Wow, that’s incredible. Thank you so much for the video tour of your new place. Looking forward to seeing more videos in the future of what you have done to it. Yes you are very inspiring and I have hope for my future retirement on a beer budget.
I love the house. Price is definitely spectacular, but the house itself, the yard and fence walls are exactly what I would be looking for even at a higher price. And the fact that you’re in a cooler mountain climate makes your Philippine homestead ideal. I enjoyed your interview with Paul, and I will be following your videos . If I end up in the Philippines, one day, it will either be in Baguio or MalayBalay…
Yes, my wife really enjoyed Bagio (teacher training and horse riding), but we did settle in a $6000 purchase house in Malabalay, about five years ago. Big remodel. For about $1200, with a great carpenter welder who lives 2 doors down. We actually put in a half tennis court, built a guest house. The best is, mornings and evenings are cool. Life can be reasonably priced, and you can choose good people to be friends with.
It happens more than you hear about. Most Philippine vloggers live in the cities. My videos have been about traveling and sharing my experiences. I have been surprised at the interest in the province life. I am shifting some of my focus to cover those experiences as well
Hey Darrel just saw your video with Mike. I am so impressed. I am 74 live off grid on Big Island Hawaii. I would love to come visit. You gave alot of us old dudes more hope than ever. Thank you sir.

Brilliant Darrell, congrats 👏, job well down. Just goes to show what some paint, patience and creative thinking can do to fix up a run down. Looking forward to seeing thd end results. Cheers 🍻 from Australia 🇦🇺
TY for sharing your story, really opens my eyes on the craziness of American (California, Bay Area) living. Your home is as big as my home yet I pay nearly 2800 a year in property taxes, not only could I survive there but dare I say very comfortably on my social security benefits, where here I’m counting pennies.
That is absolutely correct. I moved here for exactly that reason. I lived in the Bay Area before. Near Stanford for a few years and then the top of Nob Hill at Mason and Pine. I love it here more every day.
What a lovely little house! Perfect for one person. Black and white with gray is modern and attractive. I would add a few red accents just because. Things like towels, cushions, a vase, small things. I could totally live here!
Dang a very nice place... Even if you spend 5K USD to fix it is still worth it. The lot size is what I like the best. you can basically have a farm and an oasis. I would built me a small pond and plant
I have streets on 3 sides and only one neighbor bordering me. I will be making like a park out there garden etc. I travel doing my videos. Once complete I will be offering it for those who would like to try the province experience. Like an Airbnb but only for my subscribers. I will have a small network of drivers guides etc for those who come
Make sure the owner shows you a home title with his name on it. And have a paralegal make a lease agreement… you don’t want to spend all that $ and then find out he doesn’t even own the house… you could fix it up and then get kicked out by the real owner…😊
New viewer/subscriber here… I agree, finding a place for that price and doing an inexpensive quality rehab is a great way to go. I think you’ll become known as the man in the ‘white house’. Congratulations on your project.
Thank you for the kind words. Hahaha... Actually true. The locals chuckle when they see it's white. Then about 30 seconds later they go/ Wow I like it.
All great idea and I will take your advice. I am currently prioritizing the improvements. This project is bing accomplished 100% from my Social Security income
Wow, what a find!!! I love it!!! You’re doing a great job rehab in the place! The owner is probably tickled to death!!! That will make a good home for you.
Paint the roof above the carport/leanto pure white as you can! White reflects 89 percent of the heat. I painted the ex’s father’s steel roof above the indoor kitchen, it went from unbearable heat radiating into the house to not even noticeable. Paint everything you can on the roof white if you can.. can send pics if you want.
If there's any type of paint or additive that can be used to deflect or repel the UV (Ultraviolet) rays, that's what you need bc that's what penetrates everything. White will reduce the temperature inside but UV protection is key and will give the best result possible. @@Ex-Pensive_Expat
Looks great! What a great deal! Well worth investing to fix it up. Just my opinon: Sink below the window, on the left walking into the kitchen. Washer spin dryer to the left of the sink. Stove centered, and counters on the wall below the Aircon.
Win/win! That’s just perfect and you can’t go wrong. For that sort of investment you can easily walk away while leaving the place vastly improved. Aircon is a must and the outdoor kitchen is a great idea to keep cooking odours out of the house. I’m in Western Australia and do most of my cooking outdoors. A cheap kitset garage would be a bonus for overflow storage/workshop too. I hope it goes well for you and congratulations on making the great escape! 👍🏻
I really like watching your videos because you're living the way I hope to one day be able to live over out in the province where there's not very many expats
Thank you. I will be focusing more on my province experience. It seems most of the vloggers I've watched over the years and before I got here have always been from the city. So my experience is a bit different
Your a good man for helping out the locals in creating jobs and the owner of the property is blessed to have their property well taken care of for the next five years. As you said it's a win win situation. God bless you and may everything go smoothly as planned.
Great job, nice idea finding a place that needed some fixing. I've lived in the Philippine for 7 years so far and have known two other expats who did the fix up route. As long as you have a signed lease and the owners are semi honest you should be good. I love the yard. I also live in the province of Zamboanga Del Norte but own a small home there
I'm doing it with videos. Thank you for the compliment. I only recently realized there are a lot of people interested in the province life. I will be focusing a little more on that as well
There are definitely a lot of foreigners who are interested about the province life. I follow plenty of Philippine TH-camrs and have read their subscribers’ comments.
Thank you for doing something different! Currently selling my home and plan to move to the province in Pangasinan and build a small home within my wife’s family compound. I prefer the province life to the city. Easier to get to know the locals and enjoy their customs. Looking forward to seeing more from your experience.

