Detroit fan here… I remember this play and the Eric Hipple KO on the sideline like yesterday!!! I hate the current Bears of 2024 but we Detroiter’s were pulling for Da’ Bears in 1984/85!
That Hipple hit was brutal! Jarring as a kid because his helmet came off (at least his head wasn't still in it) and you could see how much pain he was in.
He still got the quick release and accuracy. Ball would have been outta there. Nobody had that kind of release then. He would have still been Brady. Brady played in the 2000’s too. Pre coddling.
@@willwilliams7215 stop lying Brady does nothing all time great and Marino has the quickest release ever..you mean Brady gets that ball out of his hands before he gets smashed, oh wait they changed the rules for Brady and cheated for him to win.
@@rcl1955caMobile QB are more susceptible to injuries as they are exposed while running. A pocket passer with a quick release like Marino and Brady wouldn’t get hit as often.
The hit itself wasn't that bad. Marshall went head to chest not head to head. The damage was really done by the Silverdome turf, which was nothing more than carpet over concrete. Always amazed me that Barry Sanders never blew out a knee.
Delivering CTE grade hits that can end livelihoods? That era depended on fans having a cartoon perspective on the violence in the game and players, like smokers years ago, having an imperfect understanding of what this really does to their bodies.
Yes, CTE everywhere! Who doesn't want the football players they cheer on Sunday to live shortened lives filled with chronic pain and terrible CTE side effects?
When I was a kid I thought Joe Ferguson was like 50 when he was on the Lions because he had already played for awhile with the Bills. He joined the Lions at 35 and played in the league another 5 years after taking those kinds of hits!
James Jones was absolutely USELESS. What a waste of a first round draft pick he was. I remember watching him as a kid and thinking "this guy brings nothing to the table." Here we see the QB sacrifice himself to get the ball to James Jones and Jones grows alligator arms. I was so happy when the Lions got rid of him and drafted Barry Sanders. I'd say I can't believe the Lions wasted a 1st round pick on James Jones but then again, Russ Thomas was in charge during that time and had no clue as to how to build a winner. The only thing he knew how to do was be a cheapskate with William Clown Ford's money.
It is a shame Perry couldn’t control his weight and conditioning. He had a burst off the ball and his fumble pick up later in this game was pretty good as well. Wilber Marshall was a bad man. The funny thing is I would bet there were receivers open on every play when you played the Bears and their 46 d. The problem was being able to get rid of the ball quick enough.
That's targeting and an ejection in 2024 NFL. 100% legal in 1985. Can't be a revisionist and both marshall and ferguson did what they had to on that play.
Legal or not, I don’t think I’ve seen any quarterback take a shot like that. Ferguson got launched off the ground and flew back. BOOM! As John Madden would say.
Ferguson stood in there like a boss and delivered the ball. The WR was the scaredy-cat who dropped it.
FB dropped it
I heard when they went to tear down the silverdome, he was still lying on the field.
This is so savage! 😂🤣
Legend has it that the floor of the dome still vibrates.
Out before he hit the ground
Joe Ferguson was a excellent quarterback for the Bills and tough as nails... And an even better man...
The ref checking if hes still breathing lol
Wow!
He killed ’em
even besides the monstrous hit.... that turf just looks like it f***ing hurts
I played one game in August 2003, freshman year of HS at the Silverdome, that turf over concrete did F’n hurt
Legend has it that Ferguson is still picking pieces of Wilbur Marshall shrapnel out of his skin to this day.
@soxrule74 Ferguson is still laying there.
Joe was my college QB. Toughest, but one of the nicest, guys I ever have known.
Are you there when Bradshaw played?

After this hit Joe Ferguson had to re-evaluate his life decisions and restructure his hopes and dreams!!
When it was Open Season on "Everyone" back in the day
Yes… that’s when football was great. You’re on the field your fair game.
Thinking Brady etc can excel in this era is absolutely hilarious

@@willwilliams7215 pre coddling he wasn’t 💩 but a game manager he tore his acl and now you can’t touch the qb
Brady would have never survived in this era especially with his lack of mobility.

Back when football was football and the game was played as it should be.

As a Chicagoan i approve this hit we bang hard homies😅
You don’t do shit.

Mike Ditka said he thought marshall killed him
I did too. I remember that hit.
Joe Ferguson still wears his helmet everyday at the nursing home.
I remember watching this. Thought he was dead
Me too! Ditka also said the exact same thing.
Ditka thought he legit may be dead

SuckaSS #30 drops the pass when Ferguson hits him right in the hands.

I felt that shit at my house. He murdered Ferguson 😂
Would be banned from the league in today's games
Well it wasn’t so irrelevant comment.
I bet Ferguson still has nightmares of this hit.
He do.
Doubt it as he probably doesn’t remember the hit.
Damn that was actually a clean hit.
Actually, it wasn't. He speared him with his helmet.
Wrong, it was clean, candyass.

His soul left his body.
In this NFL, that's a yeat suspension.
I heard he's still wearing his Lions uniform in the old folks home. Guess he never took it off.
You could see his soul leave his body!
In todays NFL Marshall would get 5 years in prison for that hit 🤣
The day Wilbur Marshall killed Joe Ferguson.
To shreds you say?
I wish they were still allowed to play defense
But did you die?
That Astroturf was soft as a pillow
Yeah a concrete pillow. 😂😂
He finally got a chance to start and got injured
@clint turner 😂😂😂😂
Damn
Cheap hit, used crown of his helmet
*No cheap hits back in 1985*
*And he got him with his" *shoulder*
lol I keep watching it back waiting to see that not be a spear with a helmet first hit. @@Gee-sm8ni
Singletary used to brag about all the helmets he cracked. Different era.
Now this is "roughing the passer" unfortunately 😕
No flags
Where’s the flag ????!!!!!!!!! LOL. If Wilbur did that today, he would be arrested on the field and taken off in handcuffs
It's 1985. No foul. Get up, Joe. 😂
Brady wouldn't last two seasons back then...
He hit with his helmet that's what knocked him out ...
