Yes dress codes matters even if it's a battle of the minds. Participants like Nakamura and Carlsen only concern themselves on going to the tournament and concentrate on their games. FIDE on the other hand does a lot of preparation so participants can perform at their best. So they will not make excuses about the playing conditions in the venue. FIDE manages security, logistics, looking for sponsors, hiring workers, equipment, finding the best venues, providing higher prize money for the players, marketing, broadcasting etc. Because FIDE also takes care of broadcasting the event. They just want to make it presentable and also professional to be at par with other sports. Majority seems not to appreciate what FIDE has done to promote chess. A simple dress code shows professionalism towards the game and the players look presentable on screen. Some say they are only interested on the games. They think it's entertaining just watching the board on screen for hours? They are only interested in the game right? I suppose I can speak with others that I don't want to watch just the board for hours even if it's Magnus playing a championship. I also want to see how the players look like, connect with what the players are thinking and feeling while playing the game. Having dress code gives importance towards the event. It shows sanctity of the game. FIDE holds tournaments at special venues not in malls. It's just proper to show professionalism and respect by adhering to dress code. It's not being tyrannical or backward thinking like most idiots are saying right now. It's just being professional period. FYI, NBA fined Michael Jordan $5,000 every night for not following their dress code. Besides, players can change clothes afterwards right? No big deal. They can showcase their fashion sense all they want after finishing their games. Its not like FIDE is requiring participants to follow dress code for 24hrs. Nakamura belittles the 70s. 70s era isn't that bad. Great music during that era. Hey Nakamura 70s is much better than being a narrow-minded crybaby. Players like you and Carlsen will come and go. FIDE will remain and continue organizing events even after both of you are dead. Without FIDE Nakamura and Carlsen will never be recognized. Carlsen will never be recognized as WCC without FIDE. It's FIDE that made Carlsen and Nakamura famous. At least thank FIDE for doing a superb job on marketing....
I'll go even further on this matter. Refund the penalty fees in total to Nepomniatchi and Carlsen followed (and to anybody else if fined too) by an apology from FIDE! The players rule! FIDE won't even exist without the players, period! Chess is a sport, not an office game!

FIDE going after freestyle? What do you mean ? It’s just the other way round. It’s Magnus going after FIDE over the format of freestyle. I expected this would happen. When you have a person that is widely followed around the world by millions of adoring children fans, many of whom probably complained to fide about Carlsen's ban no doubt would put pressure upon fide to cave in. They say, 'No one is above the Law' well that's certainly not true with Carlsen who has now shown that rules mean nothing to this so called 'Chess God' who is bigger than fide or it's rules. Shameful, would they had done backed down the same for Fischer? I don't think so.
Grow up FIDE - you’re still living in stone age! Let these young and upcoming chess wizards wear what they want as long as it’s decent! This is a mind game not a fashion show, for crying out loud!

Magnus had enough time to go back to his hotel and change. He refused to do so "on principle". The rules had been made clear to all players well before the tournament, and nobody had objected then, so I do not quite understand what principle Magnus is talking about. If FIDE had allowed Magnus to break the rule today, tomorrow some other player may have decided to break another rule. How do you decide which violations are to be punished, and which should be ignored? The only option is to enforce every rule strictly - that is the only principle I understand. The rule itself may be a bit old fashioned, and perhaps needs to be reconsidered. But the principle that all rules should be enforced cannot be compromised. Nobody is bigger than the game.
