  • The Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 G Master is a new, large aperture, pro grade, ultra-wide angle zoom lens. This is the latest pro-grade zoom lens in Sony's lineup. The lens features a minimum focusing distance of 11 inches, and weighs in at 1lb 14oz.
    Check out the Wine Country Camera 150mm Filter System - you can use discount code AOP on checkout for 15% off!
    The impressive component in this lens is the XA front element. This is a very specific design that allows for a smaller and lighter lens, while maintaining superior optical quality across the entire zoom range. Sony have developed a new coating specifically for this element, Nano II - which eliminates almost all ghosting and flare issues. The lens also features 4 XA linear motors for impressively accurate and silent autofocus.
    The lens is impressive for shooting architecture and landscapes. But its also amazing for low light and even environmental portraits. This is a truly versatile lens that expands Sony's professional zoom lineup. Its no longer just the Holy Trinity.
    This is one of the best ultra wide angle lenses I have used to date.

    That's why I love Sony. They're just your classic working class hero. Everyone laughed at them when they entered the photography business and still there are people who look at them as an "electronics" company and yet they just bring out incredible quality bodies and lenses that revolutionized the business in just a few years.

    This is a specialty lens that few people have the budget for. I'd mount the 10-18 f/4 aps-c lens on a FF body if I really need that 12mm FOV.

    I've been excited about this lens for a while and look forward to the comparison video, but would urge you to consider comparing it with the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 DG DN Art - that's the lens that, for me, is more of a genuine competitor than, say, the either the Sony 16-35mm or the Sony f4 12-24mm.

    Hi Ted. Thanks for the amazing information, I can relate to the transitions you had to make in the world of photography as cameras and technologies evolved. I have a question and would love to see an applied answer. With Sony's pixel monster a7r iv, would going to crop mode give us an additional virtual lens without loosing any quality (eg. 85mm f1.4 -> 127.5mm f1.4)? Thus making the high GM's value worth it.

    First I wanted to thank you for your expertise review of the FE 1224 GM lens! From this review I have decided to purchase this lens! It should arrive on July 2nd 2022. I will let you know what I think about this lens on my Sony A7R4A body. I started shooting with a wide angle lens Takumar 17mm f4 fish-eye which is a full frame view 35mm on my Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic F body back in the early 1970s. I'm sure I will be blown-away with the FE 1224 GM lens! Thank you again for your wonderful review!

    I honestly never thought Sony would make a 12-24mm f2.8 since no one has ever done it. It’s clear they have been working on this one for several years. I think it’s a more remarkable lens than even Nikon’s 58mm f.095. Having a sharp f2.8 from 12 to 24mm is amazing. I have the 12-24mm f4 and the NISI filter setup and it works very well. Like any tool take the time to learn how to use it before jumping in the car and heading out hoping it will all work out when you get there

    Thanks for info on Wine Country filters!! Suggested 1. For filters use Sony Playmemories app Digital Filter on Mark ii and below bodies, has preselections for sky a learning curve but 2 presets also for recall, allows for SS/ISO/WB/F/# for all sections and an adjustment of section in after shot review before camera processing RAW (uncompressed)/RAW jpeg/jpeg (if someone could just ask Sony to put apps on the Mark iii and above frames) 2. Put a Lenscoat on the lens, For Astro people you are out at night and early season Feb. Mar. and Apr. in the cold will help keep the lens warmer. For protection and extra weatherproofing, ever do a MW at 2 deg. F in snow need I say more!! Lenscoat currently does not make one for the f/2.8 or f/4 but will if enough ask!! The f/4 is good also but for something small and less expensive the E 1018 (APS-C) 12mm to 18mm (18 if the lightshield removed) in Full Frame IS/AF/f/4 uses screw on filters and really small. APS-C 15-27mm great walkaround lens range and lets you get your feet wet at the widest of angles. I used for years before the f/4 for Astro MW way better than Rokinon 14mm f/2.8.

