The recognition was _greatly_ vindicating after all this time, I joined the discord specifically as another outlet to make these requests since my timezone means I always miss the TH-cam premieres lol
Thanks for the delightful video! But, with that being said...
**Week 128 of asking for Platinum With Only Drifloon**
I will never give up
Had to search for the comment straight away XD Great dedication if nothing else.
@@SoaringE4GLEsame lmao
Your dedication is admirable , a lesson in never giving up!
This has to be such a tease lol
This comment deserves to be pinned.
Funny you didn't care about ability since aftermath is useless on a solo run. Unburden+acrobatics is such a good strategy.
“Neither ability is useful”
If this wasn’t gen 5, I’d almost agree with that. But unburden when you have access to gems? You’re a mad man sir.
Yeah, even more so with the FLYING gem, Acrobatics + STAB = 165 base power if you are not holding an item. Acrobatics + STAB + Flying gem = 248 BASE POWER, THAT'S 2 POWER LOWER THAN EXPLOSION, sure you only get that off once per fight, but it will delete practically EVERYTHING short of a Sturdy target. And if you then have Unburden, THAT activates too for double base speed. Not staged speed, BASE.
And yes, this works. The gem is consumed before the base power check on Acrobatics. It's one of the main reasons Gems hasn't returned. Because Acrobatics + Flying gem was THAT broken.
Aren't the gems single use... how in gods name does that make it useful lol
Look. Plus speed doesn't do much in these types of runs bc it's ai not competitive
@@Qwertyness-oh3ov going first always helps, even against AI.
Especially if you're at a disadvantage.
@@bleach-kun was he ever outsped that run lol
6:35 Ah yes my favorite dark type move, Ominous Wind. Don’t confuse it with the ghost type cause it is most definitely not one of those
I think that might be why he never got an omni boost. Dark type ominous wind doesn't have one
love the Shadow Ball for TM at 14:30
😂😂😂
Yeah, I noticed it too lol
rewinded it once to see if i heard that right XD
So I wasn't going crazy
he also called Krokorok "Krookodile" lmao
Maybe you can use items like eviolite after a certain amount of attempts or if you are level 100 and are not bulky enough
Seriously. After he hit level 100 and was just grinding for Ominous Wind stat boosts over and over, that should have been the indicator to use the Eviolite.
Fun fact, Unburden, Acrobatics and a Flying Gem (which is consumed upon using Acrobatics, not just buffing it for the gem but also the move buff) was a killer strat in Gen 5 competetive, regardless of tier.
Gems are banned now bar normal gem I think which sucks because now i cant use my usual belly drum thick fat snorlax with normal gem self destruct
@@gamingpolice589you're evil!!!
@@gamingpolice589they are not even in game anymore. It's part of the reason home doesn't allow item transfer, too. It's so funny how powerful weaker, proto z moves are.
@@VCV95I don’t know how true this is but I heard that z moves in gen 7 made players go back to gen 5 and discover just how broken gems were lol
Yeah, though In Game they're consumed after a single use. Like for good.
Has anybody noticed there hasn't been a easter egg in the "I'm writing this script as I go thorugh with the challenge" in quite a while?
me too, man
14:30 "Either way, I picked up the Shadow Ball for TM" gods, idk why but I love silly lil mistakes like that? Guess bc they serve as a reminder that despite nigh-divine levels of patience, you're as human as the rest of us. Either way, good run so far!
As a small time saver, lots of people in the Pokemon community call an "all stat boost"/"stats boost" an omni-boost (omni as a prefix means all). You can of course call them whatever you want but it is a bit less of a mouthful full in my opinion to say omni-boost, plus it sounds cool.
I think Eviolite is fine, especially for things like the ground gym where you straight up had no other answers for it other than grinding and had to go from 50 to 52 to finish it, that likely could have been not needed with Eviolite since the attempt at level 50 looked it would have came down to you getting an extra critical hit in.
