Power pop is the best genre :) Great overview. Nick Lowe is also up there for me. Have you done any reviews or rundowns of modern power pop bands? I've really grown to like White Reaper, and also Kurt Baker's got some pretty good stuff out there.
Yes indeed! In a few other power pop videos I did I feature Black Vinyl Shoes...both the CD box set as well as an early vinyl copy I found! I love them!
I thought I'd slot this comment in here rather than start a new one, I'm pleased that someone pointed out the name of the band is ''SHOES'' (not the Shoes) ther is no 'the' in their name. Though it's an easy mistake to make (see common mistake, Eagles often called 'The' Eagles, there isn't any 'The' in their name also'), I think there is a different band called 'The Shoes', so watch out when you search for ''SHOES'' @@TheOmahaIntrovert cheers🎸
Fantastic selection, and SO happy you're giving Sloan some love, one of my favorite bands, and Power Pop genre in general. Their albums, aside from the current reissues, are pretty hard to find (impossible in some cases) or too cost prohibitive (for me, anyway). And, my God, Teenage Fanclub hasn't released a sub-par album ever, so so good. As I am watching this I'm thinking to myself, "Man, where's the Nick Lowe...?", and then relaxed when you brought out Pure Pop (or, Jesus Of Cool, depending where you are in the world), so thank you for that as I would have hadd a coronary if you hadn't! :) Fantastic selection, can only think of one that's a favorote of mine and that would be Dwight Twilly's Sincerely, almost (not quite) up there with Pure Pop, and one I discovered way late in the game.
Hi Ian! Sloan have been a very consistent band, and that's why I love them so much! I've never seen an original vinyl album of theirs...yeah, must be near impossible to find! I'm glad my inclusion of Nick Lowe satisfied you! I couldn't leave him out, of course! He's too important! I need to get educated on Dwight Twilley. Thank you for bringing him up! Peace.
Good rundown of bands Squeeze offBroadway early Motels,ThePop 54/40 Phil Seymour,Dwight Twilley as some other favs I recall off the top of my head The Nerves you mentioned before they split and became The Plimsouls and The Beat
Hi Hanna- this video is definitely up my alley! Nice synopsis of Power Pop genre. I can’t argue with any of your top 10 selections or honorable mentions. I have the majority of the albums you showed, but I still need to check out Blue Ash. Additional favorites I’d mention are Material Issue 'International Pop Overthrow', Eugene Edwards 'My Favorite Revolution', The Someloves 'Something or Other', Tommy Keene 'Songs From the Film' and The Keys s/t (obscure 80’s UK vinyl only release produced by Joe Jackson). Have a great Sunday! - Matt
Thanks, Matt. Was hoping you'd tune in to this one! Definitely check out Blue Ash. You definitely brought up some bands/artists that I'm behind on discovering within this genre. The Someloves I had written down before from someone who had also recommended them. Time to get sampling! :-) Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
The Easybeats - Friday on my Mind The Move - Messages from the Country Big Star - Radio City Badfinger - Wish You Were Here Bram Tchaikovsky - Strange Man, Changed Man Cheap Trick - In Color The Grays - Ro Sham Bo Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen Sloan - Navy Blues Weezer - Maladroit The Raspberries and The Cars are great, but best served in a hits collection.
I love 70’s 80’s Power Pop is great some of my favorites are Cheap Trick , Dwight Twilley Band ,Phil Seymore all time amazing singers Tom Petty , Records , the rubinoos , 20/20,The shoes The only ones , the undertones, The flaming groovies,The star jets ,Teenage fan club , Ash , Rockpile ,The headboys Thanks for asking !
I too just recently discovered 20/20 s/t and had been playing it for a good month (can't speak highly enough about it!) then I got Look Out. Just love them both.
The Knack were tremendous musicians, and that first album is great. Yellow Pills is a true power-pop classic, and so glad you mentioned Shoes! Elvis Costello has one of the strongest and most complete catalogs in all of music. Read his autobiography a couple of years ago, what a great read that was. The Posies are awesome, have seen them a number of times, a very under-appreciated band. And a big yes to XTC Drums and Wires and Black Sea. Nice to see you mention the Replacements, actually opened for them way back when. Cheap Trick was my first concert, and one of my favorite bands ever. I had a feeling the Records and Badfinger would be up there, and just knew Big Star would be number one because they were absolutely enthralling as a band and had so many fantastic songs. You included everything I hoped you would, thank you so much!
Wow did not expect Nada Surf to show up here! My dad plays keyboards for them and has mixed/produced several of their albums. Always love when someone mentions them :)
Hello Hanna, New to your channel and just subscribed! Tommy James and the Shondells were influential to many power pop artists. As far as new bands go, The Struts have the attitude. I was fortunate to see them last year. Dwight Twilley is a master of the genre. This was a great video. Thanks, Ralph
New subscriber! Whoop whoop! Welcome, Ralph! Thank you for being here. You're very right about Tommy James & the Shondells being a terrific influence to this genre. I guess I need to catch up on the Struts! Have a great week!
Hello Hanna; Good video well presented & explained. Liked all your choices of power pop bands that you enjoy. I want to throw the following bands into the mix. The Pop, Pezband, Dwight Twilley, original 2 man group & Bram Tchaikovsky. Excellent video for debate, well done. Take care. Tina & Pat!~
Hi Tina and Pat! Glad you liked the power pop video. I'm unfamiliar with the Pop and Bram Tchaikovsky. I've heard of Pezband from someone else, but just haven't sampled yet. Dwight Twilley is one I missed, darn it! Great recommendations. Power pop forever!
Fabulous overview. I’d put Nick Lowe at number one on my power pop list but everything you showed is great. I want to jump in on this but not sure I could offer anything else Hmmmmm🎸🥁🐇
Nick is absolutely number one for me, too. Pure Pop for Now People (Jesus of Cool) is still a pleasure to listen to even after all these years. On a sad note, RIP Adam Schlesinger. A great loss to the pop songwriting world.
My 1st comment after I joined/subbed your channel was telling how I discovered the HooDoo Guru's in a 99 cents bargain bin... Heard their name but not their music - what a pleasant surprise, This was power pop at its finest, IMHO. 99 cents!!! Peace to you/all/ and stay safe.
Really good video!! You did a really good break down on the format. The Simmtherenns (ya I kknow I spelled wrong ) well I always liked there music, played them on my radio show. I forget what cd it was a white and red cover. Well peace
Hey there, Rod! Oh yeah, their "11" album is really good. I believe I have it on cassette! "A Girl Like You" and "The Blues Before and After" are on there! Rock on!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert thats the song!!! A girl like you. 13 years in radio I play so many songs I cant remember them all. Sometimes I just remeber it being track 3 or something. Peace
Great video! Huge XTC fan here, though I’ve never considered them power pop other than a few songs here and there. Also love Jellyfish (got to see them live!) and Matthew Sweet who I saw live at a VERY small bar here in Chattanooga just a couple years ago.
Hi Adam! So glad you're a big XTC fan as well! Yeah, XTC have a nice blend of styles in their music. Not strictly power pop, that's for sure! You got to see Jellyfish live?! I'm so jealous! I got to see Matthew Sweet in the mid-2000s and it was a fantastic gig! He's always great! Cheers!
Great video. Another ones of my favorites Dwight Twilley Band - Sincerely Phil Seymour - Phil Seymour Jack Green - Humanesque Earth Quake - Levelled Joe Jackson - I'm the man The Motors - Approved by
Ooooo, how did I forget Humanesque from Jack Green! I have it on vinyl! I need to get on the bus with Dwight Twilley and some of the others. I appreciate the recommendations! Peace.
Hi Hanna. Almost all my collection is on vinyl. I have two more from Jack Green (Reverse logic and Mystique), but I think Humanesque is his best album..
