- Alex is a different kind of grappler. With specials focused around mobility and a good dash, he's very nimble, whilst he's also great at racking up stun. A very momentum based character, there's a reason Alex mains in SFV are known for their obnoxious Twitter clips, and it's no different here.

Alex is probably one of my favorite fighting game characters ever and he was my first fighting game main in 3rd strike along with Yang and Dudley. Even though alex isn't really that strong in the grand scheme of the games meta, he's still won plenty of tournaments. Even winning Co-op cup back in 2017! Hes a good example of what happens if you put the work in and practice. You can win with almost anybody!
That's only because of the games mechanics. Akex is still trash.

@Wellepay I thought my comment spoke for itself. Alex is bad, but thanks to system mechanics, he can still hold his own. It's not that difficult to understand.

Another note worth mentioning: Alex has really good air normals. At lower levels this typically really helps his approach game, and it's not uncommon to see someone lose the round because j.HP beat whatever AA was coming out and then Alex stuns them in three hits.
The character is kind of a scrub-killer, for better or worse. Easy to pick up and beat bad players with, but once people get better he falls off hard.

@@carlbloke8797 straight up low tier actually. But as said earlier, he does well against lower level players. His gameplan is straightforward and he does a lot of damage and stun, so he can snowball rounds if the opponent makes a mistake in neutral.
I love how you started with the remix and then went to the normal ost since you talked about alex's strengths first and then elaborated on his weaknesses

Lol. At least they preserved his image. Unlike Necalli who was hyped up as the next biggest monster since Akuma, and despite being playable, doesn't accomplish anything in the story except get his ass kicked.
I was wating so long for this video. Alex has a special place in my heart, he is my prime example of "character over tier". I always pick my mains based on character design, and if they are low tier, then bring it. Im gonna make it work no mather what, and Alex is one of those chars that once you get the hand of it, its pretty sick. As you mentioned, a very momentum based character that can be brutal once his game is on. Since day 1 of playing 3rd strike i play alex, and never, ever, looked back.
I really liked how you talked about all of his pros and all of his cons for real and not try to hidden it. I love Alex and I hope He gets in street fighter 6 and gets what he needs for all of us.
Alex got a really good reception in 5 and he's a big rep for 3s, so I feel like his chances of getting in 6 are pretty good
As an Alex main, they got most of the points down on this one. Good video. Alex is definitely a momentum-based character that relies a lot on knowledge checks for your opponent.
Why I devoted over 18 years of my life playing this character, I'll never know why, but I'll gladly keep posting up those ridiculous Alex highlights when I can.
And Alex has the most badass vocalizations in my opinion!

Funny how both characters that I'm interested in are so close.
I just love the idea of a more mobile grappler. But yeah, he seems a bit undercooked. Funny how he's not very good in SFV either, but at least has his nuke comeback potential turned up a lot.
I believe the philosophy behind Alex was that since he's a "hybrid" grappler, his grabs are just kind of 'okay' on their own but are meant to work in TANDEM with the Flash Chop/back-turned state to really bring out the full potential. The problem is that they didn't give Alex any finesse to actually hit an opponent with a Flash Chop when it counts. He desperately needs something like Sean Tackle (which he can stop early) or a Flash Chop feint (like what the Twins or even Makoto has).

If had to have somebody else be the "face" of Street Fighter, I still would've preferred Alex over permanent Popeye arms Luke.

Alex is honestly on the knifes edge of being a really good character.
A few key options selects, a badly coded super not grabbing, and a few strange frame data choices, are all that makes him a scrub killer instead of the high tier powerhouse he would be if his tools legitimately worked. Sad.
Exactly; unlike necro and Elena where they’re just pretty mediocre and have no major problems they just don’t have major strengths for the most part, Alex is a fantastic character with atrocious downsides that level him out to be just an ok character.
Alex just needs 3 changes to be comparable to Oro at least:
Target combo is consistent
cMK special cancels
Light chop super cancels.
This makes his overheads way more threatening to go for, let’s hyper bomb be a fantastic super because light chop back turns instead of being a bottom 5 super, and overall helps his stagger and confirm game enough where his weaknesses are fair instead of being clear signs they didn’t finish him.

