But he left a body of work that, thanks to the internet, can be enjoyed and increasingly understood by us folks even w/o the man, himself. I recently saw an old, original "Roseanne" where Charlie was D.J.'s teacher and got in some good licks about Thanksgiving, taught the Connors and, I understand, the show's crew as well, an American Indian dance. .
Guys I just want to say that he was an amazing guy. My mom and his daughter were so close to each other I almost felt as if he were my grandpa. I do miss him dearly everyday.
Only recently have I heard a European historian mention the story of the Iroquois Confederacy. And finally I understood where democracy really came from. All that time they taught us (in Belgium at least) that it came from the ancient Greeks, it made no sense. Why would the colonists suddenly pick up a political system from more than a thousand years ago?! It makes a lot more sense that they saw the democratic principles in action. We all owe Haudenosaunee deep respect and gratitude. And then I came across this clip... I wish I had know him a lot sooner.
Oh, white people LOVE stuff from antiquity, it's probably a combination of looking at a variety of options while trying to build a new system and then having seen democracy work in indigenous society. We're not solely a democracy, we're also a constitutional Republic, which is based on ancient Rome's system of government.
Democracy as practiced in europe does come from Greece, during the renaissance and enlightenment european thinkers began to delve back into the classics and the growth of the middle class, along with important wars like the 30 years war, and english civil war, caused people to become disillusioned with monarchy and state religion, that is the origin of the modern western, democratic, secular state. Nontheless, the Haudenosaunee confederacy was an impressive government form and something to admire
