I think what Carmela realized about Furio was that he was able to take care of himself - Tony was physically strong and a leader, but any time she wasn’t making him dinner, eating some lunch meat out of the fridge, a bowl of cereal, or ice cream was the best he could do, which was used throughout the show to nod to how dependent he was on Carmela running the house. They even made a point of showing Tony heating up leftovers juxtaposed with Furio cooking for himself. They also juxtaposed Furio appreciating the baking Carmela did with Tony shoving a scone in his mouth and not realizing at all how much work goes into Carmela’s mornings.
Great observation. I would add on top of that he had his charm with the gardening, appreciating honest work with hands and had a certain sad or emotional side to him. The same with Vic Musto, the wallpaper guy. He had the saddnes after losing his wife, wasn't scared to show emotions around that and he did manual labor. Tony does nothing around the house, he even couldn't carry seats with AJ to the garage after they put them outside in the open. It was a few more minutes of work 😄
I don't think it's that deep. Men don't need much in terms of living, in fact I'd say most are naturally minimalistic even if they aren't aware of it or consider themselves minimalist. If Carmela didn't cook and take care of the house, what exact value would she even provide to Tony? She doesn't work, she doesn't pay any bills, we hardly ever see them have sex, it's not like she takes care of the house by herself because the Sopranos have a maid, and half of the time we see Tony and Carmela eating out. After awhile, Tony would notice it and address it.
Carmela's romance was really the audience romance with him. He was a fearsome enforcer without any emotional issues like the other characters. He was the only one without social or emotional issues. He really just did his work and knew how to live his life accordingly.
The main reason that Carmela fell for Furio is that Furio seemed genuinely interested in her as a person. Tony could never quite get there. Carmela would have been a totally different character if Tony didn't project his feelings about his mother on her.

She carried herself like an 80 year old lady and Tony acted like a 12 year old when not working. That's why he fell for Gloria because he never knew someone at their age could retain so much youthfulness and treat him as man. Tony's balls were iced into oblivion at home and he made zero effort to use his wealth and power to allow Carmela to even try to develop an identity outside of "housewife" and wanted her in the "mom" role coddling him as his mom never did.

Furio is a stand in for the feelings of romanticism towards the "Old Country" felt by the characters and creators of the show, and the wider ethnic diasporas of America in general. I feel like if we had seen more from Furio's POV, the sheen would have worn off pretty quick. Coming from a member of a different diaspora, after spending enough time in the old country and the rose-tinted glasses come off, you start to realize why your family left in the first place

