Yes the genuine ones are overpriced but you have to remember that the companies pay millions to do research and development of these watches, the replica companies simply copy them, they have no innovation. There are also advertising costs, paying Swiss workers high salaries instead of Chinese low salaries, paying for advertisements, paying for high end machines and factories. The genuine watches will also be worth something in the future and for some brands like Rolex they may even go up in value, you can leave them for your children when you die. But the replica does give you 90% of the enjoyment for a fraction of the price of the genuine.

If you set aside the gold plating, diamonds and the rest of the flash, the old guard Swiss watches (Universal Genève, Rolex, Patek Philippe, etc.) are definitely superior timekeepers. One metric: they are each calibrated / certified by independent labs, for timing accuracy and repeatability. Rolex, in particular, makes watches that are exceptionally durable. The quality under the hood is very much there, vs mass market Swiss watches (which are still quite good) or Chinese clones. So, they do have their place. There’s also the investment angle, but that’s a separate matter. As a fashion statement, I say buy whatever catches your eye.
a fairly really good made replica watches can almost cost more then half of the original luxury watches. They are put together by watch makers and trying to mimic the real ones. The most important aspect of a fake one is making the movemengs look the same. They can likely make a replica watch about 80 - 90 percent the same as the original but by doing so, the price will be so expensive to make , it's not worth it for them to sell .
I personally don't own any replicas but I do have homage watches and one of my favorite homage is the steinhart 42mm.I love the design and look of many luxury watches but wouldn't mind a homage version with seiko or miyota or a cheap Swiss movement, as long I was getting the look (never been into the movements) I'm a car guy too , now that is something I want to the inside (engine performance) to be top notch and would pay accordingly.

As long as it tells the time and the one who gifted it to me meant well, I don't need an expensive luxury wristwatch. Besides, if it's real, it would end up with most of my actual heirloom jewelry locked at home anyway, I wouldn't risk wearing it in public or everyday.

I disagree somewhat. There's a level of "fit and finish" that a person can recognize depending on how appreciative they are of fit/finish IN GENERAL and for lack of a better term (and in no means am I trying to insult or disparage) he simply had a lower standard of what he felt "good/expensive watches" are supposed to be. As an analogy it's like with audio - people with sharper ears can hear the difference in audio quality even if they weren't familiar with the actual music they're listening to. It's that sort of thing. So not really his fault - but I'm of the sense that if you're trying to understand anything luxury - at the very least you need to have some sense of what makes an object exude luxury. He simply didn't have that sense. While there are super replicas that require you to check the movement to really know the difference.
