    Just to clarify, Fragrantica purposely removed all the fragrances/brands that are considered “niché” but are owned by larger companies like LMVH and L’Oréal etc. This means no Parfums de Marly, Tom Ford Private Blend, Amouage, Creed or Maison Francis Kurkdjian, just to name a few.
    That’s why this list is missing a lot of the big names one would expect to be on there. They wanted it to be only true niche/independently owned brands. 👍🏻
    To compare, the top 10 the previous year was:
    1. Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
    2. MFK BR540
    3. Tauer L’air Du Desert Marocain
    4. Tom Ford Oud Wood
    5. Creed Aventus
    6. MFK Grand Soir
    7. Parfums de Marly Layton
    8. Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady
    9. Amouage Interlude Man
    10. Chanel Coromandel EDP
    So you can see it had a big effect, removing 8 of the top 10...

      OK thank you for that clarification Bella W which explains a lot about the results for 2022. However, I'm not sure about the reasoning behind this result or its inherent logic or equity. Shouldn't the results simply reflect the Fragrantica community's favourite fragrances rather than rendering certain fragrance-houses ineligible because of their perceived size, corporate structure or financial reserves? Once you get into that level of "pre-filtering" results, then it becomes all about politics, power and partiality rather than passion, 'pong' and performance! Imagine if a well-respected motoring magazine, such as Evo (who have an annual competition to elect the 'Car of the Year') arbitrarily decided to exclude all BMW cars from the competition because BMW had far deeper coffers than say, Porsche or Jaguar Land Rover! There'd be a lynch-mob comprising car lovers and petrol-heads formed in an instant because such an exclusion criteria was ridiculous and more importantly, would almost certainly reach an erroneous, biased and iniquitous result! I had no idea which brands are owned by which corporations, but just by sniffing and sampling the scents I *cancelled* brands such as PdM, MFK, Creed or Kilian, and especially Roja, because they smell crap, and are unfairly promoting their crap.

    I think Nishane scents are top quality to be honest. Same as what the votes say. I don’t know why some youtubers are sort of not loving it that much and would throw subtle negative comments towards the house. Maybe Nishane don’t give away as much free bottles as the rest? Idk

    • @HumblebeeRules
      @HumblebeeRules ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My thoughts exactly. I am now trying my 4th Nishane fragrance (Hacivat, Ani, Sultan and Wulong), and even though not all of them are my cup of tea, they all are absolute masterpieces, stunningly blended and lasting and projecting hours upon hours. For comparison I have Herod, it completely pales in comparison, it does not have even a half of the performance of Nishane freshies and it lasts barely a third of the time of Nishane Ani.

    L'air Du Desert Marocain is not a very easy fragrance to wear. When I first bought it I thought I was about to be blown away because of how everyone raves about it. My nose wrinkled when I smelled this as I thought "This is what everyone loves so much???" After a year or so of developing my nose I have come back and I finally see what can be appealing about this fragrance, but I still don't think it's a dumb reach masterpiece that is going to get you loads of compliments.

      I had to come back to my initial statement and make a change. I sprayed LDDM on again, but this time it was magnificent!! I couldn't believe it. This is the single "biggest jump" in my fragrance journey from really hating it at first to finally being able to smell and enjoy the entire fragrance. What the hell changed??? It's amazing how I smelled the same bottle, everything, and hated it at first, but now it smells amazing, just as I thought it should have the first time I smelled it. I'm going to test this on family members and see if they got that initial reaction as I did when I first smelled this. LDDM was very, very dry and was not enjoyable. Now, I get this sweetness from it that was not to be found when I first tried it months ago. Incredible how our noses change, or "mature" as they put it. I'm really mind blown by this outcome...Almost freaked out in a way. Is everything I smell just a lie? Makes you wonder...

      @miguelcardenas2413 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some fragrances that I love at first I hated then my brain starts putting pieces together like an puzzle and then by the 5 time I spray them I love them specially niche fragrances I equate them to falling in love there’s love a first sight but then there’s getting to know the fragrance better and your brain starts making sense of the smell and you’ll fall in love.

