Can we give some props for the announcers knowing their rules too 😂😂😂
What's likely is that someone in the control room knows the rules and they tell the announcers what's going on. But I also wouldn't be surprised if the announcers themselves knew a good majority of these obscure rules.
David Wang This. These guys get payed lots of money to announce this, they won’t know every thing but will definitely be at same knowledge level as head coach’s
These announcers aren't just picked up off the streets. They do their homework, they know the game in and out. The amount of notes they take on every game is astounding, and knowing the past of all the players and all of the stats that they memorize. This job is much harder than it looks.
Also, the announcers are typically older, they've known the rule changes over time and the evolution of the game. They know their stuff, I highly doubt there is someone in a control room giving them instructions.
That rule is the most bogus in sports. It allows the receiver to take an inbounds ball out of bounds and get a benefit for it. Just moronic to penalize the other team for being skilled
Rumor has it they have the packers read the whole rule book every season
Pectonic HD you’d think so right lol
It's true my mom has a friend on the Kansas City Chiefs who is the special team coach and it went around the NFL and my mom's friend told my who told me.
@@duanemonroe419 lol what?? Told who, who told then who told him to tell what? Lol the fuck is you saying.
that’s why packers are best
Pectonic HD that’s a very Green Bay thing to do
1 thing i learned in basketball that i also learned works in football, the plays not over until the ref blows the whistle.
Yuuuupp! Play until the ref stops you. Also, it is not a score until you cross that line or until the ball goes through the net. So many instances where people assume they got the score and stop trying - and it bites them in the ass.
Technically, in football, it depends on hwere the ball is for touchdowns, not the player. Thats why they often stick it out in front of themselves
I thought this was common knowledge amongst athletes
On the unfortunate flip side, plays that per rules SHOULDN'T be over, will be over anyways when the ref incorrectly blows the whistle.
No touchdown for the Rams vs Saints. I think the Rams had 20 players on the field when he crossed the goal line.

Great to see my Packers represented so much. Also, Mason Crosby very nearly got himself the longest field goal record. That guy is such a staple on the team it's gonna be weird when he retires in 30ish years.
Had it not been below freezing, it would've gone in. Had it not been for the wind blowing in his face, it would've gone in. Had it not been for both of those things and if it was 70 with wind to his back, that kick might've gone from 80. What a kick

@@ReMz10184 They probably weren't as compressed when you first saw them and if you were watching on a smaller TV they wouldn't look as bad either.
You didn't notice the quality then really (especially with smaller tv's) other than when reception was bad and they're not as bad as the clips you see that have been digitised after the original tapes have been degrading. Even with my HD on a 4d tv worth a small car, the artefacts and ghosting (especially on overhead zip wire cams) can be distracting. That's on 60". The fair catch kick is one of my favorite rules in all of football and I genuinely hope we see more of them. They are extremely risky, but if you’re down by 1 with a few seconds left, why not try it and see? It’s probably got better odds than a Hail Mary, and is likely the best chance kickers have of breaking the field goal record
I agree. Unfortunately, the only times I have ever seen these are at the very end of the first half.
It's just another reason why kickoffs in the final seconds are often squib kicks...no fair catch possible.
The reason it’s almost never seen is because if you attempt a fair catch kick and miss, you’ve turned the ball over.
A rule change is like to see: on a missed fair catch kick, you don’t turn the ball over, instead you lose ten yards but keep the ball.
That’ll allow more attempts, but not a gratuitous attempt after every fair catch.
The problem is the kicker is not the one who does the actual kicking for the fair catch free kick. It's whoever called the fair catch. So it would be good to give all your players a little bit of kicking practice
@@paul16451 you can fair catch call an onsides kick or squib kick if your fast enough
This is one of the reasons why I got so hooked on NFL football: it's not only roughing, pulling and tackling; there's _also_ quite a bit of strategy involved to end on top.
and then in media the football players are always the dumb ones lmao

