    Just got denied by the NYC embassy for the first round of acceptances for MEXT after working on the research proposal for a month, gonna try again next year, but this scholarship is no walk in the park. It is extremely competitive, so keep that in mind for everyone applying!

    I was the only MEXT scholarship applicant that made it to interview rounds over 7 years ago. The reason I didnt make it past interview and "failed" was they pulled professors of Japanese descent from surrounding Universities in Houston and ALL their questions stemmed of why I want to leave the US, the US has a better higher education system, do I hate America....blah blah blah. I left the interview biting my cheek and ran to the restroom to cry. I wanted so badly to say back, why did you or your parents leave Japan for America? It was almost as they were mad that I hated America which I DONT! I just wanted to study another culture and language since America IS a melting pot....never tried again as I felt humiliated

    Years ago I watched your video about applying for the MEXT, and last year I graduated with my masters as a MEXT scholar. I really appreciated your video as one of the few informational videos out there about the MEXT and I'm sure lots of people will find this video insanely helpful as well! I agreed with a lot of your points. As for my experience, I would put extra emphasis on being prepared the entrance exam for grad students. My MEXT friends and I had no idea beforehand that an entrance exam was required, and let me tell you these exams were brutal for my school (U of Toyko). Many of us ended up failing at least once (even math and engineering friends). In my case, I failed the first year and had to wait a whole year to take it again. Mind you I had passed N1 the summer before I took the test (in December), so the level required to pass was literally a step above N1. At the time, I was depressed, but by the end of the masters I was so grateful I failed. As you said classes were intense and writing a decent master's thesis wouldn't have been possible if not for the grueling entrance exam and classes. Good luck to all who are applying now or in the future! I feel blessed to have had the opportunity despite the difficulties I experienced!
    PS: This comment is already too long, but what she said about job hunting is so true!! Finding a job seemed to be as hard as getting the degree itself! I knew some poor souls who couldn't find anything and had to go home. The only friends who did find a good job were the ones were had internships and such and were proactive from the get-go.

      I’m sorry. I know I’m very late to this and the question might seem vague. But what most valuable advice would you give to future MEXT applicants?
      What do you believe in your case set your whole application process stand out in the crowd of all others?

    • @fearthetree
      @fearthetree หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ELEETIST Hi! That's a hard question because tbh it depends on the region/ country you're applying from. Some are much more competitive than others. For my region, it actually wasn't that competitive. Off the top of my head, I would say having good Japanese skills and a detailed, professional, good research plan will put you ahead of a lot of people. But even if your Japanese isn't great, a good research plan will probably help you a lot.

I can’t do it like the Japanese students, nor do I possess any of their cultural knowledge about it, and the career support is all in Japanese, which isn’t helpful at all. I know it seems you’re going to focus on the application stuff more, but I would really appreciate a video in more detail on that period of exit for you - your last year or so reaching out to companies, internships, how well you transitioned after graduation, how you found companies to reach out to. All of it. I feel really lost and this one video was like a small beacon of light for me. So thank you again.

    I don't know if you've covered this in a different video, but I think I've definitely received a certain level of antagonism from some locals regarding being a government-funded scholar (the whole using their tax dollars thing) which I have struggled a bit to grapple with. I find it hard to identify if it's from a xenophobic sort of place, but it's interesting since in the US I would never hear anyone talk poorly of Fulbright scholars from other countries, for example. I could also go on a rant about how MEXT has not made any amendments to the stipend amount to account for inflation and how the COL adjustment by location is a bit insulting for those who have to contend with the COL in Tokyo lol. But anyways it could be an interesting future video topic!

    I had watched you MEXt videos before I applied to MEXT prior to the pandemic for the research student portion, my friend helped me draft everything, for months on end, preparing. Got everything in. Waited. Got denied. The pandemic hit and they cancelled it completely for that year. Tried again, got denied again. Tried to even just go to a language school, and jumping through the amount of hoops they have was so impossible that I just coughed it up to it's not meant for me. I tried my hardest, but sometimes rejection is a redirection, and eventually I ended up not even wanting to do school anymore because I made a living for myself by my own means here. Honestly, I'm pretty happy it didn't work out. I have a much better life than what I could have imagined back then.
    My cousin is a video game developer in Japan so I can go and crash on his couch when I want lol, but I definitely do not see myself living or moving to Japan. My dad is kind of mad about it because he wanted something to brag about since it's his nephew that lives there. -_- But like, I created my own business, I have time freedom & location freedom, I'm working towards financial freedom. And I'm now 31, and honestly in the portion of my life where I'm thinking about marriage and children. Things changed! Especially when I met someone. I've always known I wanted kids and marriage, it just came down to meeting the right person to be with. I didn't want just anyone. I was single for over 4 years before meeting the right person. My dad will get over it, it's my life anyway.

    One thing that fascinates me about Japan is that it's fairly common that hospitals will NOT offer anesthesia to young mothers giving birth for the first time. I am still puzzled as to whether it's a cultural thing or an economic scarcity sort of thing. It sounds like there is a belief, I am not sure where it comes from, that first time mothers should give birth naturally. But I am not sure that makes any sense.

