I just recently setup one of my servers to do all my routing and firewalling and then the dreaded Strict NAT on my console! Thank you so much for this VERY informative video! This guide is the best one out there for obtaining OPEN NAT... Seriously, thank you!!
I could not get two PS5 to sit on NAT type 2 without your helpful video. Whichever tried first would get 2, the other would get 3. Great video! Thanks!
I was reading a reddit post on how to do this, and gave up and went to youtube, and lo my favourite UNRAID channel has exactly what I needed. This channel is essential.
Have been trying to change my PS4's NAT Type from 3 to 2 for a long time, chasing many different tutorials. The only tutorial that helped was this one. A million thanks! Subscription confirmed!
I wanted to send my thanks for this video series. My OpnSense system (on old PC) died this weekend and I decided to try pfSense on another old PC. It worked great. I mainly appreciated the instruction on changing the dashboard, setting up the interfaces and adding the firewall rules. Your explanations are very straightforward and easy to follow. Thanks again!
Thanks for talking about "dumping the states", that finally got my NAT back to open so I can play remotely again on my Xbox One. I was almost ready to reinstall pfSense on my router.
holy shit - god bless your soul. There's this game, PixArk for PC. I run on a server on my LAN. I can't connect to it because for some reason , the game insists on only supporting WAN ip's, not LAN ip's. You video helped me solve this. The rule you explained also works for other PC's on the LAN. Thanks again.
WOW. This needs to be a pin on pfsense forms. Do you understand how many DAYS not hours DAYS i've tried to get the damn thing to work with multiple consoles without manually forwarding every port? An 8 minute video just solved it thanks to you and someone on the form who finally saw one of my posts and gave me this link. For some reason if you have a vpn (even bypass it with a rule) and use upnp or have multiple consoles, you get "nat failed" or strict so you have to manually do it. The whole time this video was buried here with all three fixes.
Very nice video. I appreciate the extra security tips regarding the Default Deny rule and ACL list, as well as the dual console setup! I am going definitely check out your other videos. Cheers
It’s been a while since the last pfsense video, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for pfsense-PIA VPNs as well as vlans with multiple SSIDs. Great work! Keep it up!
Well done! I had to figure all of this out via looking all over the web. I pretty much did exactly the same except w/o alias and I currently do not have NAT reflection on. I do have NAT + Proxy on, I think that was to fix a Plex problem I had.
This was a really awesome video. Very straight forward with the config. I will say though I couldnt get my consoles to pass a NAT test at first. Seems I had to create a rule in my firewall to allow the traffic outbound. After I did it though, everything works.
The whole reset states thing is exactly what it took for all of this to work. I've tried a few different ways and it never began working, so I imagine that would have done it for all of my tries. Thanks for being the first source to show that. A reboot also would have worked I assume?
im hoping I could have some help. So I have set up my Xbox, friends pc and my pc under the same alias. I have them all under the same port ranges and everything. I think I followed the tutorial exactly. The issue I am running into is that when all three of us are trying to play in a squad, my pc will not connect to online servers in Call of duty modern warfare
Really enjoying your video's. Looking for one one on PLex and making sure outside users can still access, also looking forward to video on Open VPN on pfSense and making sure you still have everything working and how to bypass for certain computer games / consoles. etc. Keep up the great work.
Another great video, after slowly acquiring the bits for my own (VM) router I ploughed through these in no time at all! I hope more are under way. OpenVPN would be my choice for the next one, or VLANS, or pretty much anything - I'll watch it!
Hi Leuan. Yes more pfsense videos very soon. I just had to take a break from them to make some for people not using pfSense. And OpenVPN clients and server will be next pfSense topic. Thanks for watching :)
Thank you so much! This series has helped me get my pfSense box running with some reasonable settings and tips and tricks to expand on my own on. Is there any chance you are gonna do the PIA VPN video you promised in the first video? >.< That would be super great and helpful!
Thanks, with your tutorial I could easily change my NAT type from strict to moderate on my PS5. I just started to use OPNsense, so this made it really easy to understand the NAT settings, port mapping and firewall rules for console gaming :) Edit: ingame it says NAT type open 👍
Hey I've got a question. You opened up a heck of a lot of ports on firewall and ACL. I thought you would only need UPD port 3074 opened. I was wondering if you could verify this since clearly limiting open ports would probably better.
Great series. Can you also make a vid on setting up a different VPN for each LAN connection? Like you said, IoT to a VPN, basic devices another VPN, etc.
Great video! My PS4 was NAT type 3. Followed these steps on latest pfsense and it changed to NAT type 2. Is that the best I should expect or am I missing something? My PS4 already had a static ip address so I skipped the DHCP mapping part in the beginning.
Hi Ed, Thank you for the pfSense video tutorials, it has helped me start with pfSense, and make my life a lot easier. However, I am stuck on VLAN and openVPN, could you please create those videos? Thanks, Sagun
Great series and has got my pfsense up and running. Any news on vpn video? Thats the one issue at the moment, have it running but cant access my other lans! :( Thanks for all your unraid help
any chance we can get a Dynamic DNS/OpenVPN setup video on pfsense. The previous videos on you have on these topics are incredible. But for those of us who have pfsense, both services are available and a video about this for this series would be great. 🙏🙏
I performed these steps on my gaming PC, will this introduce any major security issues? After completing these steps my NAT changed from strict to open!
