I think it was a good idea. The trial by fire toughened Elway up and put a chip on his shoulder for the rest of his career to prove the detractors wrong. Especially Terry Bradshaw who called Elway a "spoiled, California boy" who "Won't win anything in Denver".

Bradshaw showed a coward's disposition when he criticized Elway. Not so much at first, because he didn't know anything about him. But later...he KNEW Denver didn't have any first class talent, aside from Elway and maybe their pair of big safeties(not sure when they arrived...they may not have been there for their first Super Bowl or so). When he attacked Elway on the day of the Super Bowl against San Francisco...that's as tiny as it gets. The 49ers had too big of an edge in talent, as well as scheme. Obviously, Elway couldn't come right out and say that. And Bradshaw KNEW that. But for Bradshaw, of all people, to attack him...Bradshaw had the cushiest job in NFL history. When he got his first two rings, their defense was so good that he could win most of his games doing virtually NOTHING. Later, he was a big part of their attack, sure....but even then, he was surrounded by first class teammates...Swann, Stalworth, Harris, Bleir, Webster...and their defense was still very good, though not as dominant as it had been....Bradshaw won rings on a team that any solid qb could have won rings with...he was in no position to criticize ANYONE...little, mean-spirited man..

This should be no reflection on the Steelers of the 70s. The Steelers dominated the line of scrimmage on the defensive side and had the number one offense two of the four super bowls they won. Joe green, l c Greenwood, jack Lambert and crew simply stopped the rush, passing attacks, and blitzed every other down. Total domination on both sides of the ball. Jack Lambert was the only linebacker i ever saw stop earl Campbell in his own tracks and push him backwards.
