Good to see someone testing ammo that we can actually find and actually afford, i love your videos they help out alot, picked up 4 boxes of the 115 glad I did😃
@@ToolsandTargets As you said, 11" is too short for most of us. Lighter bullets deflect easier. That is why a .223 at 55 grains can deflect several feet after passing through a wall in the Box O' Truth testing. I am still working on why the 9mm performs so badly in the stats. Perhaps it is the types of shooters most likely to pick it. It really hits the sweet spot for recoil and penetration given its 300-400 ft/lbs muzzle energy. It makes no sense that .22LR beats it most of the time.
AFFORD?! I just picked up two boxes of the 147 for 23 bucks a box. $1.15 a round hurts my stomach when I think about the $0.40 a round Winchester ball 115gr. I take to the range
@@leester321 And once again the old adage applies....how much is your life worth? Not disagreeing at all, we are probably stuck with these prices, if not worse in the future. My husband and I hate paying those prices too.
I'd take the 147s. After accuracy, penetration is more important to me than expansion. Besides, the 147s made it to half an inch expansion. Not too shabby combined with good penetration.
For standard self defense purpose you want a bigger wound channel. A human torso is about 8 to 10 inches thick. That 115 dumped most the energy within that distance. I would carry federal HST 124 Grn +p or gold dot 124+p if I were to own a gun.
This video is older but it’s crazy how cheap you can find these hps for when they perform just as well as federal hst’s and hornady which cost a good deal more
It looks like folks who have a 3.5" or longer wpn might do well to choose the 147 gr., and folks with less than that might be best served to get the 115 gr. Great comparison, Sir!
Wow this is the ONLY video on TH-cam comparing silvertip 115 vs 147. Thank you. I always wanted to see the differnce between these two. I use silvertip 147 for the home defense cuz it is cheaper than HST&Sig but reliable. Im kinda curious to see the difference in penetration and expansion in 4 inch barrel too.
After seeing this video, I’m glad I use the 115 for my carry. Only because I prefer bigger wound channel/expansion over penetration. JMHO. Thank you as always my friend!👍🏻
The wound channel is shorter, therefor, not necessarily bigger volume. A .6" for 11 inches is 3.1 cubic inches in volume. And .5" for 18.5 inches is 3.63 inches in volume. So, the 147 creates 17% more wound volume than the 115.
@@JohnLloydScharf but the hole through a vital organ will be much smaller than for the 115. And there's a good chance that 18.5" will not even be in the target anymore. In which case that's a lot of 0 that works against the average. Gonna say that for these 2 bullets, the 115 is the clear way to go unless you're shooting game animals.
Wow, thank you for a very thorough and no nonsense testing of these rounds. I just bought my first ever box of the 147 grains on a whim, and now I kind of wish I got the one 115s! Either way, thanks for this testing and I will be back to this channel for more info.
Hey Tools I really appreciate all your hard work and testing. It’s very useful for us gun owners to make buying decisions for our hard earned money these days. This helped me to pick up a box of the 115 at my local store for $13.99. I have the same EDC the Sig P365 , so these tests really hit home for me. I picked these up just to have ya know and feel confident that they could get the job done.
Appreciate the comment, my friend. The silvertips have some good rounds in pretty much all of the calibers I've tested. hard to go wrong with them and a good price.
Another awesome test! This one is intriguing because I’m seeing a huge difference in price between these two loads in Northern Kentucky anyway. The 147 grain is running almost double he cost of the 115 grain at my usual ammo stores. I’d like to see a 124 grain +p offering in the silvertip personally
Excellent video! The Silvertips impressed so much I've got them in 9mm, 40 S&W, and in 45 ACP. I never carry the heaviest bullets I can find, just like I never carry a weapon with less than a 4" barrel. Just one of my quirks. I'm glad I chose the 115gr . I'd rather have Expansion over penetration. Keep up the good work!
Seems like maybe 147 for 5 inch barrels and 115 for 3 inch barrels. When comparing wound channels, consider 1 wound channel is wider while the other is longer, which might be a wash if one is considering actual overall volume. In other words a .60 wound channel for 12 inches compared to a .50 wound channel for 16 inches.
The 147 grain was impressive, but the wound channel was better on the 115 grain and so was the expansion. Either would stop somebody, but I would pick the 115 so it doesn’t over penetrate. Thanks for the test, tools🙂
@@ToolsandTargets It is at its best coming out of a 4" barrel from a service sidearm. Only a micro of less than 6" OAL fits my pocket. I would carry my SCCY [too long/fat] for accuracy or my .460 for 300 felons on PCP. Expansion is never a certainty, but expansion certainly reduces penetration. A 115 grain is the optimum for muzzle energy. More energy is a better stopper, but multiple hits is best. With the lower snap of the 147, you may have more hits.
I never shot any of the 147,s from my old Browning hi-power.but the 115 grain is a good bullet ,they saved my hide more than once .they will put some serious holes in any varmint you use them on,and even if you don't kill it right off what ever you put them into will wish it haddent messed with you.
