    I didn’t read all the comments, so I don’t know if this was said already, but if you want the best audio for digital music rather than your own music or voice you want to use “Share Computer Audio”. If you are doing something like a fitness class this is the way to go. You do this after your zoom meeting has started by going to the Share menu, selecting advanced at the top, then select share computer audio and press the share button in the corner. A banner will show up on your and the other meeting members screen saying that audio is being shared. Anything you now play from Spotify or TH-cam or iTunes on your computer will be shared without any loss to everyone else’s computer. No loss from the mic or the internet. Even when you use “Original Audio” it is still being sent over the internet phone protocol, which can (and does) drop packets. Hope that helps.

      Yes, I've heard this. It doesn't with that well for music lessons or fitness classes where the instructor needs to give verbal cues. The class can't hear them. They could buy gear, but my purpose for this video was to show a way to do that's inexpensive and possible for anyone. 😊

    • @toadlguy
      @toadlguy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zen Fitness Try the instructions I said above and yes you would play from your computer (although you can use a separate Bluetooth speaker). Health Sounds Music is correct, however, in that your spoken cueing can be difficult to hear unless you use a separate mic. Bluetooth connected headphone/mic like you use on your phone should work fine. You will then need to set your input (mic) and output (speaker) in the Audio settings. A little testing with volume levels will help.

    • @PatchBenni
      @PatchBenni 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shnzoned the computer doesn’t add sound. Do you mean the sound of the space you are in? That would be your acoustics in the space and the ambient sound of your space. You have preferences in whatever software you are using and you can adjust the sound in the sound or audio preferences.

    Laurie, this has been the most informative posting that I've seen on Zoom, and your presentation is totally charming. You must be a good music teacher. Thanks for that. Having said that, I just have one problem and that is how to connect an external mic, which nobody seems to have addressed. I have a Zoom R16 8 channel mixer (coincidentally the same name), into which I've plugged my mic, but I don't know how to set the Zoom settings so that it will mute the built-in mic computer but still sense the R16 output, which should be playing the mic audio applied to the R16. I should mention that my external mic input is for a headset so I cannot plug my mic directly into it.

    • @brendakerrytaggart

      Go to audio property settings, right click volume bottom right of laptop screen.select record ,you will see internal mic and below that line input if you have your external line plunged into your laptop, click on internal mic and disable it, then it will default to line input. Hope this helps. BE SAFE EVERYONE.

  • @PaulRedfern
    @PaulRedfern 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Doesn't hurt of course to disable them, but you don't actually need to disable 'Suppress Background Noise' options if you've chosen the "Enable Original Sound" option in your meeting. Enabling Original Sound automatically disables all of Zoom's audio processing, including the Suppress Background Noise options (if you right-click/ctrl-click on the dialog "Show in-meeting..." to bring up the contextual menu, it will confirm this).
    Oh BTW, I have a Mac. In the app, the path to these options is Zoom.us/Preferences/Audio/Advanced. HTH

    • @HealthSoundsMusic
      @HealthSoundsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the shortcut options! It's good to know where everything is too. I have my students who can disable the background noise, but they can't also have their Original Sound on, otherwise it causes clipping.

    • @PaulRedfern
      @PaulRedfern 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HealthSoundsMusic pleased to hear my comment was useful. As to clipping when your students turn on Original Sound, isn't that just a matter of them reducing the input levels on their microphones? Again something easily managed via the Zoom app's Audio Preferences (the 'test mic' option)? You don't even have to go into Advanced for that :)

    • @HealthSoundsMusic
      @HealthSoundsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've been a piano teacher for twenty-six years and not had to use any video conference app until now so I'm trying to catch on as best I can.
    My pupils are all on hold while I get to grips with Zoom. Unfortunately I don't have a laptop or computer, just an iPad....so I can only access the mobile version of Zoom. This means that frustratingly I can't get into the settings that are on the desktop version. Having had hilarious, chaotic 'meetings' with friends as a practice I witnessed the ridiculous sound and I said 'sounds to me like they've got some sort of random compression thing going on'. So this afternoon, watching your clip, I've learned that's exactly what it is (CRAZY....as you say, it's designed for soeech, but big deal if you hear background noise, who wants to 'not hear' all the audio detail of real life??' Especially when music is likely to be involved!!).
    It seems to me that all I can do personally in my Zoom version for iPad is go into Settings

    Laurie, thank you so much for putting this together. I had figured out alot of this myself because I speak to a friend in Brazil often; but the advanced setting informastions has REALLY helped me a better, more pleasant voice teacher. I have been making a lot of my own mp3s in the past 4 years because the students do not play piano so I was a little ahead with this aspect before this all started. It does take a lot of extra work for the teacher yet my students are doing so much better because they are learning to listen and use solfeggio knowledge to sing the correct intervals. We are really able to get to the nitty gritty of pitch and intonation with these settings. Yay!!

