Originally, Courtney Cox was offered to play Rachel. But she convinced with the creators of the show that she felt more relatable with Monica. She made the right decision. The final result of the casting was perfect.
Sorry but there’s no debate here, that’s cheating in my book even if they were on a “break”. If they were officially broken up then it’s a different story. Ross was a douchebag and he cheated, plain and simple.
In Season 9, Ross and Chandler's roles are reversed when Chandler's alone with his flirty co-worker in Oklahoma: Monica: "Is she pretty?" Chandler: "Ah... um." Ross: "Answer faster. Answer faster." Chandler: "I don't know." Ross: "Answer better. Answer better."
That was a pretty hilarious scene. Thankfully, the writers were clever enough to have Chandler respond differently to Ross, rather than leading viewers down the same storyline again. Of course this was helped by the fact that Chandler and Monica were already married (not that that seemed to placate Monica).

Yeah, but as far as Ross knew, she had already had it going on with Mark. Remember the phone call. She dumped him (she admitted to Monica that they broke up!), and then, when they were on the phone, Mark - who had a crush on rachel, and ross knew it! - was in her apartment. Ross did something unexcusable, but it was not cheating and it was not worse than what Rachel did. They both had their 50% share of ruining everything.
You know when you look back throughout their relationship you can kind of understand where Rachel is coming from. I mean Ross was very clingy and he was always jealous of every guy she talk to you even though she had no interest in them, and all she really wanted was some space, but instead of respecting that he went to sleep with another woman the same day they broke up. If you ask me that is a sign of a toxic relationship.

Ross wasn't perfect and he made mistakes but Rachel isn't blameless either. I get she was excited and loved her new job but she neglected their relationship and that made Ross paranoid and scared he was losing her he never felt good enough for Rachel and rather than reassure him all she did was get angry. Ross was right about Mark he was out to get into Rachel's pants and even Joey told Rachel that but she didn't listen. When Rachel said she wanted to take a break she called Mark why not Phoebe or Monica? And she let Mark into the apartment knowing full well how Ross feels about him and Mark speaking up in the background when Ross called isn't a good friend that's shit stirring. Rachel even told Monica they broke up then changed her mind when she found out about Ross and Chloe. Ross shouldn't have slept with Chloe but he was drunk, devastated and believed Rachel was with Mark hours after she ended their relationship he made a mistake. He should have been honest and told Rachel the truth rather than her hear it from Gunther that was wrong and there's excuse for that one. But when Ross moved on with Bonnie Rachel convinced her to shave her head to hurt and humiliate Ross and when he ended things with Bonnie Rachel rather than draw a line over their past and focus on the future tried to make Ross take all the blame and when that didn't happen she got pissed off. When he moved on with Emily Rachel got jealous again and went to London to tell him she loved him hoping he would leave Emily for her. Rachel is selfish, vindictive and jealous she's worse than Ross at least he accepted they were over and tried moving on but Rachel always fucked with his head she couldn't make it work with him but couldn't handle him being with anyone else.

But from a guy's perspective....unless the girl is married (and even then it depends on the woman), if you are friendly, charming, and good-looking, it's too easy to get a girl who is in a committed relationship to make a mistake. If the guy seems interested in you and you find him "charming but love your boyfriend so you won't do anything about it", why put yourself into a position to make the mistake at all? That's what Ross was worried about, despite his constant warnings about the guy, she kept hanging out with him - even going as far as to invite him up to her apartment for dinner right after she told her boyfriend she didn't just want a break to cool off and talk later but a break from their relationship. From Ross's perspective, her telling him that and then calling to apologize only to find out that she invited him over to her place right after she told him she wants to take a break from their relationship was essentially saying their relationship had no future and she was now willing to put herself in a potentially compromising situation with another man so Ross sought comfort from a rebound. What he should have done instead though is gone to her apartment, kicked the guy out, and asked if their relationship is over or not. That would have clarified the situation and then he would be free to have as many rebounds as he wanted.
All this began because Ross didn't trust Rachel and couldn't handle her working late. For those of you saying he was right about Mark, yes he was, but read the first sentence again. Compared to Chandler's coworkers who wanted to screw her, Mark was tame.