I'm late today , power been off & on since just b4 2pm & lost cell phone for awhile just back on & lost electric again. Not much snow yet had a mix with sleet but snowing again til 7ish am.
Ahh, that sucks. We didn't lose power but it's super windy and sleeting right now. Good bit of snow earlier today but no freezing rain, thank goodness.
Hey Tools really like all your videos. I watch several youtubers and comment to them but you are the only one that responds other than maybe a 😆 or ❤. That's why you are my favorite. Keep them coming. Stay safe.
I know I can definitely tell a difference between 158 grain 357's and a 125 grain 357 from my SP101 snubby !! Brother you stay warm in this bad weather, really appreciate what you do my friend !!
Thanks for the video. Given a choice I probably wouldn't choose either because there are much better performing rounds available. But if I had to use one of these I would probably choose the 147 just because of penetration and my gun has a longer barrel so I would probably get better expansion. 👍👍
@@ToolsandTargets I have rounds that penetrate car doors. I have rounds that penetrate 18 inches. I have rounds meant to under penetrate but get off more hits. If I carried my 17, I would have seventeen 147 grain bullets in it plus one in the chamber.
I keep the 115gr in my guns at all times, but I never see 147 here and as of lately its hard to find the Silver Tips on shelves by me. I know this video is 2 years old, but it does make me feel better about having them in my mags, even though i researched this awhile ago.
I've done my share of shooting both. I lean towards the 115s, they generally allow for quicker followup shots (for me personally) and still perform adequately in testing.
I usually stagger my rounds. I include a few FMJ rounds. Every situation is different. I learned that from my law enforcement days in the 70-80’s when we carried wheel guns. I even kept two rounds of AP staggered. I worked in some rough areas that always presented challenges. It wasn’t til sometime late 90’s that the departments started allowing semi autos.
Scrolling back through some of these. The original 115 silvertip became infamous from the FBI Miami shootout. It penetrated about that far, but the baddie was able to take out several agents before he was finished. (That the wound from that bullet was a fatal wound but not instantly incapacitating is what led to the 10mm and then the 40 S&W) The thing about circles is that even though only measuring 20% larger diameter(.6 for 115 and .5 for 147), it is 44% larger surface area. [I used to use the 10" vs 14" pizza as an example of value. If you, like me, like pizza, you get almost twice as much pizza from a 14" pizza as you do from a 10" and sometimes only pay 60% more. Many say no you don't, 14" is only 40%more, but the area is a value of squaring the radius so 5×5=25 while 7×7=49, so nearly twice as much.] It it why some prefer big bores over small. Small tries to evercome with speed, which gets the advantage in kinetic energy, but none in momentum, nor size of hole. It is interesting also, to look back at how your content has improved in just this short time.👍👍
Tough choice . if I could I pick 124 g . I scored three boxes of 22lr stingers today at wallyworld . I hate that place . waited 20 - 25 minutes for some one to open up the case . great video Tools
Thanks for the video. From my study, flesh penetration is usually deeper than gel. I’m good with the 115 for ccw. 147 from carbine for deer hunting. I can’t use a rifle where I am, so yes, 9 mm is good for deer in lower Michigan. Straight wall cartridges must be 1.16 inches in length. 9 mm is 1.169 in length. I verified w/ DNR & they confirmed.
Hey Tools, here in N. Wyoming today I bought; Norma .22 LRN for $ .16 a round, HSM 38 spcl 158 gr Cowboy action lead $ .75 a round, Armscor 9mm 124gr fmj $ .59 a round, and Norma .380 auto 85gr. MHP for $1.14 round. Ammo is plentiful but the only brass cased 9mm was Armscor. Rest was Tula steel case.
@@ToolsandTargets i was waiting for prices to drop somewhat. That 38 special was mainly what I was after. Kinda pricey for Cowboy action lead but I am glad to have some to shoot again. Been burning through my .357 mag stash!
I am with you on that. Deep over wide until they pass the 15" point. As he said, it is more consistent and, as I said, because it is not transonic. Slowing down from supersonic passing through transonic causes yaw in aircraft as well as ammo.
@@azazelakira12 Not really, but in a violent country like Brazil, I'd rather save my life! If I'm caught with a gun, I'll post bail and leave, if I'm shot.... I might never come back.
Most assailants have their arms in front of them pointing a weapon at you. Hence the penetration of the 147 grain load becomes wise. Remember the failure to penetrate of the 115 grain silver tip in the ‘86 FBI shootout
running the 3 inch barrel I would go with the 115 4 or 4 1/2 inch barrel and up I would think the 147 would shine. as far as weight and recoil I prefer the heavier rounds as they do produce less felt recoil. a few rounds is no big deal but run a few boxes in an outing and you definitely feel it. I do run the 115 grains silver tips in my personal carry guns.
