I totally agree. I find myself throwing on his channel to listen while I get other stuff done. Soak in the magic so to speak. Then later I’ll tune back in when I’m in front of my gear.
Cannot stop being amazed with your intro pieces. Just, wow. Please, keep doing what you do. Also, I really appreciate your honest takes on all the pieces of gear you review, as well as the fact that you actually for the most part bring those pieces out on gigs and try to get an idea how it is to actually gig them. Kudos for that.
This update actually makes the Helix wayyy better! Was about to sell mine and buy an fm3 but now wondering if I need to anymore the new amps sound great and cover a wide range of styles and sounds.
this is imo where helix line 6 is so good. Im older so in my past I didnt have a ton of amps I had one a fender twin with boss effects,od chorus delay added eq down the road.I got my clean and crunch sounds i wanted.I was done these days everyone is so freaking obbesed with all the availible amps and is missing the point of getting a good sound and be done. Now if you are happy with the catalyst you can now take that and your helix stomp to a gig and use either one as a amp or backup amp.I went on a gig a prayed that my stuff would blow up now i can take an amp and a backup amp in a backpack and imset.Line 6 really made gigging imo easy and no freaking out.thanks line 6
As soon as I opened up the 2203 at default settings I was very impressed. Thanks for going thru the line 6 options in depth, I may have glanced at them but not done the deep dive.
Don't miss that with the Bassman amp. you also have gotten the Bassman Cabinet, it says that it is loaded with 2 15 inch D130 JBL speakers, those Most likely are the type used by SRV, which those fans will want to check out. The JBL's were the upgrade in Fender Amps. I never owned one with them, but knew a couple people who did, but the 70's was along time ago, so not much sound memory for them. But would surely be Worth checking out to use with any Amp. combination for sure.
as usual John ..every time there's a Helix update I come to listen to how you make sounding great every new component... and thanks for those enjoyable moment..you're such a fine player. ..and I know all the most great players of the last 50 years in every genre..and you're on my top list of my favorite ones..
Really liking the Voltage so far, does that Plexi thing with less knobs, tighter lows, and more sustain. Great amps all around was having a lot of fun with the 2203 and the new drive as well!
Wow another big update, sounds amazing! Going on 8 years with my Helix - and this after years of earlier Line6, Boss, Tech21 and Digitech multiFX and modelers. Totally amazing how well Line 6 has supported and developed this unit. Tit for tat on which modeler one might prefer tone-wise but no doubt about it, the Helix is the most user friendly and continuously improved product I’ve found.
Fantastic intro, and I definitely recognized the "Lonely in the night" influence. Re: TrueFire, they have frequent sales, but right now they have a pre-black-friday sale with pretty steep discounts, including on Eric Johnson's course. Some of the current discounts are steeper than the JNC40 discount. I'm definitely a fan of TF courses. -Tom
I was mostly interested in the Aristocrat. On a brief testing, I find it similar, albeit darker, to the Litigator, which is my current favorite all around for leads.
When you dial in a tone, using your ears and sensibilities, you generally get something very, very similar, regardless of what amp model, type, or even platform you're using. Is that evidence that a lot of this is overblown? I ask this as a 3X HX Stomp, F9, and 2X Tonex owner.
after your initial go through of the settings yesterday showed the 2203 sounded great out of the box I had a quick go during my lunchbreak today. its fantastic.. can't wait for a more indepth video on it 6:53 🙂 (and to snag any presets using it from gumroad.. I notice one there already!)
No need to apologize about the playing. I especially like your rhythm playing and slower leads. I'm more of a punk rock shoe gaze type of person, but you've definitely given me more of an appreciation for this style of playing.
Could you do a play through for EVERY amp model in the Helix?🙌🙌 Asking for a friend 😉😉 I've watched the opening a few times now, I can't seem to get enough of those runs, melodies and phrasing. I keep practicing to one day be able to achieve the flow of ideas/technique you possess. You need to compile a video of just these openers, they are all so so good. Thanks again John.
He has in at least the last 2 years covered every one of them at one point or another, whatever amp. name, just do a search on his video page, put the amp. name in and a video most likely will come up. Especially the litigator, the grammatico, he did 3 presets for Helix for the grammatico on it's release, you get those with a Helix purchase. The same goes for his work with G66 and the Fractal units. If John does not have it covered, Leon Todd would.
If Fender has done nothing else, they have slapped the competition into upgrade mode. And that's good for everyone no matter what you're using. I hope Fender (and the others) stay aggressive. They all have a ways to go to match up true tube gain from a quality tube amp.