They set this up immediately with the Italy trip. The director commentary on the DVD's by Chase was really good in this respect. They specifically set it up that you're reminded that the Old County myth was just that...a myth and it's just as tacky and cheesy as the US is. I really wish people would put up the commentaries, because Chase's one on that episode was golden.
To be fair, people left their countries for fairly superficial reasons like war and economic crisis. I'll take italian culture over american culture any day of the week. At least they don't glorify finooks and mullinyans.
The thing I liked about Furio was that there was no unnecessary need for over the top displays to show how much of a tough guy he was. He knew what he had to do, but it was always in a somewhat professional manner. The only time I recall that he flaunted his position was with Matt and Sean when he demanded $1000 from them, but I always considered this to be a sort of right of passage thing. Like how youth team soccer players used to clean the boots of the senior team players, it's just something that young guys trying to come up in the mob had to do. We see Chris having to pay for the dinners and Tony says that one day some kid will be paying for Chris' dinners. Furio probably had to pay up to some guys when he was starting out so the cycle continues. The rest of the crew, particularly Chris, but maybe with the exception of Sil, had a need to show the world just how hard they were, making stupid decisions that put the family in jeopardy. Paulie needlessly starting shit with the Russian comes to mind. Furio would have just told the Russian something like, 'Don't get pissy with me, you're in this situation because of bad decisions', or something in that manner. Like the time when he tells the hotel guy that he's in this situation because of his father, "Don't bitch to me!". He even got one of the girls to look after the hotel clerk. There's no way Paulie, Pussy or Chris would have handled that situation so calmly and without needless stress for Tony. Unlike the rest of the guys, Furio had no ego. He knew his job and knew that he didn't have to be the aggressor all the time to prove how tough he was. He even did the right thing and walked away when he was in love with the bosses wife. A real 'stand up guy'.
I think as the cousin of the boss along with his fiery personality, Furio didn't have to. I think Italian Mafia wouldn't allow disrespect on their own cousins. I think the biggest difference between him and Tony was that Furio most probably did not have a narcissist for a mother. That can mess up someone's mind and character big time. That's why Furio can have constant feelings of loyalty and be angry at Tony cheating on Carmela, his moral code and sense of entitlement and mentality are totally different. But you're right, his lesser finances would have made Carmela resent him after some time.
He became much more attractive as the series went on, even with his unconventional looks, because he contrasted the gaudy and ostentatious “tough guys” of New Jersey with his quiet, “I don’t have to prove to you I could kill you” confidence. It was like a lion. You knew he was absolutely deadly and he didn’t waste a single calorie of energy trying to convince anyone. He simply WAS a badass killer and thrived as one most of the time.
I think we missed Carmella and Furio having a genuine shared interest in culture, class, cuisine, art, and a similar set of manners. Someone mentioned below, left to his own devices, Tony will drink pop and microwave garbage. They contrast that scene with Fuiro having Wine from back home and cooking a fine meal. I think they were a genuine good fit

I liked the contrast scene between Furio and Tony. Furio was at home cooking himself a beautiful meal from scratch. Tony was at home reading a post it note left from Carmella informing him that there was some pasta in the fridge. It jumped between Furio chopping herds and draining spaghetti. Then Tony putting the dish in the microwave. Furio sat down at the table with wine and grating fresh Parmesan over his meal. Then the ping on the microwave as Tony sat down at the table eating the leftover pasta straight out of the dish. Two very different men indeed.
Hes fully functional, programmed in multiple techniques...................they both like blonds, trusted completely by the boss, is their best guy, are one man wrecking crews, both could have taken over as the boss easily if they wanted, both lacking humanity, man theres loads of similarities
Carmela got to see all sides of Tony...she only saw the side of Furio that he wanted her to see. Not saying Furio was as selfish and insensitive as Tony but Carmela had a skewed perception because she couldn't see the whole picture.
@@wulfhere83 i don't know about that. furio didn't have the kind of money that tony had, but furio is a much more stable character than tony. johnny sack was loyal to his wife and that seemed to be the kind of guy furio was to women. furio's general philosophy with loyalty is pretty non-negotiable. furio is either an all OR nothing kind of guy. it explains why he just disappeared when he knew he fucked up with the propeller and did not wait for tony to put 2 and 2 together. tony only cares about loyalty when it was others being loyal to him but he had no real concept of being loyal to other people, no matter how many times he tries to say that family is everything to him. tony's lack of real commitment explains why he didn't really take measures to take care of his own men in their issues even just to keep his business stable. he constantly went back and forth on whether or not christopher is his friend or enemy. he didn't really give vito a chance to hide and come back even though vito is by all accounts an asset. he didn't bother at all with paulie when he was in jail. even with jackie jr, tony didn't really try to set him straight besides screaming at his face and punching him. even with blundetto, he only mildly felt sorry that he was in jail for a long time. these people are some of the closest to tony yet it PAINED him to actually be on their side and help them. it was always something that he grudgingly did and kept tabs on what he'd done for them. i think the bad side of furio is that he is essentially a cold-blooded killer. if carmela got together with him, i think the real deal breaker for her is that she won't have that expensive lifestyle and she'd start to resent the very same qualities she liked about furio: the sentimental, romantic and down-to-earth side of him which is the exact opposite of the opulent, garish and bejeweled daily life she doesn't want to live without.
Dude, Carm's attraction to Furio is classic. She notices that he can see her, he listens, and engages emotionally with her. Meanwhile having a shallow relationship with Tony. I know what decision I'd make in that situation...