I've "accuracy tested" a lot of hp's for my .45's in the past and my newly purchased (1st) 9mm. That gets expensive in a quick hurry. Silvertips in the 185 gr for my carry .45 had the best accuracy. The 147 gr got the best accuracy in my Canik 9mm. I watch your channel, and others, to see what the expansion looks like. Since my Canik has the 4.19" barrel, I think the 147's will definitely expand more so that is what I load it with. If the 115's were more accurate, that is what I would load it with. Priorities are always... 1) does it cycle reliably, 2) best accuracy and 3) does it expand? As a combat veteran I don't understand the concept of "overpenetration." The enemy always received the appropriate amount of penetration. Enjoy watching your shows. Keep shootin' and I'll keep watchin'.
Here's the thing : IF a crowded environment, and highest confidence of not exiting, not as really shallow as the exotics, the 115 ST's performance is a Feature, not a fault . For all around general purpose , frankly Neither . Unless you had zero ammo , and at the gun counter of the only store in 100 miles only had Silvertip and FMJ , any of the top 10 or 12 124' s would be better .
.050" penetrating to 18" isn't insignificant by any means. Especially if they recoil less making it easier to get an extra quickly into the subject. Good show!
I always buy both of those I don't spend a high price for different brands I started using them couple years ago and I never had a problem with them they always feed right every time I pulled trigger that it goes bang I even buy the 240. 45 never had a problem with them I recommend them
I would prefer to use the 115gr over the 147gr. I’m not a fan of over penetration. The 115 may be a little short on penetration but with the great expansion I would prefer it Thank You for another great video Tools Keep em coming.
Sir, I know, you do not need my two cents to tell you that, you definitely have the most comprehensive tests. Thank you for what you do, Sir. I can make life decisions based on your tests.
Another great video tools I have mixed thoughts on what I prefer over the 115 more the 147 also want to thank you for the live stream last night had me laughing my butt off talking about those sticky holsters LOL
Another awesome video bro. After watching your videos and many others, I think that the 124gr.+P USA 🇺🇸 READY is the PERFECT balance of Accuracy, Expansion and Penetration. Accuracy being the Anchor Point. It doesn’t matter how Deep it Penetrates or how much it Expands if you can’t hit your intended Target exactly where you want too. Can’t wait to see more of your videos.
I would pick 147 grain and with it the extra penetration…especially since my carry barrel length is either 3.4 “or 3.9” which is a tad longer than gun used in the video …and 147 grain out of a 4.9 “barrel is vicious
I love the 115gr i carry in my bularmory cherokee compact 3 1/2 inch barrel. Me personally i would rather have that big wound channel than penetration 11 inches to me is plenty especially with a half inch wound channel
Excellent review ! I use the Silvertip 147s for HD but it is out of a 5 inch barrel. I think is performs better out of that barrel length for sure. I use 115 for conceal carry though bc it performs better out of shorter barrels like we saw in the test. Honestly either would work but for CC I want more expansion and 12-15 inches of penetration which it did in the test. Great rounds ! Also, the GX4 is a great carry option. God bless everyone 🙏
Both will put holes on target will do damage. Either one will do. These arexwhat were used in the 1986 Miami shootout. It triggered the change in more aggressive damage and stopping power rounds. They work, but with specific results based on weight and weapon choice.🎩☯️♠️🏁🎯
Yeah, The Silvertips always bring up the Miami thing. From what I understand there were many factors involved in that and these newer rounds are a different animal.
@Tools&Targets there's one thing that is indisputable. Had that 115 gr SilverTip that Jerry Dove fired early in the shootout penetrated 2 or 3 inches deeper, it would've penetrated Michael Platt's heart, and the fight would've been over in less than 20 seconds or so.
The 115 grain Silvertip was in the 1986 shootout. The 147 came out later BECAUSE of that shootout as did the XTP, HydraShok, Gold Dot, & all the .40 stuff, etc. Plus, just as in the 1997 Hollywood shootout, everyone back then was taught to ONLY shoot center of mass. I remember being a young armed security guard in 1992 & getting yelled at for taking head shots with my .38 Spcl by my training officer. And he was a local SWAT team leader...wow, really? Whatever. I am 53 years old now & I still know how to hit the chest, head, shoulders, biceps, & thighs at 20 yards or so with every gun I carry in every caliber including my Ruger LCP. To me that is more important than the bullet or the caliber, etc.
Real good test . I know the 115gr Silvertip got a bad rap 'cause of the FBI shooting back in '86 , but that was a side shot that went through the arm first and then entered the chest . I think a straight-in shot would be devastating with the 115s' . The 147gr. seemed to have decent penetration but very little upset to the gel . Yep , the 115gr. silvertip looks like the better choice . Thank you for these comparisons !
@@Tom-cp6yj Yes , it has. Even if we use that F.B.I. shooting as an example , the Silvertip round that connected with the gunman was a lethal shot . He just didn't die fast enough .