Hi Hanna , You did an Awesome job covering the heavy hitters & the lesser knowns. Glad to see The Plimsouls & 20/ 20 get some love. You should check out " I"m On Fire " by Dwight Twilley Band which was pure power pop & somehow went top 10 ! Also , the first 2 Tom Petty albums particularly " You're Gonna Get It " My Personal favorite is Big 🌟 but DB's " Repercussion " is particularly brilliant ! I'm going to spin " Heaven Tonight " now ! Great clip Hanna ! 🎸
I totally missed Dwight Twilley, eh? Darn it! We have the same personal favorite with Big Star. High five! Yeah, Repercussion and Stands for decibels are definitely the BEST from the dB's. Sound of Music wasn't bad, either. Good observation with some killer power pop on those first 2 Tom Petty LPs. I agree! Cheers! Thanks, my friend.
Hi! I saw in one of your videos you were holding up a Bongos lp. They’re great. Speaking of power pop, maybe you’ve heard of my brother Matthew Sweet, who many people consider to be a power pop guy. If you didn’t know, he lives in Omaha too! Great channel-keep up the good work.
Love the Bongos! I've been a fan since I first heard them in the mid-2000s! Not sure if made it all the way to my top 10 part of this particular video, but I did give Matthew Sweet MUCH praise. He is in my top 10 with his album In Reverse. Peace.
What a great guide to Power Pop! Thank you so much for this video Hanna 👌🏾👍🏾... I’m not very familiar with this musical genre so this is very informative for me. I guess I have some sampling to do. Have a nice week my friend 😊
Hi Eve! Happy sampling. I know you recently were getting into prog rock. I hope you like power pop equally as much! Thanks for the comment! Happy Sunday night!
Brilliant to see Velvet Crush get props! Such cool guys and a great sound. Ric and Paul were in Champaign when I was going to school there and got to see them play many different bands. Nice breakdown of the genre. Keep it ip
Hey Hanna, The first CD I ever bought was Big Star's #1 Record/ Radio City. I waited until that came out on import, and then I went and bought a CD player. I know a few people who just "don't get" Big Star and I feel sorry for them. BTW, my favorite Badfinger album is Wish You Were Here. It is power pop perfection. Wonderful video. Take care...
Tim, so cool that your first ever CD was #1 Record/Radio City. I remember picking it up in the mid-2000s and being obsessed with that 2-fer! I have to question people who do not "get" Big Star! I also have Wish You Were Here. Not sure why I didn't show it here! It's stunning! Hope you're having a good week.
Wow, one of the best VC videos I ve ever seen, my top 3 are the same as yours, on the fourth place I ll put Eva Braun band from Becej Serbia, album Pop Music, on the fifth former Yugoslav band from Zagreb, called Patrola with album U Sredini (In the Middle). I also agre with Teenage Fan Club, but my favorite is Songs From Northern Britain... with one of the best opening tracks ever Start Again!!! Best regards from Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia 😊
Thank you for the compliments on my video! Songs from Northern Britain is another great album from Teenage Fanclub! Love that you have the same top 3 as me! Seems I need to check out those other bands you mentioned! I appreciate the recommendations! Cheers!
Action Pact was a great album from Sloan...then again, they release all good albums! I do remember Jet. Wow, it's been so long since I've listened to them, though. I totally remember those commercials!
Very good overview. I would add Squeeze and Let's Active. Regarding The dbs, there were an amazing number of bands that came out the high schools in W-S during the late sixties and early seventies. Mitch Easter being the other most noted. But there were also several others, including one called Secret Service that I saw back in college. They released one indie EP. Very enjoyable video, take care, Elliott
Hi there, Elliott! I love Let's Active. Mitch Easter was a super talent. I think I'd put them more in the jangle pop category, but yes, still pop and still very good. I have 2 or 3 of their albums. I'm not sure why I didn't mention Squeeze. D'oh. Oh well, Mazzy covered them in his response video. I'll need to check out Secret Service. Cheers!
So amazed every time about the knowledge you have into so many genres which only defines the love you have for music. Thanks for sharing your enthousiasm.
Great video Hanna! I love that Cheap Trick and Badfinger made your top 10. I need to see the Badfinger documentary you mentioned. I will have to pick up Big Star eventually. Take care.
Thanks, Melinda! Been picking up Badfinger albums when I've seen them in the last year. I need to catch up on a lot more Cheap Trick. Only have 3 LPs so far! Oh yes, you need to get some Big Star...sooner than later. Craft Recordings just reissued their first 2 albums on 180-gram vinyl. Very tempting for me to get different pressings of those classics. Hope all is well!
Hi Hanna - great topic. I saw three responses (Mazzy, Elliott Crews, and Christopher Kibler) before I saw your original! So cool that you remembered Shoes. I have Black Vinyl Shoes - that's the one they recorded in their living room. Present Tense is such a great album. My favorite power pop bands? Well if Small Faces are power pop, that's it. Otherwise, Todd, Big Star, Undertones...Great video! ~ Randall
Hey Randy! I'm glad people did response videos. I had a lot of fun with this one. I really need to find Black Vinyl Shoes! The Small Faces definitely had a hand in creating power pop! I need to check out the Undertones! Catch ya later!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Hi Hanna - I've just now learned, from a comment posted to my Dave Roback video, that Dave has died. Can't believe it - 63 years old. Not power pop, but I'm pretty sure he falls into the shoegaze category. RIP Dave.
Hi Hanna Very good video you did a fine job defining Power Pop which is quite difficult to do. I can't believe how many of the albums you showed I have, but also some I was unaware of. I will be on the look out for those. My Favourites are The Flamin Groovies , saw them again last year they have a big following in the UK. Of course Big Star and the Raspberries and an Australian band, The Hoodoo Guru's. I also love a guy called Van Duran from Memphis who hung about at Ardent Studio's where Big Star recorded. His debut album 'Are you Serious' is a classic, influenced by Rungren and Emmit Rhodes. Unfortunately it was his only released LP and sunk without trace. Though my number one would be Pezband who came from Chicago and made a great LP called 'Laughter in the Dark'. Though so much great music like you I could name dozens. I would be hard pressed to name a top ten, who to leave out. I think power pop is not taken that seriously in the UK and bands like the Groovies and Nick Lowe are labelled Pub Rock. Fantastic job and thanks. Gary
Hi Gary! It was a bit difficult explaining this subgenre of rock! Glad I introduced you to some new ones! Ah, I could have mentioned the Hoodoo Gurus! I have one of their albums. I hope to find that Pezband album one day! The Groovies are so excellent! :-) Cheers!
I just discovered your videos and subbed to your channel. Your way of presenting is so warm, natural and insightful. Thanks for reminding me of and introducing me to some brilliant bands and albums.
Excellent primer on power pop. So many great albums that you showed. You need to get Cheap Tricks first album. That is a straight up classic. XTC, of course you know I think they are great. The Records! I love that first album. Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello would be high up on my list too. And Marshall Crenshaw is the epitome of power pop. Big Star..absolutely! Great video, Hanna! On to shoegaze!
Thanks so much, Jeff! Yeah, the first Cheap Trick album is on my wishlist. I'll find it one of these days for a decent price. I remember sending you that Records LP a while back and I'm so glad you dig it, too! Knew you'd agree with me on my #1, too! :-) Later, my friend.
Great video! I recommended Stiv Bators ( Dead Boys, Lords of New church) album Disconnected (1980,Bomb!) with Frank Secich from Blue Ash in guitar. Its a great power pop album with a cool album cover.