And he was the one being cheated upon, then stayed hung upon his failed marriage for like ever. That just doesn't line up with him having the mood to go to a strip club right after breaking up; that basically suggestz that he was ready to get over his relationship.
My entire issue with Ross was the fact that he was trying to cover it up, while also claiming he did nothing wrong because they were on a break!! Well if you did nothing wrong why u covering it up! That tells me u know u did wrong! Also lying to someone and covering it up is like assuming they are a fool!
What's so gross about Ross is how immaturely he took the "break" from a "break up" and not even trying to apologize the misunderstanding. He even justified with "to me, that is a break up" as an excuse to his actions.

Because he was convinced by Chandler and Ross. I encourage you guys to rewatch Friends because in Season 3, Episode 16, Rachel actually says that “we kind of broke up” to Monica the morning after. Yes Ross did something stupid but Rachel was not his girlfriend anymore AND she initiated this lovely break up. This was a serious scene but it had everything. Tears and humor. Rachel's sarcastic reaction to when Ross said, he did everything he could to stop Gunther from telling Rachel still makes me laugh. The real sad moment for me was the end of these scene, when Ross clings to her hips and won't let go and cries; "it can't be over" and Rachel doesn't move and says; "Then why does it feel like, it is?" (something along that line). This was the end of the romance that was Rachel and Ross - for me. They were never able to recapture that magic and innocence afterwards. Instead it just got toxic, when they were together or broken up or just around each other. This was one of the best and most memorable episodes.

At one point when Rachel shouts at him, Ross is sitting on the couch and he holds out his arm to make her stop saying more. He has this pained look on his face. Apparently they both had a thing for each other IRL but couldn't act on it as one or both were never single. Maybe they used those real feelings in their scenes.
They broke them up too soon. Had it happened few seasons later, them getting back together in the last season would've had more sentimental value, instead it just felt unnecessary as they barely had any romantic link for almost 7 seasons.
I don't even understand why this whole "On a break" thing is even debatable. It'd be heart-breaking to hear your ex sleeping with another woman just one day after an ACTUAL break up. Imagine it being just a "break".
I think Rachel felt suffocated in the relationship. She was finally doing something she loved with her career and Ross was trying to interfere for his own selfish needs. Ross was insanely jealous of guys who merely communicated with Rachel despite Rachel showing no signs of wanting to be with them, he was also controlling and shameless. Yes, they were on a break but that doesn't justify sleeping with another woman 3 HOURS after going on their break. And I wouldn't justify being slightly intoxicated either (he had like on beer).

Monica and Chandler weren't ideal, they fought a lot and belittled the other, sure this is a comedy and it's not serious but I never saw them as goals or even healthy

The one person who you absolutely didn't trust to be around Rachel, who you know liked her, who you fought about was right next to her. Of all the people that she invites to comfort her, you think she chose Mark. So of course you feel like shit. You don't feel acknowledged and you feel as though Rachel either doesn't care that you don't like Mark or is sleeping with him. You continue to drunk until you cant think clearly anymore. You are now intoxicated, feeling like shit, and clearly not in the right mindset. A girl starts kissing you but at this point you're too drunk to resist. Automatically assuming that your girlfriend saying she needs a break away from you for a while means that the relationship is over is completely ridiculous. He was smothering her and trying to control her life and friendships with other people and she rightfully said she needed to take a break from him, HE is the one who jumped to the conclusion that she must not love him anymore and wants nothing to do with him. He is incredibly arrogant and it was the downfall of the relationship. 3. If he had so little trust in Rachel that even hearing the voice of a man he was jealous of sends him on a spiral to go and cheat then they shouldn't be in the relationship to begin with. Rachel told Ross time and time again that Mark was just a good friend and that she had no romantic interest in him, it's not Rachel's fault that Ross didn't trust her. Even if someone DOES have sexual motives with your partner that they aren't picking up on themselves, it still shouldn't matter because you should trust your partner enough to know that they wouldn't even entertain the idea. He didn't wait and ask Rachel what Mark was doing there, he didn't give her the benefit of the doubt, he didn't give her time to explain (not that she even had to because again, Mark was a friend to her and she doesn't have to coddle Ross's insecurities), he IMMEDIATELY jumped to "Oh, Rachel's a hoe and immediately went to have sex with the guy she knows I don't like". Is that really all Ross thinks of her? If he has that little of an opinion of her then why be with her? Don't be with someone you don't trust. It is ENTIRELY his fault for automatically assuming she cheated, if he had taken 2 minutes to have a real conversation then this whole thing wouldn't have happened. 5. Again, you're making it seem like he was hammered but he really only had a couple of beers. If a couple of beers is enough to make him cheat on his partner (due to his own insecurities!) then he's really not as good of a guy as he tries to seem. And even if he WAS completely intoxicated, no amount of alcohol gives you an excuse to cheat. No amount of alcohol absolves you of your actions. He certainly has issues stemming from his trauma with carol which need therapy but he also acted out because he missed Rachel as she didn't balance her work and relationship. This is such a dumb argument. How do you know how many beers he drank? Did they show him drinking all the bears in real time? Also its not like he intentionally drank alcohol to use that excuse. He drank alcohol, got intoxicated and lost his sense of reason and slept with someone. Ross wasn't sober enough to think properly about how a terrible idea that would be or to resist. The girl took advantage of him. 6. Reminder that he was intoxicated. Idk if i have to explain more than this. You're acting as though Ross would've done the same thing while sober but if that were the case he would've slept with someone after they broke up the second time. Alcohol and low self esteem played a huge role in this breakup. Rachel was either completely stupid to allow Mark to come over or was just insensitive. If you want to blame alcohol for why Ross slept with someone else, then you can should also blame Rachel for not being considerate enough to not have Mark over.

