kriegsman generally don't get along with other non-krieger guardsman. there are quite a number of reasons why, among them:
    1. krieger uniforms are chemically treated to resist chemical weapons, but they also stink as a side effect
    2. kriegers are told to treat their equipment as a second skin, so they almost never remove their gas masks, which hides their humanity from other guardsman
    3. kriegers frequently berate their fellow guardsman if they see them not performing to their own standards (which are often absurd)
    4. kriegers are primarily motivated by shame and penance rather than honor, duty and other such motivations, which makes them a bit of a downer to other guardsman
imagine going to work and the guy sitting next to you always wears a balaclava, smells like chlorine all the time, barely ever talks to you and when he does, all he has to say is how little overtime you're putting in and how he has to (and will) work absurd hours because his dad stabbed a guy, so he has to work himself to the bone and put ever cent he makes towards that guy's medical bills or something

The best summery of the Death Korps of Krieg is the way the Imperial Commissars treat them. Usually Commissars have to inspire a willingness to "die for the Emperor". Commissars attached to Krieg units have to keep the Kriegsmen from "dyeing for the Emperor too quickly" and actually act like tacticians.
The Marine Chapter there is the Dark Angels. The sword and wings on the left shoulder are their sigil.

@@seanironfist8887 Sometimes DKoK commit a mutiny. Especially when the commisar is a coward and orders his men to retreat (even if it's a good tactical decision).
The first problem is that most commisars are not native to the planet of Krieg and therefore the soldiers don't respect them to such an extreme degree as other Astra Militarum regiments.
The second problem is the fact that most Krieg soldiers actually believe their most important task in life is to sacrifice themselves for the Emperor of Mankind. So there's that.
Combine these two facts and I think now you'll be able to figure out why mutiny is much more common among Krieg units.

The Salamanders are green with gold trim, have a drake's head as their insignia, and almost exclusively use incendiary weapons. Easiest way to tell them apart.
-The Guard forces were from the Cadian shock troops. You could tell because they had purple eyes. The Cadians got these as a mutation from being born under the Eye of Terror.
-The Death Korps of Krieg don't dislike them, but there is definitely a certain machismo going on. They probably thought the Cadians were amateurs because their tanks didn't have any bayonets or something.
-The enemy forces were traitor guardsmen. Pretty competent, but lacked extensive military training.
-The Traitor (Chaos) Space Marines were from two separate legions. The ones in black were from The Black Legion. These are the descendants of the personal legion of Arch-Traitor Horus Lupercal himself, and are currently sort of the poster boys for the Chaos Marines. From what you said at the beginning of the video, it's not really smack talk. The Krieg are known to be utterly psychotic in their devotion to death for the Emperor and the fact you never see their faces is very unnerving to other regiments. When the Krieg show up, you know it's gonna be nasty. Even astartes sometimes have been like Jesus Christ lol. Their own commissars are there to restrain their zeal in battle, which is the opposite of what they do for everyone else

  • @Codex_0613
    @Codex_0613 3 ปีที่แล้ว +69

just adding another comment in: the "spark" that u said at the beginning
the Krieg doesn't work very well with the majority of the IG faction, because the Krieg deem everyone else who isn't wholly devoted their entire existence to the Emperor and ready to die by the moment's notice is a weakling. And the Krieg is also very stubborn in their approach of warfare, so much so that the commissars assigned to the Krieg act more like a liason between them and other IG faction, rather than being a political officer as they normally would be.
Hell, there are stories of commissars getting executed by the Krieg because the commissars didn't display enough zeal to die for the Emperor. And the Krieg would write up a report as normal and submit that to their superior very nonchalantly, as if they were just squashing a pesky bug. That's how hardcore these guys are, they really don't give a shit about anything else, but Emperor help you if you stand in their way.

the Krieg don't actually just willy nilly execute people for the slightest inconvenient. They're a very disciplined faction that obey a superior's order above all else. All the jokes about them executing others are just that: jokes. It all stemmed from a couple of actual canon lore incidents where they actually execute others because their superior officer's order supersede the guys who told them otherwise.
Most famous example of this: During the war on Vrak, Nurgle's chaos forces used a bioweapon so foul and deadly that it corrodes anything it touches. And they pour it all over the trenches of the Krieg, forcing them to retreat (and even then, they only retreated back one trench line). A commissar was seen ordering them to stay, even though the bioweapon cloud is creeping in, the Krieg just straight up shot the commissar and then proceed onward with their retreat.

