- In this video, I'm using the ZOOM R20 to record multiple stereo audio tracks simultaneously on AKAI MPC One while also controlling synthesizer parameters with it's faders and knobs. Table of contents:

Lovely, especially the track! I've been wanting an R20 ever since I saw yours, even though I can't convince myself I actually need it ;) (I have all the functionality in separate boxes which I'm not using much).

Well, you don't really need an R20 if you already have an audio interface and midi controllers.
That being said, it's a great centerpiece for a home recording setup. I use it extensively for all my TH-cam "stuff".

Thanks for watching! It's a feature Zoom had in the previous models as well. The implementation in the R20 is the easiest to use imo.
Nice, I was going to get a mixer/audio interface to work with my MPC One but it looks like there is some new developments happening with the 1010music bluebox desktop and eurorack version. If the eurorack version gets multitrack out of the usb-c I might purchase that and sell my desktop version (which probably will never have more than stereo connectivity)
... which is a shame - the 1010 music boxes all are great in their own way but once you have them you have a ton of ideas how they could be even better ;-)
Great video! Floyd can I ask what update you are on, on the mpc please. My mpc live 1 when updated past 10.1 seems to have broken midi mapping over usb but not midi? I know its not the machine as I have two identical ones.

I've checked now: my MPC is on the latest firmware, 2.12.1, controller 0.10, and both USB and 5-pin MIDI controllers work as expected and the same way.

One of the interesting features of the R20 is the on-board effects. Are these still available when in interface mode - ie as 'insert' to input or output channels?
I'm afraid they are not, and Guitar Lab mode isn't supported on MPC.
Would this work with other usb-enabled mixers or is it specific to the zoom to be able to control a midi parameter via a slider ?

Thanks! As long as the mixer you're using acts both as an audio interface and a class-compliant MIDI controller, you should be good.
For some reason when i connected mine, it wouldn't allow master volume to be adjusted. When i connected a model 12 mixer, same problem but it had submix out so that was my alternate route.
Unfortunately, not all the knobs and sliders send MIDI data.
Can the MPC One be used with one of its USB ports for an audio interface and connect a MIDI controller to another port? Or does it have to be one or the other if I don’t own an R20?
You can do that. MPC One has two USB ports, and you should also be able to connect a hub to add more USB devices.
Very nice , unless you need to spend so many time on manual and on programmation that at the end of the day, you don't play music anymore :) Sometimes simpler is better !

Does the zoom R16 also work as audio interface with the MPC ?
Hi! I can't say with certainty as I never owned one. But _if_ the R16 is a class-compliant USB audio interface (read: will work without installing a specific driver), then it will also work with the MPC One.

Short version: R24 has more tracks and more features overall
R20 has a nice touch screen and better sound quality (on my opinion, some viewers disagreed)
I found that plain, unprocessed recordings of my gear on the R20 sounded better than recordings with all mastering effects applied to them on the R24.
But as I said, some people questioned my findings. Please read the comments on that video. ;-)
I like it but it's a bit of a process to set up. You can do exactly what you were doing on the R20 faders by simply customizing your MPC Q-link knobs to control what you want.
Thanks for watching! Sure, that's one way to do it. The assignment of the external midi controller stays consistent regardless of where you are and what you're doing, though, so the 4 encoders are freed up to do their usual business.

Midi learn is so badly done on the akai's, should just hold a button on tubesynths cutoff and move a knob/slider
Right! This menu system is too far away from the parts of the software it affects. It's bad design.
Yep, it's a pain. I use a Korg nanoKontrol 2 and it's fiddly - especially when including effects controls.
Mine constantly froze with external controllers. Repeatedly. Unreliable.