This scene was so heartbreaking 😭 it's crazy how one's own insecurities can lead them doing the exact thing that they fear that their partner is doing and letting their selfishness ruin the one thing they love the most. Why do we act like that? So sad

Ross was not a dick. Even if you would have behaved differently, try to understand his perspective: Ross was crushed and in pain that the woman he's loved since high school just broke up with him and is sleeping with another man. People drink, do drugs, and have sex as a way to numb the pain.
I just realized how great the costume design was in this scene. Both Ross and Rachel start with the same color coat and then as their breakup progresses their coats come off. I don’t know if this was a conscious decision or not but it’s great.

Fashion hasn't changed much since the nineties. Every decade in the twentieth century was vastly different to the previous in terms of pop culture, music, entertainment and fashion, and the nineties was vastly different to the eighties. But from the nineties going forward into the millennium, the fashions have barely changed at all and the past two decades don't have their own identity as far as pop culture, entertainment, music and fashion.
How is he wrong? Rachel literally told herself that they need to take a break and then later told to Monika that they have broken up, but when confronted she keep denying that they were ever on a break.

The word "break" means to "separate" or "interrupt" so to take "a break from us" like RACHEL asked for means that SHE wanted to separate from Ross or interrupt their relationship. Ross did not cheat. i still can't forgive ross on pinning rachel as the reason they broke up and the reason why he slept with another woman. he was always gaslighting rachel.
The problem I find is that he refused to actually take responsibility for his actions, he was just randomly spewing apologies and other things he hopes she wants to hear and move on, like, it’s gotten to the point in that episode where he apologized, made excuses, tried to pin the blame on her and then resorting to begging, he was basically trying all tactics to move the power of the argument to him so she’ll submit and apologize for “overreacting” then proceed to go at it in the bedroom

1.) technically they werent on a break. when Rachel said "maybe we should take a break", ross leaves immediately, bringing the discussion to a halt. Rachel was left in the dark because ross stonewalled her, acting immaturely, and not given her a direct answer. 2.) even if they were on a break and got back together the next day, it doesn't make what ross did ok. it would make Rachel feel like she is replaceable to him, and thats a wound thats difficult to heal. so ross is using the we were on a break excuse as a technicality, just like Rachel said. 3.) a break means taking a breather from seeing each other for a period of time. not broken up 4.) he knew he was in the wrong because the next morning he ran around the city trying to cover up what he had done. therefore, he knew it would hurt Rachel
Trying to cover something up doesn't mean you did something bad he knew that she would be angry about and he wanted to get back together so he tried to cover it up they weren't together and he's obviously very drunk when he did it

Everything about this scene is pure genius. The script and acting of Aniston and Schwimer absolute perfection. The idea of having the rest of them listening and reacting to the whole thing to lighten up the heaviness of what was going on in the living room is just brilliant. A key scene in the whole series and could not be done any better.

