The perfect combination of guitar drums bass and vocals. Who knows how many times I have lost all sense of reality tripping to this song. That bass line is like a big friendly snake.
I heard this some for the first time when I was 16 and getting a tattoo done with my dad's ashes mixed in the ink. 27 now and I'll never forget that experience or this song. 💗
I dedicate this to my pet betta fish that died two weeks ago. He always flares his fins when he hears this song and I swear I can see him smile. I love you Tre Blue!! You're swimming under the rainbow bridge now
I am so in awe that a band could make one of the most beautiful and haunting songs ever written, about a goldfish. It makes the song a trillion times cooler. I love you Pinback. RIP Penelope Never thought Id mourn a goldfish I never even met...
No matter what, this is a favourite song of mine, forever and forever-more. Yes, it is tied to adolescence for me, but I always come back to it. It, in-and-of-itself is a stand-alone piece of artwork. I’d love to see in a museum pop-up, cast on a walll with its own dedicated speakers. Can never get enough. Thanks for keeping it live for us to view and enjoy. ❤I’ve enjoyed it since it’s first years here on the ‘Tube.
i just want to thank everyone for the positive comments. when i made this video i was just starting out. it is really inspiring to hear positive comments, cause it helps me believe that i have at least some sort of penchant, but by no means do i believe this is beyond what it is, an inpsired video by an amateur. thx once again.....pinback is a great band anything goes well with these guys!
I adore Pinback. I just got their discography after listening to a few songs here. I'm playing this song simultaneously on different times on my itunes and also here. It's wonderful! They remind me a bit of Lemon Jelly.
Oh Penelope Are you filled with air Swallowed oxygen That makes you float up? Is it Dropsy? Will your lungs swell? It's depressing me To see you struggle Oh Penelope Are you filled with air Swallowed oxygen That makes you float up? Is it Dropsy? Will your lungs swell? i never knew this song was about a fish and i named my daughter Penelope after this song haha oh well we will see what she says when shes older and knows lol
Take you to the forest Let you feel the raindrops falling down Seeping through your red scales Eliminate the faucet Eliminate the need for water Replace it with a safe shell sooooo nice
I had a beta fish for almost 5 yr's then he starting losing his color, he was almost like a dog i'd come home and he'd swim over to me. He was my baby! I have never loved a fish or thought i could love a fish like this! when he died- I was so Fd up about it for days!-even now...to here this song makes me feel so happy that someone went through the wierd feeling of loving a fish..and having so many uv u loving and attaching to this song - It feels awesome
I searched for Pinback in TH-cam to see if there was any new material or live footage of them, and I am so happy that I discovered this old gem. I hadn't heard it before. Thanks for posting this. I first heard of these two guys in an NPR write up. I was hooked from the first notes of "Good To Sea You." I went out and bought two of their discs, and lately I've been wondering if there is new material in the works. Their music is essentially catchy pop stuff, but with great musicianship.
It's about a Goldfish named Penelope whom had recently passed away, much to the Singer's dismay, the song is his mourning as he buries the fish in the forest.
You know it's a good song when people feel like they understand the angles of the message. What most people don't realize is that it's more often a case of a new angle being created in the mind of the listener, instead of one agreed upon angle being recognized collectively. Music inspires creativity and imagination, and both unfold with an unmistakable spontaneity.
This is one of my favorite songs. I was floored when I found out Saosin tried to cover it, and did nothing but expose the limits of their own musicality. Aweful cover. Pinback, you are great.
I've listened to this song probably 25 times yesterday and today combined, I freaking love it. Ironically, my goldfish, Cleo, died today about 3 hours ago :'( R.I.P. Cleo. If you think I'm making this up, I'm not..
I've been bewitched by that bassline... amazing!, words are not enough to describe it. Excelent tune and quite a gifted band. Sometimes I don't get it, such talented bands tend to be so overrated while other (junk) music gets all the credit, not fair!
tremendous song. the bass line carries the song throughout. an absolute perfect song. and the Saosin acoustic version is incredible too. No reason for anyone to compare. Both are fantastic.
i saw pinback live last night and they played this video in the background when they played penelope.. i thought it was pretty cool how they used fan videos =]
i'm only a recent convert to Pinback (say a year) but there is something...ethereal..about the music. excellent video work too, appreciate your efforts. :O>
@numbergreen9 when I was pregnant with my daughter we would listen to Pinback all the time. When she was born, and cranky we would put it on for her and she'd calm down. We vow that our next daughter will be named Penelope.
I did a lot of studio worrk with Heavy Vegtable at Mira Costa Colage. I saw alot of HV and 3 mile Pilot befoe they became Pinback. I think this is the best incarnation of those bands. BTW I hope Travis is doing well
Penelope is a real fish that zach has that constantly hovers around the top of the goldfish bowl and could never make all the way to the bottom without a major struggle. zach has always had a problem keeping fish alive, so i called the pet store and they said that either she had swallowed to much air and would expel it within day and be fine, or she had dropsy which is a disease that fish get where their lungs swell up and she would die in a couple weeks
I can’t be the only elderly millennial who’s clocked in more than 2 decades listening to Pinback.
pedrosquishypants you are not alone
Still rocking them in 2020. Don't worry, not the only one
right there with you.. I saw them live a few times in my teens
I was shown pinback in 2006 when I was in 6th grade so im close!
You're not. It heals the soul.
one of those songs that makes you want to live forever
pretty much how I feel whenever I listen to any of rob crows music.
The perfect combination of guitar drums bass and vocals. Who knows how many times I have lost all sense of reality tripping to this song. That bass line is like a big friendly snake.
20 years later it still sounds brand new. Pinback’s lifted my moods countless times this year, eternally greateful ❤️
this guys invented this style of music .
You're swimming under the rainbow bridge now
i named my daughter after this song
heyikindalikeyou why
I guess cause its a simple and common name XD
Marvinus _ naming her bbtone or fortress might have been troublesome for her
It's a pretty song
Good name.
I am so in awe that a band could make one of the most beautiful and haunting songs ever written, about a goldfish. It makes the song a trillion times cooler. I love you Pinback.
RIP Penelope