Personally, I like the idea that Furio was part of Tony's death not because he wanted to be with Carmela but because the Lupertazzis and the Neapolitan Mafia were working together and they needed both Tony and Phil out of the picture. Butchie would become Boss of the Lupertazzis while Furio would run Jersey with either Patsy or one of the Italian mobsters his underboss. Paulie would've probably colluded with this plan on the down low with the understanding that he had to get out of New Jersey and never come back, which given his superstitions about running the old Aprile crew, he was more than happy to agree to that deal.
I don’t think it was Paulie. He’s not a leader. There’s no way he’d ever be the boss. Though I do think Paulie did have some reasons to kill Tony. The guy who killed Tony had the same jacket as someone before.

Paulie was willing to stay out of the way and given safe passage to make a run for it due to both superstition and preexisting grievances he had with Tony. Carlo flipped but his testimony will likely be rendered moot with Tony dead and Paulie in hiding. Patsy is still around to serve as an underboss for Furio and both would willingly run the DiMeo Family as a "glorified crew" for the Lupertazzis under Butchie.
Yeah, i genuinely think it was a bad way of his story, tho i believe its cos the actor needed to leave abd killing him off wouldve been even less interesting, personaly i believe that furio was only truly loyal to naples, and had they brokered a better deal with one of the new york families (maybe one wed never met) furio wouldve gone over there. He was loyal to tony because he was told to be and if that changed so would his loyalties. An idea of furio as an almost sully figure is exciting, saying that i do genuinely like the idea that he just left. We never see his ghost or any reference to him really. The idea he realised how deep it could become and chose to head back to naples for a new assignment is entirely beliveable and forseeable. The nj is a glorified crew and thats in the eyes of other americans let alone the italians, tony already tried to rip them off they probably couldnt care less about furio returning and breaking one of the terms of the deal
I have watched the sopranos probably 15 times and analyzed it show from more angles than i can remember. I never once made the comparison of Melfi / Tony's and Carmela / Furio's relationships. As well as Tony always finding someone new, so Furio will too. Excellent work

Sean showed them (The collectors) hes stack of money, while just handling 10%, In Furio's view they had plenty to share and they wouldnt fight back. I think Carmella fell for Furio mainly because he had some qualities Carmella couldn’t see in Tony - accountability, self-control and loyalty. Little did she realize that with his qualities Furio would never be a number one, which is arguably the main reason she loves Tony - he is the boss and the most “dominant” in the crew.
Hell Tony himself saw qualities in Furio that weren’t in him. I think he knew for a fact that he wasn’t shit compared to someone like Furio or the ACTUAL Italian mafia.

