Nice video; would be great to see a video on the R20 about the guitar models and Guitar Lab. As the R20 does not use the same presets as the other Zoom guitar products you cannot swap the presets, it would be nice to learn more about the Guitar lab stuff and where to find more presets and how to make new ones in details. Thanks
I did make an R20 video using Guitar Lab. I didn't go through guitar amp/cab modeling specifically, but they offer a variety of options. It's not bad. They also mimic BOSS pedals and effects that sounds pretty good. I plug in my guitar directly into input 1 all the time and use the modeling effects and it works for me. If you have a Line 6 pedal or something, your guitar will sound better than only using the R20 effect patches. But for an all-in-one device, the R20 isn't bad. @@GazRendar Thanks; looks great! Lots of interesting info in there. Do you know if there is a place where to get more effects or Zoom is the only place where you get these? I looked on their website and seems that they have no packs or expansions for the R20 (and the presets used for the other Zoom pedals and effects that still use Guitar Lab do not work on the R20 as the format is totally different). I know that it would not hold a candle to a dedicated guitar amp/pedal, but as generic multi effect it is more than enough for me, as I use mostly NI Guitar Rig Pro for anything more complex.
Officially, you can only use Guitar Lab to load and edit more effects on the R20. Guitar Lab is used by a variety of Zoom products, but the patch file format is different for different groups of Zoom devices. However, there is a subreddit "zoommultistomp" where some users there have rewritten code for Guitar Lab patches for one device to work on an entirely different, unintended device. It sounds like you can get a more expansive range of effects if you are crafty and comfortable rewriting code for your R20. I looked into it, and it just wasn't worth it to me to potentially brick my R20.
@@GazRendar Thanks for the info; so this is a limitation that was set specifically for the R20. I will check that group but if it involves changing firmware and such, I don't see much value at that point... I can just live with the effects I got via the standard presets and play with these
Love this little recorder, but I agree with others I wish there was a way to loop a section and overdub takes on it. My biggest wish is that it had MIDI Sync for my drum machine, but I know that’s not happening
Definitely no MIDI sync happening. But it does seem feasible that they could build in a A to B loop feature with the markers in a firmware update. I just don't know if that will ever happen...
Hi Gaz, hope ur having a great day. I was just wondering how the durability is of the unit and if can withstand hours on end of use. Is it a reliable unit. Does it it need to be replaced after using this unit regularly like everyday. Thanks in advance!
Hi Gaz, can this unit keep up for the long haul or does it need to replacement after using this extended long use like months or years of everyday writing.. I’ve had my mine for about 6 months and use it just about everyday. Still going 💪 Ty!
I've been using mine for 3 years running now. I don't use it every day, and there are even weeks where I don't use it. But when I use it, I use it alot for a stretch and then walk away to come back to a project later. I think it's fairly durable. I'm guessing the touchscreen would be the first thing to fail, just because it's multitouch and compared to the faders and buttons, that's probably the weak point of the unit. Still, if you take care of it I think it'll last years and years.
Bluetooth is functionality only works through the BTA-1 adapter for the iPad app. It's fine, but it mostly mimics the fader view screen. I thought Zoom might create an iPad app that allowed you to do all the touch screen track editing, but I don't think that's coming. It's likely that it isn't possible with the hardware and software. I could be wrong, but I don't see Zoom doing anything else with the BTA-1 adapter. If you were referring to using the BTA-1 adapter to pair to bluetooth headphones as a possible future firmware update, that's not going to work. There is always a small lag whenever you use Bluetooth headphones that makes it too hard to manage recordings. Even if you do it on an iPad or iPhone with a DAW, the lag is too difficult to deal with. If you haven't seen it, here is my video about the iPad bluetooth app for the R20: th-cam.com/video/F9LIYZpOvuA/w-d-xo.html
Hi Gaz, your videos are great for walking through all of the features this unit is capable of. I have had mine for about a year and really enjoy this unit. My question is, how is the durability of the product, another words, would this unit hold up with daily use for a long time before replacing it with another one? Thanks in advance. -Greg
Random question because I've been researching these units - I know you can drag the end of an audio event to make it repeat, but is there any way to set up a loop region for all of the tracks, so you can continuously loop one section?
As of v3.4, sadly, no. In order to do that you have to manually drag out each track that you want to "loop" over and over. As an example...if you have drums on a track, rhythm guitar on a track, and bass on a track, you'll need to touch and drag to extend out all three of those tracks separately so you can mess around and figure out a solo guitar to go over all of it. So you can do it, it mostly works, and that's exactly how I handle it now, but it's annoying. Creating a marker loop, along with auto-defined punch in/out points, seems like something Zoom could incorporate with a firmware update by adding more features into the marker menu. It just hasn't happened.
Happy to help. If you are shopping for an R12 or R20, I think the one main take away is - are you going to use the touchscreen to edit your songs directly on the device? If the answer is yes, then the R12 or R20 are really good for your needs. If you plan on editing everything on a computer, then you might want to look elsewhere. As an example, I will record a bass track, a drum track, and a rhythm guitar track for the chorus of a song one time. Then I can easily use the touch screen to copy the chorus regions on those three tracks, and paste them for the second time the chorus shows up in the song. And the third time. It works better than any other multitracker to do all that on the device itself. Now, once you build up tracks and regions it can get a little slow, but with a little patience, you can accomplish a lot on the device for the price. But if you just need to record sections and tracks, and plan on assembling in a DAW instead, and you don't really need built-in effects, you might want to look into a Handy recorder a hybrid mixer like an L-8 or Model 12.
Incomprensible error de zoom no incorporar auto punch in out. Sin ese recurso es muy difícil hacer grabaciones para un instrumentista. Compra totalmente desaconsejable si es tu caso. La pequeña boss br80 te lo pone mucho más fácil.
Great Review as always, greetings from brasil!
Thank you!
Great video thanks! It's sad that there isn't much happening regarding development in the software indeed.
Thanks. And yeah, I feel like just a couple more software tweaks could really improve the usability of the device.
YEP, 😂ONCE I FIGURED THAT OUT I GOT RID OF MINE AND GOT A MODEL 12.
Hi! I solved (autopunch IN!! ) in such a way that, with the precount turned on, it goes back 4 measures in the song and gives a playback from there

I bought the R20, do I have to update all the firmware releases or will the latest update all the changes in the past
You can just go straight to v3.4 in a single update.

It is amazing how seemingly ahead of the curve boss was with both that and the discontinued BR800.
