So I decided to stop at the florescent color step for a few reasons. 1) Right now the florescent colors are beyond expensive. 2) I wasn't confident I could do the florescence good enough and I didn't want to ruin all my hard work and 3) I decided I liked the non-florescent look better anyways. I've one more NPC, the Hill Troll, and then it's on to the fellowship minis. After that, I have to two small expansions to do. I also have War of the Ring coming (the Ares board game) and I've Hexploreit Volume 3 to paint as well. I'm really happy with the results so far. Thank you Sorastro!!!!!

@@Sorastro I think I noticed something and would like your thoughts. The wight that was magenta changed to orange really captured my eye. I don't have a lot of experience with those specific florescent paints, but, think you gave me what my son calls a "brainspark." (Pretty sure its from a show he watches.) Perhaps if they were layered according to proximity, the way the highlights were, it would increase the illusion. In the example of the orange one (even though possibly unintentional) you have red furthest from the source, then orange as it gets closer, finally white-orange closest. I think that would also work with the green one; yellow to yellow green to green. I have some florescent paints coming soon and can't wait to try some of these out. Thanks as always for the inspiration.
Hey Rob - I think varying the tone of the fluorescent tones would work nicely! I guess it would make sense to start with a light glaze of the yellow - focusing around the skull area, then apply the blue or green, pushing more to the outlying areas, and overlapping with the yellow to create a transition..? :)

As always a brilliant painting tutorial, with a fantastic eye for detail. I believe you misspoke when you were detailing the sword. As bronze would not rust, but would tarnish and/or corrode. I'm not sure what part of the sword you were suggesting was rusting, and therefore made of iron? Please and thank you for any clarification in advance.
Thanks Mike! You are of course correct about bronze not rusting. have you seen the new Citadel Contrast Paints? If so what do you think? Too me they look interesting but from what i have seen it is recommended that you use the new contrast undercoat/primer. In the back of my mind i am a little worried that they are just trying to sell more primer by making a thicker wash adding extra flow aid.
Hi John! I've had a quick look at them. I'd be interested in trying them out over different coloured base tones to see what variations of hue are possible, or perhaps trying throwing some Shades on top, because used on their own they don't produce any variety of tone (just value). Still, could be useful tool in the armoury when speed painting large numbers perhaps... :)
@@Sorastro plus the make a white and contrast medium which I am most interested in being that they dont make a white wash and the medium for creating your own color and blending.
Encore des peintures magnifiques. Pouvez vous me dire quel est votre taux de dilution pour la peinture ? Vous n'utilisez jamais de palette humide ? Merci
Thank you! I do often use a wet palette, but chose to keep things simple for this series as it's aimed more for beginner painters. Regarding the dilution, I can't give precise ratios but just try to say in the video whether the paint is quite opaque (like for the bones) or more translucent (like for the robes). It's something you just have to practice a bit and get a feel for. :)
Hey Sorastro, may I ask what brush you are using for applying the shades? Atm I'm following your LOTR-tutorials and right now I'm also painting the Wights. ;-) I'm using a size 2 but I think its too small, yours looks way bigger. Is a bigger brush better for shades?
I really appreciate your work, it's simply amazing :) I've learnt a lot from your LOTR series. But I would like to say, for future reference, that bronze usually doesn't corrode as rust - because it's copper alloy without iron :) So, the verdigris should be sufficient for their swords.
Ah well, I tend to prize aesthetics over realism, but if it helps, you could call the orange bits "corrosion" instead of "rust" if you like, as you can see in this example: www.google.com/search?q=bronze+sword&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwil-cStopHiAhUK2-AKHX1-CRcQ2-cCegQIABAC&oq=bronze+sword&gs_l=mobile-gws-wiz-img.3..0l5.35105.40092..40847...2.0..0.244.1171.9j2j1......0....1.......5..35i39j0i67.ZBn4leRf9Xs&ei=apfVXKWcMIq2gwf9_KW4AQ&bih=718&biw=412&client=ms-android-samsung&prmd=ivn&safe=strict&hl=en-GB#imgrc=fdD6ekQASl-I9M 😀
Great work. When I do zenithal highlight I find that in order for it to have any effect I have to have the paint so much thinned that the black/white is showing through a lot. Feels easier to just basecoat with AB and make a highlight with a lighter base coat from above. What should I change?