Also another way to think of it: it might make the fight(s) you're CURRENTLY struggling with easier but you'd also not end up as over leveled making the game a lot more fair since you wouldn't need to be 10+ levels over that one thing you're struggling with (ideally speaking anyways)
Strongly agree here. If you are needing to grind it is worth trying.
I probably wouldn’t leave it on all the time so the easier fights are super easy but it should be a tool in your pocket.
I'd say use Eviolite. It increases defenses, so you'll just be able to last longer, not one shot everything. It'll lead to more interesting battles.
Is there a reason you don't fight Alder when you do B/W runs? You usually attempt Red and Steven, but I can't remember a time when you tried Alder after beating Ghetsis.
My best guess would be that, instead of just fighting one new trainer, you have to fight a gauntlet you've already gone through to get back to Alder. Admittedly, the elite 4 is buffed up the second time around, but it's the same group of trainers essentially right after you've *just* fought them (since there's really no major hurdles between beating the game and being able to challenge the elite 4 again) and it wouldn't make for very good content.
That, or Ghetsis in the main story is already taking up the slot of post-champion battle boss fight, or the exp formula in gen5 onwards makes grinding up for that take to long, or something.
I would also assume it's bc it would almost always be impossible, they're hard even with a proper team, and a crappy mon by themselves would like. Never have any chsnce
@@coreDesignixit's not because of exp. He's already asked everyone if he can use rare candies post game and people said yes
@@GelatinCoffee fair lol I can never keep track of which challenge runners are using exp candies and which aren’t
@@coreDesignix It's more that Alder is... a joke. The dude isn't really hard at all since he uses bug types. Sure, bugs are better in Gen 5, but they were still a pretty weak type overall.
MDB: thinks that sp attack boosting nature would have been good
Also MDB: our attack is down from intimidate and it's affecting the damage i do with gust
I bet it was for the TH-cam algorithm 🤔
Missing Ominous Wind stat boost 60 times in a row was a 0.9^60=0.18% chance. So not unheard of odds, but a pretty crazy way to end the run haha
I can't believe he chose my name suggestion for Drifloon made it in the video.
12:36 I think people say Return is op not just because it's powerful but because every pokemon can learn it. It kind of makes it cheap when you can just slap it on every weak pokemon.
"Full-stats boost" That felt so wrong every time you said it. It's kinda odd that you've managed to avoid hearing the term omniboost considering how prevalent it is in the pokemon community and how much pokemon content you put out.
definitely think you should use eviolite in some of your BW runs. gen 5 is so brutal for solo runs anyway, it's worth it to have an "extra bulk" button in your back pocket so you don't have to grind so often.
great video as usual! been a fan since the first pokemon challenge and it's nice to see your growth as a player and as a content creator.
Flying Gem + Acrobatics is cracked as hell. B/c the items gets used up BEFORE Acrobatics resolves, so you get the boost from the gem, THEN the full powered Acrobatic b/c you're not holding anything. Not to mention the boost from STAB on top of all that. So farming a few Flying Gems at the very least can't hurt.
14:29 man i didn't know they had a shadow ball for tm in this game, thats gonna help the run a lot
Unburden can actually be pretty good gen 5! Acrobatics+flying gem for instance is kind of an insane combo since it give you an insanely powerful 55x2x1.5 for a massive 165 base power before STAB, and doubles your speed until you switch out it's nuts. It's really good if you need to open with one big punch and the rest of the team can be easily swept.
It's not just your fun pokemon challenges, but it's also your love for wrestling on why I keep watching
The Clay fight would have been a good time to use the Eviolite, that way you could have beaten it at a lower level so the rest of the game isn't easy as you are not that overleveled.
If it means less grinding, go for the eviolite. This game is already punishing enough with the anti-grinding measures they take.
Was there a fossil choice at all? For historical purposes, please, thank you.
Just one time, I want him to take the DOME fossil.
6:37 *Ghost, if you're still doing corrections on things spotted in the pre-release version
Have you thought about a return only run? Kangaskhan gets scrappy so ghosts aren’t a worry!
love your videos. I have been watching since your first Pokemon challenge
Great video as always.
