Charlie Hill is just so funny and his humor is so on point that I couldn't stop laughing. Plus I love how he uses his humor to make commentary. Even though he passed away, I hope there'll be more Native American comedians that'll be inspired by him.
We have a saying on my rez " if you could throw a rock over a hill it would be a maracle if it didn't hit a staats, Lickers or greene' which are all family names. This guy was a 4th cousin, or so I am told, but so is Graham greene, and our family always calls him crabby apple tree from dudley the dragon...he won't ever live that one down...lol
Just saw "Going Native" on Showtime and then I remembered seeing some Native Comedian on David Letterman waaaay back in high school and he was hilarious and totally radical and for about 5 minutes he completely cut loose and did a pared-down but rawer version of the above sketch and then they suddenly cut to commercial and when they came back he was gone and Dave looked scared...it was awesome. Glad I found this and glad to hear he's been busy.
When he was on letterman he sat down an was interviewed after his stand up routine letterman didn’t look scared he came up an shook his hand Charlie hill was on letterman multiple times
@JoelSamuel Thank you very much for this. Charlie Hill was amazing. I just typed that I'd been laughing at Charlie since the Richard Pryor TV show from back in the 1970s. I met him a few times and he was such a great guy in person. I'm Native too, but that had nothing to do with it my wife's white and Charlie and she got along better than he got along with me, lol! This man was hilarious and he improved as he aged. I liked his edgier stuff in his later days. Charlie worked with Rich Hall on Rich's Inventing the Indian documentary. Charlie was awesome, as was Dallas Goldtooth. Nonetheless, thank you very much, or as we say, wado. That's Tsalagi for thank you. 👍😎
Charlie Hill was one of my favorite comedians. I've been watching him since he was on the Richard Pryor TV show back in the 1970s. So, yeah, I'm old and yeah, I'm Native too. Charlie crossed over in 2013 at age 62 of nonHodgkins lymphoma. That sucks. He was a great guy, and really nice in person as well. Requiescat in pace, Charles Allan Hill.❤
I'm really glad i stumbled on this guy he's great. I agree that in 83 no they weren't ready for this but its got to come out. More power to you Charlie
The best part of this set is when Charlie gives non-Natives a heads up about government: "It's never been cowboys and Indians. That's kind of a myth. It's been government and Indians. Now it's government and White folks and Black folks and all living things. Really, we're really brothers and sisters, man!"
rest in peace homeboy... doing comedy in Tempe Az AT that time..wow... no color in the audience at all but they recieved him well...always was and always will be an inspiration to us natives till we meet again...
Fist time seeing this guy. He reminds me of my older full blooded brother, who vanished. I hope this video goes viral. I am surprised I never heard of him before. Thanks for uploading and sharing.
Rare comedy videos indeed- if you enjoy my old productions from my variety entainment show- tell your friends you saw it on joelsamuelpresents- welcome to my show!
i just discovered him he is so awesome. Wow he is so on point! That crowd was killing me only a few peoplle got it . i feel more people would appreciate him now
amazing stand up, would have gotten a lot more laughs in this time. I wouldn't have dreammm to make those kind of jokes back then, && i loved how actually made a decent amount of people laugh
'Bout time someone started giving us white folks a hard time. I don't care whewre yer frum, that shit's funny!!! "It never was cowboys and Indians... It was the government and Indians" My favorite quote in his skit... So true. Wish both sides could realize that and the hatred and racism stop. Best regards to all!
I'd have done the blues tune as "so you say Columbus, you wanna live right among us, we'll I've got some reservations, about how you'll treat the nations..."
I saw Charlie at Native festival at Rancocas, NJ in '87 and I thought his stuff was incendiary as it was funny: "You'll see! We'll get our land back, put you on reservations and then we'll be the ones going, "'boo-hoo-hoo-hoo.'" Way more than on tv at that time. Man! Dave not ready for it after 12:30!. I was supposed to see him at a Micosukee/Seminole festival 7 years earlier, but canceled because he had to see over his kid's birth. She was at Rancocas.. Wonder how she's doing?
Did you know that rain dances actually worked? The natives knew about the atoms in the atmosphere. If you use vibration, aka dancing, beating drums and singing. You're expelling your intentions into the energy around you. If you do it Right, you will see the desired effects. I'm part Cheyenne and Cherokee
Awesome..how did Cherokee and Cheyenne get together ? Seems like an uncommon thing considering they come from different areas that's a long distance from each other..unless from Oklahoma maybe. Anyways..👍
This video is pretty much the same kind of comedy as nowadays! Really no difference, besides the quality of video. You wouldn't even know it was the 80s! Until the camera points to the audience....then I see the decade lol.
And humor sense variations run in families. I'm mixed native tribes and UK cultures, I got the sarcasm from both cultures, was raised by white people as an adopted child, we didn't laugh at anything in common.
They don't see us as funny. that stems from the shame of their ancestors, and they carry that with them. I've learned something about are settler friends, while living surrounded by them. they carry their ancestors in the same way that we carry ours. they just don't talk about it. they choose to ignore it, and then act like they just don't understand why the world is they way it is. where we choose to embrace our ansestors, and we can see through to the truth of what being a human being is.
Wow I don't wanna sound like a douche but this guy is ahead of his time. (I just found this video if you hadn't figured that out ) Case in point the stuff he's saying about Reagan and "we're all in it together" seems to be reiterated 20 years later. Dave Chappelle and Carlos Mencia seem to be doin it too. This guys great, the end :)
I like how only the women clapped for the Ted Kennedy leaving a woman to drown joke 😅. The two time story was 😂 19:00 the dad story is too relatable. Why do they always have to control the TV even when they are alseep and snoring 😅
Love comedians even better seeing native indians stand up acts, I have an old Apache film with an half blood Indian in, what's funny is at he end of it all the Calvary man gets shot my his own side, funny strange
Crowds a little white huh?? In 83 people were not ready to hear this. This guy's awesome!! Go Charlie!
As young Native funny man. My family neglected to tell me about this guy. Damn, I feel great shame for not knowing.
You'd better get some content going on your channel! We'd love to see you!
