I used to be best friends with a girl in hs who faked having cancer. I had random people running up to me telling me that she has lung cancer or brain cancer. She was telling people she was on oxygen at home and heavy breathing treatments. I looked at them so confused like, "what??? I was just at her place last night, and she didn't have any of this, thats funny." I spent almost everyday with her. She knew that my cousin had died as a kid from brain cancer. She knew my great grandpa had died a year prior from throat cancer, and that was the 3rd time of him having it. And my aunt at the time had breast cancer, along with my uncle having throat cancer. I dropped her IMMEDIATELY. I don't play with that.

When I was 13 I lied about having cancer to a few people obviously to get attention, of course it came out I don’t, Very embarrassing. I went to therapy and learnt the psychological reasoning why I lied was simply because I wanted love and attention, and thought I needed to go drastic measures to make people care because I felt unlovable. It’s very crazy thing your brain does , and I’m glad I got help… I was too embarrassed to admit it for years but now I’m older I know it’s okay as long as you take responsibility for your actions , face them, change ,become a better person. Also taught me to be genuine and il get the right love and attention in my life I’m supposed to have. If your going through similar, just go talk to someone, it really does help ❤

My mother did the same. All my childhood she lied she has a breast cancer and under the treatment. When I was a kid I was so sad and worried about her. Now I’m 22 and I know she’s pathological liar and said her friends I’m sick too. She’s evil woman and till this day she denies everything and still believes she’s sick. When doctors say otherwise she just changes doctors and it’s all over again.
It sounds like she lies about everything, being a pathological liar. But lso the thing you're specifically describing seems to be Munchausen syndrome, and Munchausen by proxy.
You're probably already familiar with the term but I thought I'd share in case it helped somehow.
Also that sounds like an absolutely awful thing to go though. So sorry you had to deal with that.

my mom is exactly like this, but even worse.. she admitted herself into the hospital the same week she was going to be evicted, hospital found nothing wrong with her but kept her for nearly a week because she wouldn't stop complaining. My child brother and sister had to walk themselves to school because she has no support system as she's alienated everyone. they came home from school to find a lock on the door and had nowhere to go. they were 10 and 11. i hate my mother, and wish i could get her the help she needs, but she'll never admit she has any flaws.

My dad had a brain disease that caused blood clots all throughout his brain and required brain surgery to fix. After he went through brain surgery and got a lot of attention, he started faking multiple other illnesses to the point he was diagnosed with Munchausen syndrome (not the same as Munchausen by proxy). He craved attention and would get it by telling people he was terminal. He was 'terminal' for almost a decade and eventually died from suicide. I miss him every single day but I still have a lot of anger toward him. I used to dream about confronting him like this, but it often just makes it worse. People like this need help, but it's damn near impossible to force them to get it.

It’s poor behavior - however I feel like if the behavior started after a brain injury and invasive brain surgery, he might not have been fully at the wheel there. Surgeons might’ve bumped something. I have a sister who is mostly normal but occasionally becomes really preachy and then angry at me, Following a pretty hard slam to the head that she never got an mri or anything for. It’s frustrating but I try to keep that in mind.

I worked with someone who faked cancer. The way we found out was cuz the new manager that came in had the balls to ask for a doctor's note or to not come back. She didn't come back. Cuz for some reason the management before didn't ask for any documentation. But this lady was saying she was an hour late cuz she was coming to work from chemo... You don't go to work after chemo 🙃

As Ken stated humans can lie about anything sometimes its hard to tell …. But the thing is something like cancer or being a homeless vet, it’s not really ok to ask or not believe them.
I mean if someone tells you they have cancer, you just believe them because most of us can’t imagine lying about having cancer. So most of us are not going to question someone going thru that. I actually had cancer when I was 15 and when I told some of my friends and acquaintances and one of them thought I was lying. At that time I was like who would lie about something like that, but now I see.

I’ve had several brain AVMs (Arteriovenous malformations) and after treating them I had epilepsy attacks and migraines however I never had any cancer related ailments in my life. I couldn’t however write and forgot to speak for two months. I had depression since I couldn’t even get the words of my frustration out but I’ve recovered and moved on with seizure medications to take. It’s sad to know there’s people who lie about having fake illnesses.
The dental issue that Ken was talking about sounds like a stage 2 or 3 Maxillofacial condition, I had a similar operation. It's basically when your upper or lower jaw does not grow to match the opposite jaw. They take bone from the larger jaw and used it to expand the smaller one so that they line up. I also have the Titanium screws and metal plate in my jaw which is always fun at the dentists. I think the operation is called an Osteotomy.
Isn’t Your upper jaw completely connected to your skull? How does it work with that not growing properly and expanding it? Wouldn’t that affect the rest of your skull too? If your upper jaw was too small wouldn’t that make your whole skull smaller?

Edit: If I did do the surgery, it would of forced my mouth to be more slightly open. because my teeth would be resting directly above my bottom teeth. Like I said before, it's no big deal and alot of people are like this. I swear dental is treated like some secret art in the West =_=

The technique is called Orthognathic surgery, I'm not a surgeon and I was unconscious at the time, but I think that the way it works is they move one forward and one back, so yes, your whole lower jaw area is disconnected from the rest of the skull, moved forward and then a plate is put in place to hold it there. In my case I had to have my teeth wired together for 6 weeks in order to allow the broken bones to heal, and then I had physio to learn how to use my mouth again afterwards because the muscles had grown weak from non-use.