    I rented the 12-24mm G about a year ago for a trip to southern Utah/northern Arizona. I Loved it. Very interested in your more in depth comparison. Been saving up for it the G version and have just about enough $ for it, but now Sony comes out with a G Master. Don’t know if I can justify the extra $ since I mainly shoot at f8 to f11 for landscapes and class photos. But will be watching to see if I have to put off my purchase for another year or give up eating for a couple of months.

    thank you for this review! I was thinking to get the 14mm 1,8 gm, because of the handy size, but now I am actually thinking if I should get this 12-24 mm - because it seems that good that it can cover prime lenses at 18 and 24mm, so that I wouldn't have to get those as well. - the size though - I always go with primes and haven't had a zoom before. But - I do think that it seems like a good buy to get this one because it seems to be so good that I wouldn't need the primes. What do you think? - also - I am actually shooting on an A7r ii camera, that I am so happy about I don't want to upgrade it. But not sure if this lens will then be overkill.

    Hi Ted,
    I have been watching super wide lenses for a while and I never found anything I could get excited about; until Sony came out with the 12-24mm f/2.8 GM.
    I have a Holdfast MoneyMaker, and an a7III, and I will soon be buying an a7Riii, so I can duel wield. I have the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8, and the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM. The 85mm and 35mm combination is very common and traditional; however, lately, several photographers I follow on TH-cam are using a 50mm and a 24mm.
    Here is my plan. I could use the 12-24mm f/2.8 GM at 24mm for my wide lens, and I would have the 12mm if I needed to do a group shot or to do something creatively. Also, I consider myself a Headshot photographer so I like to get a good headshot of everyone even if I am shooting an event. So, I need a lens like a 85mm. If I use my Zeiss Batis 85mm it will be good for Headshots, but not much else. Also, I would be using 2 different maximum apertures. I think I would rather use the Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro G Lens. It is only 5mm longer than the 85mm and I doubt that my customers would notice the difference in Bokeh. Also, the Macro would be greatt for getting details at an event.
    What I am scared of is scratching the front element on the 12-24mm f/2.8 GM when it is swinging around on my Holdfast MoneyMaker!
    Talk to you later,
    Mathew

  • @mastrorj68
    @mastrorj68 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's a good question. So do you buy the 16-35 g Master, the 24 mm 1.4 g Master or this lens? I've owned the 16 to 35 g master. I don't know if the auto focusing motors are older or newer in that particular lens but it did shoot for some reason and gather more data at a higher bit rate than what's typically in Sony cameras and Sony lenses I believe it was also one stop more of HDR. I've never owned the 24 1.4 But I've heard some really great things. And now there's this lens. Great aperture, 4 mm difference But from comparisons I've seen the quality in the 16 to 35 is better. And it's at a better price point too. I sold mine to buy a 24 to 70 g master because I would have gotten more use out of it 24 is pretty wide I've shot a lot of landscapes at 24 and the zoom to 70 made sense for my walk around and event photography. 16 to 35 just wasn't enough reach for me but the images it produced were outstanding I mean you really got your money's worth from that 16 to 35. I think I would honestly buy the 16 to 35 again and the 24 g Master instead of buying this lens for $3,000 I'd rather spend a little bit more money to get those two versus this one. Just curious what your thoughts were

    • @johnvuong6926
      @johnvuong6926 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the 24 GM and it is an absolute beast. If you are not a professional photographer and shoot non-moving objects, I think you can get away with stitching multiple shots together to get a wider angle. I have a 17-28mm tamron to fill-in as a wide-zoom, (which I don't happen to use much unfortunately). That basically stopped me from considering the 16-35 GM. The 12-24 GM is too expensive for my taste as a hobby photographer. I would rather consider the Sigma 14-24, but then again I am not sure if I want to spend more for the 3mm extention.

      You mean the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8? Different focal length, but looking at Fro's review, the sharpness is exactly the same between both lenses, but the Sony has a few advantages: less vignetting, better light transmission, better AF, and of course 2mm extra. Sigma's main advantage is the price, but also weighs 50g less.

    Good review. I purchased mine Tuesday and am excited to see how much of an improvement it is compared to the f4 G version. I know it can ghost quite badly but the f4 G is still a remarkable lens. Originally, having a 12mm focal length as a backup was great, but it quickly became a favorite focal length after just a few months after purchasing it. Although I don’t usually shoot such a wide lens wide open, having an f/2.8 really gives you some interesting options. I’m going broke with these GM lenses. Sony has really changed the world of photography in just a few years.