Hello again. Yeah we talked about what we each think Alex could benefit from being buffed in our previous discussion, a bit on the Alex video and mostly on the Twelve video, by Big Yellow 8 months ago.
(I found the comment on the Alex video when I recognized you but I can't find the conversation on the Twelve video)
Our difference in balance ideas comes down to the fact that I want him to be Ken-Makoto tier in strength, but you seem to want him lower at Oro level.
I'm still of the opinion that fixing several of his gimmicks to actually be legit would be one of the best ways to buff him. However I also agree that your changes would definitely help as well, the crMK being a very important one. Making his low threatening enough to enforce the grab mixup is key for him.
For example IMO rather than making hyper bomb work because of a specific link that forces it to work, I think it should just grab before the freeze frames like other functional grab supers like Hugo's, so it works all the time and can be used for tic setups and such.
I think it would also be amazing for him if EX slash wasn't a 2 hit, but instead a 1 hit and make it -2 like light slash. If the pushback wad lessened as well that all of a sudden makes it a great burst pressure tool to close the space and push the opponent into the corner where he wants them.
Some quality of life stuff like power bomb doing more damage and having better oki especially for the lighter versions would also be great for him as again his reward really needs to be there to be good.
Other QOL like fixing some whack hitboxes or frame data on certain moves that don't match very well, or are absurdly - for their reward like headbutt, standing HK, etc.
I could see decreasing the charge on his charge Specials as well, or maybe even removing the charge if he was still weak with everything else buffed. Removing charge would be a last resort if after everything else both of us have listed he still was only mid tier. I wouldn't want to remove the charge moves as I think it is part of his identity to an extent.

I'm more on the side of if something going to be fixed it might as well be fixed properly rather than bare minimum.
To me his kit is cool enough I wouldn't want to screw with it too much like making it into SFV version or something.
However I think more minimalistic changes like your ideas, or even an extended version of that like 4rd strike, still leaves him with several useless/broken moves that could be really cool/strong if they worked at high level.
Couple of fun things I've learned about Alex
His kara throw is among the furthest reaching in the game.
His headbutt, powerbomb, and hyper bomb can go through fireballs on hit.
His standing HK and Flash Elbows have great corner carry on hit.
He kindof reminds me of Clark(KOF) in that his walk speed is slow, but he makes up by having a quick dash.
While playing as him has led to a broken controller or two...Alex is my boy in 3S. Playing 3S on Switch is changing my life.
His throw is also probably the second best one in the game overall behind Urien’s. Second highest range and damage with the same amount of recovery as his mp and it leaves them close.
Alex is like a nerfed version of Gill, they just forgot to nerf his high stun.
I like how he says "Weak" at the end and then almost immediately he's rated as "overall: kinda bad" lmao

YIKES! Never knew Alex's supers were so easy to stop and he has inconsistent combos
He just doesn’t get a kit that supplements them. Oro has 2 top 10 supers but would anyone say they’re good if he couldn’t use close mp to get unblockables and juggles? Probably not. But Alex is actually living that hypothetical so his supers become worse just do to that.
And the fact that it's really easy to fix, maybe something like Critical Combo Attack as a new SA, or simply adding vacuum effect on Boomerang Raid alone easily makes it top tier. But no, they didn't bother to fix him for 3 games straight xD

Grapplers are like kamikaze fighters. He is one of my very few favorite grapplers in fighting realms ( including SF4 Abel, Tekken King & Armor King, DOA Ryu, VF Goh and BR Stun ).
That 's nolstagic jazzy ost is powerfully unforgettable. Yeah, he is maybe a flawed character compared to others but a sentimentally hardened favor for him accompanied with player's skills and game sense will be a perfect gear to compensate for him !!!
I like super art III ALTHOUGH 2 is the best well rounded one .. the trick is to get them blocking esp in the corner med knee into dtd is good too

