Therr actually is another way to get Pokèmon's specific candies. If you have the Pokèball Plus then take your Pokèmon for a stroll and walk and fidget with it for a little bit it will give you the candies of the Pokèmon you're taking for a stroll.
The irony is I got a back to back shiny weedle then caterpie. I chained caterpie and got weedle, messed up my chain, and got shiny caterpie 2 seconds after

The combo doesn't matter for the species specific candy, I caught a Weedle after already having a broken chain and got 5 for that.
