    Thank You So Much for your extreme time with this lens, you hit all the great points for use and sharpness!!! Started with the Voigtlander 12mm in 2015 and fans and lights twist above. Also the 1018 f/4 APS-C (1527) but 1218 on a FF that at the time perfect. Then the 1224 f/4 superb 2017. The main use is Astro MW shots due to wideness and more Way in the image. But a point, I went to Antelope Canyon in 2017 the widest one had was a 16mm but the norm I saw was a 35 or 50 on DSLRs, I put camera on the ground and pointed up (hid behind some rocks) got ground side to side in focus to the top with clouds (bracketing), point is you get more with more options. 12mm is a panoramic capture in 3:2 ratio very fast no effort. A 2.8 great at night but on a Sony f/4 will be as good because of ISO invariance (low noise) with best sensor Dynamic Range shadow detail recovery anyway. You can carry the 14, 20 and 24 or just this one your choice. A 1224 is a great travel lens along with the 24240 or the 2470/70200 f/2.8. You pointed out for landscape you will be at 2 stops above widest for sharpest anyway. What I like with either f/4 or f/2.8 at 12mm is the sharpness of the lens at far distance in the day (2 stops up) BUT at night the inverse (no one talks about) at f/2.8/f/4 sharp and focused closest and anything (comm towers and lights) far away. And a pano in portrait view only needs one level of shots for a late MW arch that's over your head and without distortion of buildings/cars/objects close and stitching can be done today in Ps/Lr but more options still in PTGui. 24 is wide but if you know about foreground subject with a good wide background subject this range lens is a must have in the bag, but it takes practice and time. The ClearNight filter is great for cityscape night capture colors and sharpness at 300% to 600% , your jaw will drop, people in rooms far away sharp @ 2.8. With 2.8 you can control highlights using lower ISO but remember SS will be faster for no star trailing than at f/4. For info the widest is the Voigtlander 10mm f/5.6 chipped and have used for MW small great lens best at like splinking or horse shoe canyon where doing a pano you or gear may go over the edge.

    To add one more note : I used to shoot a Sigma 8-16 on my Nikon d7000 and d810 for live music photography. Many of my most liked photos back then were shot on that lens . Some of also my personal most liked came from the 8-16 apsc lens . Which in Nikon terms is 12-24 . I miss the creativity afforded for a Len like this . With the phenomenal af of the lens and Sony bodies it’s a win win .

    Great video Dustin. I have both the 12-24 GM and the 14mm GM, and got lucky with an almost perfectly centered copy of the zoom at all focal lengths (lots of people have received decentered copies). Your comparison was interesting, my 14mm GM is razor sharp wide open on my A7Riv, but corners suffer due to fairly pronounced field curvature, so I'll always use this lens by corner focusing to get a better average for focus. My prime is also a bit decentered, with top corners worse than bottom corners. Corners were similar between my 12-24 GM and 14mm GM at f2.8 if corner focused, but the Sigma 14-24 DG DN beat both (corners specifically). We're lucky to have so many excellent wide angles right now.

      @@NetvoTV both have decentred copies unfortunately, it's fairly common with wide angles. I've got another 14mm GM now and it's very good, although I've recently got the Sigma 14mm f1.4 DG DN and that beats the lot for astro.

    This is a lens I really would love to have for my live music photography and videography.
    Just shot a band with the Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 and a ton at 15 and loved it. Except for the super super poor autofocus of that lens . I shot with live view on the back of my Nikon d850 . I get a better hit rate that way than it’s dismal phase detect performance on concert lighting.

    You definitive rewiews are amazing as always. Where are you sitting outside? This looks different than from your garden spot i other videos. Seems like a very nice place. For some reason it seems like you used a very different setup for this video than normal, there is strong moire on your shirt and high base level noise on your microphone. But I know you have been trying out different setups. Nothing can beat your 135mm gm backyard setup even though the camera must be further away then which might not be too comfortable at points.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The moire is due to picking a wrong shirt, mostly. I'm using a wireless microphone system these days and am still working on getting the best sound quality out it. The convenience is fabulous, though.

    Some of this is off-topic, but it’s just to add some background.
    I considered selling my copy of this for an all-prime kit with the new 14mm GM (with 35mm GM, 135mm GM and a future cheaper supertele prime (I would describe myself as a prime user), but after seeing how they compare (also from other reviews), I’m not sure if I’m going for the above or for 2 zooms and 1 prime instead; 12-24mm GM, 50mm GM (would prefer 40-45mm GM) and 100-400mm GM for everything from architecture, street, landscapes, family (also using a X100V here) and some car photography and wildlife (mostly bigger birds).
    Fun fact is that many got bad copies of the 12-24mm GM at first as well (mine is great), so maybe it’s the same phenomenon here with the 14mm. Hopefully this won’t continue.
    No ideal kit can be made with just a couple of lenses for everything, but I think the latter gets close for my use. But it’s hard for me to give up on so many great primes. At the same point, it can be bothersome when not being able to fill the gaps and having to change so often.
    If I was just in to architecture and landscapes, I would just get another zoom (24-105mm or 24/28-70mm), but I sometimes want a standard lens for street and people and generally a bit extra blur. If I was just in to weddings, I would go 20mm, 35mm and 85mm. The list goes on. When doing a bit of everything, nothing ever fits properly together, hence why I change my kit often.
    I got some Voigtländer lenses as well currently, which I love to use for nature, but I want to make my kit more simple with just a few lenses that can cover everything, so I’m probably selling them. If I was a pure landscape photographer, I would probably never let go of them, but I just live in the middle of a capital and rarely get deep in nature or travel. I mostly do architecture and street, then landscapes and a bit of product photography (mostly cars), wildlife and people.
    But then again, I’m just a hobbyist when it comes to photography, and I’m just a student that doesn’t even study photography (at least not my choice as of now). For this, it becomes even more expensive extremely fast. Even if I had the budget, I wouldn’t want choose between 10 lenses, and I’m sure some gearheads like us, easily could find use for multiple systems and hundreds of lenses, but it can also be frustrating when always having to think about what to use and bring for every situation.
    Anyway, a phenomenal review as always, Dustin! Just as some people are excited to read a new, fresh newspaper, I’m always excited for your reviews. Your findings are usually corresponding with my results.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your last statement means a lot to me, as I certainly want my findings to be consistent with what other users experience in their use. That gives my reviews real world practicality.

