A reminder to all dwarfs. Throwing axes are specifically only used for throwing. These are not melee axes the explosion will have you lose fingers and it is not covered by insurnace.
Well, technically, the axes don't explode, they'll just release a electrical discharge. Still, it isn't good for your nervous system if they discharge on you.
Impact Axes also have little DRG lights installed on them for higher visibility, which gives them another use -- hazard lights! Used them many a time to mark main tunnels, convenient escape routes or entrances to The Bunkie. Stab an axe into the wall, and it's like a permanent short-range marker point that marks a point in the dark until someone picks it up.
Another plus and minus for the Neurotoxin grenades: They can actually still work surprisingly well against the robots despite their poison immunity; when used in tandem with the flamethrower you can create a big fireball that can just take care of a whole bunch of machines at once. Also though... you cant see shit through them, theyre basically a smokescreen that hides the enemies while it kills them.
Them being a smokescreen is very BAAAD, since i can't look back at my would-be pursuers in the heat of a swarm song and observe them, slowly, painfull and ultimately pointlessly trying to crawl at me and at least dent my armor. It's a paradox to me, so much willpower and feral aggression, but what use is that in a decaying body pumping deconstructed proteins through alien cardiovascular systems barely understood by us, without purpose, the anomaly of life quickly extinguishing. So yeah, real bummer, would really love the see that more.
Usually it’s “when in doubt: Axes out” as drillers kit usually rewards time investment with a laundry list of debuffs and dot, with some more unreliable primary, Sludge pump. I mean sludge pump. Having a back up source of damage for when you’re just sitting, waiting, waiting, waiting, for your acid to kill a single praetorian. Uses the axes, thank me later.
another thing for the quick throwing technique: if you create a secondary bind for "switch to last weapon" on the same key as "throw grenade", you can do the quick throw with ease and just a single button.
Dang the segment for c4 fear and stun really opened up its use case for me. Never knew how much utility it really had until i played haz 4 from haz 3. It was the "heres my bigger sticky grenade from gunner" for the longest time as a greenbeard. But now... I see its both a sticky grenade, shield clutch (for fearing not on your teammates...), remote dreadnought, caretaker / dreanoughr phase skip, bunker, emergency dig, terraform or mining tool. The list goes on.. Thats a lot of uses for something a greenbeard like me looks on the surface level as "oh bigger sticky grenade, cool." Thank you for these vids, one of the most high quality content the drg community has to offer! Especially the lok1, betc and builds. So much variety and i love they're playable as mods for the game. Looking forward to your next videos!
Oh boy, am I glad to have been up at 4 in the mornin' to see this! Thank you for the visual aid of how large a range the Stun of the C- Satchel charge affects. I'mma try that out! :)
one good thing to note, satchel charges give you two per resupply if you have one of the ammo upgrades now. This is a relatively recent change, but imo it means that taking both ammo upgrades is not very useful
9:03 You forgot the biggest con: they block sightlines. I'm also surprised you didn't bring up the C4 ammo issue. C4 used to not round up ammunition on resupply, meaning it was better to take either both ammo upgrades, or neither. GSG fixed this issue in season 4, so now it's the opposite: taking both ammo upgrades means that you only get one extra C4 for the entire mission. So now it's better to take the damage on tier 1, and ammo on tier 3.
I guess I didn't really think about it, its never been an issue for me since I tend to use all my C4 to the point of getting them all back frequently with resups. As for the sight lines, I did neglect that but again I think its just never really been an issue for me and my team unless you're dealing with Rivals or maybe a menace out of view. The other bugs have a hard time getting to you otherwise.
Thank you Siirvend. Back when my beard was green I'd use all the driller nades, willing to experiment and find the best situations for each. As time grew on, and hours went from tens to hundreds, I became disillusioned, adopting the motto of axe supremacy. I'd fall back on their ease of use and complementation to driller's kit at large, believing them to be the only worthwhile grenade no matter the build. While that may potentially still be true, you have inspired me to return to my roots and really try out the other options again. Don't get it mixed up though, I just want more ways to kill scout.
