An introduction to maces and war hammers

  • Since blunt impact weapons are usually not covered as much as swords I figured it would be good to make kind of a maces / war hammers 101 video. The topics are 1.) practical aspects (mainly handling / function), 2.) design (how they were made / some examples of historical finds), and brief history (when they became common).
Maces were already used in the Bronze Age and earlier while war hammers are a more distinctively medieval form of weapon, specifically designed for use against armor. They reached their peak in development in the 16th century.

i got a question based from the skyrim book mace etiquette. heres what the book says.
Warriors sometimes make the mistake of thinking that there are no tactics with a mace. They assume that the sword is all about skill and the mace is only about strength and stamina. As a veteran instructor of mace tactics, I can tell you they are wrong.
Wielding a mace properly is all about timing and momentum. Once the swing of the mace has begun, stopping it or slowing it down is difficult. The fighter is committed to not just the blow, but also the recoil. Begin your strike when the opponent is leaning forward, hopefully off balance. It is completely predictable that he will lean backward, so aim for a point behind his head. By the time the mace gets there, his head will be in it's [sic] path.
The mace should be held at the ready, shoulder high. The windup should not extend past the shoulders by more than a hand's width. When swinging, lead with the elbow. As the elbow passes the height of your collarbone, extend the forearm like a whip. The extra momentum will drive the mace faster and harder, causing far more damage.
At the moment of impact, let the wrist loosen. The mace will bounce and hurt a stiff wrist. Allow the recoil of the blow to drive the mace back into the ready position, thereby preparing the warrior for a quicker second strike.
my question is how much of this is true?

So, I watched your video with the two "professional" swordsmen discussing dual wielding, and then followed it up with your review of the windlass mace, and now this vid ... and it got me wondering about your take on dual wielding maces?

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  8 ปีที่แล้ว +61

In short: Terrible idea. Maces are neither agile nor particularly good at parrying, so it would be cumbersome and offer very little defensive capability, while not having any advantage over mace and shield or buckler.

    • @declanpm8578
      @declanpm8578 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Maces are quite reliant on how you swing the weight. Bit like a larger weapon, if you swing the weight properly it would still be able to do damage to an opponent but dual wielding a mace... its just not practical at all. A shield/mace would be much better. Much like dual wielding swords using one to block the opponents weapon while using the other to strike would be the strategy used. But due to a longer swing time the opponent would likely be able to block it with their shield or sidestep out of the way.

    • @Bananenbauer123
      @Bananenbauer123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Axes have more cutting power whereas hammers are exceptionally good at blowing up armor.
Usually platearmor was alot more expensive to produce so almost exclusively wealthy knights actually weared the really good armor sets. Until this point when countries joined war many peasants and other people that have no business in fighting were forced to protect their land.
Over time however people realized that swarming an enemy with large numbers is not the only thing contributing to the outcome of a battle. Armor became available for a larger number of people because kingdoms started financing their very personal army. At this time armor piercing weapons started shining such as hammers and clubs, however this time didnt last very ling because when armor piercing crossbows and last but not least gunpowder weapons joined the table, armor became very dispensable.
      I hope I could help.

One of the most impressive display of maces I've seen was at a local ren fair, where a fairly local group of HEMA practicioners had one of their mace specialists at their stall. He displayed a hunk of steel, allegedly on the heavier end of maces. I seem to recall it was above 2kg, but I have a hard time believing myself there. I'm not entirely sure how much bias may have blown my awe up in retrospection. It certainly seemed a little shorter and pudgier than the one you had on display. I tried finding it to see if I could back it up with a reference, but I apparently suck at googling. In any case, I couldn't hold it for extended periods, let alone imagine swinging it.
The mad lad not just swung it, he could stop it on point.
He demonstrated with his colleague, repeatedly swinging his mace at, then stopping mere centimetres away from his unhelmeted friend, who somehow stood completely still. My retrospection keeps trying to insert the smell of pooped pants into the memory, but I'm faily certain they just knew and trusted his skill. Still, big fucking balls on that bloke. They talked a bit about the "not stopping" thing, and how the exercise there wasn't really healthy for extended periods because of the wear on the joints and such. In that case, I wonder how the dude got the practice without fucking himself up.

This kind of flanged mace was an officers' weapon in 17th century Poland - it was used the same way the Japananese used fans - to make the officer's gestures more visible to his underlings (for higher officers, these became less practical and more scepter-like.
Somewhere around that time the warhammer also evolved one specialised form - a long handled one with the spike removed (curved into a spiral) that could be used as a walking stick - those developed a bad reputation, and there are some historical writings speaking against them, because they could do a lot of damage without drawing much blood - so a bad temped person could easily underestimate how much harm they were causing.

Hey Skall, for your point about finding a lot of copper mace heads (at 6:32), that could be a preservation bias as copper preserves better than steel. To my knowledge, steel can rust and become lost with unfavourable conditions whereas copper just turns blueish green as it oxidizes ("rusts").

Forge welding is a little different then you described. First the temperature is much higher than orange heat (~1700F, ~900C). Typically when you forge weld, it ranges in the white to bright white color (~2200F, ~1200C) and it should look similar to butter. Then once you start forging you are essentially hammering the atoms into a different configuration. If done right, you end up with a single piece of metal which has been bonded at the molecular level. Besides that great video man!
(Sorry for the criticism, but blacksmithing is really interesting stuff. And before you ask, I have forge welded and its really cool. It definitely worth trying.)

