    In New Zealand our native sweet potato is called Kumera and it's much nicer than the orange variety (purple skin/white flesh). I'm currently growing my Kumera slips and hope to plant soon. Seeing your great harvest from the raised bed has decided me on planting my Kumera in the same. Great job you did.

      Best of luck for you. This is the second year that the raised bed has far and away been the best producer or the purple skin/white flesh sweet potatoes. Next year I will not bother to plant any of them in containers. I will move some of the plants in the raised beds to the containers and make more raised bed room. Boy do we love these white sweet potatoes. Almost like a idaho baked potato.

    That's exactly what mine did in the raised beds! I just kept digging and kept finding them deep! Although I need to work on my soil! Thanks for sharing!!! Happy Harvesting from Virginia! ~jc

    How do you cure the sweet potatoes and how long does it take. The raised bed was amazing what kind of sweet potato slip did you use. If I want to plant at the end of May when should I start trying to get potato slips by putting the sweet potato in water? Sorry for the long question but this was the best SP video I have seen yet....awesome!

      The closest I can come to during is to put in trays with a big fan blowing on them. For me it takes about 3 weeks of that for them to get sweet. I start the potatoes for slips in February. Can take a month or more to get slips starting . If they grow to fast just trim them back. Those trimmings will root also. I used store bought Beauregard sweet potatoes and the Japanese purple store sweet potatoes. I same some sweet potatoes each year to root the next year.

    Wonderful.. I've been thinking of planting sweet potatoes in containers too. (Though it came out of impulse) got couple of sweet potatoes weeks ago and they've been sitting in water since then for sprouting.. I know it'll take time til the sprouts are good for planting but still is it ideal to plant them while weather is still cold??

    • @GrowAndEatThis
      @GrowAndEatThis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sweet potatoes want hot weather. Plant in the cold and I think they will just rot and die. They are one of the last things I plant in the late spring. About the same time I can put eggplant out.

    So how many slips did you put in the container compared to the raised bed

    • @GrowAndEatThis
      @GrowAndEatThis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think all the containers got 3 slips. The raised bed had 5. I have had better results in the containers with the regular orange sweet potatoes. The white flesh Japanese sweet potatoes definitely need more room to grow.

    Thank you

      I plant when the night time lows are 55F or higher. Sweet potatoes want hot weather. If the ground is too cold the plants will just rot.

    When did you plant your slips? I live in Elberton & not sure how long they should take before harvesting.

    • @GrowAndEatThis
      @GrowAndEatThis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine were started indoors and planted out side in end of May to the first week in June. Have to really wait for it to get hot. You want them to be growing in the ground for 110 to 120 days.

      I started out with organic potatoes from the grocery store. Try a Fresh Market, Whole Foods, Sprouts to get some nice ones. Does not matter the shape. Long and skinny gives you lots of space for sprouts to grow.

      110 - 120 days. So it is time to harvest. Good luck.