One of my favorite things about kreigers is two times they've killed commissars. One time it was for not having enough zeal. The other was because he tried to stop them from retreating from an unwinnable fight (a demonic horde). If they had stayed, they would have all died for nothing. People seem to forget that kreigers aren't suicidal. They won't charge a position if they know there is no chance of them getting through with enough men to make a difference. They are not afraid to die if it means they will win.

There are four Imperial units involved in this skirmish:
    A Cadian infantry regiment
    An unidentified armored regiment
    Two Dark Angel space marines
And a Death Riders regiment of Kriegers.
One thing about the Guard is that they don't have combined arms units. Mechanized, aviation, jump troopers, artillery, armored and infantry units are purely the previous up to regiment level. Only when multiple regiments are together can the commanders hash out combined arms.

Yeah, people don't get why I rage when they call it a shovel. A shovel is what you have in the shed. The kill was with an Entrenching Tool, a weapon that goes back to WWI where E-tools were among the many improvised close combat weapons employed during the war which included trench made maces, swords, and sundry insanity. What's the difference between a shovel and an entrenching tool? An E-tool is made of metal, has a serrated edge and a sharpened edge, is all metal, folds, is found in a soldier's ruck, makes a great improvised axe, is only moderately useful for actually digging (short handle makes it handy in close use but vs a full handled shovel it is more tiring to use and has less leverage). A shovel on the other hand has a long handle, does not fold for easy storage, is very useful for digging, not really that great as a close combat weapon.

Just to clarify, of the Imperial guardsmen in the video, the Death Korps were the ones wearing the gas masks. The other guardsmen are likely Cadians - very adept tactically and well drilled, but they're not as 'suicidal' as Death Korps guardsmen. Also, the Astartes in green power armour are Dark Angels as seen from their insignia. Had they been Salamanders, the bolters they'd use would also likely have bolts that burst into flame in that they're filled with promethean aka Inferno bolts. Anything fiery is a Salamander favourite.

they don't scream battlecry, they just advance and they will take their objective, even if they have to sacrifice themselves to the last man
there's no greater honor for them but to die on the battlefield for the Emperor
also a quick fact: their uniform is actually a sealed suit that can withstand high level radiation and other harsh conditions, the Krieg themselves are trained to think of their uniform and gas mask as their skin. So it's very rare that they would ever take it off, even to eat or drink. They're specialized in attrition and trench warfare.

krieg entrenchment tool is actually a pretty effective weapons, they are usually sharpened to be used as an axe in close combat, not necessarily the best idea when it come to safety but it make for an actually good melee weapon

The green marines here were Dark Angels, my personal favorites. You can tell by the winged sword emblem on the left pauldron, and the swords on the right pauldron which indicate veterancy within the Dark Angels (it's usually represented by a single red sword).

Entrenching Tools are the melee weapon of choice for Kriegers. Sometimes they are used for digging trenches. In the fluff most guardsmen will sharpen their shovel though, turns out it's an effective way of getting someone out of your grill.

He's a tank commander looking at cavalry in a sort of 'seriously?' way at the beginning. Then all the tanks get wrecked and the cavalry (literally and figuratively) save the day, so the look at the end is a sort of 'Yes, seriously'.

Kriegsmen really like their shovels. They're super WW1/2-themed and do a lot of trenchyshit, and also shovels are cool, so their close combat weapon tends to just be a shovel.
Watching shorter stuff without pauses, then doing the pick-outs sounds pretty good I think.
You should try the Emperor Text To Speech series maybe. It's maybe a little in-jokey but it's a pretty solid entry in the 40k fandom. You could also try the 40k Arma videos youtubers like Rimmy put up maybe I guess.

You were right about the soldier being new, on his helmet you can see a series of white lines, these are the mark of a Cadian who has just finished basic training, known as White Stripes. In the Anthology "Astra Militarum" there is a story about a battle line which was extremely critical to the crusade effort, and it was only being held by a contingent of White Stripes, lead by the indomitable Ursarker E. Creed.