    • @carbon6372
      @carbon6372 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only criteria I can point out, is that I use a sensor of higher resolution (the 60,2 megapixels of the a7R IV), but in general, an excellent lens on the a1, will also turn out to be excellent on the a7R IV. Well, it’s not really any critique, but I usually take reviews that use sensors of lesser resolution than I for granted (I want to compare them directly on the same density), as you can’t just compare lenses directly on different densities. But it’s mostly when people use something of 30 megapixels or less that I can’t get much use of. Sure, a given lens won’t necessarily look worse on higher resolution, but nor will it necessarily be able to take advantage of it. I would say it’s mostly fine with the resolution of the a7R II, III and above, as excellent lenses on here, usually are excellent on the a7R IV as well, but then there are the outstanding ones that take a bit more advantage of the resolution.

    Thank you Dustin, as always a great and usefull review... Before watching, i was thinking to add the new 35mm and 14mm.... Or perhaps this 12-14mm insteadt of my Tamron 17-28mm and the 14mm GM... But when you compare the 14mm with this zoom, and the zoom is obviously the better... Or is it different at infinity? When you compare the zoom with the new Samyang 24mm.... The new GM lenses just isn't so very impressive anymore? Obviously 24mm is not 12, or 14mm.... But what to think?? :) :)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Samyang is just an exceptionally sharp lens, period. I'm kind of torn between the zoom and the 14mm prime, too. On an instinctive level I enjoyed the prime more, but that has a lot to do with the compact size and because I have other lenses to cover other focal lengths.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI I love that Sony could only squeeze 9 blades inside the 12-24mm. This cave the most beautiful sunburst in my opinion. And am sure it doesn't effekt the bokeh when shooting wide open. And bokeh isn't really a thing to consider when stopping down. The 16-35mm GM was never something i considered because of this, The Tamron 17-28 was a much better and cheaper alternative. Though i would love to see a 16-35mm with 9 blade in the future. I think i would go with this 12-24mm however. It seems to check all the boxes, exept for price and size... It's the tradeoff.... Thank you again Dustin, for your always great reviews

Because this review show it, you can watch it at the 10:42 part, is it real and should I turn off the correction then?: m.th-cam.com/video/4FbYfkMDreU/w-d-xo.html
    Also, is the 12-24mm still a good buy or Sony will update it soon because the same 6 years old 16-35 GM got updated few months ago?
    I find it hard to understand people recommend faster lens but when they actually use it they stop down, then what's the benefit there at all, is not like you get a F2.8 lens will provide more light when you use it at F4 isn't it? And what if I want the scene to be fully in focus at night time, fast lens won't help but it's the sensor low light capability that going to provide my artistic vision at F8 with the good rendered quality of image isn't it?

      My copy of the lens was a loaner, so I don't recall seeing this and can't go back and test for it. I would say that it will be a long time before a replacement of the 12-24 comes. It's a newer lens and probably the best of its kind, whereas the 16-35mm was much older and due a replacement.

  • @AR-vf7vg

    How deny that the (probably) single question regarding Sonys 12-24mm is how it stands up against the Sigma's view weeks only earlier DG DN 14-24mm, image-rendering wise (technically), and then: "12 (and 13mm) is more than "nice to have", worth "more" in cost, size and weight (pragmatic practicality) ?

    • @carbon6372
      @carbon6372 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although the 14mm GM is cheaper, has a wider maximum aperture, lighter and more compact, the 12-24mm GM seems to be a bit better optically (at least from most of the reviews that I have read or watched). My theory is that the early copies of the 14mm are heavily impacted by copy variance. The same was true with the 12-24mm, but more seem to get better copies now compared to the first few months. The 12-24mm is, sort of, more bang for the buck overall, as you get more focal lengths with the same performance (all outstanding on the a7R IV), which makes sense for landscapes and architecture. So if needing different focal lengths in the wider spectrum, one would either need multiple primes or this zoom. In that sense, the zoom won’t be more expensive or heavier. But in the opposite sense, the prime is superior in almost every way. I currently got the zoom, but I’m not sure, if I’m sticking with it. It’s more a fact of how my whole kit is going to fit together, which I find challenging when wanting 3-4 lenses for everything you photograph (nearly every aspect).
      Thought of
      1) 14 GM, 35 GM, 135 GM,
      (future light supertele)
      2) 12-24 GM, 50 GM, 100-400 GM
      I like being a prime guy, but I’m not sure if the gaps and changing lenses often will frustrate me more than slower apertures at both extremes and living with just 50mm for anything where I want to blur the background some. Keep in mind that architecture, street and landscapes are first for me then everything else. For kits as mine, the zoom makes more sense.

      hi John, if all you need is 14mm (or thereabouts), I completely agree. What the 12-24mm provides is a very competent lens at almost all the primary wide angle focal lengths, which has its own value.