I’m just in awe of the ability of the refs to know the depth of the rule book, and apply to what’s happening. Not even a hint of indecision or hesitation with any of the refs in the video. Truly something to admire
Good reffing in any sport is incredible to watch, baseball another one where there are so many rules and to watch an umpire nail every call and get the lesser know rules called correctly is a marvel
To be fair, that's literally their job. You might as well say you're impressed by how far a quarterback can throw a ball, or how good of hands a receiver has.
NFL refs shit all over soccer ones for this reason. They're also more transparent not just to the players, but everyone else watching.
@@Gamer2k4 Except a qb throws the ball dozens of times a game. That's not a rare situation. Some of these situations are rare, like the drop kick or the undowned ball at the end of the half. You could also argue it's just as much the player's jobs to know these rules just as well, and look at how many of them miss it.

No matter how a football bounces, it always takes a "football" bounce.
Isn't that not the case anymore? The rules were probably different when that clip is from, but nowadays if a punt is touched first by the kicking team, it's dead at the spot it's touched, and if a kickoff lands in the end zone, then it's automatically a touchback. The receiving team isn't required to down it. I don't think this could happen today.

Do you guys remember that football comedy show from the 90's on Comedy Central called, "Offsides With Dom Irrera?" What I wouldn't give to find copies of THAT show today! It was 40-50 years of pro football footage, with each episode focusing on unique and interesting plays/events with funny commentary in the background.
NFL Films did a video called NFL's Newest Follies (1995) that was hosted by Dom Irrera. Most of the things that was on Offsides is on that video. During the offseason they show it on NFL Network as filler with all the old Football Follies. Most of the old follies videos are on TH-cam if you know the title.
This is easily my favorite highlight video. It is so interesting to see the most particular rules (or lack there of) exploited. Even if it doesn't make sense, there's nothing they can do while the game is in play. It's awesome.
Robert Tilden thanks!
Highlight Heaven Of course! Thank TH-cam recommendations for actually doing its job for once too. hahaha
There was this Ravens-Bengals game that I watched live and the Ravens had to punt on 4th down near the end of the game. They didn't want to give Cinci the ball back so they could score a potential game winning TD so they intentionally held the Bengals' players, resulting in the game ending in a penalty. I think this was in 2016 or 2017, I can't find the clip, but they changed the rule the following season saying the game cannot end on a penalty. Ravens ended up winning the game. John Harbaugh is like Billichick, he will cull through the rulebook.
Figured the Patriots 2014 Divisional Playoff game against the Ravens would be in this video. They really had the formations down to a science. So much to where the immediately banned the tactic.
Could you elaborate? The only thing I recall from a Pats-Ravens playoff game was a fourth and short, Pats ball. It was a heavy formation and TB was looking towards his sideline and yelling, his hands pointing at his helmet like there was something wrong with the radio in his helmet. At that moment the Pats did a direct snap to the running back who ran it for the first down. Great bit of misdirection.
@@srj34 I think it was something like determining who was an eligible receiver or not?(Is that it?)
Yeah they had their TE line up in the left tackle spot uncovered, and their RB line up on the right side in the slot but technically as an ineligible lineman since the receiver to his right was on the line, too. The TE was actually eligible, so instead of blocking he ran upfield and caught a pass. It was a popular college play. The Pats ran the play three times that game, but it only worked on the 3rd attempt. Harbaugh then said after the game that nobody had ever seen that type of play before and demanded the rule be changed, lol.
This is taken directly from wikipedia:
"the Patriots went with four linemen, while playing tight end Michael Hoomanawanui and running back Shane Vereen on the line next to them. This confused the Baltimore defense as to which players were eligible receivers - though they did announce it to officials as required - aiding the Patriots on a 9-play, 80-yard touchdown drive in which the team never faced a third down."
They did this tactic of reporting ineligible receivers just before they lined up then lining up said receivers as if they were eligible leaving the Ravens little time to figure out who to cover. The NFL made this tactic illegal the next season because teams are too stupid to figure out who's ineligible or not (even though the refs told them each time who NOT to cover)
@@c.m.654 I remember the refs literally saying "#34 is ineligible. Don't cover him".