I think the scene from that episode about Columbus Day where Furio interjects in their conversation where they’re idolising Christopher Columbus and says: “Man, f*ck Columbus, he was just some jerk from North Italy and we hate people from North Italy” is really important. The crew are so preoccupied with being ‘good Italians’ and defending the honor of their ancestral home in this episode, and Furio, the only one who was actually brought up in Italy, could not care less. It makes you consider the disparity between what these characters’ ideas of what it means to be Italian (likely warped from the sheer brutality of the mob and the racial discrimination they’ve faced in America) and what it actually means to be Italian.
Tony didn't break things off with Gloria because he 'got' her, it was because he realised she was deeply unstable and they brought out the worst in each other.
Even when it's silenced for fear of a copyright strike, I still hear "Up In Da Club" whenever I see that scene of Furio ripping off those two idiots for a G-note.
The area where The Sopranos surpasses some of the greats in TV history is it's side characters like this. You can zoom in on any side character and there's a story as interesting as Tony's going on.
The theory of Furio coming back to assassinate Tony in the last episode - in the middle of a crowded Holston's diner no less - is preposterous. It goes to show what little insight most fans have. All of the time and effort show creators like David Chase spend in developing their character arcs, themes and patterns and yet, it still is lost on most viewers. There is literally no logic or supporting evidence/themes or history from all of the episodes that included Furio that would at all point to that being a possibility. Had Chase had the idea to use one of the show's more highly featured characters to "whack" Tony, he certainly would not have ended it the way he did and left it to the imagination. That some fans think Furio, as written by Chase, would pass on whacking a _very_ drunk Tony in that moment next to the helicopter blades - where he would've had _every_ chance of getting away with it no less - before he decided against doing so and returned to Italy, only to _come back_ and whack Tony in front of his _family_ and in a _public_ restaurant, is just ludicrous. It shows how little they understand the characters. Everything about the theory goes against everything that the character of Furio was written to be. Not only would it eliminate 98% of any chance he'd have of getting away with such an act, it would go against every principal and code he had. Principals and codes which were diligently explored and laid out by Chase and the show writers/directors and the same codes and principals which prevented him from eliminating Tony _in the first place_ when he had a near perfect chance to do so. Not to mention when he was at the peak of his feelings for Carmella. The chances of that character shooting _anyone_ in a setting like the one at Holston's are less than 1%. The chances of that character shooting a boss are less than 0.65%. The chances of him shooting a boss, in front of his family that he came to know are less than 0.3% - and the chances of him doing it in front of Carmella, whom he had feelings for, are _NIL._ Flat out 0.000%. He'd either have pushed him into the helicopter blades that drunken night at the casino or not at all. David Chase only shot _one_ alternate ending to the one we got. It was with Tony in witness protection. So that should tell you a lot about the direction in which he was leaning most with the show's ending besides the one we got. The likely reasons we got the ending we did is because for one - Chase knew no matter what he did with Tony's fate (WITSEC, whacked, jail, continuing on status quo) you'd have a chorus of unhappy people. Secondly, he knew that this ending would have us doing what we still are so many years later; talking about it. Lastly - and possibly most important - we likely got this ending because Chase himself could not make up his mind. Chase is also a fan of great music. In particular classic 20th century popular music; classic rock, soul, R&B etc. Like any good songwriter, this ending allowed each viewer to choose the ending _they_ wanted. Even _if_ (like I tend to believe) that the end scene spells out Tony's perspective after being whacked by some random, hat and jump suit wearing street hitter (Member's Only Jacket Guy) like the one's who got Bobby, Phil, Doc Santoro and others - this ending still leaves it open for other fans to draw their own conclusions who may not be keen on such and ending. Or unable to understand the lyrical and artistic manner in which it was laid out. Again, we also have only to look back to the one alternate scene that was filmed to gain any concrete insight as to Chase's leanings for the ways in which we saw Tony's fate playing out; What we ultimately got - or WITSEC. Anyway, I know that was a rant that few will read but whatever. I love the Sopranos. And Furio didn't come back and whack Tony!!! Lol.
Furio was also one of his Bosses Favorite Men and I believe was also her Cousin so I think that Tony would have had some trouble killing him once he was back in Italy.

In the decades following WWII, many of our grandparents were displaced by internal revolutions, and their versions of the worlds that they left wouldn't exist if they went back.
They set this up immediately with the Italy trip. The director commentary on the DVD's by Chase was really good in this respect. They specifically set it up that you're reminded that the Old County myth was just that...a myth and it's just as tacky and cheesy as the US is. I really wish people would put up the commentaries, because Chase's one on that episode was golden.
To be fair, people left their countries for fairly superficial reasons like war and economic crisis. I'll take italian culture over american culture any day of the week. At least they don't glorify finooks and mullinyans.