    I literally just got an email from MEXT this morning that bears a bad news; my application has been rejected based on the written examination that I did last month. (I applied for MEXT for undergraduate.)
    Boy am I devastated right now. Though it was not a total surprise that I didn't pass the exam..because the Math exam was SO HARD. I chose the Social Science course which features English, Math A and Japanese exams..
    I did studied (+answering some past mext math A papers) before attending the examination because it was important for me to do so as the last time I ever studied math was in high school. I went and get my diploma after high school at a College and there were zero Math classes (English Communication Diploma. Similar to Sociology).
    I am still young enough to apply for the MEXT application again and I may do so..but man the Math exam was so difficult for me.

    I'm glad you're doing well, and thanks for secret list of schools. I just noticed the school I'm graduating from now and the school I'll be joining for my PhD in Japan are on the list. That's pretty lucky! Does have more than one give extra points for the visa?

    I passed the application portion for the specialized training scholarship. There were 2 other people with me, the english was easy... the Japanese was a bit tricky... i have been studying Japanese with a teacher but the exam there were many vocabulary and structures that i haven't locked it in my head. But the math... i feel like i was let down because my high school made us rely on calculators that when came the exam i froze.. i recognized the problems but didn't know how to solve them... in all honesty i flunked it but never left it blank. Im not sure if there going to pass me through but ill know tomorrow. There can only be so much said on an application and an exam but the real thing that shows who you truly are is not by some test scores...its the chance to talk to the person... thats what shows them who you really are. Even though if i dont make it, that doesnt mean im going to quit learning Japanese and not become a Mangaka Artist in Japan....Never... no matter what i will find another way. I feel like Naruto when he was taking the Chunin exams... not knowing anything and worried if he is going to pass but through it all he somehow managed to find another way... "just you wait.. some day ill become a Mangaka Artist who can speak japanese... because thats my ninja way" "Until i become a Mangaka Artist in Japan who can speak fluent N1 Japanese.. theres no way im giving up... BECAUSE THATS WHO I AM"

    Should a person do good, let him do it again and again. Let him find pleasure therein, for blissful is the accumulation of good.
    The liar goes to the state of woe; also he who, having done (wrong), says, "I did not do it." Men of base actions both, on departing they share the same destiny in the other world.

    Hi, I think I am somewhat in the same situation as you were. I am in grad school in Japan (studying architecture ) where I am the only foreigner. I want to work in Japan but again, even thinking working in company with only Japanese gives me anxiety ( partucularly because of my poor language). And going thru job interviews gives me nightmare. There are 発見会社s with many foreigner employees, but the pay, facilities are just so, so. How was your experience as a shakaijin. If its Ok to you please also share what type of company you worked in.

    Thanks a lot for this video! I didn't know that I had to apply for the MEXT so long before, so I unfortunately didn't apply... However I'm curious about the list you are mentioning. I checked it, and it seems that 2 of the universities I attended are on it, the one I'm going to attend is on the list, and I intend to ask for an exchange program during my program in Japan to one of the university ALSO on the list. The big question is now: attending 4 (or 3 if I don't get the exchange program) universities of the list count?? or do they just count it one time? Thanks a lot!

    • @kemushichan
      @kemushichan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Whichever ones you've done a full program and graduated from (not exchange) would count towards points. You then get additional points for different levels of degrees and for them being in Japan, so not exactly the same category but you can squeeze points out of different schools for sure!

    Is it possible to get a 2-year student visa for a normal Japanese language class, perhaps private not associated with a University. I am older and just want to learn Japanese. I have enough saved up that I would not have to work for two years. So I wouldn't mind studying full time or part time. Do you have any videos on language programs. Or could you possibly offer some links or do a future video. I need to move to Japan since my Mom is very ill in a nursing home. And I want to spend some time with her before she passes. She is a US citizen, currently a Japan permanent resident. She used to be a Japanese citizen but gave it up when she married my Dad in Hawaii. He was Japanese American born in Hawaii to Japanese parents.

    So to get a master's degree you need to transition as an actual student correct? And you go through the entrance exam? If you dont do this what does the research account for, just experience in your CV?

    • @kemushichan
      @kemushichan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, your research would just be on your CV. If you arrange to publish it with your school per the HSP visa rules you might be able to get 5 pts that way but not every university is set up for the correct publishing method 😵‍💫

    I have a huge question...as someone who wants to live in japan i just have to ask if it is true that jaapanese people dislike foreigners and that it is difficult to live in japan as a foreigner???

    • @kemushichan
      @kemushichan  ปีที่แล้ว

      I really think it comes down to attitude and willingness to learn the language. It's not perfect here but no where is, and I've enjoyed my life here so much. I've met people who have struggled here who very obviously would have struggled back home for the same issues.
      Either way it's worth trying for a bit. I feel like you'll know in about a year.

    My schools in the UK are on that list! I’m about to graduate from a a masters course here. I felt like the Mext was too advanced for me at the time and chose to do schooling here and think about a PhD at Waseda. I had no idea it gave you extra points, and no idea non-Japanese schools are also on the list! This gives me hope if I decide against mext (or I’m not accepted). And when you say 1 year fast track, does this mean 1 year off the original 10 years or it you only have to wait one year to be eligible for the PR?

    • @kemushichan