Hi, can you explain something about the Air Stampede, Alex's foot crush? At 0:43
I get into fights against opponents who, most of the time, spam this attack because, for some reason that I don't know, it goes through, as if the hit box was cracked, which means that I take the Air Stampede 8 to 10 times in a row without being able to avoid it or protect myself from it. No matter how many times I do a low back guard or standing back guard, I get caught by this attack. If I manage to get out of it, it's by jumping and attacking constantly. You have to try and shift at the last moment to avoid the attack, and sometimes I manage to do that, but it's still hard work. What annoys me is not losing, but losing to spammers who abuse this damn technique because they exploit a flaw in the game.
So, if you have an answer, it will help me a lot. Thanks in advance.
Firstly don't low block it because its an overhead. You're probably just getting crossed up by it. If you parry with proper timing, you will either parry or block, depending on what side he's on, so learning to do that consistently will protect you from ambiguous crossups. The move is -3 on block and on parry you get whatever punish you've got. It's the kind of move that blows up people who don't know how to deal with it but becomes significantly less useful against more well prepared players.

I will say as a huge Alex player his biggest issue is a lack of lows and confirms into super. He’s got such great raw stats. He’s got good speed, the third highest hp, the highest stun bar, the second farthest throw with second highest damage with the shortest whiff recovery, great stun output for nothing, a cMP that’s 0 on block, a mk that can beat Chun li cMK, a 3 frame mp that practically does everything but zone and has very few punishable on block moves. Even ryu has punishable on *HIT* moves.
But without those 2 things he’s like Oro if he lacked close mp. Would you say his supers were good and could delete you if he couldn’t use the only normal that sets them up? How good would his damage be?
Alex really is screwed by not having light chop super cancel or having a low he can combo off of and giving him those 2 things would straight up boost him to at least Oro’s position. Like if he could combo light chop to hyper bomb that super would be fantastic. It literally would do Ibuki’s full hp bar off a jump in and give him the corner even if he has you in the opposite corner. But like oro hypothetically without a cMP Alex can’t super cancel light chop. So he just has a grab you can jump out of on reaction.

Why is hyper bomb a bad super?
It’s a 2 frame grab with one bar. He has good ex’s so that’s last ones obvious why it sucks but it goes from ok to atrocious with the first part because that means you can jump out of it on reaction. Once you know that it should never land.
I didn’t like him in SF III because his normals and Supers just eh. But he’s pretty fun to play in SF V.

I've been an Alex main for years and the sentiment of SAII being the only viable super just doesn't feel right. Alex gets into a situation where if he fishes for his very few SAII comfirms, he easily gets read and killed. The threat of SAI coming out to punish people for pressing buttons or SAIII just having weird properties makes me think SAII is the worst out of his kit. SAII is just boring and a worse version of supers that everyone knows how to play around.
I like to keep SAIII on, even against skiled players. The robbery potential is too great.

Actually i was pleasantly surprised in the beginning of the series with how many characters were labeled as strong.
But the truth remains that this game isn't exactly known for well balanced character strength

“Strong throw game” is super cap lmao, his command grabs are slow, have very little range outside of the LP version, and deal low damage overall
I am glad his incompleteness is touched upon because that’s definitely the case, on top of the weaknesses mentioned he’s extremely susceptible to parries, with his main poke in cr.MP being both high and low parryable, Stomp being very easily parried on reaction, and Air Knee Smash being parryable for some reason
Imo he’s incredibly gimmicky and his saving grace lies in his (EX) Slash Elbow (though Chariot Tackle and Q’s dash punch are better) and his okay mobility and neutral pokes (which there are DEFINITELY better characters for), making this sadly quite interesting character in concept pretty mediocre and redundant when measured up against the rest of the cast.
The mp thing is pretty irrelevant. You don’t low parry Alex he has no lows. In actual practice you’d always try to mid parry him at that range for mk.
Also he does have a strong throw game. His generic throw is a top 3 throw. It outranges some Kara throws without a Kara and barely even looks like a throw whiffing while hitting second hardest in the game and leaving them close.
