Willam Wallace's father was Alain Wallace and he wasn't a commen farmer. He was a middle class knight. William himself was well educated. He was to be a priest but after his brother and father were killed Wiliam moved with his mother to live with their relative an uncle who was a priest himself and there William learnt archery etc. French was his home language by the way. Most people do not understand that The Brave Heart in this movie is the king Robert The Bruce who indeed is called as The Brave Heart.

@@johnsheehan7770 I think it's more of a trust thing on who they think will deliver better on the economic front, after all, the EU has a proven track record of developing its members, whereas Scotland is actually one of the poorer countries for its size compared to other western European countries around the same size, and the point being, what is the UK doing for Scotland to be falling so far behind other countries around the same size in Western Europe? The main connection is the UK union which as we know, the south matters far more than the north.
To put it another way, the UK union doesn't seem to be doing that well for Scotland, and for that matter, Northern Ireland and Wales as too much resources is kept down south of the UK.

According to court records of that time, William Wallace actually did say those words, about longshanks not being his king, and therefore didn't agree with the charge of treason.
William Wallace was 'hanged, drawn and quartered' and beheaded.
The movie audience was spared the details of the ordeal William Wallace had to go through, on the day of his execution.
First, He was dragged naked by his heels behind a horse to the execution site, at Smithfield, London.
First he was hanged, and before losing consciousness, dropped down to the ground.
Then, The 'rack' pulled all the joints out of their sockets.
After that, while still alive, his genitals were removed, cut out, and thrown in a fire before him.
Then, while still alive, his abdomen was cut up, and his entrails spilled out, and were removed, and thrown into the same fire.
The executioner then cut out Wallace's heart, and then William Wallace was beheaded.
Finally, the executioner quartered William Wallace (cut off his arms and legs).

Mel Gibson is Australian. This is my favourite movie ever, I think I have seen this over 25 times, because I'm Scottish, and I live only 7 miles from where William Wallace is supposed to have lived. This is very loosely based on the life of William Wallace, high protector of Scotland, and not everything in this movie is true, he never had an affair with the princess of Wales, as she was only about 10 by the time Wallace was invading England. I am 51, and cry at this movie everytime I watch it.

One of the many blatant inaccuracies unfortunately, one of the most glaring being the fact the kilt wasn't worn or even invented in the 13th century. You know you're in for a treat when the film gets the date of the death of the King of Scotland (the main catalyst of the wars of independence) wrong in the opening exposition.

I'm an Aussie of Scottish heritage and this is a very moving film
However I'm an historian and the historical inaccuracies in this are wild
Not the least because Isabella was only 3 at the time and could not possibily have got pregnant from William Wallace
The first battle was actually Battle of Stirling Bridge - actually, as the name suggests takes place around a bridge... which does not feature in the film.
Andrew Moray was co-commander - but he is not in this film. He died as a result of his wounds.
The last battle - with Robert the Bruce is Bannockburn in 1314 and was a two day battle, not a single charge

Yeah *it's not a documentary,* it's a movie with a plot based on a true story and amalgamating various Scottish legends, tales and characters that are out of place and time. However, it's an astonishing piece of cinema, and the simplistic elements of the plot - occupation and overlording by the English, the rise of the rebellion under Wallace, the Guardian title being bestowed, the defeat of the English army twice, the second one in 1314 leading to restored independence, all of that is true.

Unfortunately the only part of this movie that is true is that there was a man called William Wallace who won one battle against the British by employing certain tactics regarding a choke point at a bridge. There is no evidence to suggest that the practice of prima nocte (Lord's first night with a bride) was ever practiced in the British Isles. No information is available regarding Wallace ever being in a romantic relationship and he never met the Queen of England, let alone slept with her. It was a well crafted story to make the audience feel a certain way and this story would be rather popular with the Scotish and Irish diaspora around the world. If they just told his story as it sits in the history books, the film would only last about 20 minutes max. Mel Gibson grew up in Australia. If you watch his first successful international film "Mad Max", you will notice he has a pure Aussie accent. He follows a similar formula in other movies like "The Patriot", where he tries to portray the enemy as being pure evil to tap into the audience's emotions.

Ket, your responses are all in your eyes. You are the perfect example that, "the eyes are the windows to the soul." The two of you make a perfect couple. Keep up the good work.😊❤

@@slawaboga1433prima nocta, first night, had nothing to do with religion. Epic poem of Gilgamesh even spoke of it but there is no consensus on whether it really happened. That's beside the point though, invading/controlling forces always r*ped those they subjugated, still do.

    "FREEDOM!"
This film is historically inaccurate to the point of being insulting. Robert The Bruce is done wrong here. I honestly suggest watching the History Buffs review of this movie at how outrageous historical figures and events are betrayed here. I mean, the Battle of Stirling Bridge has NO bridge. Robert The Bruce and the Battle Of Bannockburn is infinitely more interesting than William Wallace in my opinion.
You can still enjoy the film as a product of pure fiction (I do) and it's an incredibly well made popcorn flick.
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Mhairi Calvey.
Extra Extra Fact: Several major battle scenes had to be re-shot because extras were wearing sunglasses and wristwatches.
Casting Notes Fact: Mel Gibson initially turned down the role of William Wallace, as he felt he was too old for the part. However, Paramount Pictures would only finance the film if Gibson played the lead role, so he agreed.
Movie Magic Fact: Mel Gibson was investigated by an animal welfare organization, which was convinced that the fake horses used were real. Only when one of Gibson's assistants provided some videotaped footage of the location shooting were they convinced otherwise.
Real Fighting Fact: Up to 1,600 extras were used for the battle scenes. Most were members of the F.C.A., the reserve Irish Army. Different companies usually come from the same area, and rivalries are common. Apparently some of the battle scenes are far more realistic than intended, with rival companies trying to beat the lard out of each other. That said, the worst injury suffered on-set was a broken nose.

jonkerr7667 ...It must be stated. This movie is the absolute worst at getting anything right. I get some creative license when telling a historical account, but this movie rolled a perfect 100% Inaccurate rating.
Now, you can still enjoy this movie. As long as we realize it's pure fiction, we can have fun.
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍

@@jonkerr7667 That is true, the director said he wanted to capture the "feeling" or something to that effect. Doesn't really explain how you get the date of death of the King of Scotland wrong in the opening minutes of the film or completely omit Stirling Bridge from...The Battle of Stirling Bridge, not just that it's in the name but it's the only reason the Scots won the battle, the way the real battle is described would have fit well in the film and made for an excellent on screen battle imho. Such a shame because this is the same guy who made We Were Soldiers, a fairly accurate account of the first soldiers in Vietnam and a stellar film.

    History, not accurate.
But amazing movie. And because most history videos don’t want to tell you this. America had to fight the same feudal oppression country. And kicked their ass.
The fight for freedom and individual right can win. It takes perseverance.

Without French assistance, America would remain a colony. because the English military power was greater. The rebels did not have the Prussian military preparation to win against the English.

Could they make their shields a little bit bigger?
Yes, but then, carrying them to battle would be a problem. It makes me think of the old question can God in his infinite power make a giant rock so big that he can’t lift it?