It's crazy how the show coped togehter one of the most intense serious stories told (Ross and Rachel break-up) and one of the funniest (the gang stuck in the room). This episode is a great example, of why Friends is one of the best shows of all time.
It's also crazy how they kinds ruined that intense serious story to make it just a recurring punch-line...there ws so much scope of actual character drama, but I guess it would've felt dragged in a sitcom

Where Ross is Right: He technically didn’t do anything wrong since Rachel said she wanted a break from them. He broke no written rules. Where Ross is Wrong: It is not the accepted practice. If you break up with your partner it is not fair to sleep with someone else on that same day if you ever want to get back together with your partner. It’s just an unwritten rule.
I think it’s one those untold ‘moral rules’ like not being with your ex’s close relatives or something. Sure you’re a free grown up and can do whatever, but man is it tactless 🙁

He had nothing really to be sorry about. She asked for a break and she got it. The reason *sub plot* she is so upset is because she realizes it was HER FAULT. Ross would have remained 100% loyal to her had she not brought up taking a break.

Ironically, this scene Rachel is the one who says “WE WERE ON A BREAK”. And Ross says “I thought we were broken up”. But then after this episode, Ross is the one saying we were on a break and Rachel says they weren’t on a break lol
I think one of the reasons why is because the meaning changed afterwards. The first "we were on a break" represented taking a small break from each other, not breaking up. It was after this that I believe Ross started to see the "we were on a break" as a break-up and Rachel didn't. However, I could be wrong - but that may be why.

The writers decided it would be a funny gag to keep playing the "we were on a break" schtick - I hated it. The writers were definitely on Rachel's side since they completely re-wrote the situation to Ross being a whiny kid, but they never really focus on his side of the situation. He thought they broke up, got drunk, stopped himself from being stupid and called Rachel only to hear Mark's voice. At this point, he thinks it's completely over and can't stop himself from being stupid. I really hate how they handled this situation in later seasons.

Ross did something unexcusable, but it was not cheating and it was not worse than what Rachel did. They both had their 50% share of ruining everything.

Rachel even told Monica they broke up then changed her mind when she found out about Ross and Chloe. Ross shouldn't have slept with Chloe but he was drunk, devastated and believed Rachel was with Mark hours after she ended their relationship he made a mistake. He should have been honest and told Rachel the truth rather than her hear it from Gunther that was wrong and there's excuse for that one. But when Ross moved on with Bonnie Rachel convinced her to shave her head to hurt and humiliate Ross and when he ended things with Bonnie Rachel rather than draw a line over their past and focus on the future tried to make Ross take all the blame and when that didn't happen she got pissed off. When he moved on with Emily Rachel got jealous again and went to London to tell him she loved him hoping he would leave Emily for her. Rachel is selfish, vindictive and jealous she's worse than Ross at least he accepted they were over and tried moving on but Rachel always fucked with his head she couldn't make it work with him but couldn't handle him being with anyone else.

But from a guy's perspective....unless the girl is married (and even then it depends on the woman), if you are friendly, charming, and good-looking, it's too easy to get a girl who is in a committed relationship to make a mistake. If the guy seems interested in you and you find him "charming but love your boyfriend so you won't do anything about it", why put yourself into a position to make the mistake at all? What he should have done instead though is gone to her apartment, kicked the guy out, and asked if their relationship is over or not. That would have clarified the situation and then he would be free to have as many rebounds as he wanted.

This was a serious scene but it had everything. Tears and humor. Rachel's sarcastic reaction to when Ross said, he did everything he could to stop Gunther from telling Rachel still makes me laugh. The real sad moment for me was the end of these scene, when Ross clings to her hips and won't let go and cries; "it can't be over" and Rachel doesn't move and says; "Then why does it feel like, it is?" (something along that line). This was the end of the romance that was Rachel and Ross - for me. They were never able to recapture that magic and innocence afterwards. Instead it just got toxic, when they were together or broken up or just around each other. This was one of the best and most memorable episodes.

At one point when Rachel shouts at him, Ross is sitting on the couch and he holds out his arm to make her stop saying more. He has this pained look on his face. You see, despite all of that crap, they managed work as a team and thus, they were able to grow their relationship)
That's makes them a good representative of the Ideal one. not the perfect one (I could have said they are the perfect example of a perfect relationship but its far from the truth because first: theres no such thing as a perfect relationship-even God had issues with his relationship with Lucifer. Most people can’t do those things though. Usually the cheater enjoyed and doesn’t regret or understand why they devalue themselves as a person or the person can’t fully forgive the cheater or both. A cheater devalues themselves as their worth both as trustable person but as someone who can fulfill the role of being someones significant other. They’re worth as a romantic partner becomes nill if it gets bad enough

The one person who you absolutely didn't trust to be around Rachel, who you know liked her, who you fought about was right next to her. Of all the people that she invites to comfort her, you think she chose Mark. So of course you feel like shit. You don't feel acknowledged and you feel as though Rachel either doesn't care that you don't like Mark or is sleeping with him. You continue to drunk until you cant think clearly anymore. You are now intoxicated, feeling like shit, and clearly not in the right mindset. A girl starts kissing you but at this point you're too drunk to resist. Tell me where exactly is this sequence of events Ross's fault?

