      Not to mention the old ones had the lovely hydraulic steering and were just about the driving experience when the gated manual was offered. Now the new R8 is a great car on the performance front, however I felt that it got too square on the edges and all around if we’re speaking aesthetics. Yeah, the first gen still have that classy and timeless look to them that will be hard to top.

      The new gens are way less aggressive…….. literally Lamberty will even say the first gen is more raw and aggressive looking. Wider fenders, more angles, open bumper, full carbon side blades, etc.

      I don't think it's all that beautiful - appealing I think would be a better word - but it is timeless because they didn't over-style it. It'll never look out of place or odd anyway. I do think the V8 manual is a fantastic drivers car - not so much with the auto. Unfortunately Audi (un) reliability and parts availability will probably be the killer for them long term.

    The lines of the coupe and the sideblades (a defining element of the R8) are what elevate the coupe for me over the spyder. The sound deficit can be remedied by an aftermarket exhaust (necessary) as was done by the owner of the car you drove.

    Having worked as a car journalist for 11 years (also at the time when the R8 and Gallardo were in production) I can without much exaggeration tell you that the theoretical weight difference between the Lambo and the Audi is purely due to one determining factor: the cocaine the Italian marketeers are on, which makes them dream up wildly optimistic numbers.

    Nearly bought a manual R8 V10 a few years back but, and don’t laugh, way too much power for me at the time - the car under flat out acceleration was simply way ahead of me and although I’m sure with time and safe practice I would have adjusted to its performance I just thought not now. Don’t get me wrong I still think it’s a great car despite the somewhat boring cabin

    • @Ripst4rt
      @Ripst4rt ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have a V10 manual - cabin is boring as standard but there were several options in seats and interior carbon fiber trim which sharpen it up a bit. I was willing to forgo some of the fancy italian interior in order to get a bigger frunk and some storage space behind the seats. With a valvetronic exhaust and gated manual its a hard car to beat for the price tag.

    • @STORM3SHADOW
      @STORM3SHADOW ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Too much power? hehe The Quattro AWD keeps you from looking like a Mustang or Charger owner and wrapping it around a tree. Its not a scary car to drive at all. Unless you are new to driving, then I can see why it would be intimidating.

      @@STORM3SHADOW I’ve had fast Audi Quattro’s before - RS4 and a couple of other Quattro models so am very comfortable with four wheel handling but when I weighed up whether I really needed the acceleration performance of the V10 the answer was no. I’m not a rookie driver, far from it and today happily drive a Porsche Carrera 4S amongst others but 9 years ago decided not to buy it. There’s a saying that we usually apply to Pilots but equally applies to car drivers “there are old drivers and bold drivers but no old bold drivers” meaning you don’t live long by being bold out on the roads. As a pilot it’s written “there are old pilots and bold pilots but no old bold pilots”. I’m sure one could spec the cabin better but it did look very familiar to the TT at the time. I did enjoy the manual gear change though

    I do like your channel a lot and am subscribed, but there's just something about your "presenter voice" that rubs me the wrong way. It's very old school top gear, and your cadence is quite similar to Jeremy Clarkson. I've heard you speak more normally and it's not like this at all. It's obviously working for you, I just personally wish you could tone it down a bit and speak more naturally.

    Interesting that you class this as the last of the original pre facelift cars when the GT has the facelift bumpers, splitters, mirrors which are essentially what the facelift was ( barring the lights).
    The GT engine was essentially std but revised airbox and tune. The 2013 cars got the revised 570PS engine which was limited in the R8 ( until the true swan song mk 1 LMX) so a 2013 R8 Plus which is also lightened ( but still 30kg heavier than a GT) with 570PS ( once derestricted for £400) and costs £20k less ( money to spend with Ricky), and without the lame gearbox, makes a very compelling argument

