    It’s always nice to see the girls show up in a video. It just makes me smile to see them. Learning to run the cameras is a good idea. My sister has a Subaru.Tell Hannah to get the timing belt changed when it supposed to be done or some engines can be seriously damaged if it breaks. Have a great day and the driveway turned out very nice.

      A pool is a hard thing to justify. Expensive to install , purchase , keep it maintained , etc. We have thought about it around here for over a decade and to be honest it wouldnt get used more than a dozen times a year. The same reason I dont have a pontoon boat.

    I grew up on a horse farm, until I joined the Navy. Since then I have always lived in cities (except when deployed).
    I really enjoy watching you and the family work in the great outdoors.
    I often think, that tractor is great, look at all the things you can do with it. I've got to get me one of those. Then I come back down to earth and realize I don't "need" one.
    Still, watching your videos allows me to live vicariously for a few minutes each day. Thanks!

    Couldn't agree more about spreading stone by pushing backwards with the land plane. I have to do it all the time maintaining our steep road that gets the "rumble strips" in it. That said, I'm custom making a 6' land plane that is attached to a quick attach plate and mounts to the loader so I can do the same thing while driving forward. I almost have it finished, except for finding a used land plane, a quick attach plate, and the time to modify all of it and weld it up....lol.

      I have four sections of 8'x8' pallet racking with a simple metal shed roof that I store my firewood on. Each one holds 1.75 cords. Thinking of getting several sections of 12' pallet rack, putting them back to back with a gable roof over the top and two tiers for storing implements on pallets.

    Kudos on the crown, keeping it high will solve a lot of the problems with the side of the road washouts and it does not hurt of there is a little dirt in it, I've found. Up in UpState NY, we found that shale was even better for building driveways and back roads. It packed down like concrete and would not wash away like gravel (fine stone as you call it).

    The land plane sure does a nice job. I've seen you work on your driveway numerous times now and it seems like its just not routed well for the water. I think you either need to build up the stone several inches higher so you can effectively divert water to the sides, or you need to reroute the driveway so it doesn't follow the fall line

    One nice feature on these Land Pride land plane is that the blades height is adjustable on each side. To crown a road, you can set one side lower than the other and let the blades do the work for you instead of trying to incline the whole tractor.

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea you can definitely adjust them, I just like to keep the land plane level and do it the way I did because it's faster and easier for me. Also if you were wanting to pull some stone back up a driveway you would have to keep adjusting, or make sure sure your passes are in different directions for each side of driveway

    • @davidmorse8432
      @davidmorse8432 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember a time before box blades when we used a straight blade behind a tractor. You could angle it and drop one edge to shape a crown. More like a road grader. After that, take the land plane and work each side to take out ripples made by the straight blade.

    • @johnsadler8637
      @johnsadler8637 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All we ever have had is a straight blade. If the drive is too flat, we drop the right lift lever with the crank and pull some back to the middle. I turn the blade around to smooth. I’m not sure I could accurately back up the 300 yards of relatively flat drive up on top and I’m not ever going to back down the hill. That’s a recipe for a serious accident as steep as it is. I might experiment with turning the blade around and knocking out some of the rolling humps - those tend to build when the front goes over the top so the blade jumps up and then gouges. Good idea.

  • @profdave2861
    @profdave2861 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting you say that just over 3 tons is about all you’d want to pull with the “grocery getter”. I have that same F150 crewcab truck except with the 5 liter V8 and I’m pulling 5+ tons quite regularly. (No question the 3.5L Ecoboost in your truck is even better for pulling).
    The key factor in allowing me to safely tow more weight is a load equalizing trailer hitch. Although inflatable shocks or air bags in the rear axle will help stop sag, it doesn’t transfer any of the load to the front axle. An equalizing hitch, properly sized and set up for your tow vehicle and trailer, can shift a substantial portion of the load to the front axle, allowing you to pull much higher loads safely and comfortably. It takes a few more minutes to hook up but it’s well worth the time!

    • @davidmorse8432
      @davidmorse8432 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure you can pull more weight but can you stop it too? That's where so many people get in trouble pulling trailers with pickups. General rule of thumb is never haul more weight than the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer carrying it. Come up behind a stopped vehicle and try to stop, that weight will push you right into a rear end collision. Electric brakes just don't cut it when stopping a heavy loaded trailer. Those surge brakes, (hitch activated) work pretty good but nothing stops a load like air brakes.

    Since at the end you like backing up to spread to reduce the washboarding effect, would a box blade be better for the application of crowning? The crown in my driveway is a bit high, from rut base to crown center about 3 inches above my ankle! So needs to be shortened. ( last improved in 1989!!). Gotta get tractor first😃👍

      We call it soil cement in East Texas, and is simply mixing in portland cement with the subgrade material. This is done by placing the cement on top of the subgrade with a bulk cement tractor trailer rig with special dispensing tubes. The amount used is dependent on many factors to numerous to mention here. After the cement is placed a machine that looks like a giant troy-built tiller, and is called a stabilizer, mixes the cement and a layer of subgrade together while adding water to control dust and begin hydration of the cement. This is followed by graders and compactors which develop the final grade. This must all take place before the cement cures. That's why they always seem to be in a hurry.

    A cutting edge will help to preserve the land plane. Without it and if you do enough grading it will wear it out and then you will have to have it cut out and replaced. Once it is worn it is to late to add a cutting edge.

    Hey Mike, You do realize when you use the land plane backwards you are using it rock against normal probably A36 steal, not the Abrasion resistant steal it has on the cutting blades forward? It works yes, but the steal won't last over the years that way, blades are made to bolt on replace, that support steal will probably have to be cut out and new welded in.

    very timely video for me. I'm on the fence on purchasing a land plane or box blade for my 1000' fairly level gravel drive.
    10-12' wide. Sub Compact green machine and JD doesn't make a land plane for it with scarifiers. The search is on.

    You should try using road millings on your driveway sometime. Good compaction.

    Hannah looked like she had had a tough day. She also looked like she was discussed about having to replace the headlight again. At the end of the video, she seemed to be perking up while trying to play fetch with the dogs. Though, it did look like more of a game of I will throw it, then come and get it from you, and then go back and throw it again. My dog used to play that game when she thought I needed more exercise.