I used to take the 2 sachel charge ammo mods every single time, but now i can recommend against that, since ammo received at a resupply rounds up you get 2 charges even with 3 total and the extra range is looking really tempting now. (With 4 max charges you basically only get one extra at the beginning of a mission)
Oh I totally get that, I might be stuck in my old ways before they made resupply round up for satchels. I do tend to use them in danger close scenarios though so that extra radius kinda bites me in the ass when I try to toss one out in front of me haha
In regards to axe canceling, while I used to do the simple pickaxe cancel method, it turns out that a faster method has you holding pickaxe/laser pointer then holding grenade after. After you release the grenade immediately release whatever you’re using to cancel then repeat again. I had to spend a while in haz 1 practicing to get it right, and there’s better guides on YT out there, but as long as you have (good ping and) some axes to spare the burst damage is beyond belief with how quickly you can empty your supply. Also something that was almost shown in this video that works with so far I’ve discovered sludge pump (others may exist), but you can actually block dreadnaught fireballs by shooting at them midair if you don’t have enough room to dodge or feel like showing off to a teammate Now onto more eldritch collision techniques, we all know about the mysterious floating C4 if it lands on terrain that is destroyed after, or placed on Dotty while she’s moving as a trap for the following bugs, but there’s a reliable way to get floating C4 no matter where you are. An old method was throwing an axe at it midair, which does work depending on ping, but when the netcode isn’t in a good mood sometimes that axe is like a pencil you dropped during class in 5th grade, disappeared never to be seen again. However (on accident) I found the same technique is replicable simply by tossing a normal flare the moment you throw the C4, and the C4 now will float where the flare passed through it, letting you save more axes from going to the back rooms when you aren’t hosting the game.
Some notes about the Satchel Charge. Firstly, let's talk resupply. The Satchel Charge rounds *down* on resupply rather than up. So if you take any ammo upgrades, you should take both ammo upgrades so that you also get +1 satchel on resupply. It's not really worth taking only 1 ammo upgrade for 1 total satchel for the whole mission. Second, enemy stun resistance vs fear resistance works differently, and that can majorly impact your choice. Stun resistance is a % reduction in stun duration, while fear resist is a % reduction in fear change. The satchel has 100% base chance for both, so anything vulnerable to stun will *always* get stunned, while any fear resistance can sometimes cause an enemy to completely ignore the fear.
Very good points. The fear is only really reliable for smaller enemies combined with CC to take advantage of it, like with neurotoxin. I default to stun usually unless the mission in mind will have me defending with slows and DoT like with escort.
I totally get that, it makes sense most people prefer axes and in a vacuum and especially in solo they compliment his weapons well. I do still think his other throwables are severely misunderstood by many. Even if they accomplish a similar job to his louadouts, in a team setting there's much more incentive to specialize and even more so to save ammo since that can be the silent killer for chaotic situations. A driller with his cleave and CC on call when everyone else is low van absolutely save the mission.
@siirvend I'm a bit slow getting comfy with it because I had a hard adjust going from plats to drilling tunnels as a maneuvering option. n.n' Finally starting to get there though.
A combo that wasnt mentioned is making a floating satchel using axes (if its still in the game). You toss a satchel up into the air and then hit it with an axe & it will float in place. I mostly use it on escort where i dont want to make a big pit for my team to cross on extract, as well as the charge covering more of the tunnel by being in the middle instead of to one of the sides.
Theyre definitely worth trying out! I personally swear by the crowd clear of his other grenades when axes aren't the obvious choice. Its just hard to swap off axes since like I said, there's never a BAD time to bring them lol
Volatile Satchel Charge has no downside. Teammates accidentally hitting your midair C4 with a single pick swing because you were trying to save everyone some time on an ore vein is both hilarious AND optimal.
Gonna be honest, HE is my favorite for a reason I can't explain, even to me (probably what most gunners feel with clusters). On that topic, you don't have to throw it despite the timer on it. A simple laserpointer or pickaxe cancel and you put the pin back in (just don't ask me how you do it with one hand).
The satchel charge is, in fact, not c4, it is repurposed mining explosives. DRG has a ton of it, but hoxxes cave systems can't handle large-scale blast mining, so this was the second best use for them. Driller can only use them because he actually has qualifications to use them legally. How he GOT those qualifications can be brought into question.
Useful but seemingly obvious fun fact: the neurotoxin grenade has the highest capacity for friendly fire as the explosion effect for igniting it is NOT affected by friendly fire. So many deaths...