The highlight of my week.
This was your best solo pokemon run in a long time holy crap. I love it when you have to really push you and your pokemon to the limits in order to win! Super exciting run.
25:35 "I still don't have the autofire buttons working for Platinum yet"
It's a long shot, but have you tried locking the framerate to 30? That's the set framerate for Gen 4 on the original DS hardware. Maybe that'll help with the autofire buttons?
Wait ... unburden is trash too ?? Not the "when the item is used, your speed doubles" unburden plus you had acrobatics.... easy combo
AND the flying gem, which consumes itself BEFORE acrobatics does the item check, meaning you get the unburden boost and base power doubling
@ScourgeTheGreat facts bro ... I need him to play a lil more competitively so he can understand some of his runs can be so easy and stream line
HOLY SHIT THE MADMAN DID MY REQUEST FROM AGES AGO! What in the world?! The best thing to tune into to de-stress. I’m so happy :”””) ❤❤❤ Thank you MDB!
Edit: I know I’m not the only one who asked, but I know I specifically asked for BW or B2W2. I am not the person who was that dedicated! BUT FELLOW DRIFLOON LOVER IN ARMS
A fellow lover of the lord of balloons. Happy times indeed.
Glad to get home and watch a new challenge
What a fun time. As for the upcoming shuckle run, that'll be a slog but I'm sure you'll get through. Thanks for another great video!
Loved the video. I think you should try using the eviolite when your only other option is just leveling up, since it will allow you to not over level and trivialize later fights
Ghetsis must've been having a really bad day when you did this run. I didn't think he would be THAT hard at the end. Good luck on that Shuckle run!
Really loved the part where Meowth came in and pep talked you in the corner for the Gehtsis fight. Great stuff as always MDB
You actually showed us how Red and Fire Red were different. I remember way back when you did the Red Diglet run, some other run, the the Fire Red Diglet run!
That wad easily... what... 2.5 years ago MINIMUM.
Flying Gem Unburden Acrobatics would've gone crazy though! Love the challenge videos regardless MDB!
You're really cool!! Hope you you're doing better soon and know that all your fans love you!!!
Also please play Pokemon Platinum with only Plusle and Minen
Okay ... that's dedication XD
I'm still holding out for an eventual Qwilfish run :D
I always love runs that aren’t the first or second gen games. Plus gen 5 is my favorite gen so I’m always excited for gen 5 runs
i love your videos week 1 (wil prob forget this next week already but who knows i wil try
Damn, that was a brutal run, its not every time that we have to hit max level but was a great run overall!
Now that was an interesting and exciting run!
I think Evolite (not sure on the spelling there, sorry) is fine in the same way Leftovers/a Shell Bell is fine: going without is preferable if it's not needed, but it's fine to use if the run would be over/to prevent excessively punishing grinding/RNG-fishing. It's a part of the game, after all. You should probably mention when you're using it, though, just for transparency's sake.
Drifloon is one of my favourites, love the little guy
The grinding is real this run
I did notice the more frequent generation and challenge type switch ups, and I like it! Keeps things fresh, both to watch and probably for you to play. ^_^b
I think it was maybe a year or so ago that I came up with a new planning system to help keep the generations fresher. Recently I've been coming up with a system to help give a better variety of solo and team runs too. I'm happy that people are into it!
I love Balloon Boy getting some love, I dig both the solo runs and team runs since it allows you to mess around with movesets and mons you rarely use
I enjoy the variety of games. I also like seeing runs of the same pokemon in red then in firered to see the difference in difficulty. I can imagine trying to balance all the games getting screen time is difficult but I would be interested to see you do some gen 6-9 runs too.
That was a fun run, thank you. Driftwoons sprite looks funny.
I like the switching between team- and solo-runs a lot. Btw: can you beat Pokemon X/Y with one Noibat?
0:58 tbf I've been asking for you to do Emerald w/Relicanth for a while too lol. You know, so you can prove to me that you Reli-can-th do it! 😅
I think you could use eveolite as you do with rare candies: last resort to speed up grinding. Nice run as always!