So the lances the Kreig Deathriders carry is a shaped charge which is why they hurt the Astartes, they didn't do off on the humans but still killed them. The mounts are generically engineered to take dozens of hits and keep moving forward, they can ride longer and with less water and food. As for the Bangalore its a 3 foot section of Comp B with a booster to ignite the main charge. What the Kreig guy did was link a bunch of grenades together and ignite them all at once to get through the Astartes armor. Kreig is one of the few Regiments that doesn't run from Chaos Astartes or Demons. They have fear bread out of them as a culture for they believe in the cult of sacrifice for the God Emperor.

Contrary to what others say, the easiest way to tell apart Dark Angels and Salamanders at a glance is the colour of their pauldrons. Dark Angels have green pauldrons, Salamanders have black pauldrons.
The trim colour denotes which Company inside the Chapter it is.. according to the Codex Astartes, Silver trim is the First Company Veterans. Then there are the Battle companies, Gold is the 2nd, Red is 3rd, Green is 4th, Black 5th, Orange 6th.
The Purple 7th, Grey 8th and Light Blue 9th are either Reserve Companies or more specialised Support Companies, often containing more Heavy Fire Support/Devastator Marines. And the 10th and last officially allowed are the Dark Blue 10th, the Chapters Scout/Training Company. Alltogether, a Codex compliant Chapter has around 1000 combat troops at full strength, Scouts without the signature Space Marine Power Armor included and ONLY counting the actual Marines and Aspirants, not the whole logistical tail like serfs, Spaceship crews and so on. As an actual real life Marine you probably know the phrase about the tooth to tail ratio. ;)
That's for Chapters which follow the Codex to the letter though. There are some that make adjustments like the Iron Hands and Raven Guard, some that only follow the Codex as it suites them like the Dark Angels... and then there are some Chapters like the Black Templars and Space Wolves who basically use the Codex as toilet paper. ^^
The Dark Angel Marines in this animation are definitely NOT 1st Company Veterans for example, because with the Dark Angels the 1st Company is called the "Deathwing". They are *completely* outfitted with Terminator Armor and their main colour is bone white. The Dark Angels 2nd Company is the Ravenwing specialised for fast strikes by being outfitted completely with Assault Bikes, or Jump Packs if the Terrain doesn't allow for bikes... their main colour is Black.
So you see there's a lot of room for misidentifications. ;)

The Astartes here are Dark Angels, which are green like the Salamanders, but you can generally tell them apart pretty easily because Salamanders tend to have much more fancy or individualistic gear and also light shit on fire wherever they are.

A bangalore is more of a tool to blow up obstacles like chainwire, what the guy who blew up the chaos marine had looked more like a "Geballte Ladung" as we call it in german. It's basically a bunch of stick handgrenades bound together to blow up armored targets.
Ah, and also, "Krieg" means war in german. Their whole style is from the trench battles of WW1, long coats, gasmasks, horses, massive artillery pieces and of course shovels.

Yeah, most regiments just don't get along with each other. Often coming just short of open hostility. But that's part of an imperial commander's job, is to figure out what regiments can stand the sight of each other enough to work together, utilize each regiments strength, cover their weaknesses, and all while hoping they don't culture clash enough that they start calling each other heretics.
All of that is just dealing with the guard, leaving alone specialty forces like space marine chapters which often do whatever they want, and the sisters of battle who you really don't want anywhere near any of your men lest they start screaming heretic and funeral pyres of your own men start going up.

3:03 If only. Dark Angel’s have three color schemes, and can be confused for different chapters pretty easily. The only distinguishing feature is the iconography and marks on the marine, which can be obvious and not so obvious. Greenwing and Salamanders are easy to mix up.