Thank you! I imagine your best approach might depend on what you're painting; applying a base colour and highlights with an airbrush sure makes sense for a large creature that is mostly one colour perhaps, and I bet you could produce some really easy and effective OSL with the airbrush too! I find going with the zenithal highlights and thin base colours is a nice way to batch paint large numbers to an OK table-top standard however - it just takes a bit of experimentation to get a consistency you're happy with. And of course - as you've noticed - the tones won't be as vibrant as when applying opaque base colours because some of the black and white will (and should) show through - therein lies the trade off between speed and quality, but I do find the Citadel Shades go some way to offsetting that desaturated look however... :)
Amazing video as always. So inspirational. Thank you for such a quality production. One question, sometimes you thin the paints with water, sometimes with Lahmian Medium. What's the difference between the two? When would using water be better than Lahmian Medium and vice versa?
Thanks a lot Carl! I generally just use Lahmian Medium when thinning the Shades so as to maintain their viscosity and how they behave. You can thin your paints with it too if you like though :)
When you zenithal do you do the white as a dry brush because of the issues in getting a smooth coat with a rattle can or is it to give yourself more control? Do you prefer the rattle can or airbrush?
Hi John! I usually provide the zenithal highlights with an airbrush because the results are smoother than when using a rattle can (although rattle cans are OK if you don't have an airbrush). I then provided a final white dry brush just to give a little extra definition to the raised details. :)
Agreed. Although the minis look great I won’t be buying into this game but will use the techniques and colour schemes on my GW Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game miniatures. Great work Sorastro. Thanks.
What is the difference between "Flow Enhancer" and a thinning medium like Lahmian Medium ? I've seen you using them in this series and I'm not familiar with flow enhancer.
Excellent eye-glowing effect, Sorastro! Love the use of fluos, and especially how the orange increases everything on that wight. Do you think a little fluorescent yellow (on top of red and orange) could also have been used?
Ive been watching all your JiME painting video's, and was wondering if you had plans to paint the rest of the expansion character pack (Villains of Eriador Atarin, and Coalfang) and the rest of the expansion Shadowed Paths bad and good guys (can see you've done Gandalf and Balrog) also new character pack coming out soon Dwellers in Darkness - thanks in advance on your reply :) ps understand you've many models and games to paint, but love what you did with the JiME paint style :)
Hi Paul! Yes I will certainly be covering the remaining figures from the Shadowed Paths (plus expansions). Please note that I've covered some of the earlier minis as PDF guides which you grab for free on my website: sorastro.com/2020/03/23/atarin-pdf-painting-guide/ :)
Hi John! I generally thin my paints with water, but like to use Lahmian Medium for thinning the Citadel Shades, as using water kind of messes with how they behave. :)
You mention that there is nothing in the lore to suggest the glow, but when the hobbits were captured by the wight in the barrow downs there was mention of a greenish glow within the barrow. As there was no mention of a source of the glow and as the only unnatural thing within the barrow was the wight it stands to reason that the wight could very well have been the source of the green glow. 💀
Absolutely love your videos Sorastro! Will the audio tracks for the Lord of the Rings series be available to download anywhere? Are they available to your Patreons?
Hi David! If you're using Citadel then I'd recommend using the glazes (Guilliman Blue, Waywatcher Green etc); I'd suggest thinning them - ideally with Lahmian Medium - and then applying them in the same way; just brush over a thin layer and let it dry, then add an additional layer or two to your liking :)
They're perhaps not quite as "luminous" as the Vallejo fluorescent paints but they are still pretty good! They're what I used for the OSL effects in my earlier Star Wars Legion videos (Darth Vader and Luke) :)
Sorastro's Painting I wanted to add luminosity before you did it so I am super happy about this (this LOTR set is my first I am painting.. ever so I am basically following your guide). And I want this to shine so I think I’ll try to get those Vallejos. Thanks a lot for these videos- when can we expect the rest please?.. main heroes? :)
Hi Scott! It's possible but really not advisable, as the paint won't adhere so well to the mini. It's a pain, but it really is with priming them first. 😀
Hey man! Hmm, did you perhaps buy the gloss version of the Shades? Either way don't worry; you can just apply some matte varnish on top to kill the shine (I use the AK Interactive Ultra Matte Varnish myself). 🙂
@@Sorastro Thanks for the Tipp! I just finished the finishing touches step, before applying the OSL. Applied a bit more drybrush (brown+buff) which also killed some gloss effect. Next step: OSL. Can’t wait to try it. Will link you in my Instagram-post! ;)
I’m not one to tell Sorastro what to do, but for me it would have been easier to do the chest cavity and between the ribs in black and then do the bones. Just my newbie two cents.
I like your work, however Verdigris on a sword?? Verdigris is oxidisation of either copper or brass, neither of which would be used as a blade of a weapon, and if they were, they wouldn't rust. Apart from that, great work.
