When naming their first child, my parents went with a biblical name, Benjamin, and a family name, Harrison.
13 years later, their third child would ask them why they named him after a rather forgettable president. They had no idea.
They did think it sounded presidential, just had no idea how presidential.

Probably a lot more decent than any politician today. Most men of those days had their vices, but they had honor and read books especially the Bible. My great great grandfather was a confederate soldier, lost a brother in the war, was a POW twice, but he fought with honor and for what he believed in. I don’t agree with somethings he believed in such as his views on race but I honor his memory

Yes Benjamin Harrison was always the donut hole in between Grover Cleveland's presidencies and the grandson of the guy who had the shortest run as us president. But nothing about his presidency was ever really taught. Sadly he was a very good guy who just couldn't get past Congress and isn't as well known because so many others around him were flashier. This is all that I know of him
      The Good:
      1. Pendleton Act, which abolished the spoils system and government jobs were handed out based on merit. It also created the Civil Service Commission
      2. Improved the navy
      3. Edmunds Act
      4. Increased funding for Native American education
      5. Recognized Korean independence
      6. Oversaw the dedication of the Washington Monument
      7. Bureau of Labor established
      8. Banned criminals from immigrating to the US through the Immigration Act of 1882
      9. Because of an international convention called by Chester Alan Arthur, representatives from 25 countries agreed to pick a single standard meridian. They chose the meridian passing through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England
      The Bad:

      1. Chinese exclusion act
      2. Basically everything else about the Immigration Act of 1882

As someone who lived for trekking in Yosemite and Kings Canyon at every opportunity, I am grateful to Harrison for preserving the Wilderness that he did. The two giant Sequoias named after Grant and Sherman still stand right where they did the first time I saw them in 1974. And even though I live far away and my hiking days are long gone, knowing those trees still stand and will be there after I am long gone makes me happy. As long as there is still wilderness where no one goes, I will be happy. That's how it should be. So Thanks President Harrison! 🙂👍🏻🌲🏔🌲🏔

thanks for this. I did a paper on Benjamin Harrison in grade school. I picked him because he served one term and didn't think I be overwhelmed with information. I was also intrigued by the fact that he was the one that split up Grover Cleveland's two terms. That paper left me with memory of this one term president that I never forgot.

Suppose that you were sitting down at this table. The napkins are in front of you, which napkin would you take? The one on your ‘left’? Or the one on your ‘right’? The one on your left side? Or the one on your right side? Usually you would take the one on your left side. That is ‘correct’ too. But in a larger sense on society, that is wrong. Perhaps I could even substitute ‘society’ with the ‘Universe’. The correct answer is that ‘It is determined by the one who takes his or her own napkin first.’ …Yes? If the first one takes the napkin to their right, then there’s no choice but for others to also take the ‘right’ napkin. The same goes for the left. Everyone else will take the napkin to their left, because they have no other option. This is ‘society’… Who are the ones that determine the price of land first? There must have been someone who determined the value of money, first. The size of the rails on a train track? The magnitude of electricity? Laws and Regulations? Who was the first to determine these things? Did we all do it, because this is a Republic? Or was it Arbitrary? NO! The one who took the napkin first determined all of these things! The rules of this world are determined by that same principle of ‘right or left?’! In a Society like this table, a state of equilibrium, once one makes the first move, everyone must follow! In every era, this World has been operating by this napkin principle. And the one who ‘takes the napkin first’ must be someone who is respected by all. It’s not that anyone can fulfill this role… Those that are despotic or unworthy will be scorned. And those are the ‘losers’. In the case of this table, the ‘eldest’ or the ‘Master of the party’ will take the napkin first… Because everyone ‘respects’ those individuals.”
