- The new-generation Nissan Qashqai could well reset the benchmark for small SUVs in Australia.
This is a great little crossover - certainly more practical than a Mazda CX-30 or Toyota C-HR, and a bit more interesting inside and out than a Toyota Corolla Cross and even the Kia Seltos.
I was super impressed by a lot of things about this car - it is really practical, comfortable and easy to drive. But with prices higher than ever before, does it justify the cost?
Watch and find out... but honestly, spoiler alert: this could be the right car for plenty of SUV buyers.

I’ve had my Qashqai for five months. I have top of the range, Tekna + here in the Uk. Slightly different specification, too the top of the range in Australia. All the petrol engines have mild hybrid and you can get all wheel drive versions. Because my car has 20 inch wheels it has MultiLink suspension on the rear. This makes it great fun to drive. Not many of my previous cars, gave me the level of poise on the road, or the level of equipment and tech, my Qashqai has. I think you would probably be looking at a premium manufacturer for anything as good as the Qashqai, but then you will be spending twice as much. Long journeys are a breeze. Leaving you feeling fresh at the end. No other car I have owned left me feeling that way. The semi autonomous, driving system, is amazing. Obviously you have to keep your hands on the wheel and cover the pedals, but once it is set you can relax and let the car do the driving, if you want it to. Leaving you to enjoy the 10 speaker, Bose sound system, playing your favourite music or listening to podcasts. I know this is sad, but I actually look for excuses, to go for a drive. How many cars, make you feel that way? 😊
Good for you, Steve. So glad you’re loving your Qashqai. You’re right - it’s rare to find a car that makes you want to go for a drive just for the sake of it.
I wish they offered the all-wheel drive version here - though I think the market has determined FWD will do for the majority of people looking at small SUVs.

I currently drive a2014 Qashqai, and it is a great little allrounder and this new model certainly makes me think it is time to upgrade 👍🏻

Thanks Matt - I’ve owned many Subarus for their excellent road manners and safety - recently I spent a few days on windy roads in TAS driving a current model Qashqai rental and have to say I was impressed with its road manners, good brakes, interior fit-out and economy with the CVT - very spacious inside like my Forester - I’d be happy for my daughters to own and drive one.
As a dad with a daughter, I can relate. Mine is only 20 months. But I know what you’re getting at! Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the outstanding review. Not many reviewer talk about 'real world' fuel consumption. Perhaps this can be further improved by driving around a suburb where there are a combination of uphill and downhill roads or highway, include this in your fuel consumption too. You talked about the boot space and showed the spare tyre too. Well done! Most reviewers dont talk about this either. Keep up the good work.
Your choice of reviewing the ST-L variant is also a good one. Not many people have the money to buy the top expensive variant.

Thanks for the feedback mate. I live in a a pretty hilly area (blue mountains outside of Sydney) so that real world fuel use is reflective of that.

Great review mate and loving the channel. Do you recall the Qashqai having a quiet or noisy ride? I like the internal cabin to be quiet so this could be a dealbreaker despite all the other positives.

Funny old world when something as simple as rear doors on a family car opening wide,is something manufacturers didn't seem to design on day 1,page 1 of the design brief.
It is. There’s so much more to structures of safety cells and even pillars and hinges these days. It makes a great impression when a car can be super practical but still mega safe.
Just wondering what do you think was reflecting the light onto your face?
We've been on the hunt for a mid-sized SUV (all 2023 models), around the $42-45k range and that gives you so many options. At this stage we have 2 finalists - Qashqai ST-L (so a very useful review) and the VW Tiguan entry model (110 TSI Life). Qashqai comfortable ride and modern looking but boot capacity on the smaller side. Tiguan - comfy seats, plenty of storage and nice to drive but dated/small centre console screen.
Others we tried - Ford Puma nice looking from outside but too basic on the inside, Toyota wait times too long, Hyundai Tucson centre console dug into my knee as the driver, Kia Sportage SX - seats not that comfy, Mitsubishi Outlander LS felt too big, Mazda CX-5 - exterior design could be better, loved the inside look however then found out it's not a touch screen so have to control everything with the central control knob which is a right pain.
So, what’s the decision? And have you tried a Honda ZR-V??
Qashai ST-L (although havent put down a deposit yet), and weighing up if the $4k premium over the ST+ is worth it. Sounds like it is just to avoid the plastic steering wheel.
2 concerns about the new Qasqai is that we haven't actually spotted one on the roads yet and in the ST-L the fabric part of the seats feels synthetic and rough, and gives off a cheap feel (fussy I know!).
Hmm we haven't tried a Honda yet so now you've thrown a spanner into the works 😂
Isn't this a tiny SUV? Mid-size would be something like a Toyota Fortuner.

Have been watching the odd youtube reviews over the last 12 months (from here and abroad)
Went to the showroom couple months ago and they only had the ST-L and the Ti
Wife quite likes it, although prices have gone up
We looked at Kona and Stonic also
Might wait til after our o'seas trip (Aug/Sep) then see what deals are around

Yep, the new-gen Kona will be out by the time you get back from o/s, and so will Crosstrek from Subaru, not to mention the MG4 electric car, if that’s on your radar. Glowing reports out of Europe on that one - I can’t wait to review it here.

Nice review Matt, I've been struggling the whole past two months to choose between CX-5 , Outlander & Qashqai, Cx-5 has a nice automatic transmission but not many safety features, Outlander is so nice but the hood flutter is an issue, and Qashqai is a little bit smaller than them regarding the cargo space, PLEASE, help me to choose.
Okay. How much do you need a big boot? If the answer is “not much” or “I don’t”, then buy the Qashqai.
If the answer is closer to “I use the boot to store big stuff all the time!”, buy the Outlander.