Being looking for ammo reviews. Picking up a canik mete mc9 next month and looking for a good hollow point. Glad I ran across this video. Definitely need to give the 115 a try
I have a Taurus G3 with the 147, and federal premiums I use too because it's what alot of the officers use in my area (Colorado, and NM) they told me it cuts through branches easier. Lol. Highly suggest the G3 by the way, if you don't already have one... I like that micro Roni has a conversion kit for it, and also it fits in a G19 Roni as well. Happy for your video, because in the two years I've owned my G3, I've never used it at the range or nothin. (Been a hectic couple years...) Now that I'm doing better, I'm hoping to get to the outdoor range here soon. Anyways, thanks for your videos sir. God Bless 🙏🏻😇✌🏻🤠🗽
@@ToolsandTargets Me neither, I absolutely love Taurus 🤠 They are the LG of firearms, they were pretty jammy 15 years ago, but came up strong from trial and error. Nice to see a company that cares to become better
I’d love to see this comparison in Sigs vcrown 115 grain vs 147 grain. I decided to go with the 147 grain in that offering out of my Glock 19. I’m amazed your gel still looks that good after all these tests you’ve run. I think you’re onto something with your process of that gel.
I have a sig test coming soon, but not 147 yet. I actually don't have em in that weight. I need to pick some up. The gel has definitely earned it's keep. Going on 30 remelts now. I'm getting ready to order some fresh ones though and use these for dirtier type tests like barriers.
Total agreement here. I took the 147 Rangers out of my micros and they'll ride in my longer barrels. I'm going with 124 grain V-Crowns for my 3 inch buddies.
Wow I was just watching the other video perfect timing I guess. I love these videos. Not too impressed with these silvertips especially compared to their rangers the recoil on the 115 was noticeable in the other video too glad you mentioned that. Maybe some Sellier & Bellot 9mm Hollows next?
I'd like to see him cut the tip off a S&B FMJ. It would reduce the grains to 90 grains, increase the velocity, and cause it to expand. Penetration would be the problem.
@@ToolsandTargets I like to see anyone get Rangers for any caliber, but particularly for .357 and .45. But, then, I would like to have .38 Special Nyclad and 9mm Black Talon, too.
Something in between is probably a Glock 19 or Glock 48 length barrel. The 147 from a 4" barrel would give better expansion and a bit less penetration. If I could only choose one or the other I'd rather have penetration over expansion.
This video was perfect for me. I bought 147gr for my G3c last year because I heard it was more accurate, but got curious how they both compare in terms of performance. The barrel length is a little longer so I'm guessing I'd get a little boost of velocity. I didn't know until recently that some hollow points don't expand under various conditions, but I think 147gr is right for me.
The 115 would cause a lot of damage certainly but we need to have the denim in front of the gel block. It may change the results of both projectiles significantly!
There's no doubt it slightly changes the performance of all hollow points. I've done some clothing tests in the past and saw enough to know I don't need to use it on every test.👍
I hit a coyote attacking my chickens with silver tip 115 it was about 8-10 yards hit! It didn’t drop the coyote but it ran off and died about 50 yards from where it was hit! Earlier that day I was at the range and only had enough for a mag of silver tip 115 when I left. So imo the silver tips 115 are a good round! Ty bud for awesome video!💯👊🏼👍🏼
I slowed down the replay of the two rounds. The impact of the 115 has a much bigger temporary wound cavity. But I shoot 124g. Shot what you practice with.
The temporary cavity is nearly meaningless at handgun velocities. It doesn't cause much in the way of additional tearing/bleeding in the elastic tissues of the body. Rifle rounds are a completely different matter.
Not the results I was thinkin was gonna happen !! Thanks for the video !! P.S. watched the live until 1;30am but couldn't hang with the big boys, but great show !!
Well I found 147 today didn't find 115 but would rather have 124 grain silver hollow i once heard that the 147 can stop some one faster with its velocity & penetration do to its slower out come
Live stream last night was a blast .there needs to be a better hollow point made that mush rooms more 115 is what I carry in my 9mm great video as always 👍
It's almost like you made this video just for me. When I carry a 9mm, the GX4 is my carry pistol and I have the Winchester Silver tip 115 grain in it. I like the lighter round for the lighter gun, but your video here has me wondering if I shouldn't try the 147 grain round. I like that you present facts and let the viewer decide. Paul Harrel does the same and that's pretty good company to be in.
I've done quite a bit of firing with premium 115, 124, and 147-gr loads through my Sig P-365, then later my Springfield Hellcat. The 147-gr loads were consistently milder in recoil, with, as you noted, more of a push than a snap. Similar to a .45 ACP. The 115-grs were snappier, with the 124-gr loads having the most muzzle flip.
Alternate 115 and 147 in your magazine in your Carry pistol. Get the best of both loads, if you are forced to fire four rounds or more, to stop an attacker.
