This was truly a breathtaking song, especially given that its tempo is so downbeat, which was much more a trait of The First Age of Disco (1970-75), when music was not predicated on tempo (the whole beats-per-minute syndrome that ruined disco). In the First Age of Disco, WE provided the energy, the song merely had to smoke the house out!), but on sheer musicality, musicianship, and vocal power (and STELLAR harmonies!). This song came out in 1978, and then…WOW! This song is the brilliant result of all the magical factors (lead singer Vandross, harmonies, arrangement and production) falling magically into place. You can hear, even the first time you hear it - as the song is unfolding before your ears - that "this will be a classic." It was a time of lush, romantic, gorgeous piano melodies, string glissandos and brass tuttis. And this? A song of romance lost. It's a gorgeous song, period.
mcbrion....you couldn't have said it better. We are of an age-1953..I loved this period of music. This song in particular, at a dance club in New York City called Flamingo, when 2 friends found love with each other for awhile....I was one of them! "I remember when you took my breath away..."
Listen too those strings!!!! Just perfect & all the others instruments just knocking beats Ups! Can't get no better than this!! It just really takes my breath away!!!
This was released in the UK in 1988 as Luther vandross started to get a more mainstream following in the UK and heard the song on London capital radio.
I was fortunate to come across this song in the early 90's. It was featured as a bonus track on the CD Single of "Love the one you're with". Heard the Gregg Diamond version before Chaka Khan's & Sweet Inspirations covers. The original is by far the best
This is my favourite Luther song and the best version of this song. Unfortunately I can't play it as it is not available on mobile devices. Why, TH-cam, do you not allow it? I often play my playlist at work, and although I can play Searching and Glow of Love, both great tracks, this was, in my humble opinion, the best Luther Vandross song ever!
David Brown I know David.. It is pain in the buttock when that happens. And I agree.. Luther in his finest moment :) oooh, though See Me is gawwwwgous toooo :)
Chaka has the definitive version. However, it would have been interesting if Luther had recorded this song during his solo career. Nat Adderly Jr. would do the arrangements, Marcus Miller doing his thing. Would have been cool. 🎹
The amazing Luther Vandross
He doesn't sing it.
He lives it.
Music cant get any better than this.... Good Lord this takes me back.. always hits hard
Would love to bring those times back
Perfection all these years later. RIP Luther.
Love this Song❤️❤️
Weren't We All Young Once !!! (I'm talkin Physically) ... Happy Happy Times !!! 🤸🙆🌞

Yeah would totally agree with that. Where's the romance man? It seems to have gone.
Well stated!
@@jamiemartinwebb I just played this and saw your comment. Romance does seem to have died out, doesn't it?
It doesn't get better. One of Luther's top 10

What lyrics, nice arrangement, music? Bouncy, but cool.👍
Thirty four years late to find out that Chaka & Rufus covered this song, plus Luther is on it. I'm happy about this. Nice to hear the original.
Chaka Khan recorded this song in her second solo album!
I remember the first time I heard this
About 10 years after it was made

When I heard this on the radio, they called it Papillon, which was the name of Chaka Khan's version. 🤔
This is one of THE Classic Disco songs!
I bought this album at Peaches records for about $2.98 and i still play the album. Talking about Nostalgia when we have company.