Hi Hanna, Always fun to see some new videos from you. Wow... I never realized how much power pop I listen to. I have most of these bands. Love them all Raspberries, Todd Rundgren, Squeeze, the Cars, Elvis Costello. For me Raspberries adore. The Cars. Something/Anything is a desert island disc. Velvet Crush.... sounds like candy pop.... by the name, Will need to listen to these. Heard of the Posies. Did not know The Beat. Smithereens are awesome. XTC's Skylarking are another desert island disc for me. Love Cheap Trick. My Top 10: 10 - Squeeze - East Side Story 9 - Badfinger - Straight Up (Yes, tragic in so many ways....) 8 - Elvis Costello - My Aim is True 7 - Nick Lowe - Jesus of Cool 6 - Cheap Trick - Live at Budakan 5 - Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything 4 - The Knack 3 - XTC - Skylarking 2 - The Raspberries - Greatest 1 - The Cars (debut) (As you said.... a perfect album....) Thank you for doing this , God bless, Tino
Hi Tino! High five for being a huge power pop fan as well! I'm not sure why I left Squeeze out. East Side Story is so wonderful! I love you list and that you ranked the Cars as your #1! Are you familiar with Big Star? I plan on getting Something/Anything the next time I see it! Take care, my friend.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I have heard of them.. but not familiar with their music. As the purse strings are pretty tight.. cannot experiment or discover too much..
A very impressive overview. You really know your stuff! Every time I said, "What about . . . ?" Bang! You included the band. Here's a few more for the list: Tommy Keene, Bram Tchaikovsky, The Searchers (1979), Let's Active, Adam Schmitt ("World So Bright") and The Greenberry Woods. Oh, and do give The Rembrandts another try; their first album is by far their best. Thanks for doing these power pop videos, and keep up the great work!
Hi Jerry! Yeah, I tried to make sure this first power pop intro video was as comprehensive as I could make it! Check out my jangle pop series where I talk about Let's Active. I haven't talked about Tommy Keene yet, but that's gonna be in my upcoming power pop update video! I do like the late-70s Searchers a lot! I'll check out Greenberry Woods! Thank you for the recommendations!
Great video! I'd like to throw in the wondermints, owsley, toy matinee, the tories, pursuit of happiness, the feeling, cotton mather, and the grays.......of course Juliana! This video inspired me to send you a package of power pop that belongs in your collection, it should get there in a week and a half :-]
Thanks for checking out my first power pop episode, Paul! I have other offerings too if you're interested! I miss the Flashing Lights! What a band. I'll have to check out the Heats. I'm unfamiliar. Thanks for the comment!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert You're welcome. Thanks also for telling me about Idaho. Great band ,must have missed them before. Keep doing your videos. I will keep watching. Stay safe.
wow! your channel is great! it is my new favorite youtube music channel! i highly recommend the documentary getting the knack. in the doc it says doug fieger saw a pic of johnny rotten wearing a white long sleeve shirt + black vest + skinny black tie and that is what inspired his look. he also says the back of their debut album was a joke : "hey kids!' the new big thing is the same as the last big thing!'. it tells a VERY detailed account of how their young manager made all the wrong choices without the band's knowledge causing much of the backlash against the band. to me, their sound was much, much more early who (and early KinKs) than it was beatles. thanks for all the great videos.
So glad you've enjoyed my videos, John! I have a new video being released today or tomorrow. Hope you can catch it! I would love to see that Knack documentary for sure. Interesting info you provided here. Much appreciated!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert i look forward to it. i highly, HIGHLY recommend the documentary getting the knack. their young manager turned down an offer to be on american bandstand + turned down bob hope's offer of the band playing my sharona on the great wall of china on one of his specials which was the first time filming by an american tv crew had been allowed there + told saturday night live that the only way the band would appear is if they could also host! + turned down an offer to play the grammys which was seen by 30 million people that year ... ALL without the band even knowing!
You know the saying about old dogs and new tricks? That's me but I try to understand. An album can be power pop and also in other categories? And I know groups hate to be put into categories. Good job. I think I'm starting to understand. My favorite power pop is Journey? Thanks Hanna. Your videos brighten my day. Bill
Thanks, Bill! I certainly think a band can fall into different genres depending on the album! I would say Journey falls more into the arena rock category, but you can call them what you want. It's all rock n roll, right?! Cheers! Thanks for being here.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Agree about Journey overall (especially early stuff) but a few of their singles could fit into this wide ranging Power Pop genre (anyway you want it).
Excellent video Hanna. It took me a long time to watch because I kept popping to Amazon to listen to the MP3 snippets. I was pleased to see Teenage Fanclub recommend although my preference is for Bandwagonesque. I bought their next few albums as soon as they came out but there didn't seem enough variety so I always stuck with my first. There is a good compilation though. I was also pleased to hear Nick Lowe mentioned. Jesus of Cool is great. I went on a buying spree last December and January (well before the lockdown) and snapped up four Matthew Sweet albums, something by Sloan and a few others but I haven't heard them enough yet to know how I feel. My listening to genres seems to go in phases and you may have inspired me to launch myself into power pop for a few weeks.
Hey there, Paul. Being stuck in a power pop listening phase isn't a bad thing! I've been stuck in it for a few months now, hehe! Glad you bought some Matthew Sweet and Sloan recently. Favorites there. Oh, I love Bandwagonesque from TF, too. They have so many solid albums! Keep enjoying that power pop, my friend!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Things didn't go as expected. After listening to a few albums I was diverted to the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Very different from power pop but perhaps my favourite band since the glorious 1970s.
Although they might be grouped with early punk, the Undertones from Northern Ireland are full of power and melodic hooks, their first two albums are classic. I would also include the first two Joe Jackson albums, Look Sharp and I'm the Man. You could include Buzzcocks also, a legendary punk band with great pop hooks
Cool vid, I'm a big Todd Rundgren fan, he is very hard to get along with in the studio. You should own all his albums well into the eighties. I love Big Star, as you already know, The dB's were good friends, I hung out with them a lot. I love the Bongos, Marshall Crenshaw, Badfinger and many others. I do not consider the Cars necessarily power pop. Thanks for another great video. You have impeccable taste. Stay well, young lady. ❤️
I'm just so jealous that you were friends with the dB's. They seem like really cool dudes and down to earth. Okay, so the Cars are more new wave..but with plenty of hooks and power pop elements! I will try to get into Todd Rundgren. Gonna focus on finding Something/Anything at the upcoming record shows! You have excellent taste, too! Thanks!
Hanna great job! You touched many bases with great power pop bands! I have collected power pop music since 1964 when the Beatles hit and your video and all the comments covered all the great songs and groups!!😀 I play Big Star on the guitar often; Ballad of El Goodo is one of my favorites! Check out the group “20-20” from the early 80 s (“Yellow Pills”and”Sheri”) and my favorite LP of all time Badfinger’s “Wish You We’re Here”; you will be amazed how good the whole album is!!
Thanks so much for watching! I have other power pop videos, too. Kind of strange that you didn't notice that I showed 20/20 in this video towards the beginning. I have "Wish You Were Here" by Badfinger, too. Cheers.
Thanks, Super job/ video explaining Power Pop. I love Big Star - Number One Record/Radio City and Badfinger - Straight Up. I’ve been looking for The Records. I also love 20/20 and the Shoes. I will listen to some of your picks on u tube. I would also recommend Pezband 1979 album Cover to Cover (especially the B Side.)
Hi again, John! So cool you stopped by for my first power pop installment. I'm currently working on another one and will be featuring several cool power pop labels. I'm still looking for Cover to Cover by Pezband. No luck finding it yet but it's fun to always be on the hunt! I'm currently obsessed with the Only Ones. I hope you find some records by the Records soon! Cheers!
Sloan is one of my top favs. The Smithereens are great. My favorite XTC albums are The Big Express, Black Sea, Skylarking and Oranges and Lemons. I never knew that Badfinger was power pop! Your descriptions and knowledge of power pop are impressive. Keep up the good work. ~Nicola
Thanks, Nicola! Solid top picks for XTC LPs! Can't get enough of Drums n Wires and Black Sea. Very cool that Sloan are one of your faves! Glad you liked this video! Peace.