The thing I liked about Furio was that there was no unnecessary need for over the top displays to show how much of a tough guy he was. He knew what he had to do, but it was always in a somewhat professional manner.
The only time I recall that he flaunted his position was with Matt and Sean when he demanded $1000 from them, but I always considered this to be a sort of right of passage thing. Like how youth team soccer players used to clean the boots of the senior team players, it's just something that young guys trying to come up in the mob had to do. We see Chris having to pay for the dinners and Tony says that one day some kid will be paying for Chris' dinners. Furio probably had to pay up to some guys when he was starting out so the cycle continues.
The rest of the crew, particularly Chris, but maybe with the exception of Sil, had a need to show the world just how hard they were, making stupid decisions that put the family in jeopardy. Paulie needlessly starting shit with the Russian comes to mind. Furio would have just told the Russian something like, 'Don't get pissy with me, you're in this situation because of bad decisions', or something in that manner.
Like the time when he tells the hotel guy that he's in this situation because of his father, "Don't bitch to me!". He even got one of the girls to look after the hotel clerk.
There's no way Paulie, Pussy or Chris would have handled that situation so calmly and without needless stress for Tony. Unlike the rest of the guys, Furio had no ego. He knew his job and knew that he didn't have to be the aggressor all the time to prove how tough he was.
He even did the right thing and walked away when he was in love with the bosses wife.
A real 'stand up guy'.
He extorted those two idiots because they were hanging out basically naked together and showed their entire cash pile instead of having it ready.
I think as the cousin of the boss along with his fiery personality, Furio didn't have to. I think Italian Mafia wouldn't allow disrespect on their own cousins. I think the biggest difference between him and Tony was that Furio most probably did not have a narcissist for a mother. That can mess up someone's mind and character big time. That's why Furio can have constant feelings of loyalty and be angry at Tony cheating on Carmela, his moral code and sense of entitlement and mentality are totally different. But you're right, his lesser finances would have made Carmela resent him after some time.
He became much more attractive as the series went on, even with his unconventional looks, because he contrasted the gaudy and ostentatious “tough guys” of New Jersey with his quiet, “I don’t have to prove to you I could kill you” confidence. It was like a lion. You knew he was absolutely deadly and he didn’t waste a single calorie of energy trying to convince anyone. He simply WAS a badass killer and thrived as one most of the time.
I think we missed Carmella and Furio having a genuine shared interest in culture, class, cuisine, art, and a similar set of manners.
Someone mentioned below, left to his own devices, Tony will drink pop and microwave garbage. They contrast that scene with Fuiro having Wine from back home and cooking a fine meal.

Even though Tony was technically the boss of the mob there, it always felt like Furio was ahead of Tony.
He never showed leadership skills imho a great soldier no doubt but he was never a captain . He wasn't there long enough tho but I can't see him as a boss mostly coz the family seen him as an Italian n an outsider 2 a degree
I liked the contrast scene between Furio and Tony. Furio was at home cooking himself a beautiful meal from scratch. Tony was at home reading a post it note left from Carmella informing him that there was some pasta in the fridge. It jumped between Furio chopping herds and draining spaghetti. Then Tony putting the dish in the microwave. Furio sat down at the table with wine and grating fresh Parmesan over his meal. Then the ping on the microwave as Tony sat down at the table eating the leftover pasta straight out of the dish.
Two very different men indeed.

Carmela got to see all sides of Tony...she only saw the side of Furio that he wanted her to see. Not saying Furio was as selfish and insensitive as Tony but Carmela had a skewed perception because she couldn't see the whole picture.