The second best Dustin Rhodes persona.
Behind Black Reign.
Upload 4 days ago… must of been a decently quick edit. Well done sir 😊
When did he say anything about edit?
@darkness5019 shut up
@@darkness5019sorry only mah dry bread twitter followers will understand.
Be sure to give him a follow and maybe next week you’ll get it. :)
Love the video champ 🏆
Week 1 of asking for a Sunkern-only run in Ruby - good luck! 😁
Your ending thoughts made me think, it would be interesting/fun to see you do a OG/Remake run. It would obviously take a lot more time, but seeing you do a run on Red and FireRed with the same challenge to really show just how different they are would be really neat I think!
Another fire video from mah drybread (damn this is legit the first time i commented on his channel)
1:18 At least he's getting that Drifloon run he wanted... just not the way he wanted.
Yooooooooo the shuckster returns. Also Emerald with one numel. I may not be as consitent but I will still ask
rarely I'm this early, hope you had a good week!
Looking forward to next week. Really wanna see if he can beat the elite 4. They have several pokemon immune to toxic, so i dont see how he could.
Oh, a drifloon run? talk about a neat idea, wonder how Grimmsley will go. I predict closer to Level 100 for this run. Good luck!
Very good video !
An idea for a challenge doing pokemon firered with only a Mismagius.
What was that final fight... Your stat boost/crit luck was something else.
The most broken move in black is acrobatics paired with a flying gem. The flying gem boost activates, and the game gives you the full power of acrobatics because you're no longer holding an item. Its really good for destroying single pokemon.
Ha. Love the WCW reference for Drifloon
This video taught me that the Acrobatics boost will work if you just don’t equip an item.
All this time I thought the item had to be consumed mid-battle. Turns out it’s just mildly more efficient.
Man, I love driftloon...
I didn't even notice you nicknamed Drifloon, but now all I can hear in my head is "Sesevenen." 😆
I can't believe you did Dustin like that with the name 😂
14:29 "i picked up the shadowball for TM" - Mah-Dry-Bread
It is always fun to watch these because of the gaps of knowledge sometimes, but it does slow them quite a lot also. Calling Unburden a useless ability while having a flying type and acrobatics is astonishing. Prestatusing and holding a curing berry will let you outspeed almost anything. Also at the ghost type E4 just hold a rawst berry if you know you always get the turn 1 burn. I think this is were these challenges can get even more interesting if these small things would be applied. Now they usually turn into overlevelling or crit luck.
Hey my favourite pokemon! Excited to see how this goes
Boy I sure do love getting the Shadowball for TM😂❤
Dang a Seven reference. Even more obscure than Black Reign! MYAH MYAH MYAH
Flying gem, STAB, unburdened, acrobatics is even better
Huzzah for Driftee, saving the region all on their own, goddesses I love this Pokemon
Acrobatics is so good it allows speedrunners to use Flamigo in Scarlet/Violet.
Finally paid off! I get to watch early coz I followed you on Twitter..
So what your saying is if I want a heracross run I need to rewatch ever challenge and ask on every one? It's gonna be a long week but I'll do it
Back to where this started 178 videos and 178 request in ONE week that's gotta count for something right? We'll can you do a heracross only run?
Now off to check twitter to see if the next video is up yet....I wonder how many more before I get my request....
Pausing really early after the mention of Patrat or however it's pronounced. I think it would be funny to do a run with one of those named Ratatta.
Very interesting one to say the least. Not sure you added but please do this to the Pokemon challenges playlist ^.^
Maybe you can try the Cynthia superboss in Undella Town after the League for your next Black and White run one day, it can be fun. ^^
I don't know how many videos/days it's been me suggesting it, like you mentioned at the start of the video of people tracking their asks...but, uh...would love an Emerald game as Wally
I love how he accidentally called Krokorok,, Krookodile xD awesome
Well, that ended up being surprisingly brutal. Thanks for sharing that run with us.
