This happens because driving in ice creates a wave under the ice and if you’re going fast the wave eventually overtakes you if you slow down the ice cracks and down you go. Also because they scripted it and there was always a hole with water under the snow
The amount of times James crashed on this, honestly made me wonder if Hammond gave him a bit of his own luck
To quote Jeremy Clarkson after he flipped his own car:
“Now I know what it’s like to be Richard Hammond.”
Quite frankly, it thought they'd switched bodies at one point. Like some twisted Freaky Friday stuff.

This has to be one of the best bits of ingenuity from the team I've ever seen. When something serious goes wrong they always come together to help solve it

Doesn't matter whether its their idea of if the crew helped them, fact is, is that the car genuinely went into the lake and they got it out, who gives a shit other than you whether it's staged, partly staged or real? Ever saw ice road truckers?. Imagine going through the ice with a truck.and trailer. Ever saw once it was not allowed to wear ur seatbelt while driving on a frozen lake. Because, if it did happen, that the truck fell through ... they could jump out the truck, and not be strained, or blocked from the seatbelt that could take a few seconds to save urself before the truck is sinking, no?
The fact that James still believes in the Evo and it still kept going makes me speechless and in shock, now that’s respect

@@AtheistOrphan I think it's more because of how much experience Hammond has with crashing. Especially back in around 2008 when the Vampire Dragster almost killed him.
I was personally more scared with this crash than when James crashed in the tunnel. We knew about the tunnel, but not this one.
The tunnel crash was genuine but this is SOOO fake!

Also do you really think the production team would trust RH and JC to save May, by going off to chop down trees, meanwhile not one medic or emergency crew checks on May. Definitely not a set up if you look at James' immediate reaction. The whole rescue process was a bit protracted and scripted but he definitely broke the ice and beached it for real.
I feel bad for james having to clime out of the car on a broken rib, that had to hurt a lot.
Sometimes Hammond's genius generates more gravity than Clarkson's .

Poor James being soaked with freezing cold water as he struggles to get out with all the pain of s cracked rib. And he ignores all that discomfort to worry about the Evo. :)

As big a Subaru guy as I am, I have a new-found respect for the Evo thanks to this special. It crashed twice, the second time in icy water, and it was resurrected both times for James to finish the challenge.
Those Evos were absolutely incredible engineering. Shame Mitsubishi has never done anything like it since.

That's not the problem, water sends a ton more cold temperature into you than air does, so freezing water, even brief, can be lethal

I have never taken my car on the local lake because I am always paranoid about this. Not for my safety, but because I don't want to lose the car.
This segment was Final Destination times for James. Death was gunning for him for sure this time round.

The moment he went through you can hear how properly serious Jeremy and Richard took it. When they established James was going to be okay then they went back to joking about.
I could watch these three, in an elder care home, racing wheelchairs. All day long.

It's amazing how the car mechanics saved this vehicle.
That is why us here in Canada 🇨🇦. When going out ice fishing, in any vehicle. Roll your windows down, seat belts uncliped. Just incase you need to make an emergency exit. Comman sentence for most people.
Its funny how Richard fell in love with Oliver which was a yellow color car and james clearly developed a connection with the Evo which is also yellow. 😅 IMO that's what makes cars special. The moments you experience with the car regardless of whether it works or breaks down. Clarksons quote at the end was poetic about the Audi. A Quattro isn't just for Christmas. A Quattro is for life! So happy to see these 3 back at it again doing what they do best. Thank you all for a life time of memories. Its sad to see them burn by the fire of time but i guess we all have to age one day. Not 1 adventure where they haven't ever made it entertaining to watch.
Using the towball as a recovery point is insanely dangerous. Standing that close you’ll lose your head if it comes off.

Look at the evo’s whole shitty steering column move when he leans on the wheel 0:55. Tin can..
Hammond's camping experience really shines through in moments like these. The improvisation is impeccable!
James May has my deepest respect after watching this episode.

Protocol dictates that in a situation like this the two remaining lads abandon him and continue with the challenge. The fact they all worked together to not only save their friend but the car also is astonishing. These guys are getting soft.
If only they knew Finnish they would've noticed the sign that said "Pääsy Kielletty". Wich means "Do not enter".
Also speed limit is 80km/h, unlike Hammond said.

If I had a nickel for everytime James May crashed the evo, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice right?

I'm 90% sure the ice crash was faked. The tunnel one was real and there were tons of emergency crew. If this one was real and if James was actually in danger, there would have been a swarm of medics and crew making sure he got off the car.
Why would they put a poor man with already a broken rib crash trough that on purpose? They could have made the other two stooges go through if they needed to create drama..

I'll admit that even I didn't think *that* incident was staged or scripted. I refuse to believe that they would have JM crash through the ice on purpose - or even send the guys out there, hoping one of them would crash through. Much too dangerous. And perhaps that's why this sequence works so well: Notice how none of the guys are trying to "play their role" (loud oaf/absent minded pedant/Birmingham halfwit) here.

The "winch" was being turned slowly at a consistent rate, so why did the Evo get pulled out in large, sporadic motions? 5:50 🤔
Tension vs weight . Too much of one not fast enough build up of the other lead to yanks instead of continuous pulling

I assume there was no attachment point to pull it out from the front, if they needed to keep the engine out of the water? The back end was already in the water so pulling it from the back was always going to sink the engine.
Because they don't know how thick the ice is in front of the car. They know it will hold behind it because he drove it from that direction. In front of the car it could be thinner and by going infront of it could cause all the cars to go through
Considering james has been a victim of dumb towing mistakes youd think he wouldnt stand behind a ball hitch being used to pull a car out

Anyone see that James nearly died twice in this EP 1 he nearly went into the ice lake and 2 crashed at 70 MPH in that tunnel. Hes more Crashes in a single EP then hammond

This was definitely staged. My only question is if it was a real situation, what could have stopped the 2 from winching/pulling whatever conan the barbarian move they did there, but from the front instead of from the rear? Maybe suspicion of other parts of the frozen lake in the front could also have spots with thin ice?
You can tell they were expecting it with how slow they had become just before James went in the hole. A good skit, but little subtle things like that, if you know what to look for, are signs that it's set up. Which is obvious, yes, it's a TV show.....but maybe less subtlety in the future.

@@Rams8148 You're right, they just happen to carry chainsaws around with them for that one time they need it to cut trees down for a convenient winch and land in the only car-sized water hole in the whole ice field. Total coincidence. Happens all the time.
Reminder that James did all that climbing with broken ribs from the cave crash earlier in the episode
Weird... there was 3 car on the ice and just like a miracle there is a hole on the ice and same size with the car. Normally in lapland ice can be so thick than there is not even water under the ice.. can break easier but about 1meter thick ice is like a steel😆 .. sorry but that trick is used in Finland. Welcome to learn more how to survive in "Russian hell"
