      Then you're an idiot, "just a waitress" was what Chandler wrote on his computer, not what Ross actually meant, Ross's point was that he and Julie had something in common because they were both palaeontologists, Rachel was just a waitress that had nothing in common with Ross. Rachel's issue here is that she's pathetic and overreacting, she took everything at face value and didn't give Ross a chance to explain, she deserves no sympathy whatsoever.

    • @Xinxy
      @Xinxy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      @@TheWinnie42 I don't believe this point was meant to be degrading in any way. Ross said it as a counter point to Julie being a paleontologist like him which meant that they would have a shared interest in their careers as well, while Rachel was "just a waitress" and they would have less in common in that regard. It was not meant to imply that Rachel has any less worth than Julie or him but he's trying to calculate "compatibility".

    • @danyvillarreal1340
      @danyvillarreal1340 2 ปีที่แล้ว +172

      @@Xinxy it’s the “just a” part that makes it degrading. She was just beginning to know the “real life” and she was trying. She didn’t have any experiences but to have everything handed to her, but she was trying, and he knew that. It could’ve been “different jobs”, “different interest”, but it was “JUST a waitress”, like she isn’t anything but that job, and that that job isn’t as important or good enough as his or Julie’s. From her perspective and having read all of the list, how that phrase is written just meant that she isn’t good enough. Maybe he didn’t mean that, but Ross has a tendency to belittle others because they aren’t as educated as he is, a mayor example is how he would usually act towards Phoebe when she doesn’t agree with a fact he knows.

But it's honest work! She could have married a rich guy and never needed to work but she wanted to be independent. She started from the bottom. Being a waitress was a con because the fact that Julie was palaeontologist was a pro (for Julie) as it gave her and Ross more to talk about - it was taken out of context in the list which simply said she was just a waitress (by the sound of it.)
      Ross felt that he was loosing Rachel when her career took hold, especially when Mark entered the scene - he's insecure, as he's lost out to an affair before, so he didn't want to risk another one. He handled it badly, but that's the storyline.

      If each had to be paired together.
      Chandler and Monica... perfect.
      Joey and Rachel actually have a lot in common and genuinely have fun together.
      Ross and Phoebe, I think Phoebe’s open mindedness and sensitivity could help Ross grow as a person. Because Ross is just awful. Unwilling to change, very manipulative, disrespectful of people, and selfish.
      Even with all that, Ross and Phoebe would have balanced each other in some way.
      But you know, if you had to scenario. Ppl should grow on their own, it’s no one else responsible but there is an argument that ppl do help you grow whether each part realizes or not.
      haha Ross and Phoebe are so opposite like Greg and Dharma.

    To have a job that isn't necessarily the dream, but gets you by is a very special thing and something to be proud of. To know that the people around you, especially the person you love most, see you as less because of that job, is truly heartbreaking. For most of us, our jobs do not define us, therefore, we shouldn't be judged by them. If they'd been in a stable relationship, perhaps, they could've talked about this and found a way to move past it, but they weren't and he shared this with his friends first which just makes it that much worse, so it would be very difficult in real life to come back from this.

    Just came from watching the clip where Ross shows Rachel how to use the laundry and I noticed something important - Ross and Rachel only seem to work when Rachel is new to the world of 'being an adult' and when she needs someone to guide her. Essentially, he has a lot of influence over how she is gonna navigate this new world and I feel like he likes that a little too much. When she starts forging a career and grows from being that ditzy girl with no experience and whose only personality trait seemed to be that she was beautiful, they had a lot of problems e.g. Ross cheating on her when they were on a break. Ross seems incredibly immature, even outside his relationship with Rachel - his two week relationship with Emily, his treatment of Carol and Susan during the pregnancy and even him owning Marcel.
    It's also why I like Joey and Rachel better. Joey only started liking Rachel when she was wholly independent, supporting her without doubting her and putting aside his own happiness to let her be happy with Ross, something Ross really could never do. Joey liked Rachel when she was independent, when she had grown into her own person and was comfortable making hard choices. Ross wasn't and it really showed, especially when she turned down her dream job for him.
    Also, fully feel like Ross and Rachel absolutely got divorced later down the line. Rachel never would have been happy and I think she would have woken up one day and realised that she was unhappy and then left him. They were so toxic and I hate that they ended up together.

    Really disappointed in Joey and Chandler here. Really. The list was Chandler’s idea and Ross only did it under pressure from his two closest male friends, who at 02:10 bailed out to save face when he needed them most. Nonetheless that doesn’t get Ross off the hook at all - his “just remember how crazy I am about you” was his way of trying to save face in front of Rachel when he knew how she would perceive the list upon reading it. It’s so easy to go with the “for heaven’s sake, the poor man’s been thrown into an unenviable dilemma following the message she left on his answering machine and now he’s trying to work out which girl he likes most, what’s she making such a big deal out of it for?” mindset, but that ignores that the whole concept of the list is the equivalent of comparing women, living breathing human beings, like deciding which computer game you’re going to buy, and that’s not human at all.
