In Singapore and Malaysia, it is legal to import, buy and own many different styles of EDC knives, including locking knives with no limits on blade lengths. No permits are licenses are needed.
However, there are certain knives that are prohibited (illegal).

Here in Canada we have similar laws except we don’t need a reason to have an EDC knife in public, I have been carrying a Victorinox tinker in a Victorinox belt pouch with the logo for years with no issue, I would still recommend avoiding anything with a blade above 3 inches and not entering a bar with an easily accessible knife on your person.
I also have a fixed blade knife (Cold steel mini-tac bowie) in my personal survival kit which should not be an issue because it is not easily accessible due to the zippers on both the front compartment of my backpack and the PSK then having to locate the knife.
Thanks for sharing! The ColdSteel is quite tiny so not too intimidating and sounds safe in the kit.
interesting information i often wonder about the laws in Malaysia (i`m a Dutchman living in Malaysia) because i nearly always carry a multitool.
You mentioned about you need a valid reason to carry a knife buut who decides what a valid reason is ?
I think in the end the judge will decide and all depends on his or her mood that day.
I can think of many reasons that are valid to me to carry a knife for example i love to eat apples but i dont really like the skin of some apples they can be hard or tough chew so i use myy knife to peel the skin. Now to me that is a valid reason a judge might think differently
I carry a multitool because it happens to me so many times when i`m out and about i quickly need to fix something or help others to fix something ( i once helped a guy on a bicycle with the pliers of my multitool)
Also i ride big bike and i consider my multitool as the tools that youu keep in the back of your car
All these are valid reasons for me but in the end the judge will have the last word on if this is valid or not
I wish there would be more clarity about legal or illegal and this is not only in Malaysia buut in my home country it is even more worse you could carry a knife thinking youu do it legally but in the end it is not legal because they created zones where it is illegal to carry or even have it in the trunk of your car.
So if you unknowingly drive in to such a zone and they stop you you will be in trouble

Thanks for watching. I think the person who makes the first determination would be the police officer who happens to do a check. This will most likely be due to a complaint and not random unless you are stopping doing another illegal activity (like getting in a fight or tresspassing). Otherwise, no one will ever stop you. I think most of your reasons are justified and valid except the apple, which is weak. And if it ever goes to a judge, a lawyer will be able to explain it. Mitigating circumstances would be the size of knife, style of blade, where it was kept (tucked in a waist band) or harder to access in a bag. Having said the above, I am not lawyer and this is not considered legal advice. 😅
@@urbanknifeguy i agree on what you say. I would not carry a threatening looking knife i dont believe in knife fights buut what i said about the apple you might find it weak but its the truth i like apples but many apple skin i dont like.

@willidevegt8831 I understand where you are coming from with the apple skin but I am not sure local authorities will buy it. I think it really depends on the size/design of the knife versus the apple. 😁

Hey Urban Knife Guy, nice video. I was wondering if it is okay to edc a sak like the bantam or Forester M grip in a small pouch with the intent to use it to open stuff like packaging or bottles, and cut some wood(when going camp or similar). Also, how are the customs in Malaysia for swiss army knives in luggage that will be checked in, is it a smooth process? Just asking cos I going Ipoh soon and I wanna know if there's going to be any issue. Again, great vid!
Thanks. All no issues. For MY, just have it in the check in luggage and there will be no issues even at customs. I routinely bring a suitcase of knives and parangs through.

Good stuff. I EDC my SAF issued Trailmaster. I work in rail construction/maintenance so I usually have a couple of other “tool” items as well.
Was randomly stopped at Changi once, I declared the knife, stated it is the standard SAF issue and was cleared to carry on.
Nice! You may not have been stopped randomly as they scan your bag once off the plane and "mark" it. But, yes, no issues!
Great Video thanks, your 'grey area' gravity comments worried me a bit, i live in Singapore and just ordered a demko ad20.5 from overseas. Would this get me into trouble? And if yes what would you recommend me to do? Report it beforehand?
Thanks. I don't think you really have to worry or do anything. The Shark lock in function is similar to the axis or button lock in how the blade is free when depressed. In my experience, 99% of SG police and custom officers are not familiar with knives. They are basically trained just to look for spring action. The unlikely worst case scenario is that you get a message to come down to the customs office at SingPost centre cos they have detained your package. Then you show them how the knife opens and closes and that there is no spring. Explain it is for your home collection only. Then you will leave with the knife. This has ever only happened to me once in 2007 for a pair of sais.
Hey, this was very informative thank you, would hiking in the countryside with a pack etc, be considered a "lawful reason"? I am also a knife afficionado and will possibly be living/ working in Malaysia. I do plan on only taking a Swiss Army Knife if permitted and also plan on getting out and about and experiencing the natural areas etc.
Yes hiking is 100% fine. Even if you bring a machete or fixed blade. The grey area would be after the hike. If you happen to take public transport or go to public shopping areas etc, and have the knives on you. So, I would just keep them well hidden in the bag and in the 1% chance you are checked then explain you went on a hike. Best to take lots of photos of the hike with meta data as proof! 😅

@@urbanknifeguy It was fine. They took me to police station & sent a knife to check if it can be considered a "cold weapon" And according to local law, even a Victorinox cadet is a terrible weapon :)
They saw a clip in the pocket when I was walking on a street. Ended up with a fine 50 usd. At least they returned a knife in a couple of weeks.

Any issues with a Kukri or Parang?
Not for EDC, but to own and to carry on outdoor treks/camping trips.
No issues but if traveling into Singapore, the blade should not be more than 12". The rule is no sword with a 12" cam be brought in through customs for travelers. But this rule does not apply to parangs. However, the custom agents do not know the difference between a sword and a parang. So best to avoid bringing in a long parang.
What type of knife do you carry for religious purposes and for which religion?
I personally don't carry knives for religious purposes as I am not religious unless the Religion of EDC is a thing. But Muslims might use a Kris for ceremonial use and a kirpan in Sikhism for Indians.

So I want to go bikepacking in Malaysia would it be feasible to bring my leather man skeletool with me, or too risky? I need the pliers etc but it does have a blade as well