I do not remember exactly where I saw it, but I saw a mace with a heavier pommel to counter balance the mace head to give it a bit more agility, now I will be the first to admit, that I may be wrong on this, but as it has been several years since I saw it. But, such an addition would also add to the overall weight of the weapon.

The flanged mace actually made an appearance in WWI as well, typically as an improvised weapon using something like a heavy machine gear as a head and a broom handle as a shaft: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/36/Trenchmaul.jpg

What if we combine a sword, a war hamer, a spear and a mace???
    Like:
    -150 centimeters length
-the head is like a war hammer
-the base under your grip as a mace head
-a double edged blade is imbued into the shaft above your grip range all the way to the head, were it connects

It would be insanely heavy. There's a reason why it wasn't done. Combination weapons often become poor at everything when they get too ambitious.

    Got a couple things.
#1 They also did cast flange maces out of iron. They are almost impossible to find because they broke but they were made.
#2 There is also, but rather new, Cap held flanges for maces. Not sure how strong it is but basically its slots cut into a head and flanges are slid down it and are set into a lower cap and a upper cap is placed. They could be braised but otherwise you can change up broken or bent flanges or even change then out for different styles like a bladed version kinda like axe blade styles and only have two for an axe like effect. I am wanting to make one of them for testing.
#3 Have you ever tested a Kanabo. It was a Japanese studded war club. There is a make your own Kanabo video somewhere on TH-cam that looked promising to try and make.
#4 The war hammer is relatively newish but at the same time hammers used in battles is not as they have a simple stick that is split and a round rock placed in between or a hole is carved and the stick inserted and then wrapped. They are hammer and were used as such and even some dedicated to battle. Which begs the question of what is the fine line between a hammer and a mace. Is it simply that a mace is multi sided and a hammer is one too two sided? If so then there is the earliest forms of stone axes that are more or less hammers. They beat the fibers of the wood until they broke.

    Dear Skallagrim,
Imagine you would go into the post apocalyptic wastelands or try to find a treasure in a
forest full of orcs and monsters or whatever similar situation and you could
bring ONLY ONE CLUB-LIKE WEAPON. What would this club exactly look like? How
long or short? Two handed, one handed, one and a half hands? Top heavy or more
equally balanced like a stick. What material? Symmetrical or not? Shaped like a
medieval mace, simple steel pipe, trench club, gunstock war club, baseball bat,
hammer, flail etc? Does it have spikes, studs or just smooth surface? How
heavy? What does the handle look like. Do you buy it or build it? How indestructible
    is it, and so on.
I am really courious what specific tool you would bring in this case because you might
encounter so many different types of situations and you can have only one tool
that you need to be able to rely on all the time during your long adventure.
Therefore I ask you to make a video about what your perfect universal club-like weapon
    would exactely look like.
I hope this is an interesting request for you!
    Thank you :-)

A family I know has a war hammer in there home (although there's actually a large collection of them ill explain why down below) its super old and its way bigger than what would be normal the thing is the design is kept the same always but it's completely re made every few generations (varying) because the smithing advances over time and each hammer has the name of the one it was built for engraved, so there's alot of them each an improvement on the last but exactly the same design.
    It's reallly cool.

Quite a lot of the historical finds you show here are ceremonial maces. That certainly doesn't make them somehow less valid or interesting, but they may differ from functional weapons in ways beyond just the ornamentation. That 18th century Indian mace reminded me of a lot of European 'artifacts' from the same era that are really just historical fantasy pieces old enough to have become historical themselves.

  • @MegaSweeney123

I'm far from an expert on these matters, but from observations and looking for the simplest uses, etc. I figure Morning Stars were kind of like a Pollaxe is to a War hammer. The longer, two handed, psuedo-polearm variation. Except on horseback, then you just hold it out at your side as you ride on past.
They just look too long for one handed striking haha
Or, it could simply just be the name for the head. We have flanged maces, which are, well, all flanged, and morning stars which are the ball with spikes.

Regarding the Mexican mace, to my understanding the early 16th century fighting style of the Mexica (including the Aztecs) was ritualistic and designed to capture opponents for slavery and sacrifice. It was much different from the Spanish/European method of warfare in which wholesale slaughter was the primary goal. That may explain why the mace would seem less functional (although it would not have needed to overcome metal armor).

well in general i think it was just easier to thrust given how the romans fought with large shield pretty much shoulder to shoulder as cuts would get in the other soldiers way given the motions involved but as a battle progressed and became more of a skirmish this would open up all facets of the blade and not just the thrust

There was a book in Skyrim describing a maceman defending a stairwell against a hundred men.
He killed 99 men by timing his strikes to land on the shield and helmets of the men, so as to strike fast. The 100th man instead stepped back as he swung. The maceman missed, and while he raised his mace back up, he was slain.

This would be the plain-vanilla school of maces ofc. In Late Antiquity/Early Medieval times the Byzantine and Sassanid Persian heavy cavalry used rather more formidable designs - as well they might, given how much time they spent hammering each other and the amount of armour both wore. The former apparently favoured a massive all-iron job while the latter preferred a distinctive flattened head atop a long wooden shaft not wholly unlike a sword in general appearance. Arabs from the same period probably took the cake, though. They had this crazy design that basically amounted to a nearly meter-long hexagonal or octagonal iron bar with a sword handle; very heavy and expensive (period sources reckon one took about as much metal as six swords) and duly rare, only used by mounted elite warriors and exceptionally strong ones at that. The effect could be commensurately spectacular; one chronicle apparently describes a missed swing at enemy cavalryman hitting his saddle pommel instead - and knocking both man and saddle right off the horse. (I should really dig through my bookshelf for the proper names for these things, but :effort:)