Thanks! You're concerned about the realism of the sword on a reanimated skeleton with a glowing skull? I love it! Regarding the sword, I actually said bronze, and you can call it "corrosion" instead of rust if that bothers you less - so something like this example: www.google.com/search?q=bronze+sword&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwil-cStopHiAhUK2-AKHX1-CRcQ2-cCegQIABAC&oq=bronze+sword&gs_l=mobile-gws-wiz-img.3..0l5.35105.40092..40847...2.0..0.244.1171.9j2j1......0....1.......5..35i39j0i67.ZBn4leRf9Xs&ei=apfVXKWcMIq2gwf9_KW4AQ&bih=718&biw=412&client=ms-android-samsung&prmd=ivn&safe=strict&hl=en-GB#imgrc=fdD6ekQASl-I9M 😀
Sad that u dont use any citadel paints anymore. Considering to cancel my subscription, dont want to buy vallejo paints cause i have all citadel, or using the chart which doesnt allways match the colours. But good video as always!
Hi Philipp! Thanks for the feedback. I do actually still use Citadel colours, but just not for this series as I wanted to make it as beginner-friendly as possible, and I make no apology for that. I am curious to know which chart you're referring to? And I'm glad you liked the video anyway. :)
Hi! I personally really like the Wight sculpts, but as with most things there will be some who like them and others who don't. When you say they don't look like they're from LOTR I'm assuming you're referring to how they're described in the book (since they don't actually appear in the movies)?
So I decided to stop at the florescent color step for a few reasons. 1) Right now the florescent colors are beyond expensive. 2) I wasn't confident I could do the florescence good enough and I didn't want to ruin all my hard work and 3) I decided I liked the non-florescent look better anyways.
4:08 in and Sorastro's shit is looking tabletop ready already lol.
Lol buddy :D
You're very talented!
Everything just looks horrible when I try to paint them 🥲
Hey Sorastro, may I ask what brush you are using for applying the shades? Atm I'm following your LOTR-tutorials and right now I'm also painting the Wights. ;-) I'm using a size 2 but I think its too small, yours looks way bigger. Is a bigger brush better for shades?
Hey Sacha! I think what was probably the Redgrass Games brush which is still actually a size 2, but feels somewhat bigger than my Rosemary & Co.. 😀
Hey dude, great video. I used to watch you when you were doing the original star wars imperial assault series. Love your work man, keep it up 🌟👍🏻
Hey man! Thank you so much - I remember your handle from comments you left me ages ago! I'm glad you're enjoying the new LOTR stuff 😀
@@Sorastro for the next subscriber milestone, could you do a video showing all your equipment?
Absolutely! When I hit 100k I'll happily do a full studio/equipment tour 😀
I really appreciate your work, it's simply amazing :) I've learnt a lot from your LOTR series. But I would like to say, for future reference, that bronze usually doesn't corrode as rust - because it's copper alloy without iron :) So, the verdigris should be sufficient for their swords.
Thanks a lot! Yep, I'm also aware that skeletons don't usually walk around with glowing skulls 😀
I agree ☺ But more realistic details may make them more believable 😁
Okay, that's fair enough 😁 Can't wait for another episode 😊
Thank you! I'm currently playing with different skin tone ideas for the Troll; so many options! 😀
ao amazing
Thank you! :D
These look amazing. Love to see how you would paint the minis from the new Hellboy board game.
Thanks a lot! I'd love to try painting some Hellboy at some point; I've got too much on at the moment, but one day... :)
the glowing effects :O
Yeh.. I can never resist an opportunity to play with some glowing effects :)
That glow effect looks AMAZING!! I'm gonna have to go back and incorporate that into my Hobbit Trolls campfire and anyone I have holding a torch
Thanks a lot Adam! It's a pretty simple approach to OSL but I think works more than well enough for table-top standard stuff like this :)
Sometimes the simplest is the best
Absolutely! :D
I love how I don’t have to own the game to learn new techniques from these
Thanks David! I'm really happy to hear that :)
Agreed. Although the minis look great I won’t be buying into this game but will use the techniques and colour schemes on my GW Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game miniatures. Great work Sorastro. Thanks.
I don't have any fluorescent paints, could I just thin down a regular paint to get a similar effect ?
Hi Charles! Sure - just use the brightest, most vibrant colour you have. The Citadel Glazes are actually pretty good for this sort of thing too :)
Great episode! Will you be painting the heroes soon? I've been holding back on painting mine! 😁
Thank you! I’ll be painting the Hill Troll next, followed by the heroes 😀
Love it
Thank you José! 😀
What is the difference between "Flow Enhancer" and a thinning medium like Lahmian Medium ? I've seen you using them in this series and I'm not familiar with flow enhancer.