The first two Joe Jackson albums (Look Sharp and I’m the Man), Squeeze’s East Side Story, Michael Penn’s March, Aimee Mann’s I’m With Stupid, Crowded House’s first two albums(Crowded House and Temple of Low Men) and their 4th album (Together Alone) - you have many of my favorites on your list like Jellyfish, Badfinger, Marshall Crenshaw, Big Star, XTC, Todd Rundgren, Cheap Trick, The Knack but I’m intrigued by some of the groups like Blue Ash, and The Bongos. I love this exchange of likes. Thank you for sharing your passion.
Hey Scott! Love your top picks! For some reason I haven't really listened to Michael Penn yet. I need to rectify that. Aimee Mann's I'm With Stupid is my absolutely favorite from her. We need vinyl reissues! I hope you dig Blue Ash and the Bongos. The Bongos were unique! Thanks for being here. Peace.
The Omaha Introvert hey, I just rediscovered an obscure, early-90s power pop trio from Boston called The Cavedogs. They only put out two albums before breaking up. I have Joy Rides for Shut-Ins on CD. Really tight band and all three musicians wrote songs, too. You can get a used CD copy on amazon but alas no vinyl. Vinyl reissues would be awesome!
Nice exposè. Funny that the only 'mats album I don't have is Pleased to Meet Me! I first heard of them in 89 on late night CBC radio. The song I heard was Answering Machine. I loved it and immediately set out to find Let It Be. I've been following Sloan since 91 when they dropped their first full length. My absolute favorite of theirs is Between The Bridges from 99. Material Issue brings back fond memories. One of the earliest punk flavored ones was Turning Japanese by The Vapors. I was in grade 8 when that came out and of course at that age, it was totally cool. Thanks.
Hi Derek! Glad you were able to catch my first power pop video! Oh the 'Mats were so good! I recently picked up the Pleased to Meet Me box set with vinyl reissue and 3 CDs of lots of material. It's pretty awesome! Kudos on your love of Sloan, too! Between the Bridges is a great one. I'd love to pick up some of their vinyl reissues. I think they are one of the power pop bands I really connected with early on in my power pop journey! Stay tuned for an in-the-works Material Issue documentary. Hopefully it is released sometime this year. Cheers!
Super cool and informative video Hanna. I love all these sub-genres you are into. I have never heard of most of them, so I am enjoying learning what they are and what music fits into them. Keep rocking!
Excellent overview of Power Pop! Get the Knack is such a killer record! They're known as a "one-hit wonder" but the entire album is fantastic! The Nerves did the original "Hanging on the Telephone" that Blondie covered on "Parallel Lines". Man, had to wait 20 minutes to hear Cheap Trick mentioned..lol...Anyone looking to get into Matthew Sweet dig up his collection titled "Time Capsule: The Best of Matthew Sweet 1990-2000". It's some of the best rock music produced in the 90's!
Thanks for leaving a comment, Ed! Yeah, that Knack album is a CLASSIC! Very cool tidbit about the Nerves! I'd like to find something of theirs on vinyl. I have Time Capsule from Matthew Sweet on burned disc. Man, that is a perfect compilation indeed! Sorry I took so long to mention Cheap Trick, but they were in my top 10! :-)
Hi - I just saw this video. Nice job. Here’s an idea for your next Power Pop video: take all the Power Pop artists you mention here and even some you didn’t (hello Dwight Twilley Band and Phil Seymour solo), and combine two of your fave albums by them like you did with your number 1 “album” by Big Star. Pick an album’s worth of your faves from those two albums, and see how your top 10 list looks then! The first artist you mention in the start of this video - Raspberries - is easily my #1. They released 3 albums in less than 2 years that were loaded with both hits and deep track gems, and this feat made them the sole architects of Power Pop IMHO.
"Something/Anything" is a great start for T Rundgren's music. Another is his 2nd album "Runt: The Ballad of..." His first is called "Runt" as well. The one I'm mentioning is the one with the cover where he's seated at a piano with a noose around his neck. It has 2 of his most wonderful songs: "Long Flowing Robe" and "Boat on the Charles" but the whole album's great. "A Wizard, A True Star" is a great listen as well, but this is where his jarring transitions from experimental music to pure pop came into play for the first time. If you're okay with some weirdness, it's a great album. "Sometimes I Don't Know What to Feel," another of his greatest songs, is on that one.
Hi Hanna, great video i always find new bands to be on the lookout for from you, very informative. Mazzy is another person who always gives me a lot of info on music groups.
Thanks so much, Gary. Mazzy did a really cool response video to this topic, too. All the info you need on power pop. Rock on! Can't wait to show off the turntable in the room tour! It's really a gem.
Hey Hanna, great to see your overview of Power Pop. A lot of albums/bands that I have never heard of. It was especially nice to see your top 10. I was guessing #1 Record at the top. I had that two-fer cd as well, but yes that is cheating :) Big Star Third would also be great to get on vinyl. As you know Grand Prix is another fave of mine. Bandwagoneque Thirteen, and Grand Prix is an awesome run of albums. I need to pick up Girlfriend on vinyl as I only have Matthew Sweet on cd. There were some surprises in your top 10 which was interesting to see.
Thank you, Lou! Glad I was able to surprise you with a power pop video. I know, I totally cheated with those 2 Big Star albums for my #1! I just have Big Star's 3rd on CD so far. I need to stop procrastinating and get some Teenage Fanclub on vinyl. I remember you showing some of their albums on vinyl and I was jealous. I heard that Intervention Records did some high quality pressings of some Matthew Sweet albums. I need to get some on vinyl myself. So far I just have Wicked System of Things and Sunshine Lies on vinyl. Have a great week!
Wow, The Beat, yes, The Bongos, Matthew Sweet, Flamin Groovies, best album ! Badfinger !! Nick Lowe, Db's and finish with the quintessential Big Star. Impressive and excellent video.
Thank you again, Jeff! The Bongos are so underrated. Richard Barone himself has like a few of my Instagram posts, which has been really cool! This first power pop video was a fun one to put together!
Excellent video, Hanna. I’m a fan of power pop. You definitely mentioned most of the heavy hitters. Was pleased to see the Smithereens mentioned, which is a favorite of mine. Love the Oranges and Lemons album, that album was in heavy rotation back in the day. I would love to find it on vinyl someday. You mentioned a few bands I was not familiar with, so I’ll will definitely be sampling some of your suggestions.
Thank you, Cindy! Oranges and Lemons is hard to find in the wild. I had to resort to either eBay or Discogs. Yay, another Smithereens fan! High Five! Very cool that you will be exploring some more of these bands further. Have an excellent week! Peace.
Hi Hanna. Love when you do this videos about a genre and the fact you did different parts, almost like a documentary :). You did a good job giving an overview of the genre. I recently reordered my collection of both CD's and Vinyl and counted 28 genres for CD's and 32 genres for vinyl, and then put them on an Excell archive. I know this sounds insane but that makes me enjoy my collection a lot more than using just generic alphabetical for several reasons. Hope you do more of these videos. Glad you're back from your road trips to look for vinyl, wish I could do that here but there's no recors stores, so at least I can watch your videos.
