So the thing that makes me upset about this is that although she actually took full responsibility of her actions by recalling and gave refunds, this is probably the end of the sales of her product while the Pink Sauce lady, while being a terrible person and not taking responsibility WHATSOEVER gets to see her product in DAMN WALMART because a big sauce company helped her out. I believe in second chances but not when the person getting it is a terrible person who took ZERO responsibilities for her actions and only blamed valid criticism for her issues

You can tell when people have never worked in food service in their life. Constantly warned about packaging and reheating methods teaches you all about this stuff. Had a mamager that wanted me to heat up nacho cheese wrong and the risk could have been botch. He was like "well Ive never had issues with it" and I went "well Im not a gambling kinda girl." And handed him the bag of cheese and walked away. Basically saying he could gamble with lives if he was so inclined to do so but I would take no part.
Another reason I feel kitchen/food or FACS classes should be mandatory in High school as well. People actually knowing about food safety literally saves lives.

At the least I'm glad she eventually took the criticism and upgraded her stuff to actual standards. That's not something Pink Sauce lady did, she just blamed her customers, got on a show to promote her only then got signed by a company to fix her shit for her. 0 accountability from her, glad a company fixed it, but she didn't learn any real lesson or humility in her situation. I don't even know if she gave refunds back. At least Pickle lady gave refunds, I remember Pink Sauce refusing refunds at one point.
I hope Pickle lady keeps improving herself and not be a repeat of Pink Sauce lady. But she has a way to go to get people to trust her again. I hope she learns how to properly sterilize and seal the jars and she better show it on camera. Botulism is a typical issue with these kinds of products which is why it's highly important when you can/seal you must be sterile in the process. Even doing it at home for yourself. As long as you sterilize your jars and then seal them properly as well as minimal contact with the foods put in it then pickled products can last a very very very very long time safely. I watch channels with years old brines they pickle foods in, they use clean utensils to put foods in or take foods out in order to keep them sterile.

As someone who has worked in food I find all this hilarious 😂 seriously like the internet has been learning so much about food processing and the legalities involved 😂😂 alot of this is really easily avoided too, like hello you have Google 😆 🤦🏼‍♀️ but then maybe she sort of already knew. Like I kept chickens for awhile and you can't just sell eggs. People do until they get a ticket or fine or something. I never sold eggs but I gifted some to my family members. I didn't have a bunch of chickens so selling them was never a motivation for me but my point is I knew that because I read about it in fb groups as it was a common topic.

It looks to me like she's trying to become legit. I'm kind of happy that the state of CA didn't fine her or anything, and used it as an opportunity to educate the public. Hopefully her experience will help others who might be wanting to do something like this as a small business. There's a lot of stuff you actually have to do, so research is extremely important for any new business.

If you put it in a jar, it must be sealed correctly. You NEVER sell ANY food in a plastic bag unless it's vacuum sealed, or if is wrapped individually, such as candies. Also, anything that has to do directly in the fridge has to be packed in a container - such as styrofoam - that will hold the cold of ice packs and/or dry ice inside to prevent spoilage.

As someone in the Food Science field C. Botulinum is taken the most seriously in food safety and is considered "zero-tolerance" since it can cause death from paralysis, and because the botulinum toxin produced is arguably the most toxic substance on earth with the smallest amount being lethal to anyone. And boiling temperatures of 100 C/212 F are not hot enough to kill botulinum spores, so most canned foods need to be done under pressure to reach temperatures of 121 C/250 F which isn't possible if you make home canned foods in normal boiling water. This is why food safety is extremely strict on canned foods and why what she did warranted such cause for concern

Learned about botulism in HACCP training. It’s not something to mess with.
We were told of a person who cooked green beans for her family. She tasted a green bean to see if it was okay and then cooked them and served them to the her family. She passed away and her family got really sick.
Impossible to tell if it’s botulism by sight, smell or taste.

I watched Ann Reardon's reaction to Pink Sauce and she explained that botulism bacteria can't grow in environment that is more acidic than 4.6 PH. So I would say confidently that you'll never get any botulism from any homemade pickles, because they are loaded with vinegar. So yeah, saying that anything improperly sealed will give you botulism is poorly researched statement, because that is not causally linked at all.

This isn't pickle girl being penalized. There's a recall notice because she actually followed through with getting a proper food license. A part of that is reporting voluntary recalls, which she'd already done by offering refunds. It didn't happen with the pink sauce because she never got licenced.

Even when my mom pickles her own veggies she uses some kind of tool to seal it. Never her hands, it wont last long and can mess up the process and contaminate it. I learned this as a kid, and I'm going to teach it to mine one day. Dont leave chinese food or milk out for more than 2 hours ever, and dont eat food left out especially overnight or pickled improperly

Well, in India, the sell of home-made jarred food is very common and botulism is really uncommon. It is so uncommon that each instance makes it to a publication and the last publication was ten years ago. I would suspect it is really rare. Although, Indian jarred food is heavily processed, which probably kills a lot of bacteria.

My first thought after reading was “ I bet she didn’t boil the jars” just over two minutes in and yep. Anyone who likes pickles knows that if you do not boil the jars then they must remain refrigerated. Seriously how could someone be so short sighted and dimwitted to sell a canned product and not even watch a single TH-cam video on the topic. She says she “hand seals” the jars… so she’s just closing the jar not “sealing” it. I thought it was common sense that you need to boil cans to not only seal them but pasteurize them to be shelf stable