Hi Ryan! The flow enhancer alters the surface tension of the paint which just makes the paint flow more easily and with less "thickness" :)
How much time do you wait for paint to dry when layering each lighter color of dry brush over the last one?
Hi Blake! I don't wait long at all - just more or less go straight from one tone to the next :)
Excellent eye-glowing effect, Sorastro! Love the use of fluos, and especially how the orange increases everything on that wight. Do you think a little fluorescent yellow (on top of red and orange) could also have been used?
Thanks! Sure, you could try adding some yellow on top, but I'm not sure how much it would show over the darker colours. 😀
@@Sorastro ahh wicked, ill be on the look out for any JiME video's in the future. also thanks for the point to your free pdf guides...top man :)
You're welcome! 😁
When do you thin with a medium, like lahmian or matt, vs water?
Ha ha - I guess you're right, although I think Tolkien might have had something a bit more subtle in mind compared to what I did with mine! :)
@@Sorastro Pfft! Tolkien should have maximized contrast, I say!
Ha ha 😄
Absolutely love your videos Sorastro! Will the audio tracks for the Lord of the Rings series be available to download anywhere? Are they available to your Patreons?
Thanks a lot Jordan! The LOTR music will be available on a future album - hopefully coming to you later this year... :)
Hello sorasto, could you recommend equivalent GW fluorescent colors? Or close to Vallejo’s?
Sorastro's Painting I assume the glow effect from those glazes wouldn’t be as strong from those from Vallejo?
They're perhaps not quite as "luminous" as the Vallejo fluorescent paints but they are still pretty good! They're what I used for the OSL effects in my earlier Star Wars Legion videos (Darth Vader and Luke) :)
Sorastro's Painting I wanted to add luminosity before you did it so I am super happy about this (this LOTR set is my first I am painting.. ever so I am basically following your guide). And I want this to shine so I think I’ll try to get those Vallejos. Thanks a lot for these videos- when can we expect the rest please?.. main heroes? :)
No problem David! I'm going to work on the Hill Troll next, and will move onto the heroes next month... :)
Can anyone advise if it is possible/advisable to paint these minis without priming first?
Hi Scott! It's possible but really not advisable, as the paint won't adhere so well to the mini. It's a pain, but it really is with priming them first. 😀
I love the blue so much. ... it's going to be hard not to do all three that way. :)
Thanks! You absolutely could do all three blue! I just felt I ought to try a few variations out just to show how they look :)
@@Sorastro absolutely, that's why I love your stuff.
For some reason my miniature was very glossy this time after applying the shade... Any idea why? Too much shade?
Will link you in my Instagram-post! ;)
Awesome! 😀
I’m not one to tell Sorastro what to do, but for me it would have been easier to do the chest cavity and between the ribs in black and then do the bones.
Just my newbie two cents.
very very nice!!!
Thanks a lot! 😃
@@Sorastro i will try your glowing technic ;)
Go for it! 😁
Aw man. I'm a patron but think I was missed :(
Hi Sam - I've just checked and you are credited on the 5th line up from the bottom. Thanks for your kind support! 😀
Thank you so much! I watched about 4 times and missed it every time. My fault. Thank you again for your help and for your content! Fantastic work
No problem! Be aware that I usually add new patrons to the bottom, so as patrons come and go you'll gradually move up the list :)
Mantic released a great Hellboy themed Boardgame with beautifull minis. Any chance you could do those?
Hi Domen! I'd like to paint Hellboy, but I just have far too much on my plate at the moment, so I won't be tackling it any time soon... sorry! :)
finishing touches are the best part. Tells you that you can stop before getting to them. fuuuuuuuuuuuu
Ha ha - I know now everyone likes to go to town on the minis, so I'm glad you like the little "stopping points" :)
I enjoy your videos and I am thankful but this game suck and the minis are awful
Thanks! My daughter and I are really enjoying the game (currently on the 7th adventure), but each to their own I guess :)
@@Sorastro How old is your daughter? My son is 11 and I want to try him on this. We are currently doing Imperial Assault on the app.
@@jamieb0tc Hi Jamie! She's 11 too actually 😀
The minis are generic crap that don t even look like from the lord of the ring ... an I the only one to not be blind ?
Hi! I personally really like the Wight sculpts, but as with most things there will be some who like them and others who don't. When you say they don't look like they're from LOTR I'm assuming you're referring to how they're described in the book (since they don't actually appear in the movies)?
You're very talented!
Everything just looks horrible when I try to paint them 🥲
Thank you! I'm sure your minis look better than when they had no colour on.. 😀