Hi there, Alejandro. I appreciate you always chiming in! I'm glad you noticed that I'm trying to be a bit more professional with my channel and polishing it up a bit. It's nice to make videos that are easier for everyone to follow. 28 CD genres and 32 vinyl genres...that's impressive! Love hearing that. You have a good organization method. I will be heading out in a week for another trip, so you'll be seeing more record store footage sometime soon! Cheers, my friend.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Well some genres I just made it up for fun lol, but the majority of them are generally used on music encyclopedias and websites. I can't describe'em all here cause post would be too long. Im glad you are going on another trip soon, have fun ¡
@@TheOmahaIntrovert of course, well I could send you the excel archive somehow, is that possible on you tube? Or send me an email, just say "hi Im Hanna" then I will send you the list on excell aleriverac1@gmail.com
Hello fantastic video on Power Pop, which is a genre I don’t know well. As I live in France, I used to read Rolling Stone magazine in the 80s To try to get other inspirations for music. In 89, they published an excellent review on « Stolen Wishes » by the Shoes. I ordered it in the USA as it was not distributed in Europe and loved it. It is a cd and I don’t think it has been pressed on vinyl. I still have it. This band is Power Pop for me. I found two other albums (cheap and no so much collected here) from them : Black Vinyl Shoes and Shoes present Tense. I love the Posies : thanks for presenting the second album I don’t have. Recently, as I was member of a French vinyl club, I received in May 2019 an excellent album that could be in that section « Out Of The Box » by the Young Sinclairs. They are from Virginia, USA. Take care. Bruno
Thank you for the kind words, Bruno, and I'm so glad you liked this video! I really need to find Black Vinyl Shoes on vinyl . They were so fantastic! The Posies had so many wonderful albums. Glad you are also a fan of them. I will need to look up the Young Sinclairs. I appreciate the recommendation! Cheers!
Wow, the Raspberries were from Cleveland. Lot of bands were from that area. I always think of Cheap Trick with power pop until the 80s then they got to ballad oriented, can’t stand The Flames. Just picked up The Records a couple of weeks ago, I had it on tape for over 30 years but never really paid it. I will have to listen to it a little more. Interesting choice with Crenshaw, fro Detroit, no kidding. That’s another album I have never spun much. Time to revisit. Big Stat is great when they had Chris Bell. Enjoyed. Steve
Hey Steve! Yeah, Cheap Trick were a band that crossed over into many different genres, including a bit of metal, too! That first Records LP is so darn good! Glad you picked it up on wax. Definitely revisit Marshall Crenshaw. Rock on!
Hey Hanna. Black Vinyl Shoes is great. Cool to see The Flashing Lights get mentioned. Jason Falkner has some terrific solo albums for sure. Especially the first two. I think a lot of people dismiss Nada Surf as a one hit wonder but they have a lot of great modern power pop records. In Reverse is high on my list of albums needing a vinyl release. Badfinger is delicious. There were a couple posthumous Pete Ham albums released in the 90's I really dug. Great discussion. The list is endless. Take care. Cheers!
Hey Sam! I need to look into picking up those early Jason Falkner albums! Not many people have heard of the Flashing Lights, so kudos to you! Nada Surf are very power pop. I find their albums to be really consistent, too. Got to see them live in 2006 at the Fillmore East. Great show! Need to check out the posthumous Pete Ham releases. Thanks for watching, as always! Cheers!
Pop is a dirty word with a lot of music fans but I have always love it and it was the first music I was expose to as a child with all the great 1960s am radio hits. Good list you have their. I saw a regrouped The Knack live in the late 1990s. They were sharp as ever. Got to include Nick Lowe. His song Rollers Show is brilliant. Good video. :)
Hanna, great overview and so many good albums . I was just looking through my Marshall Crenshaw collection this weekend. Love that first album, along with the Flamin' Groovies "Shake Some Action" (that used to be my ringtone, but usually got me strange looks at work), Smithereens and Big Star. Thanks,, Chris
Thanks so much, Chris. I also have Field Day from Crenshaw on vinyl and then a rarities CD of demos, etc. Heard he's fronting the Smithereens now. Too cool! "Shake Some Action" as a ringtone - I now want that as my ringtone! Hope you had a great weekend!
Hi Hannah. Thanks to your recommendation, I finally got round to picking up the 1st two Big Star albums on the single cd package issued some years ago for just over £4! Where have these albums been all my life! Truly wonderful. Love the videos and keep up the good work!
Hey there, Paul! I'm so glad you got that 2-in-1 Big Star #1 Record/Radio City CD. That's what I started with and it's beyond wonderful to have. Those are really special albums. I'm glad you are on your Big Star journey. That's a magical discovery. Enjoy!
Great video, can't wait to check out some of these bands. Oddly enough even though i live in the Chicago area, I have never actually heard any Shoes songs, but their name was always tossed around. I gotta check them out. There was a band also from the burbs called The Idea and their cd Sideways Smile (1992)-i think its on bandcamp..they are also great pop. And Jellyfish..man o man. Pop perfection. Still kicking myself for missing out on seeing them live when they came to Chicago in the early 90's. Keep up the good work.
Hi Brian! Definitely check out Shoes. Start with Black Vinyl Shoes and work your way forward. Lots of great stuff to explore with them. Jellyfish - definitely pop perfection! Spilt Milk is such a masterpiece! I'll have to check out the Idea! Thanks!
Great job Hanna! I always enjoyed your passion for the genres and bands you are into. Well thought out, well executed and fun video. Nice top ten as well! Just a heads up that Marshall Crenshaw original master recording is on sale over at mofi dot com for 25. Pretty good deal.
"Cool Thanks"😂 What can I say but you have your sh*t down Hanna! Well, you always do but my word, just rattling off gem after gem here. And I don't just mean the music - this is a top notch presentation👌 Interesting history at the beginning, never knew the Townshend genesis of 'power pop'. Can't argue on the 3 Bs though the Beach boys a less obvious one. And then your 'also-rans' was a lengthy, star-studded cast - a few folks faves might be in there!! 😅A few new ones for me as well, so I'll be watching this over and over to pick them off and have a listen (eg, never tried Nick Lowe's solo stuff; the 'UK big star' group fascinates me). And your top 10 was the right mix of classics and surprises. Just a joy to hear you talk about these groups :) Now I'm close to having some music to send you that will straddle both this video and your shoegaze - I don't know if you'll change your top 10 but I think some might make a revised list of you ever feel the need to go down that path. Anyway, fantastic stuff and highly enjoyable, great to see you churning out such goodness. Cheers- Dean
Thanks for the praise on my video, Dean! I spent some time preparing for it. Putting the top 10 together was a bit trying! Glad you liked the presentation. I learned something about Pete coining "power pop," too so I was excited to bring that up! Those early Nick Lowe albums are gold. Honestly, I had never listened to him either until last year and he quickly became a favorite with those 2 albums I showed! You're in for a treat if you've never heard The Records (UK Big Star) :-) I have seen their first album (the US version) around here lots of times for around $5. Hope you can find at least one of their first 2 albums easily over there. Otherwise there is a fantastic CD comp called Smashes, Crashes, and Near Misses that has everything you need on it! Wow, you have some music to send me soon? Power pop and shoegaze?! No way. No doubt that will be an epic bunch of tunes if you are curating it. Love your music taste! Cheers, Dean. You rock!
So many great artists mentioned here: Elvis Costello (1979 - 1983 - unbeatable), Marshall Crenshaw (big fan), Big Star (love 'Thirteen', 'Back of a Car'), XTC, Todd Rundgren, The Knack ('Your Number or Your Name', 'My Sharona'), Raspberries, Posies, Cheap Trick, Nick Lowe ('Switchboard Susan'). I'll have to check out your recommendations. Keep up the good work!
Yes, that period of Elvis Costello albums was just remarkable! I recently found a Raspberries album I had been looking for for a while! Cheers! Power pop forever!