i don't know about that. furio didn't have the kind of money that tony had, but furio is a much more stable character than tony. johnny sack was loyal to his wife and that seemed to be the kind of guy furio was to women. furio's general philosophy with loyalty is pretty non-negotiable. furio is either an all OR nothing kind of guy. it explains why he just disappeared when he knew he fucked up with the propeller and did not wait for tony to put 2 and 2 together. tony only cares about loyalty when it was others being loyal to him but he had no real concept of being loyal to other people, no matter how many times he tries to say that family is everything to him.
tony's lack of real commitment explains why he didn't really take measures to take care of his own men in their issues even just to keep his business stable. he constantly went back and forth on whether or not christopher is his friend or enemy. he didn't really give vito a chance to hide and come back even though vito is by all accounts an asset. he didn't bother at all with paulie when he was in jail. even with jackie jr, tony didn't really try to set him straight besides screaming at his face and punching him. even with blundetto, he only mildly felt sorry that he was in jail for a long time. these people are some of the closest to tony yet it PAINED him to actually be on their side and help them. it was always something that he grudgingly did and kept tabs on what he'd done for them.
i think the bad side of furio is that he is essentially a cold-blooded killer. if carmela got together with him, i think the real deal breaker for her is that she won't have that expensive lifestyle and she'd start to resent the very same qualities she liked about furio: the sentimental, romantic and down-to-earth side of him which is the exact opposite of the opulent, garish and bejeweled daily life she doesn't want to live without.

4:38 - Furio gets shot because he takes the time to get the highest ranking mob guy safely on the ground (like in the Italy scene) before he takes his gun out.
Personally, I like the idea that Furio was part of Tony's death not because he wanted to be with Carmela but because the Lupertazzis and the Neapolitan Mafia were working together and they needed both Tony and Phil out of the picture. Butchie would become Boss of the Lupertazzis while Furio would run Jersey with either Patsy or one of the Italian mobsters his underboss.
Paulie would've probably colluded with this plan on the down low with the understanding that he had to get out of New Jersey and never come back, which given his superstitions about running the old Aprile crew, he was more than happy to agree to that deal.
I don’t think it was Paulie. He’s not a leader. There’s no way he’d ever be the boss. Though I do think Paulie did have some reasons to kill Tony. The guy who killed Tony had the same jacket as someone before.

Paulie was willing to stay out of the way and given safe passage to make a run for it due to both superstition and preexisting grievances he had with Tony.
Carlo flipped but his testimony will likely be rendered moot with Tony dead and Paulie in hiding. Patsy is still around to serve as an underboss for Furio and both would willingly run the DiMeo Family as a "glorified crew" for the Lupertazzis under Butchie.
Furio was a powerful character. But falling in love with the boss's wife is a big mistake.

Yeah, i genuinely think it was a bad way of his story, tho i believe its cos the actor needed to leave abd killing him off wouldve been even less interesting, personaly i believe that furio was only truly loyal to naples, and had they brokered a better deal with one of the new york families (maybe one wed never met) furio wouldve gone over there. He was loyal to tony because he was told to be and if that changed so would his loyalties. An idea of furio as an almost sully figure is exciting, saying that i do genuinely like the idea that he just left. We never see his ghost or any reference to him really. The idea he realised how deep it could become and chose to head back to naples for a new assignment is entirely beliveable and forseeable. The nj is a glorified crew and thats in the eyes of other americans let alone the italians, tony already tried to rip them off they probably couldnt care less about furio returning and breaking one of the terms of the deal

I have watched the sopranos probably 15 times and analyzed it show from more angles than i can remember. I never once made the comparison of Melfi / Tony's and Carmela / Furio's relationships. As well as Tony always finding someone new, so Furio will too. Excellent work

I think Carmella fell for Furio mainly because he had some qualities Carmella couldn’t see in Tony - accountability, self-control and loyalty. Little did she realize that with his qualities Furio would never be a number one, which is arguably the main reason she loves Tony - he is the boss and the most “dominant” in the crew.
Hell Tony himself saw qualities in Furio that weren’t in him. I think he knew for a fact that he wasn’t shit compared to someone like Furio or the ACTUAL Italian mafia.