I test drove the Tekna ePower (UK), and it blows the 1.3 CVT version out of the water. It's so quiet, smooth and 0-62mph in 7.9s, which is the same for the most powerful EV ID.3 Tour.
It's just 1 pure electric power train, with a 1.5 turbo petrol generator and small battery 2.2 KW.
The engine was taken from the Nissan premium Infiniti brand, and is rated in the top 10 worlds best ICE engines, with a acclaimed thermal efficiency of around 50%.
The ICE is finely tuned for the job of electrical generation, with no need to provide low end torque a drive shaft.
On an urban 1h test drive in the northwest of England, the ICE was off for 80% of the time, and managed around 61mpg UK.
I placed an order for one, start of February 2023. Expected delivery around end of April/early May 2023.

I placed an order for the 1.5 epower on the 1st of May 2023, so it is coming up to 3 months now ... but I know they are having problems getting the semiconductors for all cars

At the top spec, a Lexus UX200 would be a better buy. Nisan has done an amazing job on this and the new X-Trail though. Great review mate!

Interesting you pointed out the glove box misalignment. I test drove one and the overhead control panel for the sunroof was misaligned.
On a brand new car? A fail for the quality control from Nissan.
Yeah it should be better than that. We get our Qashqai out of Sunderland, UK, so maybe not as exacting in its standards of build quality as the Japanese plants.
Hi Matt....I need to ask you something. Is it realistically a viable idea to go for electric car without home charging and completely dependent on public dc charging. I live in victoria and my weekly run is around 300km. I looking to book BYD Seal....please advise...Thanks
Hi mate. Why wouldn’t you get a charger at home? It’ll be the most convenient $2000 you spend.
That’s my advice. If you’re buying an EV, make sure you can charge it fast at home. If not, you’re risking getting stuck in waiting for chargers.
Thanks for the reply Matt. However my apologies. I forgot to mention that i live in apartment and there is no facility for installation of charger. More so next year i have plans to move to liverpool NSW and there too in an apartment. So in a way I can safely gather that you wouldn't advise to go for an EV without home charger.
It’s hard to make a case for the qashqui vs it’s big brother the xtrail. The xtrail has a much more comfortable ride and more room for around the same price. When factoring in the higher price of premium fuel the qashqui requires, the fuel cost is not much less than the xtrail either.
I disagree. I think if you need seven seats, or AWD that’s the only reason you should choose X-Trail over Qashqai. Qashqai is a better car in pretty much every possible way.

Qashqai also doesnt have the ugly brown interior. Its the main reason for me why i chose a qashqai over the x trail 😂
The CVT was the killer for me. I would buy the Kia Seltos 1.6 turbo with conventional 8 speed auto.
Hoping the CVT and DCT will fade into history .Some car companies are starting to ditch them.

The turbo component is just as likely to break as the Qashqai cvt transmission. At least with the CVT you can maintain it with very frequent NS3 oil changes. Very expensive but doable. Turbos, not so much...
Matt, if you had to choose between the Qashqai and the new Crosstrek (like I’m trying to do right now) - what would you do
Qashqai. It feels like more of a leap and bound than the Crosstrek. Qashqai is a lovely car!

I’d probably prefer to live with the Kia’s powetrain, because I rate that 2.0L+CVT.
But! This Nissan is very good - the low speed lag could be annoying at times, but overall it feels like a nicer car.
I've just ordered the 1.5 e power I find it far superior over the 1.3 expensive yes but I personally think its a game changer
Cool, Craig! Good for you mate. I think the e-Power is a strange idea, but I really hope its more efficient in your Qashqai than it was in the X-Trail I just drove (6.7L/100km - SERIOUSLY!?!)

If you need a big back seat and boot, get a Tucson. If those aren’t huge priorities for you, get the Qashqai.

Here to see if this thing is going to work for a few vacation days in Ireland. It was the largest vehicle that the rental company offers, and fitting 4 adults with luggage looks like it is going to be very tight. The same 4 adults with more luggage fit easily in my wife's Lexus GX460 (Land Cruiser Prado 150). It seems very small to live with day to day unless it is your second or third vehicle.
It’s not that small - but if you’re used to a larger car it will feel compact.

Hard to say since it’s brand new. But it does seem that Nissans are prone to transmission issues.
Another good alternative would be the Skoda Karoq personally. It generally feels more premium in the Karoq and has an 8 speed auotomatic
It has been stripped of standard safety gear though, and is too expensive comparatively. It USED to be a great alternative. Now it’s just an also-ran.
If it is your money, which small SUV would you buy? Plus which model????
I would order a Corolla Cross GXL Hybrid.
And I’d shop around in rural or regional dealers to see if there’s stock.
If it was URGENT, I’d buy a Ford Puma. It’s bloody good.
for me the Puma just didn't have the premium feel. Interior was too basic, especially compared to new Qashqai@@therightcar
don't by one with 19 " wheels its very hard ride & drifts on the rd go for 18 " plus the motor revs up when your idle ??? its a hybrid that you cant charge their is no point ; but a great car to drive with the auto & E Brake :

mg zst has 6-speed automatic transmission from Asin which is the transmission manufacturer for toyota. Say no to cvt transmission car

@@therightcar I don't put the Qashqai in the small SUV, its Mid. They have the Juke for that the small SUV.
The Qashqai sits with the Tuscan, Sportage, Kadjar, Honda CRV, Toyota Rav 4, Ford Kuga, Pug 3008 etc