Funny thing is, Ken has said this exact story at least once before that I can remember but Felix acts like he's never heard of it before lol. It was like a year a go when they did tons of collabs for a couple months.

I have a friend of 10 years that I had to distance myself from for this exact reason. He’s super insecure and has had some issues being accepted by his family for personal reasons, and he’s always been a compulsive liar. I had to cut ties with him when he started claiming he had leukemia to gain popularity in the drag community. My grandmother has barely survived cancer multiple times so it’s personal to me. This friend and i were roommates for a while, so we shared each other’s location, I had to draw the line when he told me he was at the hospital getting a blood transfusion but his location showed him at home. Cancer is not something to lie about, I was willing to support him and help him grow as a person until that moment.

this reminds me of when my boyfriends ex told him she had cancer before him & i started dating. she had him believing for months she was gonna die soon, going out of her way to lie about doctor visits & whatnot. when she found out he was talking to me after they broke up she tried to guilt him about not staying with her & told him “you couldn’t at least make my last few weeks alive worth it?” or some shit along those lies. it was really messed up. when she got caught on her bs she just tried to flip it & blame him, i don’t know that she ever really truly gave a genuine apology either. i don’t understand how people can lie about something like that. (she also lied about being admitted to a psych ward & about having an abortion. she made him help her name the “dead” baby)

I legitimately had a friend like this in highschool. She lied to us and the entire school that she had cancer. We would take her in a wheelchair to her classes. We found out later from her parents that she was lying.

I had a first aunt who faked cancer because my second aunt genuinely had it for years and evantually lost her battle to it sadly. The first aunt was faking before the second had passed and I kid you not it was right around Christmas time and on December 24th(also my birthday) she decided to announce it “low-key” to have all the attention on her, she was claiming it was a worse stage than the second aunts all this blah blah blah and a week later it’s completely gone…I don’t keep in touch with that side of the family anymore.
She is really caught up in her delusion that she doesn't want to hear anyone tell her the truth and challenge it

It's sadly become a trend for people to fake conditions for attention these days, tik tok is rampant with them.
It's somewhat amazing that the daughter turned out as sane and normal as she is considering her mom is messed up enough to necessitate an indefinite stay at a mental health facility under close medical supervision.
I don't think it's a recent trend. the internet just lets us know of it easier now. cuz I know damn well of this behaviour back in the day based on all them stories from my parents and grand parents. weird ppl have been around from inception. it's just that ppl didn't have a clear term or didn't think there were other ppl experiencing the same situation about it.

I know what it's like to see a stroke and to experience the after effects. I saw my dad have a stroke and since then he's never been the same. He can't walk properly or for very long, it's affected his memory (there's more that's happened). I don't believe she had 17 from personal experience with my father. It's a horrible thing to see, imagine what it's like to have a stroke. She definitely hasn't had 17

My anxiety makes it nearly impossible for me to lie, the thought of a lie send me into a panic attack. So I just assume people tell the truth because even thinking about other people lying makes me anxious. It's actually kind of debilitating not being able to even tell a white lie so it kills me when someone thinks I'm lying. If I'm proven wrong I accept it, may even apologize depending on context or the situation. I usually am grateful or intrigued when I find out the truth on something I thought that turned out to be wrong.
I know the feeling all too well, having multiple people say you're lying when you're not and there's no way for you to convince them is not a good feeling at all

My mother recently passed away from her second battle with cancer. She was a breast cancer survivor, and then developed liver cancer and lost that fight. People like this just make me sick. It's not a game, it's not something you can just make up to get sympathy. Cancer fucking sucks and people like this who pretend to have it should just be condemned.

I had a coworker recently who had apparently lied about literally everything she had told anyone at my job, not anything even really dramatic, she lied about still being married, lied about her kids, lied about the things that she did, lied about all this really mediocre stuff, it makes me wonder if most people like that are lying because they want the attention and the pity, or if they lie because they dont have the internal marurity to handle the fact that their life isnt what they want it to be
Old comment, but this can actually be a mental disorder and they can't help but just lie, for no reason, completely involuntarily. I personally don't have the disorder as far as I'm aware but I've done it multiple times where for absolutely no reason at all I just completely bold facedly lied and didn't even think about it. Every time I do manage to admit immediately afterwards that I lied but I suppose people seriously struggling with it wouldn't be able to do that.

There was a girl at my high school who’s hair fell and she told everyone she had cancer. One of my friends used to be friends with her as kids so talked to her mum and it turned out she didn’t have cancer and her hair fell out due to alopecia. She also lied about being raped and said her family was going through a caught battle against the rapist. My friend checked with her mum again and of course there was no known rape and no court battle. She lied about a lot of stuff like this to try and get attention. She was constantly causing a scene to try get attention. My friend also found a kill list the girl made and among those names were my friends name, another friend’s name and my name apparently for some unknown reason. My friend told teachers and the teachers just ended up making my friends hangout with that girl because apparently it was rude for my friends to not want to hangout with a girl who has them on a kill list. So that girl had a lot of messed up stuff going on.
Reminds me of a dude in middle school who had a whole "I am a smarty nerd" persona. He once bought a plastic bottle and was claiming it was acid (I didn't buy it for a second) and when he spilled it on himself he defeatedly admitted it was just water. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if he decided to double down at that moment and keep on pretending, would he turnout like this woman? Would he turnout like the girl on your class? God knows...