Gees! This takes me back to when I lived in San Diego in 2003. They played this song alot on one of their Indie stations. Love them!
i just want to thank everyone for the positive comments. when i made this video i was just starting out. it is really inspiring to hear positive comments, cause it helps me believe that i have at least some sort of penchant, but by no means do i believe this is beyond what it is, an inpsired video by an amateur. thx once again.....pinback is a great band anything goes well with these guys!
Pinback is my favorite band. I can listen to them all day long and they never get old or annoying. I think they've got life figured out.
I seriously cannot get enough of this song. First heard this song on Pandora. Such a catchy, almost like montage-y song.
God I love this song where the beat breaks down just like breaks my heart I swear so good Great video
I adore Pinback. I just got their discography after listening to a few songs here. I'm playing this song simultaneously on different times on my itunes and also here. It's wonderful! They remind me a bit of Lemon Jelly.
Absolutely beautiful video to go along with an absolutely beautiful song. Kudos on a great job.
Oh Penelope
Are you filled with air
Swallowed oxygen
That makes you float up?
Is it Dropsy?
Will your lungs swell?
It's depressing me
To see you struggle
Oh Penelope
Are you filled with air
Swallowed oxygen
That makes you float up?
Is it Dropsy?
Will your lungs swell?
It's depressing me
To see you struggle
I'm treading water with my oars
Glass galleons anchored, ocean floors
I'm diving down with all my gear
In search of treasure, para me corazon
Take you to the forest
Let you feel the raindrops falling down
Seeping through your redscales
Eliminate the faucet
Eliminate the need for water
Replace it with a safe shell
Don't wanna see you floating upside down
On the top of the bowl when I
Come around to visit you
Don't wanna see you floating upside down
No girl
Need you there, Need you there, Need you there
Ooh Release that air
(I'm treading water with my oars
Glass galeons anchored, ocean floors
I'm diving down with all my gear
In search of treasure, para me corazon)
Take you to the forest
Let you feel the raindrops falling down
Seeping through your redscales
Eliminate the faucet
Eliminate the need for water
Replace it with a safe shell
If they summon the rains now,
Are you gonna rise?
If they summon the rains now,
Are you gonna rise?
I wonder if it deals with loneliness.
i never knew this song was about a fish and i named my daughter Penelope after this song haha oh well we will see what she says when shes older and knows lol
She found out yet?
Its actually an allegory for Odysseus's wife Penelope :-)
one of the very very few bands I can truly say that I love every single release they've ever put out. Geniuses.
I know I'm later for the party but I just heard this song on the radio and fell in love with it!!
Take you to the forest Let you feel the raindrops falling down Seeping through your red scales Eliminate the faucet Eliminate the need for water Replace it with a safe shell
sooooo nice
What a song...What a wondefull bass.Cool video also.
I'm coming back nearly a decade later. Found this again amongst my many playlists on here, and I'm so glad I did.
I had a beta fish for almost 5 yr's then he starting losing his color, he was almost like a dog i'd come home and he'd swim over to me. He was my baby! The art in this video is awesome together with the song I fall into a comfortable warm place.
I love the bass line and guitar and everything about this song! So awesome!
It's about a Goldfish named Penelope whom had recently passed away, much to the Singer's dismay, the song is his mourning as he buries the fish in the forest.
this song is so beautiful and melodic. The art video just completes it in a way.

i've just found out about pinback last week and i've been listening to their music and watching your video non-stop
This is one of my favorite songs. I was floored when I found out Saosin tried to cover it, and did nothing but expose the limits of their own musicality. Aweful cover. Pinback, you are great.

I've been bewitched by that bassline... amazing!, words are not enough to describe it. Excelent tune and quite a gifted band. Sometimes I don't get it, such talented bands tend to be so overrated while other (junk) music gets all the credit, not fair!

Saosin's version sounds more whiny, but it has a more haunting feel to it.
Both versions are incredible.
@TNTIV Pinback is Zach Smith and Rob Crow. Zach is Systems officer. And Rob is in a million bands.
I adore that song:)

Pinback has so many uniquely sounding songs, it's really neat to see how people have such different favourites.
@numbergreen9 when I was pregnant with my daughter we would listen to Pinback all the time. When she was born, and cranky we would put it on for her and she'd calm down. We vow that our next daughter will be named Penelope.

Pinback is like Mew + Yo La Tengo + mysterious unique kind of awesome nobody knows about.
this song and band are both wonderful
Penelope is a real fish that zach has that constantly hovers around the top of the goldfish bowl and could never make all the way to the bottom without a major struggle. zach has always had a problem keeping fish alive, so i called the pet store and they said that either she had swallowed to much air and would expel it within day and be fine, or she had dropsy which is a disease that fish get where their lungs swell up and she would die in a couple weeks

This is also a very awesome song from pinback! I like how it has a calm feeling!
I forgot about this song. I love rediscovering a song with the feeling like it was the first time. Maybe I subconsciously forgot for this purpose
i think da saosin version is better dey sing it with more feeling . =] buh da art video is greatt
The singers voice sounds almost exactly like Jonas Bjerre of the bamd Mew.. Awesome!