Adorable house and property. You've done an amazing transformation, in a short time & at low cost. I enjoy your very informative commentary, & your filming is so satisfying. Congrats, friend! Thank you. (From Florida; originally from Texas.)
Currently getting into college debt in the u.s. , in a hood nonetheless, I can’t stress how jealous I am of you and how free that feels. You deserve it man, especially with your knowledge being able to do fixits and repairs. That seems awesome man, I wish I were in your shoes!
I have my social Security and feel lucky for that. Other than that you can do it my friend. I rarely do the actual work. It's the cost of labor and materials that allows that.. Yes you could do what I am doing. If you don't understand the concept of what you want done just relax and watch TH-cam "How to" / "DYI" videos until you do. Male or female! Then hire someone to do it
I did something like that. I rented a 2 bedroom, 2 CR, 1 kitchen and 2 dirty kitchen for US100. I re-built walls, plumbling, electric, cieling, paint. Built a new room. Installed aircons., insulation, and totally furnished it myself. It took me a long time, but 22 years later, my rent is only half of what it could be, and I have got back all the money I invested into it. It could now rent for US400. I am now considering putting in a small pool.
luv luv luv it! absolutely amazing, and the colors are fitting. you can simply add colors from natural accents, e.g., large indoor plants, tropical indoor/outdoor plants; but moreover, $36.00 buck a month is extraordinary. CONGRATS! It's really a big deal ❤️
The thing that will make the house pop to life would be some foux shutters on all the windows. I think a wine color, maroon, burgundy will make it look like a million dollars.
The painters did a great job. I love the security porch in the front to lock up your motorbike. My friends in Manila had to put their motorbike in the living room every night, so it wouldn't be stolen. It sucks that the kitchen didn't have a sink, so you had the expense of trying to figure that out.
I thought that was strange too. But it is very common for the kitchen to be out side. Imagine if you will the average temperature is 82 degrees.. Like every day all year round. Then having an out door kitchen is what makes the most sense. The heat from cooking is outside and not further heating up the house And that what this place has
Yeah, I remember those 83 degree nights in Dothan, Alabama on the Florida border. Don't need to wear a shirt and just chill with my friends. The heat in Manila is terrible though. I could barely breath at night.@@KB-ke3fi
I love a white house, and the grey doors, and I could live there without a doubt. Add splashes of colour inside with curtains/blinds, cushions, duvet cover etc. It's a great size. with carport, dirty kitchen and huge garden. The owners will benefit from your work which didn't cost that much, whenever you leave that rent will rise!
Yes on the inside I am waiting to find furniture I like and then will color coordinate. You'll need to watch the next videos and then make more definitive color suggestions. I would appreciate if you will. Finding furniture you like that is also affordable and the colors you like can defiantly be a challenge. So, I'm waiting to find the furniture first
Thanks for the prompt reply! I can't wait to see you furnish your new home. I love bright colours like lime green, yellow and fushia pink for cushions to brighten up a sofa...if you have one that is you may just have chairs. Cannot wait for your next video, so exciting. Your colour choice so far is perfect! @@Ex-Pensive_Expat
That looks really great and you are doing an excellent rehab job. I saw a bluish-green paint on the frame around the front door. That might add a bit of color if you put it on the outside trim. Or, if gray is going to be the final color of that balustrade, maybe the trim should also be in gray.
The house looks good in white. Great idea to repurpose the wrought iron. Perfect size to keep clean and sitting on a huge block. Very lucky to have those trees shading the place it save you even more in power👍
Interested in the upcoming improvements of your new home. Good luck and hope you will have a happy and healthy life in the Phil! I'm your new sub fr SoCal. God bless!
I vote for white or green outside paint. Definitely white for inside the house coz it's neat and easy in the eye and the place will looked spacious...and you can throw some colors in your furniture of choice....I'm really curious on the update of this house...specifically the outside kitchen...so long 👋
It was vacant for years. They had planed to tear it down and build a much bigger house as that's whats happened on this street over years. I got it cheap and fixed it up. Over all my rent will be half what it would be when including the improvements I've made. I don't own it but will have saved my self a lot over time
Insane price for renting and how fresh it looks now you painted it out n inside ...owner must be happy how your looking after his investment, only thing I'd worry about is Security their....keep smiling Dude
Why are you worried about security? It has the locking front porch to lock up his motorbike and bars on the windows and around the air conditioner for security.
I could easily afford and live there, when I get to retire I would like to find something comparable in a province area. (A little more isolated) Two or three more years and I'm done with all the craziness here in the USA. I love my country but I really want to be able to enjoy my retirement years and the philippines looks like the perfect place for me. I've been doing my research for about five years now looking at the positive and negative sides of the Philippines and I see more positive than negative aspects of retirement in the Philippines. I enjoyed your video and looking forward to seeing more of your thoughts and subjects there. Thank you.
That was about two blocks from this one. It was a two bedroom and only had two electrical outlets per room. The rooms were smaller and would require a bit of fix up for my taste but nothing like this one. That was a good deal also but I liked the potential when I saw this one.@@JJNunez-wt4mr