The simple fact that Fender is introducing a competitive product will raise all their competitor's game. If you don't believe that, then you don't understand or haven't been in the game. When a company the size of Fender enters your game, you will pay attention, you will jack up your R & D, you will be more attentive to your customer base. Don't get me wrong, it's a good thing and makes for better products for us all. There is no "better or worse", especially in an artistic field IMO. There's only better or worse FOR YOU. When companies (big, medium and small) compete for your attention, everyone (including the companies) benefits. @@Newnodrogbob
Great playing for sure. I like your new camera angles so we can see some of the guitar faces - cool. The amp models are superior. I'm stoked about updating my Helix. Thanks brother!
The new Amps all sound good to me. I think the Kinetic deserves a closer look. I hope you make a video highlighting the new Cabs, and how different ones sound with the new Amps. Thanks
Hey John, one of the best intros ever. Quick question: what color is the pick guard and pickups. I've got a blond Strat, and I can't tell the difference online between aged white, parchment, etc. Thought you might know what was on this guitar. Looks great.
I have been liking theh Boutique in my Cat60, so no surprise that the Aristocrat would be very good sounding. Is the Kinetic the equivalent of the Dynamic in the Cats?
Very tasteful playing (as always), John. The new amps have inspired me to dig in and spend some time with them. Is there any chance that you would share these presets on Line6 CustomTone?
For recording quality is it generally better to go from Stomp into your audio interface as a line level signal or to connect Stomp to computer with USB and use the Stomp as the audio interface? Appreciate any tips. Im currently setting the Stomps output to line level and going into the interface. If USB Is better then I’ll have to figure that out.
@@davethielet5158thanks! When connecting via USB do you set the Stomp output to line level? I’ll definitely give that a try. Honestly was just hesitant to deal with install and risking messing up drivers etc
@@VintageRadius When recording direct from USB, the output level isn't used. The digital stream is sent from the Stomp right into your DAW. It's really not much different than the audio interface you're already using, except that you're getting rid of the extra, unnecessary round of A/D conversion.
So they can have people complaining about them liking the old versions better? This is the better option. If you don't like the old ones there are new options for you to try. I don't see what's the downside. If you don't 'need' them then dont even bother updating maybe?
Yeah the two people above me hit the nail on the head. Those reasons above are why they shy away from that. People have spent forever tweaking sounds until they are content and then L6 says “Na f that you guys need to start over now.” 🤣 anyway I guess you can’t make everyone happy even when they are given free updates adding new stuff years later…
Dumb question. Why do they make so many dumble models? Not complaining I just didn’t realize there were that many flavors. Also when it comes to Line 6 amps i dont fully understand why they make Line 6 models instead of their respective counterparts. Is it to allow them more freedom and creativity in designing the controls and response of the amps?
This may not be the case for every Line 6 amp, but iirc, sometimes they are taking creative liberties that are really only feasible in a digital setting and not possible on a wired amp. So they end up calling it their own thing because it may have been “inspired by” but not “modeled after” an amp.
After spending a couple of hours messing around with the Clarity amp, I feel like I get out of it what I get out of Cory Wong's neural archetype. It's almost unnaturally clean... Like it transients compress like the amp is breaking up, but without any of the breakup. Honestly, it is a sound that I've been literally chasing my whole guitar playing life, before Cory Wong's Archetype! Being able to have that same thing in the Helix ecosystem of effects and cabs is godly!
If you ever want to just involuntarily laugh out loud play the new marshall on the default settings and then switch to the old one on the default settings.
Line 6 and perhaps fractal were the first into this stuff so why bother with the other stuff because you know both of these companies will just keep upping the game with pretty superb offerings. Kemper is also great just for the amp stuff but for every thing else line 6 and fractal. Just my humble opinion ?
Your legato runs are insane man. The tone and context compliments each other so well. Truly one of my favorite players.
I SECOND this statement. Im soooo glad that I stumbled across this channel years ago. Johns playing style is above and beyond 🤘
I totally agree. I find myself throwing on his channel to listen while I get other stuff done. Soak in the magic so to speak. Then later I’ll tune back in when I’m in front of my gear.
JC used to do Livestream legato lunches. Those were amazing.
I was just thinking the same thing. This guy has mastered legato to a level I’ve never seen. Very well done.
John, don’t apologize for lots of playing! Always awesome!👏👏 🎸

That opening song was worth the price of admission by itself!!! You need to put out CDs with all the great tracks you made into real full songs.
Unbelievable how good the new amps sound
Im not the only one that can’t await an album from you , can’t get enough of your amazing intros!

IMO yes, amp models are overblown. The tone comes from the cab and mic combo. The breakup characteristics come from the amp.
