    That's hilarious. The aerodynamic "speed holes" in the wheels should increase the performance a lot. Looking forward to watching Part 2.

    This is a dream project for me. i have to railroads with (commercial) railbiking (you hire a bike simply) pretty close, but the bikes weighs a megaton but runs smoothly but uphill ....🥵🥵🥵
    I have also found an abandoned track that runs for maybe 60-80 miles 🥳 but I need a railbike, but have no workshop.

    I did this as a 11 year old kid my parents owned a asphalt circle track for years while we was stationed in cannada and there was tons and tons and tons of cars in the back behind the track from all the demo derbies. Well we would be there at the track with mom and dad all week after school working and every sat and Sunday at 1 pm racing starts. Well I had access to huge stick and mig welding machines tons and tons of scrap parts and frames off old cars and plasma cutter and torch I literally built a rail road track go cart I cut up steel rims.made.them just wide enough to attach and lock on to train track rails and when it was all done thanks to dad helping me with figuring out where and how to mount a go.lart motor to it it was done in a few weekends and it had 4 seats on it from a cutlass.supreme and cutlass.rear bumpers welded on and front ones as well. Somwe would ride the rail road go kart I built for three miles to get to our deer hunting blinds on our property with out that I made we would have never had such a great hunting spot cuse it was so thick and tons of snow and brush you can't even walk into there and the go kart rail road car was big enough to carry our guns water bottles and the trailer for it would carry the blinds at begging of deer season and the trailer was perfect for bringing the deer back out as well and.nice thing is deer don't get your scent off your tracks in snow cuse you only ride in on the rail tracks and we shot some amazing bucks there.

    I'm planning my own rail cart. I was going to use some 5 inch caster wheels to ride on, and keep it on the track by mounting skateboard wheels horizontally inside the rails. This will keep it on the track like how a roller coaster works. I think I'll power it with a moped engine I found in the scrap yard.

    • @saveitforparts
      @saveitforparts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds fun! Keep in mind how it will handle switches, street crossings, track connector plates, etc. All my designs have had issues with some of those things so far!

    • @saveitforparts
      @saveitforparts  ปีที่แล้ว

      If your design is lightweight, sometimes the easiest approach is to just pick it up and carry it over crossings and stuck switches. A lot of abandoned crossings are packed full of dirt or paved over. I've seen spring-loaded guide wheels that can be moved out of the way when needed, but they add complexity and failure points.

    Those zips ties should have been black for UV resistance. If the lid gaskets rub the rail side tear them out. You have to much runout for any speed. Looks like enough fun to spring for store bought wheels.

    How are you going to solve the issue of traction on the wheels when you add a motor? I might suggest keeping the air in those BMX tires and having the rubber be the friction surface with the rail. That will also make the ride smoother.

    seems like that wobbling is going to become an issue at higher speeds... I might put a double flange on one side then just use a regular rubber bike tire on the other side, lock the steering wheel in place and make it so the distance between the two sides is slightly adjustable.

    • @saveitforparts
      @saveitforparts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never liked the double-flange or triple-caster thingies that railbikes seem to have. They won't go through switches or level crossings properly (although on abandoned tracks it will be hit or miss if those are full of dirt anyway). In a future video I'll be widening the wheels and seeing how that does.
