driven home it is something I should look further into and begin practicing "right now". For the last month and a half, I have been ingesting as much information as possible and to date have seen benefits from it.
Looking back - I've wasted so many years with very low energy levels, trying countless things in an attempt to improve and enhance my athletic efforts. (doing physical stuff is goal one for me to enjoy a full life)

Thanks a lot Patrick for all your effort presenting the knowledge about breathing to the world. I had allergies for 20 years and had asthma for a couple of years and this for about 6 months per year. I tried sooo many different approachs and nothings worked. About 3 years ago I watched some of your videos and a couple of others about breathing and they inspired me to try it out. After one months of changing my breathing I lost my allergies completly, also the asthma. What followed was very weird, coz my family and friends saw the changes in me and I told them that breathing is the key, but nobody believed it. Everyone had other explainations, some who are doctors and literary nobody trusted in breathing, but I never stopped defending it and doing research on my own (reading more books :D). Now a week ago I read the book by James and found data about allergies and asthma etc. and it was such a relief to read a book like this by a science journalist. I m giving the book now to all people around me and it already has impact on them :) .. thanks a lot for your great work, to both of you!

These two were talking about “ is there too much money treating these cases” in not talking about breathing. I am a retired orthodontist and was well
aware we could improve breathing in patients, by expanding the width of the palate. But, truly, I never heard any discussion about breathing thru the
nose improving and effecting growth of the size of the nasal cavity, and giving more room for the teeth. I don’t think it was greed but rather ignorance
of the importance of correct breathing!

I have obstructive sleep apnea. I need to get a chin strap again. I have a full-face mask because I've had sinus trouble in the past. A few months before I started using a CPAP machine, I had a septoplasty that I chose to have done because my septum was 90% deviated. I was tired of sounding like I had a cold, even on the best day, when singing, let alone speaking.
Since using CPAP, I haven't had a serious chest infection. I generally breathe through my nose, something I truly wish I'd been able to do as a child with constant sinus trouble. It's so, so sad how much we don't pay attention to mouth-breathing, and how much it hurts us.
These two gentlemen are wonderful. I love hearing them share ideas back and forth. Thank you both so, so much!

Patrick and James, *thanks to both of you for the work you're doing here.* I've had "Breath" on preorder for months, psyched that it's arriving today.
The "why" regarding many of us mouth breath has many contributing factors. Buteko was instrumental in getting me to understand better breathing, but it was equally important that I avoid dairy to maintain it.
Ultimately my real problem was a tongue tie contributed to an underdeveloped jaw, cramped teeth, braces which made everything worse; all resulting in severe sleep apnea which is helped somewhat by a CPAP, but that creates its own problems and I still don't sleep well. I have an airway which has a sever constriction in the upper throat, it's 15-20% of what it should be, and my only real resolution is surgical. I'm planning to have an MMA surgery later this year to address this; if I could do it today I would, but it requires 6 months of orthodontics to prepare for the surgical procedure.

When a mother is able to naturally and fully breasfeed their babies , the baby LEARNS to nose breathe - naturally . My friends baby was on a respirator in the start , came out of that with what I saw with athsma in my child -- I got her latched on to her mom's boob , and said wait a bit , she will re balance . It worked . All the athsma symptoms stopped - Supposedly asthma is over breathing - the lungs are trying to close down the intake by puffing up the ventricles , or whatever I am NOT a doctor or even a breastfeeding advisor . I just did it and had a lot of experience . Anyway , the best thing you can give your child for life, is a breastfed infancy , toddlerhood and sometimes ... through early childhood . My last baby , who is a 6 '3 woman now , so she was a tall long baby , she fed on the breast until late 4 years old , when I would wean , she would get exzema . In anycase , dads that means supporting your woman , emotionally and physically , during the time that they are suppporting your baby with her body . In my opinion , better than college education , is breastfeeding your baby . PS , it also keeps mom calm and happy and relaxed , if mom is loved and safe during that time .