This Winchester 147 is the round they based the original FBI testing on. You said it is more consistent. The reason for that is it is not transonic like the 115. The 115 needs to be supersonic until it hits the target. Anything in the transonic area between .9 and 1.1 mach is destablizing. The 147 makes a bigger wound because of length rather than width.
Whenever I carry a 9mm off-duty (S&W Shield) it's loaded with the Winchester 115 grain STHP. My usual off-duty gun (Springfield RO Compact) is loaded with the Winchester 185 grain STHP. Please conduct a gel test with the .45 ACP Silvertip.
Out of these two 147gr because accuracy and penetration is king for me. The Silvertip 115 was the round used in the 86 FBI shootout. It didn't penetrate enough in that scenario.
Lol I just woke up brother 😂🥊 and straight into the jelly test...... I love the 9mm, love the 147s and swear by the 115s . The 147s are noticeable in the PO9 ( recoil ) but they bind up in the Kimber..... Perhaps the 147s would be good for punching through denser surfaces where the 115 might splatter .. I always felt the heavier one travelled deeper due to their own weight but your teaching me lately perhaps speed is the winner...... 🇦🇺🏁👍🇺🇸🏁✌️Keep sending them brother , keep the dreams alive big fella 🦘
I wish the ammo manufacturers would post on the box the minimum barrel length you need to get the maximum expansion, or at least the barrel length they use to get their velocity figures.
I liked both but if I had to choose between the two I would load up the 115s and of course I don’t know many folks that have as much to pick from as you do, I have an adequate supply from which to choose from and I keep several mags loaded with different types for two different carry pistols and I don’t load and. Unload them I extra extra mags for my practicing and training
Agreed. The 115 likes this short barrel much better than the 147. I do the same thing as far as having a few different things loaded up in different guns.👍
I know you are big on penetration. With that being said, I’m sure you like the 147. I still like how big the expansion was on the 115. Another great video. Thanks tools.
The 147 grain slightly exceeded maximum penetration depth but despite having a slightly smaller wound channel it appears the shock or stretching runs deeper. If you get into a worst case scenario defensive shooting where you may be dealing with an armed assailant in a fighting pose a full frontal center mass shot may not be an option. I personally don't blame 9mm for this issue but the Winchester silver-tip was at the center of the controversy over the FBI 1986 Miami Dade county shooting when one of the bullets recovered from a suspect who had been shot multiple times but continued to fight was a light for caliber 9mm silver-tip that stopped short of penetrating the suspects heart. In the years that followed the FBI famously moved towards 10mm auto, later 40 S&W, and today there seems to be a trend in moving back toward 9mm though honestly I don't think 9mm ever went away just like 45 ACP. Back in the 1920's when the FBI was chasing bank robbers caliber was an issue and both the 38-super-auto+p in a 1911 & 357 Magnum in revolvers we're look to as a prescribed solution. Slowly 38 super faded into obscurity though many people own these highly collectable guns I've only actually known only one security guard that carried 38 super in a S&W 627 revolver ironically if memory serves me right he carried with 125 grain Winchester silver-tips in moon clips which I believe both the gun and ammunition have been discontinued and are no longer in production. This was at least 12 years.
another jelly time !!!! always a good day when those are on.....and thanks for another really great livestream last nite....did we break the time record with that one??? a little better than 6 hrs. enjoyed it....alot of good subjects was talked about and great points were made...not to mention getting to see you rant again...been awhile.....always good when like minded people can get together and chat...i've carried silvertips in some of my guns...i'd be hard pressed to chose between these two....either one is going to make the reciever have a really bad day...i think you know what i switched to for my carry round in 9mm
I realize I'm late to this party. But I would really like to see the 147s tested from a longer barrel. My 3, 9mms that I carry (one at a time) are a 2nd generation Sigma, a Canik TP9DA and a Tisas Stingray Commander sized1911, all 3 have barrels 4" or longer. Regardless I greatly enjoy your videos and I am working my way through your older videos because they are worth viewing.
You might want to test the 9mm Remington UMC 115 jhp. They seem to work very well. UMC & HTP are the same bullet. They are priced much better than the fancier HP’s and they seem to work. Great Video by the way.

Nice! It did great here even out of this short barrel. Appreciate you wtaching the vids!😎👊

I think a 147 would be great in a PC Carbine. I carry the 115 and 147 a lot actually. Good to see the 115 does so well.
Always been a fan of heavier lead . If the 147 would have hit a rib bone the extra energy would have really made it blossom !
Yeah. I think another inch of barrel would do wonders for it.
And it likely would have kept penetrating rather than being deflected or stopped entirely.
That’s what she said. Lol
The 147 has extra mass, but it has less energy than the 115. About 8% less out of the muzzle.
@@ToolsandTargets try it in hellcat rdp with a bit a long barrel.