I think the scene from that episode about Columbus Day where Furio interjects in their conversation where they’re idolising Christopher Columbus and says: “Man, f*ck Columbus, he was just some jerk from North Italy and we hate people from North Italy” is really important. The crew are so preoccupied with being ‘good Italians’ and defending the honor of their ancestral home in this episode, and Furio, the only one who was actually brought up in Italy, could not care less. It makes you consider the disparity between what these characters’ ideas of what it means to be Italian (likely warped from the sheer brutality of the mob and the racial discrimination they’ve faced in America) and what it actually means to be Italian.

The area where The Sopranos surpasses some of the greats in TV history is it's side characters like this. You can zoom in on any side character and there's a story as interesting as Tony's going on.

You gotta do a show about how Chris is the best shot in the world.
The theory of Furio coming back to assassinate Tony in the last episode - in the middle of a crowded Holston's diner no less - is preposterous. It goes to show what little insight most fans have. All of the time and effort show creators like David Chase spend in developing their character arcs, themes and patterns and yet, it still is lost on most viewers. There is literally no logic or supporting evidence/themes or history from all of the episodes that included Furio that would at all point to that being a possibility. Had Chase had the idea to use one of the show's more highly featured characters to "whack" Tony, he certainly would not have ended it the way he did and left it to the imagination.
That some fans think Furio, as written by Chase, would pass on whacking a _very_ drunk Tony in that moment next to the helicopter blades - where he would've had _every_ chance of getting away with it no less - before he decided against doing so and returned to Italy, only to _come back_ and whack Tony in front of his _family_ and in a _public_ restaurant, is just ludicrous. It shows how little they understand the characters. Everything about the theory goes against everything that the character of Furio was written to be. Not only would it eliminate 98% of any chance he'd have of getting away with such an act, it would go against every principal and code he had. Principals and codes which were diligently explored and laid out by Chase and the show writers/directors and the same codes and principals which prevented him from eliminating Tony _in the first place_ when he had a near perfect chance to do so. Not to mention when he was at the peak of his feelings for Carmella.
The chances of that character shooting _anyone_ in a setting like the one at Holston's are less than 1%. The chances of that character shooting a boss are less than 0.65%. The chances of him shooting a boss, in front of his family that he came to know are less than 0.3% - and the chances of him doing it in front of Carmella, whom he had feelings for, are _NIL._ Flat out 0.000%. He'd either have pushed him into the helicopter blades that drunken night at the casino or not at all.
David Chase only shot _one_ alternate ending to the one we got. It was with Tony in witness protection. So that should tell you a lot about the direction in which he was leaning most with the show's ending besides the one we got. The likely reasons we got the ending we did is because for one - Chase knew no matter what he did with Tony's fate (WITSEC, whacked, jail, continuing on status quo) you'd have a chorus of unhappy people. Secondly, he knew that this ending would have us doing what we still are so many years later; talking about it. Lastly - and possibly most important - we likely got this ending because Chase himself could not make up his mind. Chase is also a fan of great music. In particular classic 20th century popular music; classic rock, soul, R&B etc. Like any good songwriter, this ending allowed each viewer to choose the ending _they_ wanted.
Even _if_ (like I tend to believe) that the end scene spells out Tony's perspective after being whacked by some random, hat and jump suit wearing street hitter (Member's Only Jacket Guy) like the one's who got Bobby, Phil, Doc Santoro and others - this ending still leaves it open for other fans to draw their own conclusions who may not be keen on such and ending. Or unable to understand the lyrical and artistic manner in which it was laid out. Again, we also have only to look back to the one alternate scene that was filmed to gain any concrete insight as to Chase's leanings for the ways in which we saw Tony's fate playing out; What we ultimately got - or WITSEC.
Anyway, I know that was a rant that few will read but whatever. I love the Sopranos. And Furio didn't come back and whack Tony!!! Lol.
Furio was also one of his Bosses Favorite Men and I believe was also her Cousin so I think that Tony would have had some trouble killing him once he was back in Italy.