I really wish grenades had some mod customization. HE Grenades would be 10 times more fun if it had option to replace annoying timer with explode on impact. Also, a digging radius mod like on c4~ i mean satchel charge, would be very cool for hard to reach places. Sort of alternative for that EPC secondary with Thin Containment Field
the light on the axes only turns off if you are host, not as a client. or my games just buged. highly confusing and anoying when i try to pick up my axes that i think are still active but they are not. also as a tip for dorry missions as driller, while she is drilling tunnles though walls throw a c4 on her ass (right about where her button is) and itll float there in the center of the tunnle shes digging with bugs trailing behind, time it well and u can clear a few bugs with ease.
I've been maining Driller since the start and my best pick will alway be the Cryocannon and HE grenade, the cryocannon is alway useful due to it high+strong crowdcontrol and the HE grenade is very good once you get the timing right, imo Driller should focus on wave control to give other classes more breathing room to focus on stronger target.
Scout here It's not my fault you detonated that death trap right as I was zipping past, so I'm sure you won't mind paying for the leg surgery caused by it? Union says they can't get the company to pay for it, figures.
So i don't really use the axes. I'm a driller main and just got past gold but i much prefer the toxin and h.e.. it also was only recently that i started playing around with the cryo cannon. I know. Blasphemy. What I've started doing with the rippers is when I'm digging a tunnel I'll dig to the side, extend that out a bit and then I'll dig to the other side to make a sectioned off hallway. Throw the ripper in there when the bugs come in and they out of that section. The fear on the c4 shows that the fear effect comes from you. You can see this if you dig a tunnel bunker (see a pattern here?) put a charge at the front and then set it off when they are close to you. They will turn around and run for the exit even though that is where the explosion was. Rock and Stone
@@siirvend as far as I can tell. C4 I think it's one of the only placeable fear items. That's what it seems like to me. I play on console if that makes a difference.
For some reason, rippers count as explosives, making them weak against tank enemies and not giving you health from vampire. One of the biggest design mistakes in the DRG tools manufacturing department
The HE grenade would be alot better , if there wasnt this weird cap of how much armor can be stripped from a singular explosion. If one well timed grenade could strip a praetorian of all its armor , I'd probably swap from the super fun and dangerous saw grenade
That's what I've heard personally. I don't equate them personally but I think a lot of people see "sharp metal object that I throw to kill bugs" and make the comparison.
If you want to add even more chaos to your Mission Control lineup, try out the Intern Team. I've been running it along with Passive Aggressive, You, and Chaotic Mission Control for a while now and its an absolute mess 😂
@@siirvend I'll have to give those two a look. I've still been trying to get DRG to run decently well despite the fact i'm stuck on a laptop...Having to play with an FPS cap of 30 to avoid input delays has been unpleasant, but i've learned to tolerate it. And while MCR has done wonders for vanilla performance, the larger caves and custom assets have kind of counteracted that for me...But thats just what happens when you have sub-par hardware. Plus, I was going to write a guide on Steam for solo Hazard 5, but steam is being very uncooperative and giving me errors whenever I try to update pages...So infuriating. Anyway thank you for coming to my TED talk, Rock and Stone!
Axes would be my favorite grenade, but I tend to play in random lobbies, and like 50% of hosts have bad enough internet that I can't hit anything with them. Like, I'll hit a target with an axe, but the axe won't do any damage and just act as if it hit terrain, floating midair.
The reason everything outside the axe sucks is because crowd control is 100% covered by driller's primaries already. I mean they aren't useless, just significantly worse than the axe.
I think it comes down to covering your own or your teammates weaknesses. Axes serve Driller best when isolated but his other grenades greatly help out his allies. Throw a neurotoxin next to a scout who's dealing with 50 swarmers and he's happy with or without you being right there next to him.

HE Grenades would be 10 times more fun if it had option to replace annoying timer with explode on impact.
Also, a digging radius mod like on c4~ i mean satchel charge, would be very cool for hard to reach places.
Sort of alternative for that EPC secondary with Thin Containment Field
Do you take inspiration from Ahoy? You guys have a similar editing style and thumbnails and delivery
I do! Ive been a fan of his for a long time so it's no wonder my stuff ended up looking similar
@siirvend I think you're doing a great job I'm glad someone with the same quality can cover such an awesome game :))

Me when the flag of my barely mentioned country is seen on a funny space dwarf video:
Where flag?