Wow, that's crazy, and I agree. A 124 in this round would be the sweet spot.👍
Sig has 124 gr Elite Defense JHPs and, at least where I am, they’re the same price as Winchester Silver Tips.
Dude that livestream last night was awesome!
Seriously entertaining and you brought up many good topics while explaining much of this community.
👍👍👊
Agreed. Had fun!
Appreciate that, brother! 😎👊
@@ToolsandTargets "Chicken Little appendix carries a SCCY in his Sticky Holster." That is my over-simplified reduction of six hours into ten words.
@@JohnLloydScharf 🤣🤣🤣
Good show on the Taurus GX4, a TRUE micro for pocket carry. GREAT PICK!!!!!!
Thank you sir. I think these small ones are definitely the most practical to test with.
Yeah, the 147 could have used a little more speed to be at it's best I think.
What's the old adage? I need penetration. Expansion is a bonus.
I never shot any of the 147,s from my old Browning hi-power.but the 115 grain is a good bullet ,they saved my hide more than once .they will put some serious holes in any varmint you use them on,and even if you don't kill it right off what ever you put them into will wish it haddent messed with you.

I know I can definitely tell a difference between 158 grain 357's and a 125 grain 357 from my SP101 snubby !! Brother you stay warm in this bad weather, really appreciate what you do my friend !!
Thank you sir. It's nasty outside here right now. I aint havin nothin to do with that mess tonight!
I like the 115 also. Expansion and wound channel is what I look for.
Absolutely.👍
Thanks for the video. Given a choice I probably wouldn't choose either because there are much better performing rounds available. But if I had to use one of these I would probably choose the 147 just because of penetration and my gun has a longer barrel so I would probably get better expansion. 👍👍
Agreed. I wouldn't purposely go lookin for these.
😎👊
I've done my share of shooting both. I lean towards the 115s, they generally allow for quicker followup shots (for me personally) and still perform adequately in testing.
😎👊
I usually stagger my rounds. I include a few FMJ rounds. Every situation is different. I learned that from my law enforcement days in the 70-80’s when we carried wheel guns. I even kept two rounds of AP staggered. I worked in some rough areas that always presented challenges. It wasn’t til sometime late 90’s that the departments started allowing semi autos.
Scrolling back through some of these. The original 115 silvertip became infamous from the FBI Miami shootout. It penetrated about that far, but the baddie was able to take out several agents before he was finished. (That the wound from that bullet was a fatal wound but not instantly incapacitating is what led to the 10mm and then the 40 S&W)
The thing about circles is that even though only measuring 20% larger diameter(.6 for 115 and .5 for 147), it is 44% larger surface area.
It is interesting also, to look back at how your content has improved in just this short time.👍👍
Appreciate that. 💥🍕💥 😎👊
I really want to see these perform with the heavy clothing test!!

Tough choice . if I could I pick 124 g . I scored three boxes of 22lr stingers today at wallyworld . I hate that place . waited 20 - 25 minutes for some one to open up the case . great video Tools
Nice! I have to wait like that every time I get something there. It's like you're asking them to give you a kidney. Miserable place.
The expansion of 147 not as good as I expected. 115 was very good on expansion. Good live last night. Thanks for the video.
Appreciate that, brother! Appreciate you hangin out!
Appreciate ya, brother!😎👊
I was on the fence about getting the 115 gr glad I found your review bought a few boxes.
My fellow southern brother keep doing what you’re doing! I’ve bought so much variety of ammo over the past few months because of you!

That 38 special was mainly what I was after. Kinda pricey for Cowboy action lead but I am glad to have some to shoot again.
Been burning through my .357 mag stash!
I'm always going to prefer the 147 grain ones, if you can, do it with the 147 grain Magtech, because it's the only one they make here in Brazil. Hug!
I am with you on that. Deep over wide until they pass the 15" point. As he said, it is more consistent and, as I said, because it is not transonic. Slowing down from supersonic passing through transonic causes yaw in aircraft as well as ammo.
Can you carry in Brazil?
I'll see if I can grab some Magtech. appreciate you watching!
👍
Can you explain what happened in the shootout?
The Silvertip rounds have been modified a number of times since then. New silvertips are not the silvertips of 1986.
Hence torso shot placement or double tap. 😊
running the 3 inch barrel I would go with the 115 4 or 4 1/2 inch barrel and up I would think the 147 would shine. as far as weight and recoil I prefer the heavier rounds as they do produce less felt recoil. a few rounds is no big deal but run a few boxes in an outing and you definitely feel it. I do run the 115 grains silver tips in my personal carry guns.
Tell em they need to make these in 124!😜
@@ToolsandTargets yeah I find that strange that we dont,
I've "accuracy tested" a lot of hp's for my .45's in the past and my newly purchased (1st) 9mm.
Here's the thing :
IF a crowded environment, and highest confidence of not exiting, not as really shallow as the exotics, the 115 ST's performance is a Feature, not a fault .
Good show!