But for future runs, I'd be completely okay with you using the Eviolite, on the grounds that 1. it's something the game provides you, so it's not like it counts as cheating, and 2. considering how weak most of the Pokemon you use are, and how rough Black and White are for solo runs, I don't think it would make things too easy.
Back to Shuckle, eh? Oh goodie.
Well, Shuckle has a good movepool this time around, and you get Return right away, so maybe it won't be quite so bad this time around? Hopefully?
The other awesome part about remakes is you can use Pokemon that weren’t in the original. Such as Stunky in HeartGold (that’s my idea of the week).
I do also think Eviolite is fair game in Black. It’s not a free win button but can still give you the edge in close battles, plus it eats up your item slot and keeps Acrobatics from being 110 BP.
May be an odd request, but I'd love to see a heartgold run with technician scyther.
Got him late in my most recent run-through and wanted to see how well he'd do from the start
Or just a Technician-focused run in general, having to use Pokemon with the ability and only moves boosted by it.
There's still some room for challenge (some Pokemon who get it aren't especially strong, plus relying on Technician means you'll never have a move with more than 90 power), but it would be a lot of fun.
i think eviolite is a valid strat in gen 5 solo runs. many other challenge runners I've watched have discovered that despite how good it is Eviolite is not always the correct play.
Ominous Wind indeed, there at the end. Poor fragile kidnapping balloon
I like that you do Pokémon Red runs. Those first games are very charming and nostalgic to me, and so many people on watch play modded Scarlet and Violet. It's cool, but it's no Pokémon Red.
As a suggestion for a team run would love to see all steel types in any gen. For solo id really like to see Aron in gen 3 or HG/SS
It'd be cool to see a side by side comparison, one with the 50% buff item and one without
2:00 I'm pretty sure that's in Dustin Rhodes' memory as a bad time. Then again, WCW was starting to get in a rut by that point.
14:30 “I picked up the Shadow Ball for TM”
Not to be that guy, but Return is technically still more powerful than Acrobatics.
Acrobatics, due to its restrictions against held items, can only reach up to 165 Power (55 [Base power] x2 [for no held item] x1.5 [STAB]) naturally... with an exception that I'll get to in a moment.
Return, meanwhile, is 102 base power, so STAB can only take it to 153 Power, but a Silk Scarf (1.2x boost) takes it up to 183.6 (which probably rounds-up, but I'm not sure what the game actually does with decimals) and a Life Orb (1.3x boost) takes it to a whopping 198.9 Power.
Providing I'm doing my math right.
Now.
There's two caveats.
The first, and most obvious, is that Acrobatics can actually be super-effective on targets, and only has one more type that resists it (Electric). Which is an obvious booster to utility.
The second, and perhaps more absurd, is that... apparently (according to Bulbapedia) Flying Gems are used *_before_* Acrobatics checks for a held item. Which means STAB Acrobatics can get a frankly absurd 1-time boost from a Flying Gem (1.5x power) to give it an unbelievable 247.5 (again I don't know how the game handles rounding) Power. That's more than STAB Hyper Beam (225)! By contrast, Return can only crank-out a maximum of 229.5 Power with a Normal Gem. Once again, these are single-use items, so, Return users may still favor a more enduring Held Item to a single-use one-but Acrobatics users will have no such reservations... as long as you can acquire enough Gems.
I suppose I should also mention that, assuming non-STAB typing use cases, Acrobatics actually does win-out in a lot of cases, since a non-STAB Return user is less likely to be using a Held Item to maximize its power, anyways. However, Acrobatics is also a lot harder to come by outside of Flying Types... at least compared to Return, which can be learned by almost anything; Acrobatics is, by no means, an uncommon move.
There's no real point to this; Acrobatics is a truly beastly move, and is probably more *_valuable_* than Return, for its type-coverage... but, in terms of (sustained) raw hitting power, Return does technically have a potential to be stronger. I have been careful not to use the word "better" thus far, as I largely view these two moves as being on equal footing-though, given the choice, I'm sure I'd probably pick Acrobatics.
"We picked up the Shadow Ball for TM" XD