Hey Hanna, fellow powerpop (I prefer calling it 1 word) connoisseur...a friend of mine turned me into your channel & I am hooked...you mention a bunch of my faves (Posies, Jellyfish, Teenage Fanclub, Beach Boys, Raspberries, Big Star, Badfinger, Cheap Trick, Kinks), but one thing you don't are mention much are all-female/female-fronted powerpop bands...that was my big problem with John Borack's book...which I used to have & then traded...practically no females & too many bands that never caught my interest...I know you dig Julianna Hatfield, but there are tons of others...like Veruca Salt, Letters To Cleo, Charlie Bliss, the Muffs... there is a great compilation called "Girls Go Power Pop" which I highly recommend...other fave powerpop bands/artists are Redd Kross, Too Much Joy, Adam Schmitt, Gin Blossoms...and being you mentioned the Rembrandts, Danny Wilde's 3 80s-era solo albums are better and punchier, as well as their early 80s band Great Buildings...and don't forget key 70s powerpop band Artful Dodger...4 killer albums, along the lines of Blue Ash...the 3 Columbia albums are compiled on a great handy 2CD set on Real Gone...and I want your recent magazine... where to order?? Be well & hope to talk music sometime...
Hi Jeff! Thanks so much for watching. I had a lot of fun making this video and there is more power pop to come. In fact, I have a huge power pop update to get to...hopefully by the end of this year. I finally found Something/Anything by Todd on vinyl recently. Cheers!
Greetings from another huge power pop fan. Yup, give me a jangly, clangy guitar and I'm one happy gal. Great overview, so thanks a lot. If you're unfamiliar with it, I suggest you listen to an album called "Don't Make Me Wait" by a band out of Madison, WI called Locksley.. Some fabulous pop tunes and this album puts a smile on my face every time. Thanks again for the great overview. Stay safe and healthy!
Hi Melissa! So nice to have you here! Gotta love that jingle jangle. Thanks for the Locksley recommendation. I always love discovering some new power pop or jangle pop bands. I think I'll be doing a jangle pop video soon as well as a power pop collection update, as I've acquired several more albums in the last month! You stay safe and well! Peace.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Hi again. Hope you enjoy Locksley. One of the things that can put a smile on my face even during this crappy time. OOOOHHH!!! Look forward to videos on jangle pop and more power pop. Like you, I just love all kinds of music and it's the one thing that will get us through this pandemic. Take care and stay safe. Cheers, Melissa.
Wow, I LOVE Locksley!!! Really upbeat and fun. I hope to get a physical copy of Don’t Make Me Wait!!! I really appreciate the recommendation! Super catchy! ❤️🎶🙌
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Yay! Thrilled you like Locksley. In my opinion, that album is just pure joy from start to finish. Always makes me smile and dance around the house. : ) Look forward to more of your videos. Take care and stay safe. Cheers, Melissa
Hi Hanna, this video was very insightful on power pop I very much enjoyed it. I am glad you included one of my favorites bands DBs. I agree about Mathew Sweet. I have that CD and I play it all the time in the car. My kids get annoyed because I am always singing along to it. Marshall Crenshaw is amazing live. A very under rated pop guitarist. You got some cool power pop ones on your list. Replacements score. I have 2 albums by the Bongos. They are hard to explain. Slices of everything and a bit odd. I do enjoy them however. Cheap Trick always loved them. Flamin groovies, I have to check them out. Awesome video Hanna mixing it up you go girl. My favorite top 10 but can cross over into alternative. I would have some more but ones that come to mind: Romantics Weezer Squeeze The Jam Let's Active Hoodu guru's Tommy Keene Blondie Nick Lowe Go Gos Have a great week. My birthday tomorrow. I wish I didn't have to work ugh. Cheers, Flash
Hey there, Gordon! Knew you'd love my take on power pop because you're also a massive fan. Yay, the dB's! Only a few others here know of their greatness! Sing to Matthew Sweet all you want! The Bongos are hard to explain. Love their quirky tunes. In the Congo! You definitely need to hear Shake Some Action from the Flamin' Groovies! Love your list of favorites. I was thinking of including the Jam, but I guess I have lumped them into punk. However, that's not accurate, either. OMG, so many fab power pop songs on Sound Affects...my favorite! Happy birthday tomorrow, my friend!
all that stuff is good, but I'm a big fan of TheJAM, whatever kind of music they're called. 'In the City' ,and This the Modern World' as well as 'all Mod Cons'.if you love TheWHO, you gotta love TheJAM.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert no reply necessary, but 'Shake some action' IS truly a Gem. in fact, when I saw the abbreviation DYI on your "organizing'' video , I thought of that great compilation series from the New Wave/punk era, on Rhino, called DYI. was into college radio big time (that great left side of the dial), when those bands were making some of my favorite music. had those on cassette and CD. rock on.
Hey Hanna. Fantastic video! You did a great job outlining the genre. I definitely learned about new bands/albums that I want to explore in the future. While talking about the influential bands of the 60s that contributed to the foundation of power pop, it's interesting that you mentioned Nazz & The Move. Those two bands had a huge influence on Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick - again confirming your point about the bands contributing to the rise of power pop as a genre. Speaking of Cheap Trick - I loved your take on Heaven Tonight! I think that album completely solidified their identity. Overall, this was a very enjoyable video (as always). Have a great week! Peace.
Thanks for the kind words, Emma! I need to pull out my Move compilation. It's the one with the yellow cover and the moving truck. It's been a while since I've enjoyed their tunes. Super cool that the Move and Nazz influenced Cheap Trick - I can definitely hear it! I couldn't possibly cover every power pop band, but Mazzy filled in a few more blanks that I missed. Cheers!
Peter Case from Plimsouls and Paul Collins from the Beat were in an earlier band called the Nerves, who put out an ep in 1976, I believe. At that time Peter was on bass and Paul was on drums. Jack Lee was the guitar player. Their most famous song (that Lee wrote) was Hanging On The Telephone, later covered by Blondie. The Nerves have a CD containing the ep and various other recordings on Alive Sound. You should check 'em out. You've got most of the ground covered, by the way. Good work. I should also mention that Shoes actually self-released Black Vinyl Shoes (including cutting the actual record). Present Tense and Tongue Twister were on Electra.
Hi there, Ronald! Thanks so much for checking out my power pop video. I also did a collection update and I have another update in the works, but it won't be ready for another month or so. Speaking of the Nerves, I just got an LP of theirs. A compilation of sorts that I REALLY enjoy! So glad I found it. And I finally found an early-ish press of Black Vinyl Shoes on vinyl! Cheers!
Power Pop ruled my childhood and teen years...many years later here I am enjoying the sound. So many artists fall into this sound. I agree the B's were proto power poppers...its closes into so many genres. You nailed it with the whole genre...for me Big Star, Knack, and Cheap Trick are top notch. Cars is new wavy power pop...Shoes is a big example...Jellyfish is a good example to me...skinny ties and shag/ Beatles hairdos is a must lol
Excellent overview and some brilliant albums in your vinyl collection 👍🏻. A fantastic power pop album I highly recommend is Silver Sun’s self-titled debut, which was released in 1997. If you do check the album out, I would love to know what you think of it 😊
Thanks, Christian! I appreciate the recommendation! It's amazing how many solid recommendations my viewers have provided. I write them all down in a notebook and then sample when I get a free moment. I bet Silver Sun will be a fantastic listen! Power pop on! Cheers!
My pleasure! I love nothing more than to recommend albums to fellow music lovers and, judging by your video, I think you would really appreciate the power pop brilliance of Silver Sun. I have found a link on TH-cam to their debut album, so here it is for you to enjoy in all its harmonious glory! Do let me know what you think and happy listening! th-cam.com/video/UHrMubFZ0qM/w-d-xo.html
Great video! Nice job…In my opinion, the 3 greatest power pop songs of all-time are: “Baby Blue” by Badfinger, “Go All The Way” by Raspberries, and “Million Miles Away” by the Plimsouls…
Back in December 2022, Jody Stephens and a bunch of his friends (including Mike Mills, Mitch Easter, Chris Stamey, Jon Auer, and others) got together in Chapel Hill, NC, and did something called "Don't Lie To Me! Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Big Star's #1 Record". They played it front to back, and also played later Big Star songs and solo Alex Chilton and Chris Bell songs. You would have loved it!