This is really great content bro, too many videos about people discussing budgets and saying stuff like you can't live well with X amount here yada yada. Really like to see what all you end up doing and all the costs associated so i'll definitely be following.
Darrell, very nice job, what a difference in before and after! I appreciate you posting your walkthrough and and repairs as promised. I completely agree that these costs are incredibly low, in comparison to America, and make it affordable to bankroll projects like this. However, will you share why, in your perception and with your experiences in financing, real estate and construction, you believe it's worth the risk; is there a Filipino version of a lease agreement; are landlords pretty trustworthy as a general rule; are landlord scammers/opportunists rarely heard of out there? Thanks for the great videos, keep them coming!
Well no matter where we are there are scammers. As I live in the province where everyone pretty much knows or knows of everyone, the odd's are in my favor. The landlords are business owners a few blocks away and live five houses down. In my case I feel comfortable. But still require a lease same as I would in San Diego. From my experience most of the crime you might hear about in the Philippines is probably copy cat criminals from crimes in the US. Nothing particular evil here compared to there. Just more of it in the US and on a grander scale.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly; and yes, it looks like you covered your bases pretty well and made it into a win-win situation for everyone including future tenants. Cheers!@@Ex-Pensive_Expat

A couple questions. Will you put screens on the windows to keep the bugs out? How does the CR look? I would probably lose my mind without a flush toilet and hot and cold running water. I really can't do the Filipino shower thing. Other than that you scored big getting that spot. I subscribed because i want to see the progress. I have decided i need to get out of the USA sooner than later and hurry up and retire to the Philippines.
. Will you put screens on the windows to keep the bugs out? Yes I will get screens but I haven't had a bug problem yet. How does the CR look? The CR looks 100% American. But the toilets needed rebuilt, I would probably lose my mind without a flush toilet and hot and cold running water. That is easy to have and install. I really can't do the Filipino shower thing. Both bathrooms have flush toilets and showers. I will get hot water installed in the main bathroom. Because of the weather the showers are like jumping in the pol during the warm weather. But adding hot water is also very inexpensive for the equipment and installation

I'm sure you can get fresh produce of all kinds for pennies, no need to grow it yourself.
it looks like it could be sound proof enough. cover up the screams of those who dare to enter.
Greenery inside unnecessary in such a green area. Produce so cheep its not worth your effort to grow but flowers would be nice.
Wow, that’s incredible. Thank you so much for the video tour of your new place. Looking forward to seeing more videos in the future of what you have done to it. Yes you are very inspiring and I have hope for my future retirement on a beer budget.