True that brotherin
A lot of these rules stem from football’s rugby roots.
that's very interesting
Except they took more out than the CFL has, basically in the CFL any player can punt on any down anywhere and punts and fieldgoal misses that go through the back of the endzone gives a single point, if it's a tie game, instead of going for the game winning fieldgoal, they'll sometimes punt it to win or run a play and if the play fails, trying to punt it through the back
The fair catch is called a "mark" in rugby - and drop kicks are a lot more commonplace (and win England World Cups!)

Oh I'm expecting my double doink now
If the Packers want to intimidate their opponents, have their players reading large copies of the NFL rulebook during every play. Let their opponents see them reading and smiling.
Some may not know this, but a couple years ago I thought of a complete advantage within the rules that would have been disastrous if it were ever to be used. It would have been on the line between honor and win at all costs. And the NFL changed it without ever mentioning why they changed it. So, now when there are "imminent" 12+ players on defense they blow the whistle and call the 5 yard penalty before the snap/clock. I always thought (a few years ago when it was legal) that if you kicked off to an opponent and they were down let's say 4 points with 40 seconds left. Why not put 40 men on defense and make the offense waste time. Imagine dropping back with 40 seconds left trying to push the ball down the field and there are 30 extra guys on the field. You waste the time and get 5 yards per play. You could bleed the offense via too many men on the field.
I thought up this strategy a few years ago and the NFL, via there "imminent too many men" penalty defeated it, and rightfully so.
the offense could use some sort of spike play to get rid of the ball instantly for an incompletion and continuously go down the field
@@aaronfandel9426 True! Would still disrupt the offense spectacularly. We will never know how it would affect a desperate offense.

I wish you would have showed more of the Ravens blatant holding on the Bengals on the non-punt safety. The last clip also is very very clever because he not only knew what was going on... He glanced at the other teams players and noticed nobody caught on..... Genius
1:55 bro thats litterally genius because they all holding while he chills thats genuis but disrespectful and dirty
The most interesting one to me is that if there is something like 10 seconds left or more, you can tell all of your offensive players to hold to run off the clock because the game can end on offensive penalties. Even if the defenders get flagged, the offense can waive off the flags and the opposition never gets a play.
Some of these niche rules must come from American Football’s connection to/origins from rugby. In rugby you get a “free kick” from a mark(fair catch), used to be if a part of your body was out of bounds when initially touching the ball you’re an extension of the out of bounds for a ball moving or in flight(law got changed last year) & in rugby you must drop kick restarts & have the option of drop kicking conversations

The last one was AWESOME!
Jedi Knight Jairin Aiki Can you explain why that happened. I thought for punts it didn't have to be caught by a PR. If the opposing team touches it it is considered down
@@kevinanthony5296 The opposing kicked the ball. What occurred is that the ball never bounced out of bounds and no one touched the ball. This allowed the receiving team to pick up the ball (yes even in the endzone) and run it back for a touchdown. However, that's the old rule and they changed it in 2004. If that happened today, the ball is taken from the 20 yard line by the receiving team.
Everybody talking ab how smart they are but didnt notice belichick smiled
I love when players actually know the rules
Who's here after barber from Raiders picked it up then stepped out at 2
That first play by Cobb was awesome
Not only did he know the rule, his teammates did too. The one Packer who was standing between him and the ref turned immediately to the ref to see if he would throw the flag, and all of Cobb's teammates who were nearby were congratulating him without needing an explanation of what he just did.
Happy belichick...WEIRD
Isnt it?