The entire reason they "broke up" in the first place was because Ross was incredibly insecure and jealous in their relationship and was interfering with her career all because he didn't trust his own girlfriend around a guy he didn't like. He sabotaged her and their relationship, he has no right to be mad that she wants to set some boundaries.
2. Automatically assuming that your girlfriend saying she needs a break away from you for a while means that the relationship is over is completely ridiculous. He was smothering her and trying to control her life and friendships with other people and she rightfully said she needed to take a break from him, HE is the one who jumped to the conclusion that she must not love him anymore and wants nothing to do with him. He is incredibly arrogant and it was the downfall of the relationship.
3. If he had so little trust in Rachel that even hearing the voice of a man he was jealous of sends him on a spiral to go and cheat then they shouldn't be in the relationship to begin with. Rachel told Ross time and time again that Mark was just a good friend and that she had no romantic interest in him, it's not Rachel's fault that Ross didn't trust her. It's also not up to Ross to say whether or not she's allowed to hang out with her friend simply because he thinks he has ulterior motives. Even if someone DOES have sexual motives with your partner that they aren't picking up on themselves, it still shouldn't matter because you should trust your partner enough to know that they wouldn't even entertain the idea. Ross is incredibly overbearing and possessive in any relationship he is in, which again, is the entire reason they took a break in the first place.
4. He didn't wait and ask Rachel what Mark was doing there, he didn't give her the benefit of the doubt, he didn't give her time to explain (not that she even had to because again, Mark was a friend to her and she doesn't have to coddle Ross's insecurities), he IMMEDIATELY jumped to "Oh, Rachel's a hoe and immediately went to have sex with the guy she knows I don't like". Is that really all Ross thinks of her? If he has that little of an opinion of her then why be with her? Don't be with someone you don't trust. It is ENTIRELY his fault for automatically assuming she cheated, if he had taken 2 minutes to have a real conversation then this whole thing wouldn't have happened.
5. Again, you're making it seem like he was hammered but he really only had a couple of beers. If a couple of beers is enough to make him cheat on his partner (due to his own insecurities!) then he's really not as good of a guy as he tries to seem. And even if he WAS completely intoxicated, no amount of alcohol gives you an excuse to cheat. No amount of alcohol absolves you of your actions. He could have been completely pissed-drunk but it's still his responsibility to be a decent person.
6. Sleeping with someone a mere few hours after you and your partner supposedly "break up" is a super shitty move, no matter what you think they did to you. Even if it really was a complete breakup. If the thought of immediately sleeping with someone else even crosses your mind at all that early after breaking up, it just shows the type of person you are. Ross tries to paint this picture of him being madly in love with Rachel and thinking the world of her but is that quick to go and enact some type of revenge on her for something he had no proof she even did? Ew.

He certainly has issues stemming from his trauma with carol which need therapy but he also acted out because he missed Rachel as she didn't balance her work and relationship. It was definitely something they should've sat down to discuss but Rachel wasn't patient enough and decided to suggest a break. I can somewhat understand her situation so I wont criticize it entirely.
2. This is not a rare assumption. A lot of people can agree the way she worded it made it seem like she wanted to break up.
3. He asked who was there and she lied to his face saying "no one" until mark spoke again. She knew herself that it would be a terrible idea to mention that Mark was over. She should've said no to him coming over but talked to her over the phone. It's extremely insensitive to just allow him to come over right after a break up knowing that Ross had his issues with him. Ross was entirely right to not trust Mark btw. Who would be comfortable with their girlfriend potentially being hit on by someone else?
4. Again, the fact that she lied about having no one over is pretty incriminating. Its very suspicious. He was also in a terrible mood so clearly he wasn't going to assume the best.
5. This is such a dumb argument. How do you know how many beers he drank? Did they show him drinking all the bears in real time? Also its not like he intentionally drank alcohol to use that excuse. He drank alcohol, got intoxicated and lost his sense of reason and slept with someone. Ross wasn't sober enough to think properly about how a terrible idea that would be or to resist. The girl took advantage of him.
6. Reminder that he was intoxicated. Idk if i have to explain more than this. You're acting as though Ross would've done the same thing while sober but if that were the case he would've slept with someone after they broke up the second time.
Alcohol and low self esteem played a huge role in this breakup. Rachel was either completely stupid to allow Mark to come over or was just insensitive. If you want to blame alcohol for why Ross slept with someone else, then you can should also blame Rachel for not being considerate enough to not have Mark over.

