I believe the actual reason why he was assassinated is because he had already started appointing blacks to his cabinet, and the powers that be needed to keep the races divided for their final plan to work. And it's working great as we speak.
Garfield is actually my favorite president, and I'm glad he's from my state, too. 😊 Fun Fact: President Garfield was so Intelligent, one of his favorite parlor tricks was to write in Latin in one hand, while writing in Greek in the other, at the same time!
James A. Garfield would've probably gone down in history as one of America's greatest presidents if he wasn't assassinated. But now, he's remembered just as a historical footnote or an answer to a trivia question, it's a massive shame really
James Garfield was a highly intelligent and impressive man who had he lived would possibly be remembered as a great President who changed the course of American history.
@CrazyDinosaur Good person kinda Cringe ngl. Everyone knows to be a notable American politician you gotta have those black airforces, and dawg in you.
Garfield's rise to the presidency, his battle against corruption within his party, and his assassination are reminiscent of Roman emperor Pertinax, a Roman senator who took the throne after the death of Commodus, was a strict military man and sought to reform the thoroughly corrupt Praetorian Guard, and was subsequently murdered by the Guard as a result. History unfortunately repeating itself.
Cool observation. Funny thing is their deaths had opposite impacts on their respective systems. At least Garfield's death inspired reform to be enacted. Pertinax's death brought war and the Severian dynasty who corrupted and spoiled the military.
You left out one detail: Garfield gave the nominating speech at the convention for Sherman. But he had been kept so busy that he had no opportunity to write a speech! He delivered the speech extemporaneously- and was so eloquent that it played a significant role in stampeding the convention. I wonder whether Doctor Doctor Bliss was Joseph Heller's inspiration for the character of the inept Major Major in CATCH-22!
I lived in Garfield County, Nebraska for the first 18 years of my life. It was established in 1884 and was named after this president. I also was a huge fan of Garfield the cat, who was named (and modeled) after Jim Davis's grandfather (James Garfield Davis), who was named after this president (so indirectly Garfield the cat was named after this president). Awesome video, the best refsource about James Garfield I has ever heard or seen.

Mistakes are only mistakes if you repeat them - yeah I know, blah blah blah. But at 57 with many bad turns in life behind me, I can say it's absolutely worth carrying on. I'm twice divorced and no financial security left but I'm much happier having worked out the big why to my mistakes. Keep strong ⭐

I’ve listened to a few episodes surrounding President Garfield’s assassination, presidency, & other intriguing facts, but yours seems most accurate. Thank you.

If you ever find yourself in the Cleveland, Ohio area, there's a lot to still see for many of the presidents that came from the area. Pertinent to the video: the Garfield House can be found in Mentor, Ohio and is a museum. Also, for the ghost hunters viewing the video, one of the more haunted locations in Northeast Ohio. The Garfield memorial is located within Lake View Cemetery just outside of the little Italy neighborhood of Cleveland. The cemetery itself is a wonder of beautiful sculpture and statues, gardens and artwork. It is truly the definition and example of a memorial garden. The Garfield Memorial itself is a very impressive structure and has an unparalleled view of downtown Cleveland and the lakefront. If you visit, also be sure to look out the famous headstones including Eliott Ness, Allen Freed, Carl Stokes and more. The most stunning piece of headstone art is the Haserot Angel of Death Triumphant. Many, many pictures are taken of this headstone, so simply Google it to get an idea, but seeing it in person is the best way. The depth of power this statue has cannot be expressed without witnessing it yourself. For those who see only the picture, to give you an idea of scale, the angel is equivalent to a full sized person of the time of installation (around 5'4") seated. Another impressive presidential memorial, within driving distance, is McKinley. His memorial is located in Canton, Ohio.
There's so much more to Bliss' incompetence. The shot was nonlethal. If Garfield was just patched up, he probably would have been fine. Moreover, Alexander Graham Bell made a metal detector to try to find the bullet, but Bliss only let Bell examine half of Garfield's body. On top of this, the bed Garfield was lying in had metal springs.
Not two weeks ago, a friend and I went to Lake View Cemetery to visit and take photos. One of the places we stopped at was Garfield's memorial. It is undergoing renovations so we couldn't go inside but the exterior building is just beautiful. I was delighted to see this video come so soon after that visit#
Outstanding video. My only critique is that I wish you would’ve gone into it just a little more history about the assassin who shot him in terms of how he was a failure at everything he tried, including the free, love commune, being a preacher, etc.
Truly an inspirational video, for more reasons than one. Today's political environment in America and the world. But probably just as personally noteworthy, I was raised on Garfield Drive across from Garfield Park Indianapolis. Never studied or wondered about Garfield. This provides a positive thought in my head 65+ years later. I hope it will provide peace and inspiration for awhile. Wish all well.

I've been to his mausoleum at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. It is such a beautiful shrine to him, especially considering how little he was able to accomplish in office. You should definitely check it out if you have the chance.
His final letter to his mother, where he told that while still weak and on his back, he felt like he was getting better every day, adding "I need only time and patience to get through," It was the ultimate manifestation of the "what if" aspect of his Presidency. Particularly if he had been treated properly by his doctors
I've read that in the years immediately following his death, Garfield's assassination was treated as a tragedy on the order of Lincoln's. There are resemblances to how Kennedy's assassination affected America.

Hey Simon and team, I love the channel. I can't get enough of it. Just wanted to thank you for the content and add a suggestion for a video. I think you'd be very compelled by the story of composer Alexander Scriabin. Lincoln’s son was walking with Garfield when he was shot. That had to have been a rough time for him.
There is a dreadful irony in another witness to Garfield's assasination--Robert Todd Lincoln, his Secretary of War. Abraham Lincoln's son.

I teach 8th grade history and taught my students that President Garfield was assassinated. He was not an orange cat that slept all day eating lasagna that hated Mondays. One of my students asked “Why does he hate Mondays? Did he die on a Monday?!” Lol 😂
He did actually die on a monday.
American dad taught me about this guy haha great video !
Interesting biography
Simon, please make a video about L'Inconnue de la Seine (The Unknown Woman of the Sein).
Garfield was known as a lover of lasagna and a hater of Mondays.
Guiteau: "I didn't kill President Garfield, I just opened up the door for death to walk right in."
🤨
Do a video on Marcus Garvey please 🙏
My biggest "what if president" would have to be RFK. Any chance you could cover him in a video?
He already did it alongside Sirhan Sirhan
@@TwentyNinerR I knew about the Sirhan one but not the RFK one. Thanks for the heads up!
Please cover some British or Canadian Prime Ministers!
yeah I only found about this one recently...truthfully, for such a young nation, the US has had way too many presidents already I'd say
please do one on saint thomas aquinas if you havent already
Dude you are like … everywhere… Cheers!!! 🍻
Picture of Andrew Johnson who was impeached, says Andrew Jackson who passed away over 20 years prior to that.
I love this channel, but good god, the ads are absolutely relentless
I didn’t know any of this about him 💯