    9:55 that loud roaring will cost you here a fortune as fine cause due to new regulations you have to avoid any noise that is avoidable. Rev it up and a house is in the vicinity or any people you are screwed, and the police confiscates the car first, then lets it investigate by an engineer and then the whole bill comes to your home with a lot of mandatory requirements to fullfill regulations.
    Therefore game over for ice in Europe cause EV are a lot more quiet, also insurances will explode in 10 years when the spare part prices for old ice cars will explode cause these are already planned in the budgets of the manufacturers, when to start and how much. Cause there will be a point of no return, when they know that every ice car sold will cost them money. And that point in time is coming nearer and nearer and even faster which means there will be a point when suddenly all will stop their production
    If you do not believe it let me know why all the small and cheapest cars have suddenly all disappeared, those 7999 € brand new cars from dealers incl. AC and some extras. and there were a lot available just 4 summers ago, now you find nothing.

    LFA, Scuderia and R8 GT just sound great thanks to slower shifts, almost like a manual car would.
    People just got stupidly blinded by specs and speed and it ruined what matters. First complete loss of manuals and then hedious sounding cars rushing something that shouldnt be rushes. Its lile rushing a musician so the start messing up playing too fast skipping notes and feeling too nuff to the ears.

    Two words of warning , The Audi R8 as no Euro NCAP rating and are bad in accidents at low speed just search on the net, the engine detaching from the rear the second MK 2 version had a new carbon fibre stronger panel behind the seats between the engine. Also a strange one a number of Pro footballers had them and had leg problems during the season ? Seating position and pedals or positions of them ended up not driving them or selling them.

      Half of all Audi models at that time had no NCAP rating.. Not just the R8 but A5, A7, A8. It was not mandatory. There is no evidence of these cars being vulnerable in accidents. On the contrary. The space frame was designed and built for racing.

    I had the pleasure of driving a 2011 V10 manual...so sweet. Never driven the paddle one, but I wouldn't want one. Period.

    u know bmw and porsche fan boys love to hate on the r8. Understeery, heavy, audi brand blah blah, but look at it, those dont even have a single supercar (entry or not) with charm that can compete in the same price range. Yeah BMWs are fast but it's never special experience with the engine in front. And until the xdrive M cars are out recently, it's nothing but spinning tires on social media. Porsches it's never special until u reach the gt cars, and even then none of them sound as good as the v10. Had 6 911s (9967.1, 997.2, 991.1, 991.2, 992) and none of them was able to stay in the garage more than a year (while the 981 stayed for 6 years, the 718 4.0 not even a year), until I settled with the gt3rs as the charming one. 9 years with the r8 alongside ferraris and lambos, I didnt know the gt is that special with all the bits. Even my base v10 is one of the best cars ever owned overall

    Thing is, the R8 ISN'T a Supercar! 'Supercar' is an ironic, sarcastic term coined in the 70's/80's for expensive cars, that were all about how they looked, while being impractical, unusable, and unreliable...the R8 is none of these things, and should be appreciated because of it!

    If you listen carefully, that engine screams money. And should they make an RS3-gt convertible

    Your obsession with the R8 is becoming unhealthy. The R8 in any incarnation is at best an entrance into the supercar world.
    For someone who believes that a 911 isn't a supercar, while leaving objective reality behind to praise the lowest level of supercar, you clearly need your head checked.
    The other point I would like to make is that your bias really dwells on nostalgia. The old cars of your youth really don't cut it anymore when it comes to reliability, performance and - yes, let's go there - style. Behave, will ya.

    • @nickcunningham6588
      @nickcunningham6588 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bizarre comments about nostalgia. The R8, inc Gen 1, is one of the most reliable supercar ever built. Performance, you are somewhat correct on paper but driving enjoyment is not on paper. Modern supercars do not have the noise, feel and drama of the analogue supercar. If you just want performance, buy a Plaid. And finally your last point on style... Not only is that highly subjective but I think most people would agree that cars like the Countach, F40 etc are special today despite their age (and yes, also lack of performance.) So with 1/2 point out of 3 and a rather mean spirited attitude, I suggest it's you who needs to pay a little visit to the head doctor.