  • @NeoDragonCount
    @NeoDragonCount 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The soldiers in green flak armor and the tank crewman in focus at the start are Cadian Shock Troops; soldiers from the eponymous planet of Cadia whom are themselves among the best of the Imperial Guard as their planet is the first line of defense against the Eye of Terror: The Eye of Terror being a rift or tear in space that leads to the Immaterium, or the Warp, the extradimensional realm the Chaos Gods and demons dwell in, and both in and around it are planets home to the Traitor Legions of Chaos Space Marines.
The Space Marines are Dark Angels: Salamanders have a brighter green coloration with gold trim and their sigil is a profile of a skull of a Wyrm-hide; a dragon-like lizard from their home planet Nocturne. Dark Angels in turn have the sword and wings sigil, which reflects on them coming from a feudal planet (that was destroyed) and them having a very knight-like mindset.
The black and gold and spiky marines are Chaos Space Marines of the Black Legion. Originally the Legion under command of Horus Lupercal, the Primarch who instigated the eponymous Horus Heresy that pretty much left the Imperium in the stagnant state it is in the storyline so far. Currently under the control of Abaddon the Despoiler who is essentially Horus' successor by right of might. The red one in the bunker was a World Eater, another Legion belonging to the Primarch Angron (now a demon prince) who are loyal to Khorne, the Blood God. They essentially revel in close combat using brutal martial prowess and are implanted with the Butcher's Nails, a type of brain implant that makes them revel in violence and brutality.
Whereas the rather ragtag blokes are Chaos Cultists: Humans who've turned to worship the Chaos Gods. These were likely Chaos Undivided, meaning they didn't pay homage to a specific Chaos God, since usually venerating a specific god tends to come with certain aesthetics or outright physiological mutations.

The Death Korps of Krieg are aesthetically based on the WW1 German army. That grenade the last one used to take out the traitor marine is based on an improvised version of the classic "potato masher" grenade meant to be used against tanks.

    • @commanderbacara225
      @commanderbacara225 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They are aesthetically based on the WW1 French + bits from other WW1 nations more than the German Army alone. Everything in the uniform down to their Greatcoats and Puttee boots are French designs. The only thing that looks vaguely German is the Stahlhelm design incorporated to the Adrian Fin helm design of the French. The Gasmask design is inspired by WW1 British Gasmasks.
Krieg Officers and Death Riders are based on French Cuirassiers, down to their finned helmets, riding boots, tussels and Cuirass. The DKoK Assault Engineers and their body armour are based on the WW1 Italian Arditi Assault Infantry. DKoK Grenadiers use German Stormtrooper inspired trench armour from WW1.

I wouldn't say there's smack talk or anything, Kriegsmen are generally more like...feared but respected on the same time, I guess. And the fact they basically never take off their gas mask if avoidable just adds to the unnerving factor.
Their "suicidal" reputation can be a little overblown at times though. While they are eager to die as repentance for the sins of their planets people and prove they are people deserving to live in the galaxy still, they'd rather it be a meaningful death that benefits humanity and the Emperor at least somehow rather than just a pointless waste. If they are ordered to advance though then it can be another matter altogether, since obedience is drilled into them so hard that most of them don't even get a name. Just a letter and number designation, unless they manage to survive long enough and rack up some achievements to be worthy of an actual name.

Glad you are enjoying the universe. The guys in green are actually Dark Angels. Salamanders have a slightly lighter green. Given the low light it’s hard to tell the shades though. The give away is the iconography on their left pauldron. Salamanders have a dragon head and the winged sword is Dark Angels. The Chaos boiz looked like they had Iron Warrior or maybe Black Legion markings, I didn’t really see a clear shot. The guy in red is a member of the cult of Khorne, as signified by his right shoulder markings. As for legion markings his left shoulder carries the seal of chaos undivided. This means that he has forsworn loyalty to an individual legion to seek the favor of his patron. Incidentally both the Iron Warriors and Black Legion are generally speaking followers of Chaos Undivided, and individuals that chose to follow their own path but stay with the legion are not uncommon.

In 40k the recoil is pretty much the same. High caliber high recoil. The reason why Space Marines don't feel much recoil, is the power armor with their immense strength.
This video shows how willing to sacrifice themselves the Kriegs are. To save one space marine they willingly send 5 or 10 to stall and damage a chaos space marine. Probably killed it too.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but those animals that the Kriegsmen are riding aren't anything like an earthborn horse; they've been mutated by the Krieg environment and bred to the point where they can take about a half dozen Bolter rounds to the chest and not drop. Their organs can be pulped before a charge would be halted. So when a Death Rider of Krieg charges, you RUN, preferably in the opposite direction!