Yes, different sports are different. Not really that mind blowing.
@@Blueshirt38 Actually it's not the sport, it's the ball.
They're not impressed because it's hard. They're just impressed because no one ever does it and its harder than the alternative with no benefit. It was his last play of his career.
Just wanna say thank u to who ever made this video!!!!! It was fantastic
4:45 they need to make this work in Madden
With the right kicker it would be too over powered
Completely ignore your offense get a jacked up kicker and defense. Would be the most hilarious football team ever

@@user-eq1jv3oo5v Holy shit, this isn't football?!? What league do I have to follow to see more of this kind of shit?!?
@@SonofaBetsch dunno just looks like pussys wearing armour to play rugby to me, guess they can't handle real hits
Facts Funny you mention that. The World Rugby league just set up a weight limit for their players because they couldn’t take the hits. Seems to me like they can’t take a hit. You fucking dumbass haha.
Is the free kick still in ? Cause TUCKER CAN MAKE THAT
its still possible
David Riedy after a fair catch the receiving team can elect to take a free kick
@David Riedy its very rare but basically a team has to be punting very close to their own goal line. The opposing team fair catches the punt at the 50 yard line (for example). They can opt to do the fair catch kick (free kick). It usually happens before the half but I believe it can happen at any point of the game. and im not sure if it can count as the longest field goal.
David Riedy after a fair catch you can either take a possession or try to kick a field goal with no defenders trying to block it. Unless it’s the end of the half you obviously take the ball. At the end of the half you consider kicking though
AND TUCKER CAN MAKE THIS WHY THE HELL HAVENT THE RAVENS DID THIS
If anyone is wondering, the reason that the “free” kick was taken is because someone called a fair caught and Jim Harbaugh elected to take a free kick from the fair catch instead of taking control on offense- something that is rarely done
Julio Jones hit to break up the interception should make its way to this list. That was a great heads up play.
TheReal Trucker it was on offensive players on defense comp
L
But how is thst knowing the rules?
How does that have anything to do with knowing the rules???
radconserv68 as an offensive player he realized the defender was now an eligible receiver and he laid the smack down on him. It’s a play we rarely see because Wide Outs aren’t thinking about the rules of the game from a defensive side of the ball, especially in such split second manner.
I enjoyed this and I don't even like football
me too
*Agree*
same, still don't understand what went on on the last clip though
Yeah
it's not even football..
1:31 first time I've ever seen belichick smile
Can someone explain to me the whole “free kick” thing, like when Crosby and the other dude took the 70+ yard field goals
Its called a fair catch kick. When a team makes a fair catch they have the option to attempt a free kick from the spot they caught the ball at. It can be a place kick or a drop kick and if it goes through the upright its worth a field goal. The other team isnt allowed to rush it. Its really rare and most people dont even know about it but the panthers actually attempted one this past weekend.
TTP Ballin #FTR damn u beat me too it 😂😂
TTP Ballin #FTR lmao I’ve watched football for all my life (granted only 16 years) but I’ve still never seen this happen. Is it legal in college too?
@@ttpballinftr1827 I'm guessing that this only happens after onside kicks. After a regular kickoff, the receiving team would too way too far away to attempt a fair catch kick.
Jeff Green Well u arent allowed to fair catch the ball after it hits the ground so u cant rly use it on an onside kick. The only real practical use is off a short punt before the half. Its pretty much an alternative option to a hail mary.
Why are the Saints players and ESPECIALLY coaches shocked by the Rams player picking up the ball @5:30 and returning it for a touchdown? Of course that's a live ball! WTF?
Vintage Vinyl it’s a lot easier to tell from a tv perspective
can you explain why it was live if it was a punt and landed in the end zone
@@bradywilder4425in those days...it was a live ball if it landed in the end zone. The rule was changed just a few years ago. Today...if it lands in the end zone, it's an automatic touchback.
@@MICHAEL_MAY_8 ooohhhhh, that would clarify my confusion with this play. Thank you!
The first bounce is forward and almost lands out of bounds. If the second bounce is even an inch forward it probably lands out of bounds, but it unexpectedly bounces back. You often see the bounce back on a first bounce , but I don't remember seeing the bounce reverse direction very often (possibly never?)