    This is helpful though, as you point out, it requires lots of computer and internet resources. I’ve been doing the backend for Zoom church services, and learned early on that music and vocals can’t come from different locations, as you also point out. I started merging video tracks of vocals and accompaniment into a single video and sharing that via Zoom. There’s a setting in the screen share , which I think does what you’re describing but just for the screen share. While sharing your screen or window, you can click the three dots on the black bar at the top of your screen and select “optimize video for share.” This makes the sound that broadcasts from the video much better for participants.

    Thanks for this video! What do to recommend for a choir trying to rehearse over Zoom? When we first tried it out, everyone reported: 1) some voices would be heard lagging and others would be in time
    2) not every voice could be heard at once
    3) the voices that were in time would disappear and then come back in lagging and vice versa.

    • @HealthSoundsMusic
      @HealthSoundsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's because, unfortunately:
      1) all video conferencing has some sort of lag
      2) they are not designed to have audio happening together simultaneously. That's why I have my students echo me and the piano, instead of playing with them. I experienced the exact same thing.
      In Zoom, I don't think there's a setting or a way to fix those issues you've been having.

    Great advice ! Thanks for the mic settings. I’m teaching electronic music through Zoom and using an app called Loopback (expensive) to route any and multiple sources to any and multiple monitors. This is especially useful when teaching DAW but could be used when teaching a piano connected via usb.

    Hi Florian (hope I spelled that correctly), Thank you so very much! Your suggested setting changes solved my specific recording problem with Zoom!! You are indeed brilliant!!! I was getting a really weird sound when recording my piano in a Zoom meeting though it sounded fine with exactly the same setup using Audacity. I was able to continue to use my wireless internet connection, but my Zooming laptop is only about 10 feet from the wireless router. I do keep it plugged into the charger. And this is using the built in laptop mike, but an external amp and speaker! I believe this is going to also solve a problem I'm having with a very similar distorted sound when another meeting member plays her piano live during a Zoom meeting. I can't wait to try that out at a more normal hour. :-) Blessings!

    It looks like Zoom has changed the Advanced Audio Settings. Can you help us with an update on which settings to select (or not select)? It has "Echo cancellation" options of "Auto" or "Aggressive", and "When original sound is enabled" you have three options: "Disable echo cancellation", "High fidelity music mode", and "Use stereo audio". Can you help? Thank you so much! :-) You are awesome.

    The suggestion of using an external speaker is just crazy (for musicians) - perhaps it's necessary for exercise. The best and most efficient way to transmit high quality sound to the students is the "use computer sound" checkbox in the lower left of the "Share Screen" window.

    Hello and thank you thank you THANK YOU!!! This video saved me!!! I truly appreciate everything from this video. I have one question. I am a fitness/yoga instructor and all of the things you shared I have done and has worked amazingly! The only thing now is every so often about 30 min or so into the workout my camera will turn off and I will freeze. I use the ethernet cord so I know it can't be the connection. I have had my peeps all leave the meeting and we start again and that seems to work.....have you had this happen? I am using my laptop camera. Thank you in advance!! Much love!!

    • @HealthSoundsMusic

      Could it be an internal setting for your camera? Or do you have your laptop set to sleep after so many minutes? You could try disabling that.

      Hi, is your computer running on batteries? Some computers are set to save electricity by limiting power to USB devices after a certain number of minutes of "idle time" (the computer may not be smart enough to realize that just because you're not interacting with it doesn't mean it's idle). Go into your advanced power settings and try to find any setting that will conserve power to the USB devices, cameras, audio, media... Also just having the computer plugged into the wall may cause it to not do this.

    Thank you. Two questions.
    1) So you do not use the option (for fitness/dance lessons) of sending the music straight from your computer? I love how the music travels to them if you're playing it and sharing it with the advanced setting, but then yes, I want the microphone for my voice and not sure which microphone to use.
    2) Do you know of a clip mic or wearable mic that you could recommend which does not include earphones as well?

    • @HealthSoundsMusic
      @HealthSoundsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For fitness classes, I personally do not use the option of sending music directly from the computer because I need to cue my class. That works great in dance classes like Zumba where there's no verbal cues, only physical. For what you're asking, there are a couple of options. If your space is small, you should be able to get away with a simple USB mic, like the Blue Snowball I showed in my video. The internal mics in laptops, etc, are generally pretty crappy. :) If you want something with more beef that you can connect with another audio source, like a big speaker system, I use the XIAOKOA 2.4G Wireless Microphone (on Amazon for about $30) with ION Audio Tailgater Plus Bluetooth speaker system. I hope this helps!

      In the Android version of the Zoom app the settings are to be found in the top left hand corner of the Start a Meeting/Join a Meeting page. Click on the little wheel there, then on the next page click on "Meeting" which gives access to the "Meeting Settings" page, and by scrolling down you can find the switch to "Use Original Sound" which is by far the most important one when it comes to getting music to sound even remotely like music.