Thank you. Yes the rent is exceptional
that white paint is perfect, it should reflect the summer heat, really helpful
Yes!! Thanks for the comment!!
very nice find and you did a great job having it fixed up. The white gray and black make a good combination.
Try coming for a visit my friend
yes comehere in ph and will love the place❤❤
Yes, my wife really enjoyed Bagio (teacher training and horse riding), but we did settle in a $6000 purchase house in Malabalay, about five years ago. Big remodel. For about $1200, with a great carpenter welder who lives 2 doors down. We actually put in a half tennis court, built a guest house. The best is, mornings and evenings are cool. Life can be reasonably priced, and you can choose good people to be friends with.
Absolutely Thanks for the comment. It's inspiring @@nitaihammari6994

Hey Darrel just saw your video with Mike. I am so impressed. I am 74 live off grid on Big Island Hawaii. I would love to come visit. You gave alot of us old dudes more hope than ever. Thank you sir.
Excellent my friend. You might just love it here. There are endless opportunities to live off the grid here from what I have seen
Nice Place with some tender loving care... Very Cool... big lot, yard and yeah the Man Cave outside..
Frugally and Simple at it's Best in the Phils.. You got a Real deal, with some work and fixing up.. Wow ... Great Job
Brilliant Darrell, congrats 👏, job well down.
Just goes to show what some paint, patience and creative thinking can do to fix up a run down.
Looking forward to seeing thd end results.

I love it here more every day.
since this is a bungalow put insulation above the ceiling. it will decrease the temp. inside tremendously.
Yes.. Also the trees shade the roof of the house too
What a lovely little house! Perfect for one person. Black and white with gray is modern and attractive. I would add a few red accents just because. Things like towels, cushions, a vase, small things. I could totally live here!
Thank you. And thank you for the ideas too!!

Thanks for the tip. I will seriously look into that
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat
White reflects, black attracts heat
If there's any type of paint or additive that can be used to deflect or repel the UV (Ultraviolet) rays, that's what you need bc that's what penetrates everything. White will reduce the temperature inside but UV protection is key and will give the best result possible. @@Ex-Pensive_Expat

@Ex-Pensive_Expat I live in hot climates. White is the way to go. There are also specialized white insulated paint coatings in some countries
Looks great! What a great deal! Well worth investing to fix it up.
Just my opinon: Sink below the window, on the left walking into the kitchen. Washer spin dryer to the left of the sink.
Stove centered, and counters on the wall below the Aircon.
Thanks for the tips!
You're an awesome guy Darrel.
Oh!! Thank you so much I appreciate your kind words
Sir...that is an awesome find!! Can't wait to see more of your house...very cool indeed.

Great job, nice idea finding a place that needed some fixing. I've lived in the Philippine for 7 years so far and have known two other expats who did the fix up route. As long as you have a signed lease and the owners are semi honest you should be good. I love the yard.
I also live in the province of Zamboanga Del Norte but own a small home there
This is amazing. Great videos. You should write a book detailing how to live on a shoestring budget there.
I'm doing it with videos. Thank you for the compliment. I only recently realized there are a lot of people interested in the province life. I will be focusing a little more on that as well

Much respect. Truly a visionary. If I was here 5 years or longer I might do a pool here too. The cost of labor would make it affordable
WOW all I have to say! huge yard and house looking great!!! well worth the money by the looks.
luv luv luv it! absolutely amazing, and the colors are fitting. you can simply add colors from natural accents, e.g., large indoor plants, tropical indoor/outdoor plants; but moreover, $36.00 buck a month is extraordinary. CONGRATS! It's really a big deal ❤️
Thank you for watching and thank you the nice comments
The thing that will make the house pop to life would be some foux shutters on all the windows. I think a wine color, maroon, burgundy will make it look like a million dollars.
Thank you for the suggestions
Congrats I’m so wanting to do something like this i spent quite a bit of time in the Caribbean miss that water and the food as well as the people

Yep. I moved here from San Diego. It was one of the most expensive places to live in America
At this moment I am recording my "Financial Freedom with Average Social Security"

The heat from cooking is outside and not further heating up the house And that what this place has
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat 82? Wow, for me that's cooler than where I live in Houston. Usually it's over 100F for 6 months...even at night.

That looks really great and you are doing an excellent rehab job. I saw a bluish-green paint on the frame around the front door. That might add a bit of color if you put it on the outside trim. Or, if gray is going to be the final color of that balustrade, maybe the trim should also be in gray.
The coors are not final. The white is actually the enamel primer. Not finished painting yet
The house looks good in white. Great idea to repurpose the wrought iron. Perfect size to keep clean and sitting on a huge block. Very lucky to have those trees shading the place it save you even more in power👍

It was vacant for years. They had planed to tear it down and build a much bigger house as that's whats happened on this street over years. I got it cheap and fixed it up. What happened to the apartment for $60 a month??? Would have liked to have seen that...
Yes. Philippines has friendly people who can speak English and thousands of beautiful islands to explore.
That was about two blocks from this one. It was a two bedroom and only had two electrical outlets per room. The rooms were smaller and would require a bit of fix up for my taste but nothing like this one. That was a good deal also but I liked the potential when I saw this one.@@JJNunez-wt4mr