Thanks so much for checking out my first power pop video, Robert! Glad you liked it! Sounds like you are a true power pop fan! Would love to hear the Raspberries story sometime. Cheers!
Hey there, Joe! Glad you liked my power pop video! I am planning a few more genre-specific videos. I have been sampling the Nerves on TH-cam and love them. Currently I'm really enjoying the 3-disc Black Vinyl Shoes CD box set I recently bought! Peace.
Love your video. Missing some lady power pop bands. I didn't know what the genre was until this video. Not a Beatles fan, but love the Who. And Mathew Sweet was criminally underrated in the 90s.
Stay tuned! I’ll be featuring some ladies in an upcoming jangle pop video! Thanks so much for watching, Andrew! (I’m not huge into the Beatles, either)! Be well!
Hey Hanna, thanks for the fantastic video on this wonderful music genre. Thanks for mentioning some of my alltime favorite bands. Fountains of Wayne, RIP Adam Schlesinger, The Cars and The Replacements. Would you consider Supergrass as power pop? I'm always on the fence about them, definitely Britpop.
Hey there! Glad you liked my power pop video. I also did an update a few months back. I actually have another massive power pop update video to do in the future! Lots of great stuff I've picked up. Supergrass are definitely a mix of power pop and britpop. Great band! I miss them! Cheers!
This was awesome! I love jangle pop and power pop and am trying to write more song they sort of fall into those genres. Have you listened to The New Pornographers? They are usually considered to be power pop. Listen to The Laws Have Changed off of their album The Electric Version it is very power poppy and is super catchy!
Hey there! Thanks for watching and leaving me a comment, Evan! I really need to stop sleeping on The New Pornographers. I appreciate those 2 album recommendations from them. This gave me the push! Cheers! Side note - I just released my third jangle pop video today to wrap up the series!
The Omaha Introvert Awesome! I saw you release the jangle pop video earlier but didn’t get the chance to watch it yet. Can’t wait to see what bands you discuss in it!
Kudos for mentioning the Plimsouls as well!! We had dance parties at the house when my parents were gone.....and I always played “Zero Hour” to ratchet up the energy. Incomparable
Hi Hanna- Great video ! Very interesting, and you opened my eyes and ears to more power pop! Badfinger was not only a great group, but my first concert ever ! I recommend the album Wish You Were Here by them on Warner Brothers. Something/Anything is probably my all time favorite power pop album. It is great and there's NO DOUBT in my mind that you would enjoy it immensely . Please make a effort to pick it up, you won't be sorry ! Keep putting out these interesting videos. Take care.
Hi Alan. Wow, how incredible that Badfinger were your first concert ever. Must have been pretty memorable. I have Wish You Were Here on vinyl..I am kicking myself for not showing it. I will definitely pick up Something/Anything next time I see it! Take care, and I'm glad you enjoyed my video!
I've just watched your excellent video again and I'm now streaming the Matthew Sweet album you selected. I'm going through albums of the year for another TH-cam channel and we've hit the early 90s so I'm returning to power pop (my refuse from grunge which was too noisy for me back then and certainly too noisy now). As something to do while we're enduring the pandemic, I started cataloguing all my albums and rating them out of 10. It turns out to be a much big task than I'd anticipated but I'm really enjoying digging deeper into my collection rather than sticking with my go-to albums. It's really good to get a female perspective on music. Thinking back to my teens to thirties when I spent far, far too much time in "record shops" as they were known, all the regular browsers flicking through the racks were men. The internet has made it much easier to dig deeply into music but it does take the pleasure away from finding something you've been looking for. Stay safe.
Where did my original response go? Darn it! Thanks for coming back to this video, Paul! What do you think of In Reverse from Matthew Sweet? I really want a vinyl reissue of that one! Brilliant! I prefer power pop over grunge, too, although I still listen to my grunge albums on occasion. Not as much as I used to, though. Have to be in the mood. Love to rank my albums, too. Now that we all have more time because of COVID, I'm just trying to devote more listening time to each album. Trying to listen to a single album over the course of a week to really absorb and appreciate it. Like the old days! Have fun cataloguing and spending more time with the collection! Be well, and stay tuned for a massive power pop collection update..hopefully by the end of the year. Cheers.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert hah. I thought it was only me who suffered disappearing replies. The big problem of building up your album collection is that you have less chance to hear what you have. Unfortunately the hunt for that missing golden treasure continues regardless because there might be something even better than what you have. As I've been listing my albums, I've been forced to accept that there are too many I never got to getting to know properly. A bit sad because I love finding albums that grow on me, getting better every time I hear it. As for the Matthew Sweet album, I grabbed it while I thought about it (see a proper addict) while I'm focusing on albums released in 91/92 this week. Be happy and healthy. Paul
You pretty much nailed it Omaha. Now, try to get these two things: The 12" version of "A Million Miles Away" by the Plimsouls on the Shaky City label, and the #18 Power Pop edition of Greg Shaw's wonderful magazine "Bomp!" from Feb 1978. The record will be inexpensive, the magazine pricy, but it's a classic. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you, Mark. I'll hop on eBay to see what I can find from your recommendations here. I go on eBay too much...I think it's an addiction! I appreciate you watching my power pop first video! More to come soon! Peace.
Great list of albums and bands, some of them are favorites of mine too, but also lots of bands I yet have to discover, Your No.1 is two of the best albums ever made in any category. Another 90’s band worth checking out is Material Issue, their debut album International Pop Overthrow is wonderful. Also check out my band The Alloy Six and our tune Already convinced on youtube (available on vinyl too). Sorry for shameless self promotion. ;)
Thanks so much! It's great to see so many power pop fans come out of the woodwork! Big Star were too amazing for words, right? Material Issue - I somehow have missed them and I've gotten a couple recommendations to check them out. I will check out your band. Thank you for being here!
The Omaha Introvert It’s impossible to keep track on all bands. I just recently discovered Material Issue myself. Sort of a tragic history as it did not end well for them, similar to Badfinger.
What are your favorite power pop bands/albums?!
The Omaha Introvert Matthew sweet. Cheap trick school of fish. Squeeze. The lemonheads if you consider them power pop pavement.
I agree with Steve on School Of 🐟 ! 3 Strange Days is Awesome !
Big star and Jellyfish. Have you heard speed of sound alternate version of the Chris Bell boxset? Omg
😉
Always great to have more Matthew Sweet fans. I don't know why I forgot Squeeze. Some Lemonheads songs are definitely power pop! Thanks, Steve!
Power pop is the best genre :) Great overview. Nick Lowe is also up there for me. Have you done any reviews or rundowns of modern power pop bands? I've really grown to like White Reaper, and also Kurt Baker's got some pretty good stuff out there.
Love many of the bands you spoke of, try Hoodoo Gurus, Split Endz, Crowded House, btw Smithereens recorded 2 Beatles covers albums fun stuff. ☮️
The band "SHOES" and their album "Black Vinyl Shoes" is a classic power pop record.
Yes indeed! In a few other power pop videos I did I feature Black Vinyl Shoes...both the CD box set as well as an early vinyl copy I found! I love them!
I thought I'd slot this comment in here rather than start a new one, I'm pleased that someone pointed out the name of the band is ''SHOES'' (not the Shoes)
ther is no 'the' in their name. Though it's an easy mistake to make
(see common mistake, Eagles often called 'The' Eagles, there isn't any 'The' in their name also'),
I think there is a different band called 'The Shoes', so watch out when you search for ''SHOES'' @@TheOmahaIntrovert
cheers🎸
love that you mention the Records!
Peace.