I followed this video but for OPNsense and it all works fine, except I have two PCs playing the same game on the same network and they still clash.. so one will connect and the other one will get an error and won't connect. I followed the video right to the end and it's only the last bit I'm stuck on.. on OPNsense I ticked the boxes for Reflection for port forwards and Automatic outbound NAT for reflection but OPNsense doesn't have a drop down menu to select PureNAT and that's where I'm stuck and what I think the problem is. Any help would much appreciated 🙏
Hey man, is this broken with the newer versions of pfsense?, i cannot get the nat to moderate or open on multiple devices in the same game, only 1 device can connect at a time even with nat reflection, i followed all of ur steps and many other solutions on the internet and none seems to work, more than 2 months and still cannot get it to work, im using version 2.4.5-p1
What happen to the Automatic NAT rules @2:52 ???? they for every device on the network. Does this mean xbox one and ps4 are not using NAT? or they are the onlyone using NAT? or they using another type of NAT?
Thanks for great set of videos on pfSense. this help me setup my pfSense. i have an question, my son has an old game that he play with his friend. but pfSense blacker. can i setup the same at Open NAT for Xbox One and PS4?
Not working with Modern Warfare. Think Demonware port mapping causes a problem. Can only play on one pc or console at once. The others can't connect at all.
Thanks for the tutorials! I was able to get my PS4 to go from "Type 3" NAT to "Type 2" using these steps. However, when logging into certain games(as for an example, Destiny 2) I get a notification that I'm currently on a "Type 3" network and may experience issues. Is this some sort of false positive that PfSense triggers or am I missing something?
Hi, do the following CPUs seem enough for a VPN router with Dynamic DNS on PfSense? (Are these low power CPUs enough and if so is there still room to add NAS storage on top of it?) An old 13-Watt Xeon e3-1220l v3 (dual core with HT at 1.1Ghz-1.5 GHz Turbo) or an embedded 10 Watt Intel Celeron J4105 (quad-core NO HT at 1.5Ghz-2.5Ghz Turbo) Any arguments for why the cheaper old Xeon might be more useful? (like support for 32GB of RAM vs 8GB of Celeron, does RAM even matter all that much for PfSense?) The 13Watt Xeon route is more flexible and $40 cheaper than the newer Celeron route, the trade-off would be that the Celeron is embedded CPU with no upgrade path and max ram support is 8GB. Xeon method seems to offer more room to grow going forward and I can not find benchmarks to know if it's even enough to start with today.
Is there any reason this would suddenly stop working on a PS4 as of today? I set this up last week, and it was working great. My son had to reboot his PS4 and now we're back to type 3. Thank you for all the great videos.
do you have a video to get OPEN NAT and server connectivity with Windows 10 and Pfsense I have xbox to work but windows 10 issues I do the fix it it kinda helps you reboot and its either strict moderate or teredo… can you do a video or steps what to do to get a Xbox for Windows 10 to get Open and connected fine and I used manual mode not hybride.. Try doing the steps in this video but change the UPnp settings. Uncheck 'Deny access to UPnP & NAT-PMP by default.' Then you dont have to allow any ports or ips in the UPnP Access Control Lists That possibly may help, see if it makes a difference.
2.4.4 everything is the same but I still get ps4 NAT 2 . The only thing I didn't do was reflection. Should I turn off hybrid> AON rule is moved to the top. Thank you in advance

I have a hp microserver gen 8 with 2 nic ports. I have unraid installed with lots of docker containers, can i use this setup to install pfsense? Or do i need to buy another nic? Do i have to separate one nic for pfsense or can everything live together?
Hi Joao. The best thing is to get another nic. You would then use the new, one port nic ,for unraid then passthrough then dual nic for pfsense. That way you would have a dedicated nic for unraid and one for wan and lan for pfSense.
Just want to ask for the pfsense on Unraid as VM, how do you create an internal networking if you have other VM on the same Unraid box such as a windows 10 VM. How do you allow the other VMs to have internet access and network access to the rest of the network to stuff like printer that is connected to the network created by pfsense?
Hi Jason.Best thing to do is to set your unRAID server with a static ip. For example 192.168.1.200. Then your pfSense vm lan set it to 192.168.1.1. Then pfsense will be the DHCP server on the lan. New vms such as windows 10 will then get their ips from the pfSense VM. All vms and unRAID will be on same subnet 192.168.1.0/24. hope that helps :)
Oh, so all VM will be able to gain an individual ip? hmm interesting!! I thought I might have to individually manage or set extra codes between VMs Thanks a lot! I can move forward with my Unraid plans
@@SpaceinvaderOne But didn't we delete the virtual lan in an earlier video? I tried to redo my pfsense image but during initial setup it doesn't even recognize br0. I would love to see a video on this, I purchased a dual sfp+ card instead of a quad nic so I can run 10 gigabit to my network switch and run 10 gigabit to my other machines from there so I will only need one network cable per machine apart from the wan to the onboard ethernet port on unraid.
Um thats strange. Try when changing the UPnp settings. Uncheck 'Deny access to UPnP & NAT-PMP by default.' That possibly may help, see if it makes a difference. Also its important to check you have static port checked in the outbound mapping. By default for security pfSense rewites the source port. But this can break some things (online gaming) so checking the static port stops the source port being rewritten. Hope this helps :)
Yeah same here with ps4 i also changed from nat type 3 to 2 .... i unchecked the 'Deny access to UPnP & NAT-PMP by default.' do you have type 1 on your ps4???

what about Remote Play dose this allow remote play. Been trying to set my son up. but so fare no go
Is there any reason this would suddenly stop working on a PS4 as of today? I set this up last week, and it was working great. My son had to reboot his PS4 and now we're back to type 3. Thank you for all the great videos.
@Jake Roberts I know it's been a year but I'm willing to bet your son's PS4 was set up with a dynamic IP address instead of a static.
I tried the settings provided but I am getting a cannot find Teredo IP. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I am sure I followed it step by step.
So, would this allow me to use two PlayStation’s to matchmake into the same lobby every time and prevent others from joining?
Legend, cheers
is it bad to open up so many ports for the consoles? They usually specify the specific ports they use