9mm Silvertip 115 gr. is my main Ammo. No issues with my M&P Shield, SD9VE, HI Point Carbine, and Taurus PT111 G2.
💥🐺💥
I like 147 in the shorter barrels. I agree on the felt recoil difference.
It's definitely noticeable.👍
I always buy both of those I don't spend a high price for different brands I started using them couple years ago and I never had a problem with them they always feed right every time I pulled trigger that it goes bang I even buy the 240. 45 never had a problem with them I recommend them
😎👍
I would prefer to use the 115gr over the 147gr. I’m not a fan of over penetration. The 115 may be a little short on penetration but with the great expansion I would prefer it
Thank You for another great video Tools
Keep em coming.
Thank you sir. I think the 115 would definitely get the job done out of this short barrel.👍

Thank you sir. Them icky Sticky's!😆
Very true!
Most self defense shootings take place at 7 yards or under. If you're not able to hit what you're aiming at that close, I don't think it's the ammo.
I would pick 147 grain and with it the extra penetration…especially since my carry barrel length is either 3.4 “or 3.9” which is a tad longer than gun used in the video …and 147 grain out of a 4.9 “barrel is vicious
Good video. If I were to carry this round, I would go with the 115 grain Silvertip.
Thank you sir.😎👊
I love the 115gr i carry in my bularmory cherokee compact 3 1/2 inch barrel. Me personally i would rather have that big wound channel than penetration 11 inches to me is plenty especially with a half inch wound channel
I still have some Silvertip, from around 1982. It is not 1982 any more, I carry HST now: 147, 180, 230+P, depending on the caliber.
HST is definitely fantastic stuff.
Great video I appreciate you addressing the difference in recoil thanks because I shoot 3 inch I would say 147gr
Thank you sir.😎👍
Excellent review ! I use the Silvertip 147s for HD but it is out of a 5 inch barrel. I think is performs better out of that barrel length for sure. I use 115 for conceal carry though bc it performs better out of shorter barrels like we saw in the test. Honestly either would work but for CC I want more expansion and 12-15 inches of penetration which it did in the test. Great rounds ! Also, the GX4 is a great carry option. God bless everyone 🙏
Thank you sir. Great rounds and I agree, the GX4 is a nice tool!
@@ToolsandTargets true, but the history doesn't have a clean slate of new versus old. It's a stigma and cross they have to bear.
@@ratagris21 For sure.
I don't think I will be using Silvertips for my edc. HST, Hydra shok deep, Underwood or Super Vel. Thanks.
👍
Real good test . I know the 115gr Silvertip got a bad rap 'cause of the FBI shooting back in '86 , but that was a side shot that went through the arm first and then entered the chest . I think a straight-in shot would be devastating with the 115s' . The 147gr. seemed to have decent penetration but very little upset to the gel . Yep , the 115gr. silvertip looks like the better choice . Thank you for these comparisons !
Thank you sir. 😎👍
The silvertip 9mm has improved since then..
@@Tom-cp6yj Yes , it has. Even if we use that F.B.I. shooting as an example , the Silvertip round that connected with the gunman was a lethal shot . He just didn't die fast enough .

That’s amazing, 30 remelts! My block was significantly more cloudy after less than 10. You’ve got a hell of a system processing that stuff brother.
Nice test! That 147gr would likely be optimized in a little longer barrel, maybe 4" or so. Really enjoying all your content, thanks for sharing!
Appreciate that. I think you're right. I may go back and do another test on this with a full size barrel.👍
147s are suited well for suppressed long barrels or 9mm Carbines with stressors.
Total agreement here. I took the 147 Rangers out of my micros and they'll ride in my longer barrels. I'm going with 124 grain V-Crowns for my 3 inch buddies.
I've seen Silvertip at my local Academy. I'd go with the 115gr. A nice wound channel wins for me. Good video
The 115 definitely dumped some energy in the jelly. Appreciate you checkin it out!
I'd pick either, but I'd put them in the bedroom gun with the longer barrel. For carry I'm sticking with the HST.
Agreed.👍
Wow I was just watching the other video perfect timing I guess. I love these videos. Not too impressed with these silvertips especially compared to their rangers the recoil on the 115 was noticeable in the other video too glad you mentioned that. Maybe some Sellier & Bellot 9mm Hollows next?
I'd like to see him cut the tip off a S&B FMJ. It would reduce the grains to 90 grains, increase the velocity, and cause it to expand. Penetration would be the problem.
Hmmm, I'll see if I can get a hold of those.👍
@@ToolsandTargets I like to see anyone get Rangers for any caliber, but particularly for .357 and .45.
😎👍
I was surprised by the results too, which is why I'm especially happy about your video, so thanks again 😇✌🏻
Appreciate you watching, my friend.😎👊
This video was perfect for me. I bought 147gr for my G3c last year because I heard it was more accurate, but got curious how they both compare in terms of performance. The barrel length is a little longer so I'm guessing I'd get a little boost of velocity. I didn't know until recently that some hollow points don't expand under various conditions, but I think 147gr is right for me.
