As a fluent Spanish speaker and a basic French reader, ли should be easy to remember because "if/ whether" is pretty close. In both languages, it's "si", but it's positioned before the uncertainty like in English. Russian grammar is occasionally reminiscent of romance language grammar, other times it can resemble English grammar, the rest of the time it makes my head spin. 🙂🙃🙂🙃

@@janerussianchannel4669 From personal experience, I've heard people saying the opposite about Bulgarian in comparison to Russian. But, of course, it depends on what languages you already know and how easily you learn languages. Bulgarian isn't easy at all and it has a few major differences from all the other Slavic languages, but I greatly encourage you to learn it! It's a beautiful language : )

I have told people who were learning English before that English was easier than some languages and that's only because I already speak it and of course, I didn't stop to think how hard it could be for someone to learn English if it is not their first language. But when conditional or provisional meaning is meant, only “if” can be used. Further, only “whether” can be paired with “or not”. “If” and “whether” do overlap in usage. But for structural and semantic reasons, they are not interchangeable.

Not quite. In English "if" can often be used in place of "whether" but not the other way round. "If you upset me, I will cry" means that I'll only cry if you upset me. "Whether [or not] you upset me, I will cry" means that it doesn't matter whether you upset me, I will cry anyway.

My Russian's improved over the years but this has been something I've always been been confused about. I've also seen ли in questions before like "Умирает ли Хесус дла нас?" when it's a question that doesn't have a known answer which leads to a debate.

This is the context where the word “ли” in Russian would be used. It means “whether” more than it means “if” but in English “if” can be used in it’s own way and also as a synonym for “whether” so sometimes it’s translated as “if”. It doesn’t help us learners though because it makes things confusing. I hope that wasn’t too long anyway and helped you to understand the difference. (It’s kinda funny how, to understand these 2 Russian words you actually have to learn the context of the English uses rather than wonder what the Russian context is)
