I'm a Filipino who came to US in California And became a naturalize US citizen. I was thinking when I retire I will go back to the Philippines for good. I heard the I need to apply dual citizenship in order for me to stay back home with a time frame of getting penalize for over staying in the Philippines. Is that true and what process do I need to do to get my social security pension to be remitted to my account in the Philippines and can I open a bank account in the Philippines even you are a US citizen.
More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.
The increasing prices have impacted my plan to retire at 62, work part-time, and save for the future. I'm concerned about whether those who navigated the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am currently experiencing. The combination of stock market volatility and a decrease in income is causing anxiety about whether I'll have sufficient funds for retirement.
This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000

It sounds appealing, but I wonder if it’s really sustainable. I mean, you have to consider healthcare, the cost of living going up, and what happens if your benefits don’t stretch as far as you think.
Exactly! Living on that small an amount sounds risky, especially if you haven’t maximized your Social Security benefits. There are ways to get more out of your SS, but a lot of people don’t know about them. I’ve been looking into it more myself.
I know people who’ve done it, but they had a backup plan. They weren’t solely relying on Social Security. They also invested early or had savings. It's all about balancing the budget with what’s realistic. But yeah, $600 a month? You’d have to live very modestly
I agree. Plus, you need to know which countries are actually viable on that budget. Some places offer lower costs of living, but others require more money than people expect for things like visas and taxes

Thanks for sharing, and I'll be sure to pick up some of your travel videos. Cheers Paul.
Of course you can and eat exceptionally healthy as well, avoiding most or all processed foods. Some videos floored me saying you need $2000-$5000 month, wondering what kind of lifestyle or if they are way overpaying. For those who cannot be frugal and/or paying for a lot of others, it isn't possible. The litmus test is doing the math on paper and see if the numbers add up. You'd be surprised what you can do if you manage carefully. Kudos to this expat for showing us how.
@@JamesHickman-g5cI’ve reached the conclusion that the $5000 a month guys are trolls, assholes or both. Government lawyers in Manila aren’t making $5000 a month.

Hi Paul. Great 👍 video interview with Darrell. I like Darrell's way of living,.. down-to-earth and frugal "Filipino style" living. Thanks and keep up the great work Paul.
A friend of mine retired at 65 . He has 65 acres . When he retired he told his wife I’m going to paint all the rooms . Then the curtains didn’t match so he bought new ones . He changed several things like furniture . Finally his wife said for 40 years you drove a hour to work 6 days a week. Worked 10 to 12 hours a day and drove home a hour. During that time the house was mine and you slept here . So she didn’t want any of his changes . So he bought a two bedroom trailer and went back to work to pay for it . A couple of nights a week he sleeps in the house and a couple of nights a week she walks down to the trailer . Their both very happy .
I’m 61 and I’ve been researching of countries to retire to at 67. I can relate to Daryl’s perception on experiences over material things. He also looks really great for 70 years of age. Thanks for sharing this amazing journey 🫶🏽
@jerryteague6508 Best plan of action is do some initial research, and then plan an exploratory "suck it and see" trip (2 weeks minimum). Many expats miss out on this step, and just sell up in the US and move, sight unseen to Philippines - very, very, very bad idea. I've known people who didn't even last a week. You'd be surprised what these exploratory trips can reveal - For example, I thought I'd be a "province boy", but I found myself quickly bored in the province. After initially hating the place, I ultimately fell in love with Manila, and wouldn't live anywhere else in Philippines, although I do have to escape to an island every now and then. Good luck!
So right! I the same I pushing 70 I totally understand also, I have ended up on my own also after a life serving women! Now I serve myself, I live now in Rizal Philippines as my pension from the UK is not enough in the UK!

As a passive investor, is it wise to buy market tracking index funds and ETFs from companies like Blackrock, Vanguard and State Street, even when they're at all time highs? i want to invest around 600k for retirement
These funds offer diversification, low fees, and long-term growth potential. Given the significant amount you plan to invest, consulting with a financial advisor can provide personalized guidance tailored to your specific situation and retirement goals.