Good rundown of bands
Squeeze offBroadway early Motels,ThePop
54/40 Phil Seymour,Dwight Twilley as some other favs I recall off the top of my head
The Nerves you mentioned before they split and became The Plimsouls and The Beat
The Easybeats - Friday on my Mind
The Move - Messages from the Country
Big Star - Radio City
Badfinger - Wish You Were Here
Bram Tchaikovsky - Strange Man, Changed Man
Cheap Trick - In Color
The Grays - Ro Sham Bo
Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen
Sloan - Navy Blues
Weezer - Maladroit
The Raspberries and The Cars are great, but best served in a hits collection.
I love 70’s 80’s Power Pop is great some of my favorites are Cheap Trick , Dwight Twilley Band ,Phil Seymore all time amazing singers
Tom Petty , Records , the rubinoos , 20/20,The shoes The only ones , the undertones, The flaming groovies,The star jets ,Teenage fan club , Ash , Rockpile ,The headboys Thanks for asking !
So glad you mentioned that 20/20 s/t record. That is a favorite of mine i just discovered at the beginning of 2021. Fantastic record!
Oh yes, everyone should own that 20/20 album! Glad you discovered them!
Hi Sam! No way that your dad plays keyboards for Nada Surf! Very rad! Love them so much! Their new album from last year was stunning, too! Peace.
Huge Nada Surf fan right here! Your dad rules!
Thanks, Mazzy! Very cool you did a response. I'll hop on over when I can. Nick Lowe as your #1 is pretty solid! Cheers!
Great Australian band, actually have a new album coming out soon, though only their first few albums are strictly power pop.
99 cents is a steal for Hoodoo Gurus! I recently found their "Magnum Cum Louder" release on CD for $1 or $2. Love that band! Cheers!
Looking forward to checking out their new LP!
Peace
👍🎶👌✌️
Cheers!
I found my people!!
Great video. Another ones of my favorites
Dwight Twilley Band - Sincerely
Phil Seymour - Phil Seymour
Jack Green - Humanesque
Earth Quake - Levelled
Joe Jackson - I'm the man
The Motors - Approved by
Ooooo, how did I forget Humanesque from Jack Green!

Joe un grande..top 5 los tres primeros, night and day y rain)
Cheers!
I started listening to Sloan when they released Action Pact and opened for Jet! Remember when Jet's song was all over those Apple commercials ?!
Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovertI had fun doing a response video, maybe we will see a thread get going, could be fun!
Great video. Excellent list of bands/albums.
So amazed every time about the knowledge you have into so many genres which only defines the love you have for music. Thanks for sharing your enthousiasm.
Thank you so much, Phil! Glad my passion for the music comes through on these videos! Power pop on!
Cool video! Interesting top ten power pop selection.
RIP Dave.
I heard this yesterday. What sad news! Love his work with the Rain Parade and Mazzy Star. 😫😫 R.I.P.
Hi Hanna
Very good video you did a fine job defining Power Pop which is quite difficult to do.
I recommended Stiv Bators (
Dead Boys, Lords of New church) album Disconnected (1980,Bomb!) with Frank Secich from Blue Ash in guitar. Its a great power pop album with a cool album cover.
Thanks, Kristofer! In the last year I obtained the first album from Lords of the New Church and the Dead Boys. Great stuff! Stiv is awesome!
Hi Hanna,
Always fun to see some new videos from you.
My Top 10:
10 - Squeeze - East Side Story
9 - Badfinger - Straight Up (Yes, tragic in so many ways....)
8 - Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
7 - Nick Lowe - Jesus of Cool
6 - Cheap Trick - Live at Budakan
5 - Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything
4 - The Knack
3 - XTC - Skylarking
2 - The Raspberries - Greatest
1 - The Cars (debut) (As you said.... a perfect album....)
Thank you for doing this ,
God bless,
Tino
Luckily you can sample plenty of Big Star for free on TH-cam or Spotify in the meantime. :-)
Girl of My Dreams. Excellent tune
Cotton Mather!!! I forgot about them!!!! I’ve sampled their stuff before! You are too kind, my friend. That soap is on the way soon! 🙌
Wow the flashing lights. Nice to see you promoting them. Classic. Just got the Heats - have an idea 1980 band. Fantastic.
I just discovered your channel, and it made my day!! Your description of Jellyfish was perfect.
Thanks, Adam! Jellyfish for the win, right? Love them so much and miss 'em!
Thank you for introducing a few bands from your list I surprisingly never heard of before! You've good taste in music!
Thanks, Adam! So glad you're checking out my power pop series! These were fun to do! Power pop on!
Peace.
Doing some video searches for Shoes and came across your channel. So glad I did!
Right on, Jeff! So glad you stumbled upon my channel, too. Shoes forever! What a group! Rock on!
Thanks so much, Scott! I'll check out the Cavedogs!
I definitely am into subgenres of rock! Glad you are learning a bit from these videos! :-) Rock on, and thanks so much for the comment, as always!
Nicely done! If you think “Pleased to Meet Me” is good, you haven’t heard their (the Replacements’) masterpiece. “Let It Be”. Do not miss, outstanding
Hi there! Oh, I have Let it Be on vinyl. Love the 'Mats! Cheers!
Thank you for this. Not a lot of power pop related videos out there… super cool to see a random Jellyfish mention. I love when people love Jellyfish
Thanks, Brandon! Jellyfish were so amazing. Really wish they would do another run of vinyl reissues! Cheers!
new to your excellent videos, did you ever mention the crash street kids - little girls (1982)
Kudos to Big Star taking the #1 spot. ..also the bit about Chris Bell's solo LP. Love the track You and Your Sister.
Yes The Beat and 20/20 for sure. Richard Barone solo album. Cool Blue Halo. so good.
I don't have Cool Blue Halo; just Primal Dream.
Made up genres? I am a bit intrigued, but I understand how that would be too lengthy to type out! Rock on, Alejandro!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert of course, well I could send you the excel archive somehow, is that possible on you tube? Or send me an email, just say "hi Im Hanna" then I will send you the list on excell aleriverac1@gmail.com
Bram Tchaikovsky's Girl Of My Dreams is quintessential power pop. If you don't own any Bram it is worth buying. Great channel and I subscribed!
Thanks so much for the sub! The only Bram T. album I have is Funland and I need to get more. Cheers!
Very good video,I didn't know Pete coined the term power pop.I first heard it in late 70s describing bands like the shoes, records, etc.
Hi Chester! Yeah, isn't it cool that Pete came up with the power pop term! I'm glad you enjoyed this video! Take care.
Love the Plimsouls. Need to get on the Big Star train. Have a great week Hanna. Andre’
Thanks, Andre. Hope you had a fun weekend. Oh man, you definitely need to get to spinning some Big Star! :-) Cheers!
Good video. :)
Thanks Lawrence! So great you got to see the Knack in the 90s! Must’ve been a wonderful show! 🎸✌️
Oh I forgot to mention, all band members signed my copy of their album and 45 record jacket.
Thank you so very much, Bill! Glad you dug my top 10. I'm super tempted to get that Marshall Crenshaw MOFI. Wow! Hope all is well, my friend!
Wow you mentioned my all time two faves back-to-back. Todd Rundgren and Elvis Costello.
Cheers,
Melissa
I would have some more but ones that come to mind:
Romantics
Weezer
Squeeze
The Jam
Let's Active
Hoodu guru's
Tommy Keene
Blondie
Nick Lowe
Go Gos
Have a great week.
Yes, the bongos. Numbers with wings, especially

Pretty extensive video....well done....actually I have them all.....I have a Raspberries story to tell....maybe next time!
Thanks so much for checking out my first power pop video, Robert! Glad you liked it! Sounds like you are a true power pop fan! Would love to hear the Raspberries story sometime. Cheers!
Great list and honorable mentions. I bet you'll love The Nerves (if you haven't gotten to them already). Thanks for the great video. Cheers.
They were an energetic band, the Plimsouls! I just listened to Everywhere at Once again last week! Brilliant!
As I've been listing my albums, I've been forced to accept that there are too many I never got to getting to
know properly.
