My colleague told me that Greece reminded her a lot of India. I now believe her with your recipe which is the same one we have for semolina halva. I am going to make a trip to Greece at the earliest possible!!!
Western Armenians make Halva too! We make it with roasted flour, butter, sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Yum. I need to make this today. Thanks Akis! Love your Greek recipes!
I belive Greek food to be very under represented over seas. I have spent much time in Halkidiki and Kekyra and I always manage to get a recipe from a Greek granny when I'm there. I must say I make a very tasty soffrito ❤I'm going to make this tonight akis, thank you for the simple and amazing Halva. Love from bonnie Scotland ❤
So I made the halva. Only problem is the turning it out part. I had difficulty and it wouldn't release from the tin, anyone know where I went wrong. I am not used to making desserts?
+Sümeyye First...Akis Petretziki's receipeis always is a happy hour, for many reasons...second they taste great, and about the Halva, is an arabian sweet -halvu- or smth like that, that Greeks from Micra Asia of Turkey brought it when they emmigrated to Greece and it's the most easy, delicious and if you play with the incridients , a very healthy and powerfull sweet especially to start at morning. Try to ad taxini (greek taste-like pinnutbutter and/or ad apple pieces, gozzi-berry, cranberries and whatever you like. You can also make it with white sugar instead of braun but it's sweetier...Akis...great show!
+Ioannis Petroulakis ı know taxini(tahini).I've been in greece Before so I know that the food culture is nearly the same. Plus I'm Greek descent living in Smyrna .there are greeks here too :))
Just made it. It is delicious. I've never tasted anything like this in my life.Greek sweets are so special and amazing. The Greek yogurt, the orange zest and the mint give an extra something to this delightful dessert. Ευχαριστώ :)
There's an old recipe similar to halva from the Byzantine empire called moustalevria. The main ingredients would be semolina and grape must ( the unfermented grape juice from the first press for wine).
Omg! We have a similar recipe for semolina halwa in Pakistan too. Except we use ghee instead of oil in all our halwas :D Ghee, semolina, cardamom, soaked and peeled almonds, sugar, water. I'm so glad to have found your channel. Never thought Greek food could be similar to Pakistani food! amazing! I'll definitely try orange peel next time :D *so excited*
It's very interesting sweet I ate it since 7 years ago with a good Greece chef and I loved he gave me the recipe now I prepared for my family it's very easy and very delicious and very cheap thanks a lot akis for this traditional Greece recipe from Algeria
Akis in India we make halwa too but instead of water we had milk and instead of cinnamon and clove we add cardamon and lots of dry fruits and nuts and we stir fry to semolina is clarified butter...
+Sheena Gomes In Greece we have next to countless of desserts that you could make a thousand plus page book about it. But in Greece there are also many recipes of Halva and there are also multiple types of halva. It's not uncommon to use milk or butter, nuts at all. I make a couple varieties of halva and I prefer the one with olive oil over butter. I usually add almonds too.
+Sheena Gomes Halva the word is Arabic, but this is a dish from Ancient Greece. It wasn't called halva back then. I'm not talking about the time of the Byzantines either. This is truly an ancient dish that used to be made with honey and olive oil. In modern times, this word halva has been borrowed and used as a catch-all term for recipes that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Conversely, there are things that Europeans don't call halva that are called halva elsewhere. For example, Italians have Torrone and Greeks have Mandolato. In other parts of the world that don't have a specific word for nougat, the nougat-like confection often gets called halva. The word halva is like a piece of bread. It's used to clean up the plate no matter what's on it.
Looks awesome! We make it in Iraq/Kurdistan as well, but we use flour in stead of semolina. Although I am going to try this :D You are awesome by the way. Regards from Norway
Hi Akis, I'm Iranian and we make Halva too. We make it with flour and we add saferan and a little rosewater , they make it smell lovely and the colour is very shiny and gold. So if you add some saferan to hot water (about 3 tb spoon water) and leave it for 10 minutes then add it to hava in the last 10 or 5 minutes before serving then add some cinnamon for garnish ,
hello from Montreal, I am from India and I use to make this at least twice or thrice a week but little bit of different version. Happy to know halwa is a international now.
Thanks for the recipe, I will try it and write down my review. The word as mentioned in one of the comments is an Arabic word for sweets. Arabs have 2 versions, the tahini-based halwa and the Omani/Bahrini halwa, but none of the 2 types contain semolina. We also have semolina-based sweets like basbousa, hareesa, madlo'ah (in the Levant) but we don't call these halwa.
I just made this and turned out quite similar to our country's Halwa only we use different aromatics as there's a healthier version. For health watchers.. take it from here... ●Toast the flour/semolina alone until golden, sift well in a bowl. ●Carefully put honey/turbinado sugar and a 1/4 cup water in the pot and allow it to boil over high heat. ●Add cardamom and saffron previously set in 2 tbsps rose water. ●Add water to the flour transferred to a bowl, mix well. ●Pour flour mix onto the aromatics in the pot and add more water. ●As it thickens add just a teaspoon of ghee/oil/butter. Voila 🤗 Note:You may garnish with nuts if you wish. It's your cooking, your kitchen.. go nuts! 😄 You can do the same with lovely Akis's recipe here. Regards ⚘
+Divya Sood Halva is found in everywhere east of Italy and west of China. There are many variations of course. My favourite version is the one made with Tahini and honey. It doesn't feature much in Greek cookbooks but can be bought in stores all over Greece.
+Divya Sood Halva the word is Arabic, but this is a dish from Ancient Greece. It wasn't called halva back then. I'm not talking about the time of the Byzantines either. this is what we call Sooji Halva in India , and normally we add milk instead of water and ghee or unsalted butter as well with all kinds of Nuts and Cardamom. I ts so interesting that Greek and Indians have HALVA/HALWA. cheers..
It seems I make one of your recipes everyday now, this is the fourth one and it turned out great as usual. I made Halva today but I didn't have brown sugar so I added about 1.5 cups of white sugar and 2 tablespoons of molasses, and half cup of shredded coconuts with the almond. It was amazing, it smelled like heaven and the taste was incredible. it was literally devoured in 10 minutes. Thanks so much Akis, I can't wait to try the next recipe
I am so glad you liked my idea, on the contrary, molasses is availble in every grocery store in Egypt, while you have to go to really big supermarkets to get brown sugar, and it's quite expensive, so we use this trick alot in the recipes that requires brown sugar. That's what I like most about you actually, you don't follow the exact known recipe and you modify and tweak and add your own touches to the recipes which make them unique and taste wonderful, like your Pasta Aglio for example, it's better than the original recipe, so keep up the good work even if angry Italians kept screaming at you at the comments :D
I'm going to try this with date syrup! I once had halva that was like the texture of yours, but for sure it was made with date syrup, thank you for giving me the key to the texture.
Hi Aki...the same recipe is made in india as well known as rawa kesari or just rawa halva. Rawa is semolina...In your other video u made semolina cake which is ravani...same rawa is semolina in india :D :D YOU ARE JUST AWESOME AKI