Hello Paul, First time here. Been in the Philippines 11years . Really like your channel. The guy with your interviewing now is really cool. He has learned how to enjoy life. Your dong a great job. The best to you and yours.
My motivation for possibly coming there is exactly the things Darrell talked about in this video. I want a much slower lifestyle, I want to be surrounded by nature and most of all, I want to be with people that are kind and friendly. I get so tired of such poor attitudes and all the negativity in America. I grew up without a care in the world and saw that money does not buy happiness nor contentment. I was the true rebel in my family and saw worth and enjoyment out of friendships and simple experiences, not trying to appear perfect and keep up with the Joneses. I want to connect with others who have the same mind space. Who appreciate the little things and are not full of ego and desire for materialistic possessions. I would feel more comfortable living in one of the condo buildings at first. I have no clue how to fix up anything and was wondering if Darrell or Paul might be able to recommend an area. I would really appreciate that. Thank you!
I'd say just come for a vacation and extend your tourist visa and slow travel from place to place as the spirit moves you. One day you'll wake up feeling at home and then you'll know
A very interesting and uplifting interview Paul. Not a lot of people maybe will replicate what Darrell is doing 'exactly' - but -some degree of it or % of what he is doing could be done for some people and help their situation ? Attitude is a big part of his success and transformation - simply because he has the "goodness of fit" in who he really is - as a person ! A wonderful addition to the locals and they welcome him with open arms. He helps the community provides some work for them and uses their services for transportation. His success comes from also providing for some locals ! = A - win - win scenario.
Wow Thank you for the kind words. We all be need a base line ($600) in order to plan savings, material purchases and other living life activities. In my case living like that I have another $1,200 of discretionary income for what ever else I choose. So I am doing well. I am doing better than most in this country. I have just completely evolved and adjusted to a completely different mindset than those who still live mostly in a western way of thinking which also works awesome for them. These days I find more pleasure and joy experiencing activities than collecting material possessions. So I live more frugal than I ever did but I also travel more than I ever did. Thank you again for the kind words
Mr. Expat if the landlord decides to come back and you need a place to live please let me know. The house is located on Guia Zaldivar Antique. It's 2BR, 2Ba, single family. I live in the US. Thank You
The reason I wear shades in my videos is because I'm usually outside and also is because I am self conscious about the bags under my eyes. I could sleep for week and people will say. "You look tired". I never wear them indoors or when riding public transportation.
I will get beat up for this, but I rarely spend more than US $800 a month(in fact I usually Also put away a couple thousand pesos usually each week). I budget more and but that’s basically about what I spend. I do own my house that we built, and yes use my Aircon when I feel like it. We simply have a simple lifestyle.

I believe the retirement crisis will get even worse. Many struggle to save due to low wages, rising prices, and exorbitant rents. With homeownership becoming unattainable for middle-class Americans, they may not have a home to rely on for retirement either.
Consider buying stocks when the economy is not doing well, like during a recession. It could be a chance to buy them at a lower price and sell later when prices go up. Just keep in mind, this isn't financial advice, but sometimes it's better than keeping a lot of cash.
Accurate asset allocation is crucial. Some use hedging or defensive assets in their portfolio for market downturns. Seeking financial advice is vital. This approach has kept me financially secure for over five years, with a return on investment of nearly $1 million.
My CFA 'Grace Adams Cook' , a renowned figure in her line of work. I recommend researching her credentials further. She has many years of experience and is a valuable resource for anyone looking to navigate the financial market.
I met this guy the other day can’t remember his name but no problem he don’t remember mine either. Interesting guy. Enjoyed visiting with him. I subscribed to his channel as soon as he mentioned he had one. I’m too old and too spoiled to live on 600/month..😅 old carnivores live forever.
Rents are high. But if you take out the big city rent prices, they are nowhere near on average $1700 a month in the US. You need to find a small town in the south or midwest and you can find average rents of about $800.
I live in Siquijor with my 17 year old son and spend around 25k a month. if you are not someone who is used to getting everything easy and spending money like it is water then you can live quite well on the cheap. I live about 250 meters from the pier in siquijor town. my wife has a place in the province and I escape out of town regularly to regain my sanity.i also go for trips to other islands and travel around on my bike. 25k is less that 500 US dollars a month. that money is about 20% of my income. I save 80% of what I get.
Love this video. You can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it. He shows that you don't need a lot to live as you want. He is soooo chilled, good on him. I'm going to watch his link. Thanks Paul
This is one of your top interviews. Mostly because he’s not like all the other 90% of the guys you interview. He’s a responsible, wise, insightful man who isn’t reckless, self centered, and sees opportunity where others aren’t looking. I respect that. I will meet him soon. I want to be influenced by people like him who are not doing what others are. He’s contented. My observation is he probably loves himself and treats himself accordingly. An inspiration person.
Very interesting video. I remember from another video, this guy commented on how he lives on so little. Many negative comments were made, I was polite but disagreed. Now I see it is possible. Only if you put in the effort to live so simply. Fair play to him. I will be looking up his channel. Thanks.
Hey Paul, I met Darrell last week and I was fascinated by his process and methodology of finding these houses that have needs to either be completed or missing walls, windows, etc. I love his enthusiasm and energy. I enjoyed the video and let's try to do that "Expat thing" and have coffee soon! Bring Mae! 🤣
You've been able to creatively and successfully address your situation on just social security income. While I agree that so many of us are retiring on just social security, not all are struggling to pay $1700 in rent. You have to consider that there are couples pooling their income and folks who either have paid off houses or low mortgage payments due to having bought a while ago. And there are a few places left with much lower rent costs than $1700 (but maybe not for long). That said, there are creative ways to live cheaply in the US too. But I'm looking abroad as another option as well.