Ready for werewolves!💥🐺💥
Thank you sir.😎👊
I slowed down the replay of the two rounds. The impact of the 115 has a much bigger temporary wound cavity. But I shoot 124g. Shot what you practice with.
Agreed. Wish they made these in 124.
Appreciate that! I had no idea it had been 6 hours!

Live stream last night was a blast .there needs to be a better hollow point made that mush rooms more 115 is what I carry in my 9mm great video as always 👍
Thank you sir. Winchester makes stuff that does a lot better than these for sure.
Good one tools like your content enjoy the test you do thanks breath of fresh air from other gun channels
Really appreciate that, my friend!
This GX4 is a heck of a bargain for a micro 9mm. This one is still running perfect.
@@ToolsandTargets I've got no complaints about mine.
Yessir. Definitely a noticeable difference.👍
Good summary.
Alternate 115 and 147 in your magazine in your Carry pistol. Get the best of both loads, if you are forced to fire four rounds or more, to stop an attacker.
I'd go with 115 or 124 for shorties, but in a 4 or 5 inch barrel the 147 will be fast enough to open and give a more traumatic wound cavity.
😎👍
This Winchester 147 is the round they based the original FBI testing on. You said it is more consistent. The reason for that is it is not transonic like the 115. The 115 needs to be supersonic until it hits the target. Anything in the transonic area between .9 and 1.1 mach is destablizing. The 147 makes a bigger wound because of length rather than width.
👍
Whenever I carry a 9mm off-duty (S&W Shield) it's loaded with the Winchester 115 grain STHP. My usual off-duty gun (Springfield RO Compact) is loaded with the Winchester 185 grain STHP. Please conduct a gel test with the .45 ACP Silvertip.
I need to take a look and see if I have some in .45acp. Would be a good test.
Out of these two 147gr because accuracy and penetration is king for me. The Silvertip 115 was the round used in the 86 FBI shootout. It didn't penetrate enough in that scenario.
😎👍
Rise and shine to jelly time! 124 might be the sweet spot in this round if they offered it. Aint no slowin us down!😎👊
I wish the ammo manufacturers would post on the box the minimum barrel length you need to get the maximum expansion, or at least the barrel length they use to get their velocity figures.
That would be nice.
147 gr. silver tip is the perfect tool for a suppressed 10.5 AR pistol.
Excellent for home defense. 💜🇺🇲
Another great jelly test Tools I would take the 115 grain Stay Safe Stay 2A Strong 🇺🇸
Tthank you, brother!
I prefer a heavy round. More energy retention for crushing bone and muscle. If attackers are extra fat, those extra inches do make a difference.
I know you are big on penetration. With that being said, I’m sure you like the 147. I still like how big the expansion was on the 115. Another great video. Thanks tools.
Thank you sir. The 155 probably did better overall on this one.
I’ve got the 115 Silvertips loaded up and a second mag with HST’s. I change between which I carry
Nice. Sounds like you got it covered.👍
What if you only get one shot, and the 115 gr holds true to its nature and under penetrates?
another jelly time !!!! always a good day when those are on.....and thanks for another really great livestream last nite....did we break the time record with that one??? a little better than 6 hrs. enjoyed it....alot of good subjects was talked about and great points were made...not to mention getting to see you rant again...been awhile.....always good when like minded people can get together and chat...i've carried silvertips in some of my guns...i'd be hard pressed to chose between these two....either one is going to make the reciever have a really bad day...i think you know what i switched to for my carry round in 9mm
Yessir. We shattered the record by about 2 hours!😂😂😂
@@ToolsandTargets thought we did...i hung in till the last..but i was fading.....lol
Great video, I prefer the 147g, just can compromise on the penetration.
I have both and will be carrying both. Got them on sale for 16 a box. Allot better than 30-40$ a box for other JHP

Appreciate that. I need to revisit quite a few especially with the cloth barrier I use now.
115 in the summer 147 in the winter. At least up in the Northern states.
Down south 115 all day everyday. Just my 2 cents.
They're usually tested from a 4 inch barrel. They specify on the website
😎👍
Thank you for the Recoil info n should put it in all ur videos with different ammo.
Btw the live stream was awesome last night and I love the rants . I had a good time . 6 hours 2 minutes and 24 seconds lol
Thank you sir. Record was shattered!😆
Wow, 147, surprised penitration. 115 I would use. I only have 4.4 in 9mm pistol. So good deal Thanks Tools
I think that 147 would definitely benefit from a little more barrel.👍
Why were you surprised by the 147?
You might want to test the 9mm Remington UMC 115 jhp. They seem to work very well. UMC & HTP are the same bullet. They are priced much better than the fancier HP’s and they seem to work. Great Video by the way.
Thank you sir. Just saw some of the UMC at my local shop. May have to grab em to test.