    Interesting to see which ones are most popular there. I was actually really surprised to see that first Frederic Malle on there. I didn't think that one was very popular at all. I'd rather hear about your top ten niche fragrances of all time, actually.
    Here's something related. I've been keeping track of every fragrance recommended on every list video I've ever watch in the few years I've been watching fragrance videos on TH-cam. Here are the top 10 most recommended niche fragrances from the channels I subscribe to:
    1. PDM Layton
    2. Creed Green Irish Tweed
    3. Roja Dove Creation E / Enigma
    4. Creed Aventus
    5. PDM Herod
    6. Guerlain L'Homme Ideal EDP
    7. Amouage Reflection Man
    8. PDM Carlisle
    9. Xerjoff Naxos
    10. Creed Viking
    11. (in case you don't count Guerlain as niche) Nishane Ani

    The voting works by combining the upvotes and the downvotes for a total score. Upvotes are given more weight than downvotes (to try and prevent trolls having too much power), so the fragrance that has the highest upvotes usually wins unless it gets a lot of downvotes as well, which hurts its total score.
    For instance, Oud for Greatness has a few more upvotes (12) than Au Coeur du Desert, but also has a lot more downvotes (44) meaning it ends up lower overall. 👍🏻

    • @bassacoustic1549
      @bassacoustic1549 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jen Chin probably Carlisle but it’s a try before you buy at the price point really. If you’re ever in London then Selfridges is a great place to try out PDMs at their counter.
      Layton is slightly more subtle and perhaps more easy for people to like, so that little bit safer. Having said that, I have noticed some people comment that it gives them a headache. I haven’t found that personally but have with Profondo & YSL Y EDP so some fragrances can certainly do that!
      Carlisle is one that if you’re fond of it you’re really going to love it. Quite heavy on the patchouli. For me it’s the better of the two.... I only own Layton but plan to get Carlisle.

    out of this list I don’t have Couer, Havivat, Portrait and carnal flower. Neither are styles of fragrances I gravitate towards. And I already have L’air so Coeur felt redundant.
    I think they’re all good and worthy to be there in light of the obvious omissions

  • @DivineFrag
    @DivineFrag 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    They do their voting with upvotes offset against downvotes or something like that. Their voting is way too easy to abuse though. If you went through the award winners, some no-name houses got in probably through manipulation. Didn't even need much in some categories - just 50 upvotes.
    As for the scents, Oud for Greatness - have it, I think this is fair to include in the top 10, even if it is recency bias. Hacivat - have it, I think the OG Aventus is better, but current Aventus sucks ass through a straw. Carnal Flower - haven't tried it, don't think it's top 10 though - just not popular enough, FM has more popular stuff. Ani - have it, top vanilla scent for most, it might be bordering top 10, but at #5 it's a bit much. Naxos - have it, basically a must have niche scent, very fair to include in top 5. Portrait of a Lady - don't have it, but I agree with this one since this is the popular women's Frederic Malle scent and it is tenured as well. Musc Ravageur - I hate this scent, but again, significant tenure and fair to include in top 10. Desert Marocain - haven't tried it, but I know it's very popular, fair for top 10, not sure about #1.
    Objectively, if you went based on how mainstream some scents are, the list should WITHOUT A DOUBT include Aventus, Layton, Baccarat Rouge, and maybe Reflection Man, Herod, Grand Soir, Elysium. I personally, again - trying to be objective here - would probably say the top 5 should be BR540, Layton, Aventus, Naxos, and Reflection Man. And this is much different than my personal top 5 which I think would currently be Alexandria II, Sultan, Nefs, Haltane, and Enclave.

    Also, not a single Creed, Amouge or Roja Dove! I mean, well done Frédéric Malle and Tauer for garnering so may likes but something wierd's going on here with a Fragrantica coterie, seemingly (to use horseracing metaphors!) either 'running in blinkers' or 'riding to instructions'.

    This list is suspect as heck. Layton isn’t in this list? It’s like the low end niche list IMO. My number one would be F&M The Parfum by Roja or Amber Aoud, Diaghilev, Chypre Extraordinaire, Enigma. Anything from Roja?? Wow. Frederic Malle has a few good fragrances however none of them were mentioned in this list. The Moon or Promise should have been on that list (anything from the Desert Gem collection anyway).

    Hey Chris! Deinitely would add some Rojas and some Zoologist, even a Parfum de Nicolai. The magical thing about perfume, and all arts for that matter, is that it's all subjective. Nice video as always! :)

    I don’t find Portrait of a Lady to be at all feminine with all the Patchuli in there. Off my skin I barely get any rose, just a beautiful Patchuli. Ani I think deserves to be in the list because it’s a nice light airy vanilla that is fresh and easy to wear.

    I recently bought sincere by ILK.. really love the scent profile and the way it has been built but the only concern is longevity. Being an parfum lasts only for like 3-4 hours 😅

    one would assume unisex fragrances have twice the demographic to vote for them; a contest like this would probably be better with a male and female category.

    Didn't it have something to do with likes vs dislikes? Perhaps the difference between the 2 had some part to play in the algorithm. Personally, I prefer the top lists on Parfumo (Perfume --> Top). They just seem to be more indicative of true popularity.