I noticed he was quick to share that his way is not for everyone, but it is possible, or any step between 600 and whatever upper limit you choose. Thanks for sharing, and I'll be sure to pick up some of your travel videos. Cheers Paul.
Thank you for the kind words!
$600.00 is easy if you live with filipinos, stay away from other foreigners, eat at home.
Help your neighbors
The main difference in budgets I think is food and rent? That's kind of what my channels is about
Do you live in filipinos? Are from Philippines?
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat I am 49 I have been living in the Philippines for over 10 years. My total bills are around $1000 as I have higher rent than the interviewee. But I also live in the province and have a simple life. I teach English online, and do SEO consulting for work, I used to weigh over 400lbs, but now I eat a lot of fruit and veggies and not processed foods. My health has gotten much better and I am probably alive now because of this change.
Also, people seem to have this belief that if you live this way. women would not want us. But I have no issues in the dating scene. Which is another benefit because I am a lot more active. Where people assume with our lifestyle we have to stay in the house.
This man seems to be sincere & happy. Good for him & best wishes for a long happy life.
Thank you Mitch!!
He is very lucky to escape from American Corporate Dictatorship . He has simple ,but a happy life.

Yup. Lucky him
Great video. Glad he's found happiness. Can't imagine comparing living in his kid's garage vs the life he has now.
It is the perfect analogy for at lease a million seniors where I come from
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat Glad you've found a much better life. Maybe you'll inspire others. :)
I think this is a Masterclass in 'living on your own terms'.
The more I hear this guy talk the more I like him . Such a breath of fresh air hearing him talk not flash just honest.
I need to find out more info on living there, it's becoming more and more appealing
Good luck!
I saw his video previously and he’s done a nice job turning it into a great home.
Thank you my friend!!
So right! I the same I pushing 70 I totally understand also, I have ended up on my own also after a life serving women! Now I serve myself, I live now in Rizal Philippines as my pension from the UK is not enough in the UK!

Hey Martin. Thank you. Nice to see you my friend!!
Partnering with a financial advisor has transformed my approach to investing. Their expertise and personalized guidance have not only helped me navigate complex financial markets but also optimized my portfolio to achieve my long-term goals efficiently.
Market behavior can be complex and unpredictable. Mind if I ask you to recommend this person whom you have used their services?
Monica Shawn Marti is the licensed advisor I use. Just search the name. You’d find necessary details to work with to set up an appointment.
Thanks for the info. I searched for her full name and found her website right away. I reviewed her credentials and did my research before reaching out to her.

Totally. This guy and Paul redeem my faith in the PH.
Some of the other guys on TH-cam and Reddit who see nothing but problems and endless pitfalls are just draining. Lol
One day you'll wake up feeling at home and then you'll know
@@Ex-Pensive_Expatthanks for the great advise. I think you are the most at piece mentally in your entire life😂. Congratulations.
@@thomaslong8448 You're 100% correct Thomas!!
Thank You

First time I've seen him without the shades. He's got a great channel, great content.
The reason I wear shades in my videos is because I'm usually outside and also is because I am self conscious about the bags under my eyes. I could sleep for week and people will say. "You look tired". I never wear them indoors or when riding public transportation.
Darrell is so amazing! He has taught me so much from afar and I'm so impressed with everything he's done. So proud to call him a friend.

Why would anyone beat you up for that? The key is you are living your life the way you desire and doing so simply and comfortably.

Hi Paul guess what you are getting closer to 100k wow ! Where did the time goes .well congrats in advance!
Mind if I ask you to recommend this particular coach you using their service?
My CFA 'Grace Adams Cook' , a renowned figure in her line of work. I recommend researching her credentials further. She has many years of experience and is a valuable resource for anyone looking to navigate the financial market.
Thank you for the lead. I searched her up, and I have sent her an email. I hope she gets back to me soon.

Rents are high. But if you take out the big city rent prices, they are nowhere near on average $1700 a month in the US. You need to find a small town in the south or midwest and you can find average rents of about $800.
All rent aside. Having been here for 2 1/2 years I am so glad I am here.
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat Yes, I'm jealous! :)
Paul, congrats. This is another excellent interview.

Bring Mae! 🤣
Great to hear!
Thank you my friend!!
Big fan of both of you guys!! Great video!
