Virtual Boy on 3DS but now running at accurate 50HZ output

  • Sometime in late February there was an unofficial Virtual Boy emulator known as Red Viper made for the 3DS and one of the main selling points is enabling 3D support without the need to wear 3D glasses and not having to deal with the red palette strain as it's possible to set it to black and white just like a Game Boy.
It was until only very recently this week that Version 0.93 of Red Viper has made the 3DS output at 50hz which matches the Virtual Boy's video output, yep read that part carefully, Virtual Boy isn't 60hz but 50hz instead.
I originally tried recording it using Loopy's 3DS Capture software but setting it to 60fps causes a 60hz output which means after the first 5 frames the 6th frame is a duplicate of the 5th frame meaning 50hz input (recording) + 60hz output (playback) is a no no.
Then I found out that by using FRAPS instead it's possible to set the recording output cap to 50hz which means it's possible to record Virtual Boy content from a 3DS without video issues, so it will look smoother as there won't be any duplicate frames. The only downside is that FRAPS isn't as stable than the 3DS Capture recording feature as it did drop some frames on Virtual Boy Wario Land, then again this one was a lossless raw recording.
I played 6 games that according to the compatibility list on Github are considered to be PERFECT without any game breaking issues. Two of them are homebrew games and it makes me wonder if you can nickname Virtual Boy as a Super Duper Game Boy when using the black and white palette.
    Featured games:
    Virtual Boy Wario Land
    Mario's Tennis
    Panic Bomber
    Space Squash
    Homebrew: Hyper Fighting
    Homebrew: Elevated Speed
Red Viper will be the most accessible emulator on a easy to hack console as it can take advantage of 3D effects... if you're not playing it on a 2DS/new 2DS XL.

Since the Switch doesn't support 3D..it'll be an eternity for an official emulator release to support 3D effects.

Nintendo has an opportunity to do the funniest thing with the Labo VR headset.

There was a remake pitched but it was rejected.

@@ikaguraI remember hearing about that, yeah, that info was leaked around the same time as the link's awakening remake was, right?

@@saladplainzone I think. Shame they didn't just allow that... I would've bought it.

So does this only work with a capture card, then? From reading the description it sounds like there's no way to get the 3DS screen to display in 50Hz.

Fair question, the screen from the 3DS system does change to 50hz.

I find it interesting it can change, always thought it was locked to 60 @@Greenalink