@@siirvend it's the flag of Bangladesh. It's on the left she of the screen
Think of Japan's flag but the red is dimmer and the white is dark-ish green
I didn't mention it (I forgot) but it's on the thumbnail
@@ranjitsharma5811 oh no way haha, those colors are really close too!
I love the thumbnail
That opening was....sth
the light on the axes only turns off if you are host, not as a client. or my games just buged. highly confusing and anoying when i try to pick up my axes that i think are still active but they are not. also as a tip for dorry missions as driller, while she is drilling tunnles though walls throw a c4 on her ass (right about where her button is) and itll float there in the center of the tunnle shes digging with bugs trailing behind, time it well and u can clear a few bugs with ease.
Ah that client thing may explain people ignoring axes as often as I see. Im usually the host.
I love to play engineer, but I just can't stand to see anyone miss use driller, it's just the best class for who use them correctly.
He's so misunderstood. And I'm not talking about his propensity for team damage.
Totally axeptable
Q + G is faster than laser pointing

explosive place
The red shield is my favorite! It seems to be bugged tho, it doesn't block any damage for some reason?
Keeps the bugs away all the same!
"Explosi-"
When Driller met Mr.Torgue again?
They'd be good friends
The axes also instakill the tentacles of the caretaker if you hit the head
the q on my keyboard:
Imagine if the ripper counted as melee damage. The vampire proc on a crowd of frozen bugs would pretty much be a full heal.
Yeah right? Maybe that's why they didn't make it like that
That's it I'm a driller main
As you should be
@@siirvend I'm a scout I'll try
Scout here
It's not my fault you detonated that death trap right as I was zipping past, so I'm sure you won't mind paying for the leg surgery caused by it?
Yo no way, it originates from the player?? That changes everything
@@siirvend as far as I can tell. C4 I think it's one of the only placeable fear items. That's what it seems like to me. I play on console if that makes a difference.
You're awesome mayn >:D
For some reason, rippers count as explosives, making them weak against tank enemies and not giving you health from vampire. One of the biggest design mistakes in the DRG tools manufacturing department
That does mean they absolutely destroy slashers though
The HE grenade would be alot better , if there wasnt this weird cap of how much armor can be stripped from a singular explosion. If one well timed grenade could strip a praetorian of all its armor , I'd probably swap from the super fun and dangerous saw grenade
Is there really a cap to the armor break? Even so, it usually get the big back plates off the praetorian which are the ones I care the most about.
@@siirvend I know it's like 80% of the armor shredded , but danm if I cannot stand seeing a near perfect nade not strip a pred. To its birthday suit
Now that I think about it I don’t remember team killing someone in at least an hour
I think it’s time to change that
The urge grips another once more
Are axes the obvious comparison to rippers? I always thought of them like the HE's quirkier cousin
That's what I've heard personally. I don't equate them personally but I think a lot of people see "sharp metal object that I throw to kill bugs" and make the comparison.
2:40 ,alright guys, what's that mod called 🤣
It's in the description! Flip off animation for salute. Or something like that
@@siirvend thank you
If you want to add even more chaos to your Mission Control lineup, try out the Intern Team. I've been running it along with Passive Aggressive, You, and Chaotic Mission Control for a while now and its an absolute mess 😂
Oh yeah those guys are great. I have every shout framework mod on so I'm familiar. I also have Wyatt and Solaris on too.
Anyway thank you for coming to my TED talk, Rock and Stone!
i REALLY want grenade perks
that would be interesting
Axes would be my favorite grenade, but I tend to play in random lobbies, and like 50% of hosts have bad enough internet that I can't hit anything with them. Like, I'll hit a target with an axe, but the axe won't do any damage and just act as if it hit terrain, floating midair.
Thats why I end up hosting lol
The reason everything outside the axe sucks is because crowd control is 100% covered by driller's primaries already. I mean they aren't useless, just significantly worse than the axe.
I think it comes down to covering your own or your teammates weaknesses. Axes serve Driller best when isolated but his other grenades greatly help out his allies. Throw a neurotoxin next to a scout who's dealing with 50 swarmers and he's happy with or without you being right there next to him.