I just realized how great the costume design was in this scene. Both Ross and Rachel start with the same color coat and then as their breakup progresses their coats come off. I don’t know if this was a conscious decision or not but it’s great.

1.) technically they werent on a break. when Rachel said "maybe we should take a break", ross leaves immediately, bringing the discussion to a halt. Rachel was left in the dark because ross stonewalled her, acting immaturely, and not given her a direct answer.
2.) even if they were on a break and got back together the next day, it doesn't make what ross did ok. it would make Rachel feel like she is replaceable to him, and thats a wound thats difficult to heal. so ross is using the we were on a break excuse as a technicality, just like Rachel said.
3.) a break means taking a breather from seeing each other for a period of time. not broken up
4.) he knew he was in the wrong because the next morning he ran around the city trying to cover up what he had done. therefore, he knew it would hurt Rachel

Everything about this scene is pure genius. The script and acting of Aniston and Schwimer absolute perfection. The idea of having the rest of them listening and reacting to the whole thing to lighten up the heaviness of what was going on in the living room is just brilliant. A key scene in the whole series and could not be done any better.

It's crazy how the show coped togehter one of the most intense serious stories told (Ross and Rachel break-up) and one of the funniest (the gang stuck in the room). This episode is a great example, of why Friends is one of the best shows of all time.
It's also crazy how they kinds ruined that intense serious story to make it just a recurring punch-line...there ws so much scope of actual character drama, but I guess it would've felt dragged in a sitcom

Where Ross is Right: He technically didn’t do anything wrong since Rachel said she wanted a break from them. He broke no written rules.
Where Ross is Wrong: It is not the accepted practice. If you break up with your partner it is not fair to sleep with someone else on that same day if you ever want to get back together with your partner. It’s just an unwritten rule.

@@chloeeng6811 not only did she cheat. She left him, took the kid and the house and pretty let her new partner constantly dog him even though he tried to be the bigger person. Carole was toxic af.
But that this problem to work on, and not an excuse. I was really jealous too at the beginning of my relationship and i realised it had to do with a lot of trauma, which i worked and still am working on, and it has gotten so much better and we even make little jokes about it. Ross could've learned something here but he chose not to.

Even if they were broken up, he is still in her life everyday, and sleeps with another woman the same night. Anyone would be hurt and it never seemed like he was sorry because he thought it was over.
He had nothing really to be sorry about. She asked for a break and she got it. The reason *sub plot* she is so upset is because she realizes it was HER FAULT. Ross would have remained 100% loyal to her had she not brought up taking a break.

See, the problem is: women think with their emotions instead of rationality. That's a big problem.
Here's a good scenario: YOu get into a fight with your bf. You get so mad, you break your grandmother's serving tray.
Then when you calm down, you blame your bf for the broken tray because he made you so mad you broke it. No, that blame lies completely with you. It's called accepting responsibility, women are very good at shifting that onto someone else.
@@annettearellano3487 I wouldn't even go on a break first then, she didn't try to figure out why he was acting so paranoid and that she didn't reassure him that she's not gonna be like Carol at all. I'd say they didn't get to the root of their problems and just blamed each for their mistakes. They both had different meanings of breaks also so naturally this would end in drama. This is why Monica and Chandler are fan favorites as couples.

I think one of the reasons why is because the meaning changed afterwards. The first "we were on a break" represented taking a small break from each other, not breaking up. It was after this that I believe Ross started to see the "we were on a break" as a break-up and Rachel didn't. However, I could be wrong - but that may be why.
@@genevievelyder4404 I mean, Rachel literally tells Monica in a future episode that they were broken up. The writers decided it would be a funny gag to keep playing the "we were on a break" schtick - I hated it. The writers were definitely on Rachel's side since they completely re-wrote the situation to Ross being a whiny kid, but they never really focus on his side of the situation.
He thought they broke up, got drunk, stopped himself from being stupid and called Rachel only to hear Mark's voice. At this point, he thinks it's completely over and can't stop himself from being stupid. I really hate how they handled this situation in later seasons.
