I beam joists on top seem like a better idea if you're looking for storage in the rafters

Or the very least, use the correct sized lumber and if you don't know what that is, then check out some of the floor joist span lumber charts that are usually available on the Internet. I'm not suggesting these charts will always work for you, but they might get you going in a better direction.

I see one big problem, won't the rafter ties be in the way?

If they are then they will have to be removed, just don't remove all of them until you have some joist installed to prevent the walls from spreading. The rafter ties are holding the building together.

@@gregvancom but a joist installed in between the walls can’t hold both tails of the rafter from spreading. I like the idea, it just seams like the spread load could be compromised.

Hi, Great Video here. I have a 20x20 garage with 2x4 rafters every 24" on center.
My question to this video is "Would I be able to build a floor like that with a 20ft span using 2x8s without having to touch the existing trusses. We want to be able to put some storage above with 1/2in floor boards and 1/2" drywall on the ceiling.
    Thanks in advance

I can't provide engineering advice, but for storage larger joist might be required like 2x12.

Love your videos, it's not my industry (though someone close to me does) but you always answer questions I find myself asking.

I have an old 2 car garage with a pyramid roof. The roof has very little structural support - one 2x4 mid span running front to back and 2 2x4s on their sides running side to side. There is also a 2x6 running vertically in the center of the garage attached to some 2x4s that run to support a post in the center of the pyramid. This is clearly not sufficient as the garage is listing. My thought is to straighten the garage and then add new rafter ties from side to side and remove the center post. What's your thought on lumber size if this is a good way to go -- thanks and love your videos!

Usually the vertical lumber is used to hold up the rafter ties and don't provide any structural support above them. However, I cannot provide you with engineering information, but would suggest going to the website and watching a few more videos. If for whatever reason you can't find what you're looking for, email me some pictures of your project along with a description of what you're trying to do and I'll be glad to take a look at them.

What about adding a studio over a garage, can you do a video about that?

    • @gregvancom

I just put it on my list of videos to be made in the future. Keep in mind that this project might not happen for quite some time.

Another great video Greg. What if you have existing ceiling joints which are underspec. Say something like 2x6 across a 20' span. They existing joists would make it impossible to nail a new ledger board and joists hangers up. Any suggestions in that case?

This is a great video, but most garage roofs have existing horizontal ceiling joist going across the span between the sill plates. Building a support structure below that with joist hangers is great, but now when you get up in the attic, you're sheathing isn't going to sit flat on that deck. You're going to be sheathing ON TOP of those existing ceiling joists, thereby losing 12" or more of height in that attic. Certainly something to consider before taking on this project.
